‘EU’s Channel for Trade with Iran to Become Operational Soon’

In an interview with IRNA, the spokesperson said the EU is completely committed to the Iran nuclear deal as a sign of its respect for all international and security treaties in the world.

“The EU expects the Islamic Republic to play a constructive role in this field and remain committed to its pledges under the nuclear accord,” he was quoted as saying.

The spokesman who spoke on condition of anonymity went on to say that the JCPOA is based on certain bases, and as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed in 13 reports, Iran remains fully committed to its pledges under the deal.

“As the Islamic Republic of Iran has always underlined, its nuclear program is totally peaceful and the IAEA’s reports reveal no deviation in it,” he said.

The spokesman then noted that there is no peaceful alternative to the nuclear deal and that the EU has adopted effective strategies to preserve the JCPOA following the US withdrawal from the deal.

“We have already updated the regulations of blocking banking accounts as well as offering facilities by the European Investment Bank. Meanwhile, the European sides of the JCPOA, France, Germany and UK are fully committed to preserving the nuclear accord and continuing their trade ties with Iran through the Special Purpose Vehicle,” he said.

He underlined that the SPV is on the verge of becoming operational.

The Iran nuclear deal was signed in 2015 after marathon talks between Tehran and the P5+1 group of countries. But US President Donald Trump unilaterally left the deal in May 2018 and re-imposed his country’s sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

The remaining sides of the JCPOA have unanimously condemned the US for the illegal withdrawal and declared on various occasions their commitment to the deal. They also underlined that Iran should be able to reap the economic fruits of the deal.

To this end, the EU has already provided European firms with a legal chance to keep their ties with Iran without any concern about the US sanctions.

Meanwhile, the bloc is working on the special mechanism (SPV) to maintain its financial ties with Iran.

Mogherini Not to Attend Warsaw Conference on Iran

The spokesman then referred to the upcoming Iran-focused conference to be held in the Polish capital of Warsaw and said the European Union Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini will not take part in the event due to her tight schedule.

Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif lashed out at the conference due to be held by the US next month, describing it as a “desperate circus” that will disgrace the participants.

His comments came after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Fox News in an interview that Washington will jointly host the global summit focused on Iran and the Middle East in mid-February in Poland.

Time for Iran-US Talks, Former Deputy FM Argues

Abbas Maleki, a deputy foreign minister in the 1990s and a member of the Iranian team who negotiated an end to the Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988), made the statement in an interview with Shargh daily published on Thursday.

Time for Iran-US Talks, Former Deputy FM ArguesMaleki said Trump, despite his unpredictable behaviour, could be one of the best negotiators for Iran.

“If the Islamic Republic system believes it is ok to hold negotiations with the US, I believe that the Trump administration is one of the best sides it can talk with,” he said.

The former diplomat argued Republican presidents are generally in favour of talks with Iran.

“The history of Iran-US talks shows Iran has reached the majority of agreements with Republicans and most of the sanctions have been imposed by Democrats,” he said.

Trump Faces Big Mideast Problems

Maleki said Trump faces many problems inside the US, particularly with the Congress which has shut down his government.

Moreover, Trump is gripping with big difficulties in the region, demonstrated in his December 19 announcement that the country would withdraw from Syria, he said.

Maleki said the US decision to pull out from Syria and a separate move to withdraw a significant number of forces from Afghanistan shows the Trump administration is in trouble.

“The US withdrawal from Syria shows the US government has reached a conclusion it can no longer afford to pay for human and logistics costs of its presence in the region,” he said.

The former diplomat said that unlike the US, Iran has achieved big victories in the region and would have the upper hand in talks with the US.

“On the one hand, Iran has many winning cards in the region and on the other hand, Americans are feeling immense pressure,” he said.

US Differences with Mideast Allies Chance for Iran

Moreover, Maleki said the US differences with Turkey and Saudi Arabia, its traditional allies in the region, give other players a rare opportunity to boost their role.

“Qatar is using this chance. Qatar’s pullout from OPEC is aimed at attracting the US,” he said, arguing Iran a big regional player like Iran should use similar chances to ease problems with the US.

“… Other players in the region are in a deadlock. Why shouldn’t Iran use this chance to advance its interests?” he said.

The top general, who was heading a top military delegation to Azerbaijan, made the remarks in a meeting with Azerbaijan’s National Parliament Speaker, Ogtay Asadov.

During the meeting, the Iranian military commander called for strengthening of ties with Azerbaijan in all areas, underlined the need for peaceful resolution of regional disputes and protection of Iranian borders and expressed the Islamic Republic’s support for Azerbaijan’s sovereignty.

Today the development of mutual ties between Iran and Azerbaijan is highly significant, he said.

For his part, the Azeri official described the ties between Iran and Azerbaijan as friendly and said there are lots of commonalities between the two sides.

“There are appropriate grounds for strengthening mutual ties based on good-faith and common values,” he said.

He then referred to the significant role by the two sides’ officials in developing mutual ties and said over the past five years, the presidents of Iran and Azerbaijan have made 12 reciprocal visits to Tehran and Baku and held extensive talks on mutual interests.

“The high-level talks have had positive effects on the two sides’ relations so much so that the trade volume of the two sides increased from $257m in 2017 to $400m in the first nine months of 2018,” he noted.

Asadov expressed hope that the operation of the International North-South Transport Corridor would help the two sides further develop their trade ties.

He also called for tapping into the economic capacities of the two neighbours.

Elaborating on the parliamentary ties between the two sides, he said the relations are ongoing at a high level.

He thanked the Iran-Azerbaijan parliamentary friendship group and said the regular participation of the two sides’ lawmakers in international forums are highly significant for tackling regional issues.

Jordan Rejects US’ Call for Joining ‘Arab NATO’ against Iran

The report by Alkhaleej Online, quoting sources close to the Jordan government, said the US has requested Jordan on several occasions to join the alliance which is going to be built up in the next couple of weeks against the Islamic Republic and Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement.

“The negative response by the Jordanian government to Pomepo’s request has been resolute and decisive,” Alkhaleej Online said.

According to the report, given its bad experience of war on Syria which had serious fallouts, Jordan has no intention to join any regional or international alliance in the future.

“Meanwhile, Jordan has told the US officials that the country is set to improve its relations with all of the neighbouring states. Meanwhile, Jordan plans to mediate between the Houthis and Yemen’s former government to protect Yemenis’ interests,” the report added.

Earlier, Jordanian Foreign Minister Kamel Abu Jaber announced that his country is revising its regional and international stances to better protect its national interests. To this end, he said, Jordan has no plan to join any new alliance in the future.

In an interview with Alkhaleej Online on Jordan’s ties with Iran, Hamed Al-Kharisha, Head of Strategic Studies Centre in Jordan, said Amman has always sought to improve relations with the regional states but “we should also take into account the country’s relations with the US. In overall, Jordan is trying to establish a new framework without entering any new regional alliance.”

He went on to say that Jordan has reached the conclusion that economic interests are more important compared with political issues. “Jordan is seeking to play the role of a regional firefighter and do whatever in its power to prevent regional tensions like what we see in Yemen and Syria.”

Al-Kharisha underlined that Jordan is against any anti-Iran policies and said Amman is seeking to normalize its ties with the regional states.

Jordan recently called for returning its ambassador to Qatar after recalling him under the pressure of Saudi Arabia last year. A former deputy prime minister has also called for improving ties with Tehran.

JCPOA Has Thwarted Efforts to Securitise Iran: Zarif

Jcpoa

“3 years ago on this day, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action entered into force, ending years of securitisation of Iran,” he tweeted on Wednesday.

The implementation of the deal was started in January 2016, in an attempt to settle a long-standing nuclear standoff between Iran and the West.

Zarif said the Iranian nation has managed to shatter the myth of US omnipotence despite Washington’s anti-Iran plots.

“In spite of US machinations v. Iran for the past 40 years— & its withdrawal from JCPOA— Iranians have shattered the myth of US omnipotence,” he said, referring to May pullout of the US from the 2015 nuclear deal.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araqchi also marked the third anniversary of the implementation of the deal, saying it showed how untrustworthy the US is.

“Today is the 3rd anniversary of the implementation of [the] Iran nuclear deal which displayed how untrustworthy and unreliable the US is,” Araqchi said in a tweet on Thursday morning.

“A president signs, the next withdraws! Thank you President [Donald] Trump for exhibiting this. Shame.”

US Arrest of Press TV’s Journo Violates Freedom of Expression: Zarif

Zarif

In an interview with Al Alam News Network on Wednesday, the Iranian top diplomat urged the US officials to immediately free the Iranian-American Muslim journalist of Press TV, Marzieh Hashemi.

“The husband of Ms Hashemi was Iranian. So, she is deemed as an Iranian citizen and we feel duty-bound to defend the rights of our citizens,” he was quoted as saying in a report by Fars News Agency.

Zarif underlined that Ms Hashemi is a journalist and her professional life and career is completely clear.

Earlier, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi condemned the US for detaining Ms Hashemi and said the Islamic Republic demands the US government to provide the journalist with all her basic and human rights and release her from the illegal detention immediately and without any precondition.

Hashemi was arrested in an airport in the US city of St Louis on Sunday, and has been taken to a facility in Washington DC by the FBI.

Hashemi is being held in jail without any charges. She was born in the United States and used to live in Iran before the detention. The Muslim journalist has been working for Press TV for over a decade.
