Two States Would’ve Fallen to ISIS without IRGC, Rouhani Tells Macron

Hassan Rouhani - President of the Islamic Republic of Iran

The Iranian president made the remarks in a Tuesday phone conversation with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, in reaction to the recent move by the US to designate the IRGC a “terrorist organization”.

Rouhani described the move as a “very provocative, dangerous, and unprecedented” one in the history of international relations, and said it was made at the request of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as explicitly admitted by him.

“Without the sacrifices made by the IRGC forces, at least two regional states would have fallen to the ISIS terrorist group by now,” the Iranian president said.

“Through their sacrifices and efforts, the IRGC forces dealt a heavy blow to the ISIS and other terrorist groups in the region,” he noted.

Rouhani’s comments came after Trump on Monday released a statement designating the IRGC “a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) under Section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act.”

In reaction to the designation, Iran labeled the US CENTCOM as a terrorist organization, and threatened that US forces in the region would not have calm anymore.

Rouhani, however, told Macron on Tuesday that the Iranian government is resolved to protect regional security and prevent tensions from growing.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian president referred to the Iran nuclear deal and Europe’s commitments under the 2015 accord, saying that both sides of the important deal must fully implement their obligations, so that Iran would be able to reap the legitimate economic benefits of JCPOA.

“Despite living up to its commitments, Iran has yet to see any considerable practical move by the other side,” he added, highlighting 14 reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency confirming Iran’s compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

He also called for accelerated and effective implementation of the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) introduced by Europe within the frameworks enshrined in the agreement.

Macron, for his part, once again underlined that Paris and its European partners are seriously pursuing the implementation of all their commitments under the deal.

“France is closely monitoring the regional developments, and will do its best to secure Iran’s interests under the JCPOA,” he said.

France and its other European partners will do their utmost to encourage the US to moderate sanctions against Iran, Macron said, highlighting the “highly significant” role of Russia and China in this area.

He also expressed sympathy with the Iranian nation and government, particularly the families of the flood victims, saying that his country decides to dispatch humanitarian aid to the people affected.

Heavy floods have affected at least 23 of the country’s 31 provinces since heavy downpours began on March 19, killing over 70 people so far.

Major floods have been reported in the provinces of Golestan, Mazandaran, Gilan, Kordestan, Ilam, Lorestan, Fars, Northern Khorasan, Kermanshah, Khuzestan, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad as well as Sistan and Baluchestan.

Historical Wall in Northern Iran Resistant to Devastating Floods

“Some stretches of the Historical Wall of Gorgan in Gomishan and Aq-Qala areas are still under water, but this historical wall is not facing the threat of possible destruction as the water [which has inundated it] keeps flowing,” said Ebrahim Karimi, the director general of the provincial Cultural Heritage Department.

The Great Wall of Gorgan

Speaking in an interview with ISNA, he said provincial protection units have been deployed along the wall. He added the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps is constructing a canal to direct water toward the sea.

“Based on the arrangements made, the path of the canal does not run from under the wall, and this means the wall is fortunately facing no threat of destruction,” he stated.

Another official has also weighed in on the issue.

“The Gorgan Wall runs parallel with the Gorganrood River. In its western part, the wall is almost level with the ground. So, the wall is not that high,” said Jebrail Nokandeh, who is in charge of archaeological research on the Historical Wall of Gorgan.

He said the wall goes back to the Sassanid era and used to have a moat with a width of 30 metres.

“After all, all sites had moats during the Sassanid era,” he noted.

This archaeologist said the wall was, in fact, a system to contain floods.

Historical Wall in Northern Iran Resistant to Devastating FloodsHe said the wall also had military applications.

He noted parts of the wall runs across the river bed, and some parts lie under the ground.

“The wall is under the ground in Gomishan area as well, and almost no brick can be seen on the surface,” he said.

He added there used to be castle-cities on the Gorgan plain, and that no one lost their lives when floods hit those castle-cities as they had minor and major canals as well as moats, which kept water from getting in.

He said there is also a water canal in the north of Aqqola going back to the Sassanid era.

Meanwhile, experts say the wall should not remain under water for long.

Historical Wall in Northern Iran Resistant to Devastating Floods“If the Gorgan wall remains under water for a long time, that will affect the wall’s architecture. However, mainly the moat next to the wall has been filled with water so far, and the moat has not been affected,” said Hamid Omrani, the director of a cultural heritage office charged with protecting the Gorgan wall.

He said a 40-kilometre stretch of the wall has been deluged, and roughly 70 to 80 kilometres of the wall have been affected. According to him, parts of the moats, wall and associated castles are also being threatened by water in some parts.

However, the wall could serve as a perfect barrier to hinder the flow of the recent deluges.

Iran Unveils over 100 New Nuclear Achievements

The accomplishments are in various fields and industries including exploration, fuel cycle, technical issues, laser development, power plants, extraction and therapy.

Rouhani unveiled 105 new nuclear achievements at an exhibition which was held on the sidelines of a ceremony to mark anniversary of the nuclear technology day on Tuesday.

At the same time, he unveiled five other achievements including a nuclear propulsion controller, an advanced radio diagnostic in the treatment of liver cancer, a quantum technology system, an integrated zonal centrifuge, and the FTIR infrared spectrometer.

The president also launched the installation of new centrifuges and semi-industrial production of IR6 centrifuges in Isfahan, Natanz and Fordow through videoconference.

At this ceremony, Iran’s nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi said the new achievements are paralleled with the guidelines of the International Atomic Energy Organisation.

Iran Appoints Takht-Ravanchi as New Ambassador to UN

Takht-Ravanchi

According to Qassemi, the designation came at the recommendation of Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and upon the approval of President Hassan Rouhani.

“Currently, Mr Takht- Ravanchi is serving as deputy chief of staff of the Iranian president for political affairs,” said Qassemi.

“During his years of service at the Foreign Ministry, he has served in capacities such as Iran’s ambassador and deputy permanent representative to the UN, Iran’s ambassador to Bern, deputy foreign minister for European and American affairs, and special assistant to the foreign minister,” said the spokesman.

Dr Takht-Ravanchi was also a senior member of Iran’s negotiating team during sensitive and important nuclear talks, which finally led to the conclusion of the Iran nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

US Attempts to Counter IRGC Will Get Nowhere: Iran Leader

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei made the comment in a Monday meeting with a host of IRGC staff and their families.

He said the reason behind the Americans’ animosity towards the IRGC is that it has taken the lead in defending the country and the Islamic Revolution.

“The United States and insane enemies have tried their utmost for forty years to counter the Islamic Republic, but they failed to do a damn thing,” said the Leader.

Ayatollah Khamenei said the IRGC is a prominent institution and is at the forefront of the campaign against enemies on different fronts, including in the battlefield as well as in political confrontation.

IRGC to Get Even More Popular after US Blacklisting: Rouhani

“The Americans believe they are hatching plots against the IRGC and, in fact, against the revolution and Iran,” said the Leader.

However, he added, Washington’s hostility will get nowhere and its deception and duplicity will boomerang.

“The enemies of the Islamic Republic such as Trump and the fools surrounding him and the ruling system in the US are reaching their nadir,” said Ayatollah Khamenei.

The Leader underlined the enemies of Iran have been exerting political, economic and propaganda pressure on the Iranian nation for forty years, but to no avail.

He said Iran’s dignity and power are not because of nuclear bombs, but due to the people’s resistance, devotion and vigilance.

The Leader’s comments came a few hours after US President Donald Trump named the IRGC a foreign terrorist organisation.

IRGC to Get Even More Popular after US Blacklisting: Rouhani

Hassan Rouhani - President of the Islamic Republic of Iran

“This mistake will unite Iranians and the IRGC will grow more popular in Iran and the region,” Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday.

His comments came after Washington labelled Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps as a foreign terrorist organisation. Tehran took retaliatory action by naming the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) as a terrorist organisation and the US government as a sponsor of terror.

Rouhani defended the IRGC as protectors of Iran saying that the IRGC members have sacrificed their lives to protect people, and (1979) revolution.

“Who are you to label revolutionary institutions as terrorists?” Rouhani asked in an address to a conference marking the country’s Nuclear Technology Day.

“You want to use terrorist groups as tools against the nations of the region. You are the leader of world terrorism,” he said.

US Attempts to Counter IRGC Will Get Nowhere: Iran Leader

Rouhani said this unprecedented step will heighten tensions in the Middle East.

He hailed the moves by the IRGC in the region underlining that the military force helped countries in the region like Syria and Iraq in recent years to defeat ISIS.

The Iranian president also added that Washington tried to use ISIS as a tool for its own purposes and still protests its leaders. “America has used terrorists as a tool in the region while the IRGC has fought against them.”

He further pointed out that the move cannot hamper the Islamic Republic’s military or technological progress.

“I am telling you, if you pressure us, we will mass produce IR-8 advanced centrifuges,” Rouhani said, addressing US leaders.

Iranian MPs Chant ‘Death to America’ Wearing IRGC Uniform

During the Tuesday morning meeting of the parliament, Speaker Ali Larijani strongly lashed out at the United States for labeling the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps as a foreign terrorist organisation.

Larijani said the US move shows its witlessness. He also noted that the IRGC is the most important force that fights terrorists in the region.

“The disgraceful behaviour of the US regime, which has rudely declared the IRGC a terror organisation, is an indication of the grudge and stupidity of this regime.”

‘Iran No Longer Sees US Forces in Mideast as Ordinary Soldiers’

He said it was the IRGC which crushed terror groups that were causing chaos in the region in recent years.

Larijani further added that Washington is the main backer of terrorist groups like ISIS. He said all Iranians support the IRGC.

Meanwhile, Parliament’s Deputy Speaker Ali Motahari said the move was the last ploy by the US and the parliament will ratify a law on Tuesday to support the IRGC.

“The Americans made a big mistake because the IRGC is a popular organisation among Iranians and in the region. Labeling IRGC as terrorist group shows their weakness,” underlined Motahari.

On Monday, US President Donald Trump named the IRGC a terrorist organisation. This move drew Iranian condemnation and raised concerns about Iran’s retaliatory moves.

Water Flowing Again Beneath Ancient Barrage in Southern Iran

Amir Barrage was built in the time of Adud al-Dawla of Buyid dynasty who ruled Iran from 949 to 983 AD. The barrage is located at the end of Marvdasht Plain, 10 km south-east of Marvdasht County.

With downpours during this year’s Nowruz, the Kor River’s flow increased after years of drought and people came to see water flowing under the Band-e-Amir.

Here are photos of the barrage taken from IRNA:

‘Iran No Longer Sees US Forces in Mideast as Ordinary Soldiers’

US Marine Corps General Kenneth F. McKenzie, Commander US Central Command, which was officially labelled as a terrorist organization by Iran's Supreme National Security Council on April 8, 2019

Seyyed Abbas Araqchi made the comment after the White House put Iran’s Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) on its list of foreign terrorist organizations.

“From now on, US troops in the [Middle East] region will not be ordinary soldiers from our point of view. They are terrorist forces, and US bases in the region are also terror bases, and the way we deal with them will definitely be different from that of the past,” he said.

He said Iran has sent to the US a clear message in that regard via the embassy of Switzerland, which represents the US interests in Iran.

Iran Officially Labels US ‘State Sponsor of Terrorism’

“Through the Swiss ambassador, we sent a straightforward and direct message to the United States that if it goes ahead with its plan, [Iran’s] reciprocal action will be clear and swift, and the US will be directly responsible for any incident that might happen from then on,” he said, recalling that the Swiss ambassador had been summoned to the Foreign Ministry to be notified of Iran’s message to the US.

“The Americans are responsible for many crimes, including the attack on our passenger plane to the developments in Yemen, Syria, Palestine and support for the ISIS [terror group], and CENTCOM (the US Central Command) and forces affiliated to it are involved in all those [crimes] and can be regarded as terrorist elements,” said the top official.

He said Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s letter was in that regard and was confirmed by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC).

“In a statement, the SNSC introduced CENTCOM and forces affiliated to it as terrorist entities. This move can have severe consequences for the region,” Araqchi noted.

“American forces keep coming to and moving across the Persian Gulf, and it is a duty of the IRGC to safeguard the Persian Gulf,” he noted.
