Iran’s Police Seize 220 Kilograms of Illicit Drugs

Head of Khorasan Razavi Province’s Law Enforcement forces, Qader Karimi, says 220 kilograms of opium embedded in a trailer heading to Turkmenistan have been seized by the Law Enforcement forces in the city of Mashhad.

The law enforcement forces received reports on Wednesday on the smuggling of a large amount of drugs embedded on a trailer heading from Kerman to Turkmenistan. “The trailer was spotted on the entry to Mashhad and confiscated immediately,” he added.

“In a search operation, the forces managed to discover 220 kilograms of opium embedded in the trailer,” he said, according to a Farsi report by ISCA News.

According to Karimi, at least one smuggler has been arrested during the operation.

Since the beginning of this Iranian calendar year, beginning on March 20th, over 8 tonnes of drugs have been discovered by the law enforcement forces in Khorasan Razavi province.

We’ll Celebrate ISIS Destruction in 2 Months: General Soleimani

Ghasem-Soleimani

Major General Qassem Soleimani, the Commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corp (IRGC), says the ISIS terror group will be annihilated in a matter of months.

“I … already said we will root out ISIS in three months’ time, and I’m telling you now that the annihilation of ISIS is close at hand and we will celebrate the destruction of this evil tree in two months, and it is Iran, Russia, Syria, and Iraq that should hold that celebration,” said the top general, according to a Farsi report by Fars News Agency.

He then said the reason why enemies do not dare attack Iran is that the country had a successful experience in countering the enemy during the eight-year Iraqi imposed war on Iran in the 1980s and is also successful in fighting militants in Iraq and Syria today.

“The enemies tried to create the impression that this is a Shiite-Sunni war, but today there is more kindness between Shiites and Sunnis than ever before,” the top general said.

He then referred to those who have come to Syria to defend holy shrines against enemies.

“Today, all those who have come from Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan to defend holy shrines have come voluntarily.”

He said the driving force behind young Iranians going to Syria and Iraq is conscience as well as humanity.

“When insightful, faithful and revolutionary Iranian youth see that the oppressed people in cities in Syria and Iraq are besieged by ruthless people, they make sacrifices.”

General Soleimani underlined that in some cases “diplomacy won’t work,” adding there is no way to deal with terrorists in the region but to fight them.

Iran Unveils ‘Khorramshahr’ Ballistic Missile with 2000km Range

The missile, named Khorramshahr, was put on display during the military parade in Tehran on Friday, with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and senior military officials in attendance.

The ballistic missile, which has a range of 2000 kilometers, is capable of carrying multiple warheads, said Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, a senior commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Division.

“As it was observed, the missile has become smaller in size and more tactical and it will be operational in the near future,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the parades.

Addressing the event, Rouhani said no country can stop the Islamic Republic from strengthening its missile capabilities and defense programs.

“We will promote our defensive and military power as much as we deem necessary,” Rouhani said. “We seek no one’s permission to defend our land.”

He added that Iran’s defense power has never been used for aggressive acts, while certain world powers export deadly weapons to the Middle East.

The Iranian president said Tehran is playing key role in restoring peace and stability to the region.

“The great nation of Iran has always pursued peace and security in the region and the world, and has always defended the oppressed people of the world. We will defend the downtrodden people of Yemen, Syria, and Palestine whether you like it or not,” he added.

The parades across the country feature military units from various divisions of the Armed Forces, including the Army, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) as well as the Police Force. The week-long events are held in commemoration of Iranian forces’ eight-year defense of the Islamic Republic in the face of Iraq’s 1980-88 imposed war against the country.

Rouhani further slammed Washington and Tel Aviv’s recent anti-Tehran statements before the UN General Assembly.

He said the US and Israel have isolated themselves by expressing opposition to the nuclear agreement, which is hailed by the entire world community as a win for international diplomacy.

Rouhani once again reiterated Iran’s full commitment to the landmark 2015 nuclear accord with six world powers, called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

He said the entire global community commended the deal, “except only two people,” referring to US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who used their UN speeches to attack the JCPOA.

“I am very glad that this year at the United Nations and among all the countries of the world, there were only two voices, which were opposed to that of the people of the world. The US and the regime occupying of al-Quds were the only two voices, which were different from the voice of the entire world.” Rouhani asserted.

‘Breath’ Great Choice to Represent Iran’s Cinema in World: Official

Ahmad Masjed-Jamei, a member of Tehran City Council and a former minister of culture, has hailed the selection of ‘Breath’ as Iran’s official submission to the Academy Awards.

According to a Farsi report by Khabar Online, he said looking at the issue of peace could be seen not only in ‘Breath’, but also in Abyar’s previous film ‘The Groove 143’.

“In addition to expressing the director’s peace-seeking viewpoint, one of the characteristics of ‘Breath’ is the special attention of the filmmaker to the lifestyle of an Iranian family at a certain point in the contemporary history of this land,” Masjed-Jamei added.

He went on to say that the Iranian culture is full of diversities.

“One of the most appreciated values of this culture is the self-defence, and the other, is the value of ethnic, human and cultural diversification. Many people think that accepting one of these two values is the rejection of the other; but the film ‘Breath’ by Abyar has managed to put together these two values in a frame beautifully.”

Therefore, he added, the film can be a good cultural representative of Iran at the Oscars.

Masjed-Jamei, who is a member of the Cultural and Social Commission of Tehran City Council, said ‘Breath’ depicts different aspects of the Iranian life at different ages in urban and rural areas.

“The audience of the film faces a large amount of information about people’s lives during the years of revolution and war. One of the positive points about the movie is its special attention to ethics in the Iranian family, and Abyar has rightly chosen the topic of self-defence during the imposed war.”

The former culture minister highlighted that ‘Breath’ screens the turmoil that war creates in people’s collective and family life.

“In addition, one of the reasons for the success of this film is the sensational narration of the director, which seems to be a kind of narrative of her childhood, especially when we see the film is narrated from the viewpoint of a child girl,” he underscored.

“Most directors act selectively in narrating their stories, but in this film there is no selective look, and it describes all the story in full detail.”

Stressing that the film can beautifully represent Iranian cinema at the international events, Masjed-Jamei concluded that one of the reasons for choosing ‘Breath’ to participate in international competitions is its true account of Iranian life.

“Breath”, produced in 2015, relates the story of a little Iranian girl named Bahar who lives a life spun from folklore and stories, always with her head in a book. But growing up in Yazd in the 1970s and ’80s, she is at the centre of a country in turmoil: the Shah is overthrown, Ayatollah Khomeini rises to power, and the first shots are fired in a bitter and protracted war with Iraq. Over the span of several years, Bahar finds daydreaming in her own fantasy world is the only way she can make sense of the pain and suffering warring humans inflict on one another.

Isfahan Selected as Member of Creative Cities Network

The UNESCO Creative Cities Network was created in 2004 to promote cooperation with and among cities that have identified creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development.

The 116 cities which currently make up this network work together towards a common objective: placing creativity and cultural industries at the heart of their development plans at the local level and cooperating actively at the international level.

The Iranian city of Isfahan has been recently selected as an official member of the network thanks to its precious crafts and arts.

US Elites Embarrassed by Trump’s UNGA Speech: Iran Leader

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei

Speaking in a meeting with the chairman and members of the Assembly of Experts on Thursday, September 21, the Leader blasted the nonsensical and absolutely awkward speech made by the American president in his address to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.

“These words were not triggered by a sense of power, but by anger, helplessness, and imbecility; because, the US government has become increasingly angry and dissatisfied that plots, they initiated several years ago, in Western Asia were neutralized due to the effective presence of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Ayatollah Khamenei said, according to his English website.

“The speech presented by the US president did not make Americans proud. The educated American elite must feel embarrassed for having such a president; as they have previously expressed feelings of shame,” the Leader added.

“That foolish, extremely ugly and hideous speech by the US president, with its gangster and cowboy language fraught with sheer lies, stems from their fury, frustration and light-headedness,” the Leader said.

Regarding the anger of the American officials, Ayatollah Khamenei said, “The US government had developed a plot for Western Asia many years ago. They called this plan the ‘New Middle East’ or ‘Greater Middle East’.”

“Three pillars of this plot were Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon; however, the US was defeated in all three of these countries,” the Leader noted.

“The presence and influence of the Islamic Republic of Iran caused the plots and intentions of the US and the Zionist regime [of Israel] to fail in the region, and that is the reason for their anger,” the Leader added.

During his speech at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, Trump accused Iran of engaging in “destabilizing activities” in the region. He claimed that Iran’s “support for terror is in stark contrast to the recent commitments of many of its neighbors to fight terrorism and halt its financing.”

Iran, Iraq, Turkey Warn Kurdistan against Holding Referendum

Following a trilateral meeting between Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu, and Iraqi FM Ibrahim al-Jaafari in New York, the three sides reaffirmed their strong commitment to the territorial integrity and political unity of Iraq.

They expressed their concern that the planned referendum by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), which is scheduled for September 25, 2017, puts Iraq’s hard-earned gains against ISIS under great risk.

They further expressed their concern that the planned KRG referendum is unconstitutional and runs the risk of provoking new conflicts in the region, that will prove difficult to contain.

In their statement, the three sides:

Registered their unequivocal opposition to the referendum; decided to urge the leadership of the KRG to refrain from holding the referendum; emphasized that the referendum will not be beneficial for Kurds and the KRG; agreed, in this regard, to consider taking counter-measures in coordination; and recognised that constructive dialogue within the Iraqi constitution is the only way forward to address the issues between Baghdad and Erbil.

They also stressed the importance of support of Turkey and Iran to resolve and contain this escalation, reiterated the need for concerted international efforts to convince the KRG on calling off the referendum, and renewed their call on the international community to remain engaged on the issue.

The top diplomats further welcomed the recent liberation of the Nineveh Governorate, which constituted a major victory against ISIS, and acknowledged the perseverance, commitment and resolve of the people of Iraq as a whole in fighting ISIS.

They also stressed the importance of keeping the focus on liberating the remaining areas that are still under ISIS control, and underscored the importance of post-ISIS stabilization efforts to achieve lasting security and stability in Iraq.

FMs of Iran, P5+1 Hold Talks on Nuclear Deal in New York

We raised the issue of Washington’s non-compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) during the Wednesday meeting, said Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

All the representatives present at the meeting stressed “the necessity for the signatories to respect the JCPOA,” the Iranian foreign minister stated, adding that it was the second Joint Commission meeting of the JCPOA at the ministerial level on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Zarif went on to say that the meeting was held to show “consensus among the P5+1 group of countries” on remaining committed to the 2015 nuclear agreement signed between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries.

Referring to the US president’s speech at the UN General Assembly, the Iranian foreign minister said Trump’s anti-Iran rhetoric proves that “the US is detached from the realities of the international community.”

Trump told the General Assembly on Tuesday that the nuclear agreement is an “embarrassment” for Washington, accusing Tehran of violating the deal.

‘Good opportunity to meet’ Zarif

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, for his part, said he had a “matter of fact” exchange with his Iranian counterpart, but he said that Washington still has “significant issues” with the nuclear deal.

“It was a good opportunity to meet, shake hands. The tone was very matter of fact. There was no yelling, we didn’t throw shoes at one another,” Tillerson said.

“It was not an angry tone at all. It was a very, very matter of fact exchange about how we see this agreement very differently.”

EU: No need to renegotiate the JCPOA

European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini confirmed Zarif’s remarks, stressing that the nuclear agreement was “delivering” despite calls by Washington to renegotiate it.

“There is no need to renegotiate parts of the agreement, because the agreement is concerning a nuclear program and as such is delivering,”  Mogherini told reporters at the United Nations on Wednesday.

“We all agreed that all sides are fulfilling their commitments,” she said, adding that the EU would exert all efforts to make sure the JCPOA stays in place.

The other signatories to the agreement — the UK, Russia, Germany, China and France — have reiterated their commitment to the deal on multiple occasions.

Trump reaches ‘decision’ over deal

Ahead of the meeting, Trump told reporters that he had reached a “decision” over the deal without further elaborating.

“I have decided. I’ll let you know what the decision is,” he said.

Since Trump took office, the US has repeatedly threatened to abandon the agreement.

Macron trying to change Trump’s view

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron has said that he has still not given up on trying to change Trump’s view of the deal.

“Is this agreement enough? No. It is not, given the evolution of the regional situation and increasing pressure that Iran is exerting on the region, and given… increased activity by Iran on the ballistic level since the accord,” he said in apparent contrast to his Tuesday’s remarks where he defended the JCPOA in his first UN speech.

Iran has repeatedly insisted that its military capabilities are solely aimed for defense purposes and they pose no threat to other countries. The country has also been assisting its allies, including Iraq and Syria, in their ongoing fight against terrorism.

“This is a good agreement, an agreement that’s essential to peace,” the French president said.

All newspapers today covered the remarks made by President Hassan Rouhani in his address to the UN General Assembly.

They particularly hailed his response to the anti-Iran comments earlier made by US President Donald Trump. The comments by IRGC Commander Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari about Iran’s future response to Trump’s remarks also received great coverage.

Another top story was the remarks made by French President Emmanuel Macron about the possibility of adding articles to the nuclear deal between Iran and world powers. Macron says the nuclear deal can be extended to the time after its expiry date.
