Exhibition of Afghan Artworks Underway in Tehran

War has been the order of the day in Afghanistan for more than a decade now. The nation is no stranger to the operations of US troops as well as the growing activities of the Taliban terrorist group, and everybody is coping one way or another. Amid all this, Afghan artists may have been able to depict the situation in their country through their works of art. But which one of us knows about Afghan artists, the ones who have left their homeland and each is living in a corner of the world?

Now, someone who has lost her heart to the Afghan art has rolled up her sleeves to bring together Afghan visual artists, and remind them that being together can be a motivation for the youth who might think their lives have come to an end.

Maryam Koohestani was born in the southeastern Iranian city of Zahedan in 1982. Her family live in Baluchestan. She holds a Master’s degree in Art Research. She has been teaching in university since 2010 and specializes in sculpturing. She is the same person who has gone into action and organized an exhibition showcasing works by Afghan artists. The exhibit called “Nimrooz” is now open to public at Niavaran Art Gallery in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

I Miss Afghanistan!

It all started in 2015 when I made a completely personal trip to Mazar-i-Sharif (Afghanistan’s second largest city). During that visit, I had the opportunity to communicate with and meet Afghan people. When I returned, I missed that region. I went back there, this time to Herat. During my second trip, I met Afghan people. As I am a sculptor myself, I felt that I could do something for the Afghan society in that field of art.

The idea was that I wanted to bring works of art together and organize and exhibit to put them on show. As there was no chance in Afghanistan to hold and exhibition where artworks could be seen and reviewed, and there were few people who would be interested to visit the exhibit, I thought I could hold the event in Tehran, so that Iranians, too, would be able to see how good Afghan artists are.

I Wanted Afghan Children of Labour to See Works of Afghan Artists

I am an expert in sculpturing and I work with children of labour in Iran. There are many Afghan children among them. They are very frustrated and lonely. It was important for me to make them see the talent of the artists of their country and feel proud. I wanted them to understand that they are not that lonely, and that some of their fellow countrymen have achieved success. I wanted them to know that they can, if they want, weather the hardships of immigration and cope with the loneliness of living in another country.

Afghan Artists Have Spread Worldwide

In order to involve more people in the exhibition, I was looking for different artists. Accordingly, I managed to identify and contact over 200 Afghan artists across the globe. I could get in touch with, some sooner and some later, but I finally made friends with all of them and I hope this friendship will last. It took eight months to identify and contact the artists. Afterwards, I began planning and organizing the exhibition. Today, 140 works by 53 Afghan artists are on display at the exhibit. The works of art are in the fields of painting, calligraphy, photography, sculpturing, etc.

Art Can Push Back Frontiers

I heard different viewpoints about the exhibition from different people, from immigrant children to the other visitors who had come to the exhibition. Their words were very promising. Children of labour and the ones attending “literacy classes” (where they learn to read and write) also visited the exhibition and were re-energized by the event. They even said they would like to be an artist and put their works on show at such an exhibition one day. I, too, wanted to see their motivation, and I was happy to have been able to encourage them.

The workshops we held on the sidelines of the exhibition were marked by a very good relationship between Iranian and Afghan artists and led to several taboos being broken. Everyone was speaking of their problems, and they managed to communicate with each other. Art is so powerful and can do things that statesmen cannot. After the exhibition and its workshops were held, I believed that we could push back the frontiers with the help of art.

Kaveh Kavoosi, one of the organizers of the Painting Workshop, says the event was warmly welcomed by the participants.

“The workshop was running from morning till night, making it possible for artists to talk together about their works, to discuss culture and, in fact, they had good interaction with one another. The works of art present at the workshop are to be put up for sale on the closing day in favour of the Afghan children of labour who are in Iran (The proceeds will go to them),” he said.

The main aim of the workshops was to set the stage for cultural exchanges to take place, exchanges between two nations which were once not separated from each other, and now, regardless of political issues, have come together under the umbrella of art, which mainly focuses on peace and security.

1,100 Chinese Officials Punished for Damaging Environment

Chinese environmental authorities on Friday announced 1,140 officials of eight provincial-level regions have been punished, following investigations by central inspectors in 2016.

The move shows the country is seriously strengthening its law-enforcement muscle as it manages the environment, Chinese experts said.

Those punished include 130 department-level officials. Four of the cases were transferred to the judiciary, after central authorities conducted month-long on-site environmental inspections in eight regions from July to August 2016, the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) said Thursday in a statement on its website.

Inspectors found and transferred 100 cases related to environmental damage to local governments, demanding further investigation, Liu Changgen, deputy director of the national environmental inspection office was quoted as saying by the Xinhua News Agency on Thursday.

Forty-six local Party committee members and 299 local government officials were held accountable for environmental damage, according to the MPE statement.

The ministry’s inspectors looked into a broad range of potentially damaging activities to water, forests and tourist sites, according to the MPE statement.

“This shows the country’s unprecedented determination to protect the environment,” Wang Gengchen, a research fellow at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Atmospheric Physics Institute, told the Global Times on Thursday.

This is not empty talk and demands that environmental regulators at all levels along with government officials and business owners be mindful of environment protection, he said.

“It sends a strong signal that if you allow environmental damage to occur, you will be punished, even if you have retired or been transferred to other departments or regions,” Wang added. Green pursuit The MEP statement came after Chinese President Xi Jinping on November 11 said that China will speed up ecological conservation, pursue green, low-carbon and sustainable development, and implement the strictest possible system for environmental protection.   “By 2035, there will be a fundamental improvement in the environment; the goal of building a ‘Beautiful China’ will be basically attained,” Xi said, delivering a keynote speech at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit in Vietnam, Xinhua reported.

Among the 1,140 people, nine were investigated for criminal offenses, while 178 officials were punished within the Party discipline, read the statement. Others will be punished by administrative means including being publicly named, admonished and publically apologizing.

“The punishment will not end with disciplinary action. Further laws will be developed with stronger criminal penalties,” Zhu Lijia, a professor of public management at the Chinese Academy of Governance, told the Global Times on Thursday.

American Wrestling Champion Sympathizes with Quake-Hit Iranians

In a Farsi message on his Instagram account addressed to the people of the quake-hit province of Kermanshah, Burroughs condoled with the victims’ families, stressing that he is confident all people are sympathizing with them.

Burroughs went on to say that he has good memories from Kermanshah during World Cup 2017. He also said he was pleased to have the privilege to visit the city and get familiar with its hospitable people.

American Wrestling Champion Sympathizes with Quake-Hit Iranians“I and my family members were sad to hear the news of the quake and I hope the beautiful province of Kermanshah regains its beauty soon.”

He finally expressed the hope that he would visit Iran once again in the near future.

Burroughs is especially popular among Iranian fans.

Earlier this year, in an Instagram post in Persian language, the well-known American wrestler thanked Iranian people for the love they showed for him during the World Cup in Iran, saying he would love to visit the country again.

The London 2012 Olympic champion who took part in the 2017 Freestyle Wrestling World Cup in western province of Kermanshah expressed appreciation for the love and affection Iranian people, particularly the spectators, expressed towards him during his short stay in the country.

On his trip back to the US, he posted a photo on his Instagram, picturing him being greeted and received warmly by his Iranian fans, the caption of which reads, “I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the Iranian people who showed great love and affection for me and my team-mates in Tehran [Iran’s capital] and Kermanshah and extend my warmest congratulation to the Iranian freestyle wrestling team [on their championship] in the current and past editions [of the tournament].”

UK to Pay £400m Debt to Iran in Coming Days: Envoy

Hamid Baeedinejad said on his Telegram channel on Thursday that the over £400-million ($596 million) sum will be transferred to the Central Bank of Iran “in the coming days.”

The Iranian diplomat further expressed regret over certain media attempts to link the debt pay-off to the case of an imprisoned Iranian national.

The payment “with regard to a 1974 arms deal has nothing to do with the case of Nazanin Zaghari who has been arrested in Iran over security charges or to any other issue,” Baeedinejad told reporters on Thursday.

Iran’s intelligence authorities arrested Zaghari at the Imam Khomeini International Airport in April 2016 on spying charges as she was on her way home to London after visiting her parents in Tehran.

Zaghari was subsequently tried in an Iranian court and sentenced to five years in prison for spreading propaganda against the Islamic Republic.

British media have said that she worked for the Thomson Reuters Foundation. However, UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said in a statement to a parliamentary committee last week that Zaghari had been “simply teaching people journalism.”

The Telegraph cited unidentified sources as saying this week that London was planning to transfer the outstanding debt to Iran to have Zaghari released.

The British tabloid daily, The Sun, said Iran had demanded that Britain return the money which the former Shah of Iran paid in 1979 for 1,750 Chieftain tanks and other vehicles, almost none of which was eventually delivered.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Bahram Qassemi, dismissed the report on Thursday, saying that “the British government’s debt pay-off to Iran has no connection to the case of Mrs. Nazanin Zaghari and these two issues are two separate cases.”

British Prime Minister Theresa May’s spokesman also stressed Thursday that there was no link between the £400 million debt owed to Iran and the fate of Zaghari.

Iranian, Turkish Diplomats Discuss Syria Crisis

Jaberi Ansari, who is also the head of the Iranian delegation to Astana Talks on Syria, sat for talks on Friday (November 19) with his Turkish counterpart, Sedat Onal, and Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, Umit Yalchin.

During the talks, the two sides discussed the latest developments of the region and Syria crisis.

Jaberi Ansari arrived in Ankara following his visits to Russia and Syria.

The expert-level meeting of the guarantor states of Astana Talks – Iran, Turkey and Russia – is set to be held in Tehran on Saturday (November 18), which will be followed by a meeting of the three countries’ foreign ministers in Turkey’s Antalya on November 19 and a summit of Iranian, Russian, and Turkish leaders in Russia’s Sochi on November 22.

The latest round of Astana talks is aimed at establishing four so-called “de-escalation zones” in mainly opposition-held areas of Syria, with Russia, Turkey and Iran acting as guarantors.

The meeting is also expected to call for a cessation of hostilities between anti-government groups and forces fighting on behalf of President Bashar al-Assad, for a period of at least six months.

“Iran’s Oil Ministry Showing Tolerance towards France’s Total”

total

Senior Iranian lawmaker Feraydoon Hassanvand says the Director of the French energy giant Total has spoken of a possible review of its agreement with Iran due to legal reasons and a change in the sanctions regime, reports ICANA.

“In the interviews before and after the conclusion of the agreement, the [Iranian] Oil Ministry was given the necessary warnings, and we insisted that the deal not be based on immediate sanctions, but such a thing happened,” said Hassanvand, the chairman of Parliament’s Energy Commission.

“Still, Total has announced it will coordinate [its work] with US policies, and that if it wants to pull out of the agreement, it will do it earlier to pay less damages,” said the legislator.

“If such a thing happens, it will be tantamount to disrespect for legal laws and international regulations, and can set the precedent for violating all international contracts; moreover, Total’s credibility will be undermined as well,” the parliamentarian underlined.

“The move, in fact, shows that Total lacks any credibility and wants to scuttle an international agreement for profiteering in order to secure its interests in some countries,” he noted.

He went on to say that the Iranian Oil Ministry is showing tolerance vis-a-vis Total.

“We already announced that Iran should take the lead and file a lawsuit with domestic and international authorities to receive damages, but the Oil Ministry has shown tolerance so far to find out whether or not Total’s decision is final,” said the MP.

He said the behaviour of the French energy company indicates it is not willing to implement the agreement, adding, “The [Iranian] oil minister should be held answerable for that.”

He said the minister is to attend a meeting of the Parliament’s Energy Commission next week where he will report on the trend of the implementation of the Total agreement, the possibility of Total’s withdrawing from the deal and the legal measures to be adopted.

Iran Warns about Consequences of Saudis’ Divisive Policies

Bahram Qassemi

In a statement on Friday, Qassemi dismissed the latest anti-Iran claims made by Saudi foreign minister and warned about the repercussions of Riyadh’s destructive measures in the region.

“Over the past few years, the regional states have seen no positive measure from Saudi Arabia but violating human rights, sowing the seeds of discord among Arab and Islamic states, repeating baseless claims, imposing siege on its neighbours, threatening and embroiling other states into war, interfering in the internal affairs of other countries with the aim of destabilizing them and launching efforts to violate international deals,” he stressed.

Qassemi said such policies are a serious warning to the region and the whole world, and must be immediately stopped.

“It goes without saying that the gestures of Saudi foreign minister as well the blame-game he plays will not reduce Riyadh’s responsibility in making the region destabilized and insecure,” he concluded.

In a joint press conference with his French counterpart, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said on Thursday the kingdom’s actions in the Middle East were a response to what he called the “aggression” of Iran.
