Iran Leader Calls for Closer Cooperation among Asian States

In a Sunday meeting with visiting Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena in Tehran, the Leader referred to the historical and cultural ties between Iran and sub-continent states including Sri Lanka and said the current level of relations between the two states is way lower than the existing capacities.

“The Islamic Republic is prepared to enhance its friendship and mutual cooperation with Sri Lanka,” he was quoted as saying in a report by the Leader’s website.

Iran’s Leader also underlined the urgent need for implementing the memorandums of understanding signed between Iran and Sri Lanka earlier in the day to boost their mutual ties in various areas.

For his part, Sri Lankan President Sirisena gave his government and nation’s warm regards to Iran’s Leader and said during the Sunday talks, the two countries decided to boost their cooperation.

He described Iran as the most developed states in technical, scientific and academic fields in the region and expressed the hope that his country could benefit from Iran’s achievements.

Iran and Sri Lanka signed five agreements on mutual cooperation in various areas in a Sunday ceremony in Tehran. The ceremony was attended by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Sri Lankan counterpart.

The agreements include four mutual cooperation deals as well as a program on cultural exchanges.

The two sides also signed an agreement on the film industry, and a cultural deal on cultural and scientific exchanges between the two sides.

Iran Condemns Indonesia Church Attacks

In a Sunday statement, Qassemi offered sympathy to the Indonesian nation and government, and the families of the victims of the terrorist attacks.

“Iran condemns any brutal terrorist move carried out by any individual or group under any pretext across the globe,” he said.

The spokesman further noted that the only way to deal with such unpleasant and inhumane moves is unity among all regional and international states and a global resolve to obtain a precise understanding of the main hubs and sponsors of terrorism and to seriously fight against this global and horrible phenomenon free from any double standards.

At least nine people have been killed and 40 others injured in bomb attacks on Indonesian churches on Sunday.

All the deadly blasts occurred within 10 minutes of each other, police said.

ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

At least 400 Indonesians are believed to have previously joined ISIS in Iraq and Syria, where the Takfiri outfit used to control territory.

Iranian, Chinese FMs Discuss Ways to Save JCPOA

During the Sunday meeting, Zarif elaborated on the condition of the Iran nuclear deal before and after the US pullout and said Washington broke the multi-lateral agreement and flagrantly violated the UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

“Now we want to make sure that the Iranian nation can reap the benefits of the deal if it decides to remain in the accord as recommended by the remaining sides of the JCPOA,” he said.

The Iranian top diplomat further noted that it was very important for him to start his intensive talks on the nuclear deal from China.

Iran and China are two friendly countries with strategic partnership which have stood by each other, Zarif said, adding that Iran and China have full cooperation in all areas and Beijing is Tehran’s biggest trade partner.

For his part, the Chinese foreign minister described Iran as a highly significant and influential state and said China is interested in continuing its strategic relations with Iran and will do so in the future.

“Our economic relations with Iran are in progress and the two sides have made long strides in other political, security and many others areas.”

He then called the JCPOA an international agreement which must be observed by all parties.

“There are many states which are unhappy with Trump’s decision to exit the Iran nuclear deal and never support his move. China calls for multilateralism in the international relations and the JCPOA is one of the fruits of such approach,” he noted.

Wang Yi underlined that China’s stance towards the Iran nuclear deal is completely clear and added “it is natural for Iran to remain in the deal without the US if its interests are guaranteed.”

China’s foreign minister also said his country is Iran’s main trade partner and the two sides should defend their legitimate interests against others.

During the talks, the two foreign ministers also exchanged views on a wide range of issues from bilateral to regional and international issues including the JCPOA.

Zarif arrived in China on Sunday at the top of a high-ranking political and economic delegation on the first leg of his diplomatic tour that follows US decision to exit the landmark 2015 nuclear deal. He is also expected to visit Moscow and Brussels as part of efforts to save the deal.

Iran’s Assembly of Experts Urges Rouhani to Apologise for JCPOA

In a Sunday statement, the Assembly of Expert underlined that Iran’s diplomatic apparatus put hard efforts into preserving the JCPOA but in some cases it crossed the red lines set by Leader of the Islamic Revolution.

“Though the Islamic Republic of Iran fulfilled all its pledges under the deal, it failed to receive firm guarantees in return from the other sides and this paved the way for the US withdrawal from the deal,” Alef news website quoted the statement as saying.

The Assembly of Experts went on to say that under the current circumstances, remaining in the deal without getting clear and firm guarantees will not serve Iran’s national interests.

The statement also cast doubt on the loyalty of the European sides of deal when it comes to interaction with Iran and said over the past years the European states have left no stone unturned to violate the Islamic Republic’s interests.

“Therefore, putting our trust in the European states means closing our eyes to the past experiences. In the current situation, it seems the apparent conflicts between the US and the three European states over the fate of the JCPOA are in fact a labour division made among them.”

“In order to prevent other opportunities from being wasted, the Islamic Republic must receive serious and firm guarantees as soon as possible if it is to continue negotiations with the remaining sides of the deal; otherwise an urgent pull-out of the accord is a legal and religious responsibility of the diplomatic apparatus of the country.”

The Assembly of Expert also called on the lawmakers to adopt appropriate measures in response to the US violations of the JCPOA.

It also urged the government to follow up the issue through international channels and make reciprocal measures while apologising to the nation over the deal’s damages.

Palestinian Groups Threaten to Attack Israel amid Conflict with Syria

In a statement reported by Tasnim News Agency, the Popular Resistance Committees called for the opening of all fronts against Israel as the main enemy of Muslims.

The statement said the Muslim and Arab nations must mobilise forces against the Israeli regime.

“We offer our congratulations on the missile response of Syria to aggressions by the enemy. This was a big step in stopping the enemy and standing against its bullying,” it said.

The Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine, another Palestinian group, said the Syrian attacks on Israel were a “natural response” to aggressions by the Zionist regime against Israel.

“The hands of Zionists who try to gain control over Muslims and Arabs should be cut,” it said.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine urged resistance groups to form a joint operation room against Israel.

The Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas, also said in a statement the Israeli attack was “proof that Israel is the main enemy of the Arab nation and is mongering terror in the region.”

“The Arab and Muslim countries in the region have the right to respond with force against any act of aggression,” it said.

“The Arab nation is required to put all of its energies into deterring the enemy and thwarting its plans,” the Palestinian organization added.

Forces in Israel and Syria exchanged missile fire early Thursday, during which dozens of Israeli military sites and Syrian bases were targeted.

Iran, Sri Lanka Sign 5 Cooperation Agreements

The ceremony where the documents were signed was attended by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his visiting Sri Lankan counterpart Maithripala Sirisena, reported the Iranian government’s website dolat.ir.

The agreements include four mutual cooperation deals as well as a program on cultural exchanges.

The cooperation documents include an agreement on fighting narcotics and psychoactive drugs, an agreement on health, medical sciences, medicines and medical equipment, and agreement between the Iranian Standardization and Industrial Research Institute and the Sri Lankan Standardization Institute on standardization, measurement, training, laboratory services and issuing certificates.

They also signed an agreement on the film industry, and a cultural deal on cultural and scientific exchanges between the two sides.

Eight ISIS Terrorists Sentenced to Death for Role in Tehran Attacks

The eight, all of them operatives of the ISIS terror group, were found guilty of being accessories to “promotion of corruption on earth,” and received the death penalty, said Mousa Ghazanfarabadi, the head of revolution courts of Tehran.

According to Fars News Agency, the defendants (convicts) or their legal attorneys will be notified of the court ruling, and they will have 20 days to appeal, said the top official.

“After an appeal is made, the case will be referred to the country’s Supreme Court where a decision will be made on the finality of the verdict,” he noted.

He said eighteen other defendants of the case will be tried in due time.

On 7 June 2017, two attacks were simultaneously carried out by a number of ISIS terrorists  on the Iranian Parliament building and the holy shrine of the founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini, both in Tehran. The attacks left 17 civilians dead and 43 wounded. The shootings were the first terrorist attacks in Tehran in more than a decade, and the first major terror attack in the country since the 2010 Zahedan bombings.

Iranian security services stated on 8 June, 2017, that they had identified the militants responsible for the twin events, disclosing the men’s first names, and detailed that they had entered Iran in August 2016. The terrorists reportedly served in a clandestine cell linked to Wahhabi-related networks.

Iran President May Visit Switzerland, Austria in July: Source

The source told Asr-e Iran news website that plans are being made for the Iranian president’s visits to the European countries.

This comes as President Rouhani earlier urged the foreign ministry to start intensive talks with European parties to the Iran nuclear deal and urge them to give Tehran assurances that it will be able to reap the benefits of JCPOA after the US withdrawal.

Accordingly, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif is currently visiting the Chinese capital of Beijing to hold talks on the Iran nuclear deal. He will later leave China for Moscow where he will discuss the Islamic Republic’s decision on the nuclear deal with Russian officials.

Finally, Zarif will visit Brussels to attend a meeting with his British, French, and German counterparts as well as EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini. The Tuesday meeting will be decisive for Tehran and other parties to the nuclear deal as the Islamic Republic’s staying in the nuclear deal hinges on Europe’s stance.

JCPOA Institutionalised Iran Sanctions Instead of Stopping Them: IRGC

General Jafari said officials are not paying attention to the potentialities inside the country, and this has augmented the impact of Western sanctions.

“We have a lot of potential and capabilities inside the country, but we are facing strategic negligence, which means officials are not paying enough attention to local potentialities, and instead of looking inside, they are looking outside [the country],” he said, as reported by Fars News Agency.

“Inattention to domestic capabilities and the local agriculture domain led the enemies to using sanctions as a lever to pressure the country,” said the top commander.

He said the enemies of Iran accused the Islamic Republic of seeking to develop nukes and put pressure on the country, but “the nuclear industry is an essential need of the country.”

“Anyway, discussions and negotiations in recent years boiled down to the JCPOA, which turned into a tool to institutionalise rather than prevent sanctions against our country,” he said.

The top commander said Washington’s withdrawal from the agreement was yet another reason to believe that the White House cannot be trusted.

“Today, we are seeing once again that the US is not reliable. The United States’ move was aimed at shattering Iran’s resistance and is not something new, and we’ve been witnessing wicked moves by enemies for years, so we need to rely on ourselves and look [at the potential] inside [the country],” the top commander underlined.

He said if Iran focuses on domestic capabilities, it will not need Western countries at all.

The commander noted that European countries should give Iran assurances that the country’s interests under the JCPOA will be preserved, “but they are unlikely to give such guarantees, in which case we should move on the path to self-sufficiency and nuclear industry using domestic potential.”
