“Police Ensuring Tehran’s Security, No Need for IRGC’s Help”

Ali-Asghar Nasserbakht, the deputy governor of Tehran for political and security affairs, told ILNA that the police has the city under its full control, and has not at all asked for the help of the Sarallah Base of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).

He further noted that the clashes between police forces and rioters have decreased compared with the early days, and the number of people taking part in the gatherings has also dropped.

He went on to say that the Law Enforcement is still trying to ensure order and security in the city through toleration and guidance, adding that the forces in recent days have been asking the offenders of law to leave the streets and stop their illegal actions.

However, he added, in cases where public properties were damaged or ordinary people and their properties were attacked, the police forces arrested the perpetrators.

Unfortunately in certain places, the demonstrators harassed citizens, took them out of taxis or buses, and in one case set fire on a taxi in downtown Tehran, he added.

Nasserbakht noted that 450 people have been arrested since the beginning of unrest in Tehran. “Almost 200 people on Saturday, 150 on Sunday, and 100 on Monday were detained.”

The arrests have been made after the individuals insisted on taking their illegal measures, he noted.

His remarks came after IRGC Spokesman Brigadier General Ramazan Sharif said the Sarallah Base is responsible for ensuring the security of Tehran, but there has been no need for its intervention yet.

Several Iranian cities have been the scene of anti-government street protests in recent days. The early protests demanded a better economic situation and better living conditions, but sporadic violence has erupted during the protests, causing a number of casualties.

Saudi Arabia, US, UK behind Recent Riots in Iran: Shamkhani

Speaking to Lebanon’s Al Mayadeen on Monday, noted that the US, Britain and Saudi Arabia are behind the recent riots in Iran, stressing that the hashtags and social media campaigns cornering the situation in Iran are all in fact being guided by these countries.

“Based on our analyses, around 27 percent of the new hashtags against Iran are generated by the Saudi government,” he added, according to Press TV.

Shamkhani added that this foreign-backed intervention is aimed at hampering Iran’s progress in different spheres.

“What is happening in Iran will be over in a few days, and there is no reason to worry at all,” he noted.

Since Thursday, groups of Iranian protesters have staged demonstrations in several cities to voice their anger over rising prices and economic conditions. However, sporadic violence has erupted during the protests, causing a number of casualties.

Iranian People Ready to Help Feed Hungry Americans: Envoy

Hamid Baeidinejad on Monday strongly blasted Trump’s multiple tweets over the past few days in support of the violence which has followed scattered protests against economic woes in some Iranian cities.

Trump had tweeted earlier in the day that Iranian people “are hungry for food & for freedom. Along with human rights, the wealth of Iran is being looted. TIME FOR CHANGE!”

Hours later, Baeidinejad said that after insulting Iranians by calling them “terrorists,” the US President has now described them as “hungry.”

Baeidinejad cited latest figures released by the nonprofit organization Feeding America, based on which 42 million people face hunger in the US.

“Very bad to remind him that 1 out of 8, meaning 42 million people, including 13 million children and 5 million seniors, are hungry in the US today,” he tweeted, according to Press TV.

Baeidinejad urged Trump to stop insulting another nation and rather ask the Iranian nation to help his country feed the starving people living the US, because “the Iranian nation, despite its own problems, won’t turn down his request for help.”

The Iranian diplomat also cited official figures showing that nearly half of power customers in Puerto Rico still lack electricity more than three months after Hurricane Maria.

“Mr. Trump should be encouraged to work harder to solve the American people’s problems rather than focusing on problems of other nations,” he tweeted.

Iran Arrests Several Agent Provocateurs behind Riots

Intelligence

In a statement on Monday, the ministry said Iranian security forces helped by people had managed to detain some of the elements who incited unrest in several cities across the country.

It added that efforts were ongoing to arrest other agents as soon as possible.

According to the ministry’s statement, some of the peaceful gatherings held in recent days in order to express public demands had turned violent “due to the presence of suspicious and aggressive elements” who damaged public property and caused casualties.

Since Thursday, groups of Iranian protesters have staged protests in several cities to voice their anger over rising prices and economic conditions. Sporadic violence has erupted during the protests, causing a number of deaths.

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani said on Monday the Iranian people would deal with a “small and minority group” of rioters and lawbreakers exploiting the protests.

He emphasized that the enemies of Iran could not tolerate the country’s achievements in the diplomatic arena, particularly in the confrontation with the US and the Israeli regime, and some of them had explicitly threatened that they would take regional problems into Tehran.

Tourists to Participate in Rally between Iran’s Mashhad, Iraq’s Karbala

Rally-Mashhad-Karbala1

Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHTO) has announced that the tourist rally will be held on a route from the northeastern holy Iranian city of Mashhad to the holy Iraqi city of Karbala.

This is the first such tourist rally to be held between Iran and Iraq after the victory of Iran’s Islamic Revolution, said head of ICHTO Ali-Asghar Mounesan as quoted by the Persian-language Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).

He said the Mashhad-Karbala route plays a key role in the tourist industry as well as in trade and economic transactions between Tehran and Baghdad.

“This route handles so much traffic, and every year large numbers of people from both countries come to visit the [holy shrines of] the infallible Imams [in the two cities],” he said.

Among the objectives of the competition, according to the official, are to evaluate and improve the strength and capabilities of the drivers as well as their navigation skills during the rally and to teach proper driving through the implementation of all traffic regulations.

The rally is scheduled to start from Mashhad on February 23, 2018, and end in Karbala on February 26, he said.

The official noted that 50 vehicles are to take part in the event. The participants will have to drive along a route which is 2,000 kilometres long.

Death Toll from Iran Protests Rises to 12: State TV

Iran Protests

The IRIB (state TV) declared on Monday that 10 people have lost their lives during the Sunday night clashes across Iran, raising the death toll to 12 since the beginning of protests on Thursday.

The state TV did not provide further details about the victims. However, Mashallah Nemati, the governor of Doroud in Western province of Lorestan, had earlier confirmed that four people have lost their lives and six wounded during the recent protests in this city, according to official accounts.

“During the first day of protests (Saturday), two people were killed and six wounded,” he noted, according to the governor’s official website.

He stressed that there is no accurate account of the people killed or wounded during the second day yet, but two citizens were killed in a car crash caused by the rioters on Sunday.

A firefighting vehicle deployed to contain a fire in a bank was seized by rioters, and while put on neutral gear, it crash with another car in which a man and a young boy were killed, he was quoted as saying by ISNA.

Hedayatollah Khademi, the representative of the city of Izeh in the Iranian Parliament, also told the Etemad Online news website that two people have been killed during the clashes on Sunday night.

He quoted the governor of Izeh, a city in southwestern Iran, as saying that the police forces had not been supposed to shoot people.

Therefore, we don’t think they have been killed by the Law Enforcement, he added.

Also in an interview with ILNA, he said this city has long been faced with the problem of ordinary people’s possession of guns and cold weapons, and this has caused troubles every now and then.

The protests, which started in the religious cities of Mashhad and Qom on Thursday, mainly focused on economic grievances, particularly the surge in prices and the financial corruption of the state bodies.

However, the ensuing protest rallies in other cities on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday involved more political slogans. Officials and analysts believe foreign and anti-Iran media and officials are trying to make the demonstrations political and provoke people to chant anti-Establishment slogans.

Iran President Calls for Enhanced Relations with Cuba

Iran-Cuba

In a Sunday message to Cuban President Raúl Castro Ruz, Rouhani offered his sincere congratulations to his counterpart and the country’s revolutionary people on the 59th anniversary of Cuban Revolution.

He also expressed the hope that the two countries, through joint efforts, would witness growing relations in all fields to serve the mutual interests of both sides.

Rouhani also wished health and success for Castro, and prosperity and felicity for the people of Cuba.

The Cuban Revolution was an armed revolt conducted by Fidel Castro’s 26th of July Movement and its allies against the authoritarian government of Cuban President Fulgencio Batista.

The revolution began in July 1953, and continued sporadically until the rebels finally ousted Batista on 1 January 1959, replacing his government with a revolutionary socialist state.

Iran President Congratulates Christians on New Year

In his congratulatory message on Sunday, Rouhani wished days full of happy moments for all Christian Iranians.

“Without a doubt, the teachings of Jesus Christ (PBUH) are replete with attention to spirituality, peace and friendship. His Holiness’ lifestyle and advice must always be our guide,” he added.

“Today, we are in need of the teachings of divine religions more than ever.”

He also noted that “we are proud of Iran which is home to all Iranians, be they Muslim, Christian, Jewish or Zoroastrian, and consider respecting all divine religions as the valuable teaching of the merciful Islam.”

“Wishing a year full of blessings and happiness for our fellow Christian Iranians, I ask the Almighty to give everyone growing success and pride.”
