Tehran to Host Six-Nation Conference on Fight against Terrorism

Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani attends a conference with his counterparts from Pakistan, China, Russia, Afghanistan, and Turkey in Islamabad on December 24, 2017

During the conference, which is to be held Friday and Saturday (December 6 and 7) in Hotel Azadi in Tehran, several issues will be discussed, including fight against terrorism, past experiences, current strategies, adoption of new and efficient regional approaches, expansion of communications, strengthening regional cooperation, and restoring peace and multilateral development in the region.

On Saturday, Pakistan’s parliament speaker as the first head of the inter-parliamentarian gathering will hand over the leadership of the conference to his Iranian counterpart after delivering a short speech.

Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani and his counterparts from the participating states will also deliver speeches during the conference.

The first conference of Parliament speakers attended by delegates from the six countries was held last year in Islamabad.

‘Iran to Maintain Scientific Growth despite US Sanctions’

COVID-19 Punishes Those Who Sanctioned Iran’s Oil: First VP

In an address to the closing ceremony of an international congress on stem cell and regenerative medicine in Tehran, Jahangiri said Iran has made great achievements in various areas thanks to the hard attempts by professors, researchers and the growing number of students in modern technologies.

The Iranian official then referred to the US “brutal” sanctions against Iran and added the US is seeking to hamper Iran’s progress “but we should turn the threats into opportunities.”

He underlined that any scientific development should be peaceful and humane. “The Islamic Republic has never been after developing unethical and destructive sciences.”

Jahanngiri referred to the nuclear program of Iran and said despite international bodies’ reports on peaceful nature of Iran’s program, the enemies are still seeking to level baseless accusations against the country.

He also noted that many researchers outside Iran are interested in holding cooperation with the Islamic Republic and the government has prepared the ground for such cooperation. “In stem cell, Iranian researchers have achieved considerable growth.”

He called on all Iranians scientists living across the world to expand their ties with their fellow compatriots, saying the government will do its best to remove any obstacles in the way of their cooperation.

The first vice president also said Iran extends the hand of cooperation to all scientific centers in the world and welcomes their investments in the country.

Grape Grown in Iran’s Malayer Registered Globally

The GIAHS is an initiative of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), aimed at identifying, introducing and protecting global agricultural heritage, says Mohammad Kazemi, the representative of the people of Malayer in the Parliament.

He said FAO representatives visited Malayer on November 15 to look into the possibility of registering its grapes as part of GIAHS. Then, the final examinations were conducted on December 1, and the permission to register the crop was finally issued.

“This major event added to the honours of the town of golden grapes,” said the lawmaker.

Located in Hamadan province, Malayer is referred to as the city of “The Golden Bunches of Grapes” and is known to many for its high-quality grape syrup, raisin, and sultana. The raisin and sultana produced in Malayer are among the best ones in Iran and account for part of Hamadan’s exports annually.

Malayer has around 10,500 grape orchards, more than 10,100 of which are currently fertile and yielding crops, giving the town a unique status in the country.

Most of the grapes produced in Malayer are used to make raisins and sultanas. There are also many types of grapes that are grown there to be used as fresh fruit.

A top provincial agricultural official says there are some 73 hectares of grape orchards in Hamadan province.

“Thirty percent of the orchards are located in Malayer, and between 50 and 60 percent of the grapes in Hamadan province are produced in Malayer,” says the official.

‘1,000 Bahraini Women Activists behind Bars’

Bahraini Women

Bahrain’s Al-Wefaq party made the announcement in a statement marking National Women’s Day in Bahrain (December 1). The statement reads that some 994 women who demand the establishment of democracy, social justice and freedom in the country are currently in jail.

“Bahraini women have secured considerable achievements on different fronts, but the Al-Khalifa regime’s repressive and discriminatory measures are regarded as an impediment to the progress and innovation of Bahraini women,” the statement reads.

“These biased and discriminatory policies have kept thousands of women graduates from entering the job market and starting a career,” it added.

“Bahraini women are subject to the Al-Khalifa regime’s most severe repressive, tyrannical and discriminatory actions. Any freedom-seeking activity by Bahraini women is met with the worst forms of torture and incarceration at the al-Khalifa regime’s prisons,” the party said.

“Among other brutal actions by the Bahrain regime against women is to strip some mothers of their nationality without paying attention to the situation of their children,” it went on to say.

Bahraini people have been holding peaceful protest rallies regularly since February 2011, demanding that the Al-Khalifa family relinquish power and let a just system representing all Bahrainis be established.

They have also been complaining against widespread discrimination against the Shia majority in the country.

Manama has responded to the demonstrations with an iron fist. The authorities have detained rights campaigners, broken up major opposition political parties, revoked the nationality of several pro-democracy activists, and deported those left stateless.

Iran Rejects Pompeo’s Claim, Says Missile Program ‘for Defence’

In a Sunday statement, Qassemi underlined that Iran’s missile program is defensive in nature and has been drawn up based on the country’s needs.

“No UN Security Council resolution has banned Iran’s missile program or missile tests,” Qassemi noted.

“The interesting and of course farcical point here is that you are referring to a resolution that you have not only violated by unilaterally and illegally withdrawing from the JCPOA, but also you urge others to breach it, and even threaten to punish or slap sanctions on them if they implement the agreement,” he said.

Pompeo on Saturday condemned what he described as Iran’s testing of a medium-range ballistic missile capable of carrying multiple warheads as a violation of the UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

Pompeo warned in a statement released on Twitter that Iran is increasing its “testing and proliferation” of missiles and called on the Islamic Republic to “cease these activities.”

Iran Pioneer of Stem Cell Technology in Middle East: VP

Stem Cell

Iran Pioneer of Stem Cell Technology in Middle East: VPSattari on Saturday said the development and advancement of stem cells knowledge is one of the key opportunities provided for knowledge-based companies.

He made the comments at the closing ceremony of an international congress on stem cells and regenerative medicines.

“The amazing and significant growth that has taken place in Iran over the past few years in the field of stem cells and regenerative medicines has raised the hope that it could improve the country’s position in the spheres of knowledge and technology.”

Sattari also noted that the advancement of science and technology can empower the country in wealth creation, employment and export in the near future.

According to Sattari, Iran has been able to beat others in the Middle East including Turkey and Israel in the stem cell technology. “Iran now has the first rank in science and technology in the region,” he noted.

He said the prosperity of knowledge-based companies and those that are active in the field of stem cells and regenerative medicines proves that the country is able to develop knowledge and commercialise the technology.

“More than 120 Iranian companies work in the field of stem cells. More than 80 companies now have realised the importance of their activities and try to show their role in improving the country’s knowledge-based economy. This comes as it was impossible to think of the presence of such a huge number of active companies a few years ago.”

Iran Pioneer of Stem Cell Technology in Middle East: VP“We are promoting the technology as a culture, so that we can introduce students to the owners of the knowledge-based companies as researchers of the future.”

Sattari
underlined that if the Islamic Republic wants to broaden its research activities, it should play a great role in the country’s economy and have a great portion of GDP. To achieve this, it is important to promote the private investment and private sector activities in the field of knowledge-based companies.

According to the official, the emergence of successful knowledge-based companies with the ability to create added value and employment depends on coordination with various organisations.

For a brief review of Iran’s achievements in various fields of science and technology, check the book “Science and Technology in Iran: A Brief Review

He stressed that one of the main missions of the vice presidency is to create this convergence and coordination.

Sattari went on to say that the development of the knowledge-based economy has been on the agenda of President Rouhani’s administration. “This strategy led to the launch of more than 3,700 companies and thousands of startups with an income of over five billion USD in for the country.”

At the end of this ceremony, the winners in every field were awarded by the high-ranking officials of the country.

Iran to Start New Cloud Seeding Project

In comments on Saturday, Farid Golkar said his organization works in cooperation with the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force to carry out cloud seeding projects across the country.

The operations will be performed with planes in the provinces of Yazd, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, Kohgiluye and Boyer-Ahmad, Isfahan, Khuzestan, Kerman and Fars, he added, saying drones will be flown for cloud seeding in the provinces of South Khorasan, East Azarbaijan and West Azarbaijan.

If financed, the project will include ground-based generators in the western province of Kermanshah, Golkar noted.

In January, IRGC Aerospace Force Commander Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh voiced readiness to help the Energy Ministry to carry out cloud seeding operations, saying his forces were at the Iranian nation’s service and would mobilize all equipment to help the administration.

It came after frequent droughts and low rainfall in Iran in last autumn forced the administration to opt for cloud seeding in the hope of squeezing more precipitation out of the atmosphere.

Cloud seeding originated in the US in the 1940s. The method generally used in the winter involves ground-based generators set at high elevations that are literally fired up to release plumes containing silver iodide crystals into storm clouds. When water vapor or droplets attach to the silver iodide crystal, latent heat is also released, and it increases cloud size and the duration of storms.

Global warming has forced many arid and semi-arid areas around the world, including Iran, to suffer from drought.

Iran DM Denies US Claim It’s Arming Yemen’s Houthis

“Today, Yemen has become a thorn in the eye of the Americans,” Brigadier General Hatami said in a speech on Saturday.

The Americans are falsely accusing Iran of supporting the Yemenis militarily and say that Iranians did not allow them to gain victory in Yemen, he said.

“They (the Americans) think the Yemeni people’s resistance is because of Iran’s support but our support is spiritual,” the defense minister stated.

What leads to victory is the spirit of resistance of the nations who are not willing to give in to the oppressions of the Americans, he added.

The Trump administration on Thursday accused Iran of stepping up violations of a UN ban on arms exports by sending rockets and other weaponry to Afghanistan and Yemen.

Yemen’s defenseless people have been under massive attacks by a coalition led by the Saudi regime for more than three-and-a-half years but Riyadh has reached none of its objectives in Yemen so far.

Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies have been carrying out deadly airstrikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

The Yemeni Ministry of Human Rights announced in a statement on March 25 that the war had left 600,000 civilians dead and injured until then. The war and the accompanying blockade have also caused famine across Yemen.

US Fails to Impose Its Will on OPCW Members: Iran

An undated photo of the headquarters of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in The Hague, the Netherlands

The Fourth Review Conference of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) failed to ratify a document which had the consensus of all member states due to the US objection.

The conference held in The Hague on November 21-30 and presided over by El Salvador envoy to the OPCW fell short of finalizing the document despite having the approval of most member states.

Discussion on the final draft of the document was on the agenda of the conference and the document had achieved the consensus agreement of most member states despite some slight differences remaining among them.

Despite the rough consensus made earlier, the US representative at the OPCW slammed member states for their agreement with the membership of the Palestinian government in the organization as well as their silence towards western accusations against Syrian government over what is described as use of chemical weapons against civilians.

The American envoy underlined that the document should also include a new point giving the OPCW the authority to identify and accuse a country of using chemical weapons.

The US delegate then said the consensus on the agreement should not distract efforts to define use of chemical weapons by the organization. He also repeated some unfounded accusations against Russia, Syria, Iran and Venezuela and expressed his dissatisfaction with the draft document.

Following in his footsteps, delegates from some western states like Canada, France and Britain expressed their dissatisfaction with the document.

Even unofficial negotiations by the chairperson of the conference couldn’t convince the western states to approve the draft document.

In his address to the conference, Director General of the Department of International Peace and Security at the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Reza Najafi, rejected the baseless accusations levelled by the US, saying Washington is hampering the conference’s efforts as the world’s biggest user of weapons of mass destruction and a leading violator of international regulations.

According to Najafi, the OPCW has set a good record over the past 20 years by working efficiently based on the principle of “Security for All”.

“Politicizing the OPCW operations in this conference and adopting factional policies in interpreting the organization’s regulations will create a dangerous division in the structure of the OPCW with final collapse of the world body in prospect,” he said.

The Iranian officials then underlined that the US can’t impose its will on the OPCW member states by manipulating the legal procedures of the organization.

”As the biggest user of weapons of mass destruction including chemical weapons and the main sponsor of such weapons for former Iraqi dictator and terrorist groups in the region, the US is not in a position to judge the member states,” he said.

Elsewhere, Najafi said with its destructive and divisive policies, the US has already violated its international pledges and thus lacks the credibility to cast doubt on the decisions made by the board of directors of the organization.

Najafi underlined that given the failure of the conference to achieve the goals on the agenda, the main issue lingering in mind is the future of the organization.

“As the main victim of chemical weapons, the Islamic Republic has always condemned any use of such weapons by anyone under any condition in any part of the world. We are committed to our pledges and withhold no efforts to create a world totally free from chemical weapons. We are completely prepared to establish constructive and multilateral cooperation with other member states. We should take lessons from the past and take steps towards a bright future.”

The official blamed the politically-motivated policies of certain western states to impose their desired points on the document and said these states are seeking to dictate their points to the organization.

“With such policies, they are creating divisions in the international body. This will only push the OPCW towards collapse if no preemptive measure is taken soon,” he noted.

Najafi also underlined the policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran to hold talks and find an appropriate way to resolve the current problems.

The Fourth Review Conference of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons ended without any tangible result.
