Iran, Pakistan to Form Joint Rapid Reaction Force at Common Borders

The decision was made public at a joint news conference by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan in Tehran.

During the, presser Rouhani said the Islamic Republic and Pakistan are resolute to develop bilateral relations, and that, no third country can influence their ties. He also noted that the two countries are determined to increase the security of their joint borders by launching the Rapid Reaction Force to confront terrorists.

For his part, the Pakistani prime minister underlined that his country will not allow any militant group to operate from its soil.

Imran Khan is on an official two-day visit to Iran. This is his first trip to the Islamic Republic since he came to power last year.

Relations between Iran and Pakistan have soured in recent months, with both countries accusing each other of not doing enough to eradicate militants sheltering across the border. Tehran says militant groups operate from the Pakistani soil and has repeatedly called on Islamabad to clamp down on them.

Tehran has also beefed up security along its long border with Pakistan after a suicide bomber killed nearly 30 members of the IRGC in mid-February. Iranian officials said the attackers were based inside Pakistan.

Pakistani PM Officially Received by Iran President in Tehran

The ceremony took place at the Sa’adabad Palace in northern Tehran. Following the ceremony, the Iranian President and the Pakistani Premier sat down for talks on the expansion of bilateral relations and economic and cultural issues.

The Pakistani prime minister, who arrived in Iran on Sunday, had a brief stop-over in the holy city of Mashhad before leaving for Tehran.

While in Mashhad, Imran Khan met with local officials and paid a visit to the holy shrine of the eighth Shiite Imam.

This is Imran Khan’s first visit to Iran after taking office as Pakistan’s prime minister in 2018.

Imran Khan is accompanied by a high-ranking entourage consisting of several ministers. During his two-day stay, Khan is expected to meet with the leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

US Retreats from Threat to Penalize Any Business with IRGC

The exemptions, granted by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and described by a State Department spokesman in response to questions from Reuters, mean officials from countries such as Iraq who may have dealings with Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps would not necessarily be denied US visas.

The exceptions to US sanctions would also permit foreign executives who do business in Iran as well as humanitarian groups working in regions such as northern Syria, Iraq and Yemen, to do so without fear they will be punished.

However, the US government also created an exception to the carve-out, retaining the right to sanction any individual in a foreign government, company or NGO who themselves provides “material support” to a US-designated foreign terrorist organization (FTO).

On April 8, US President Donald Trump announced that Washington is designating the IRGC a foreign “terrorist organization”, marking the first time the US has formally labeled another country’s military a terrorist group.

Responding to the move, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council immediately declared the US as a state sponsor of terrorism and US forces in the region terrorists.

The SNSC said it has put CENTCOM on its terror list as a “reciprocal measure” against the US “illegal and unwise” move.

The move has caused problems for foreigners who deal with the IRGC, and for US diplomats and military officers in Iraq and Syria, whose interlocutors may work with the IRGC.

It created confusion among US officials who initially had no guidance on how to proceed and on whether they were still allowed to deal with such interlocutors, three US officials said.

American officials have long said they fear the designation could endanger US forces in places such as Syria or Iraq.

US to Announce End of Sanctions Waivers for Iran Oil Imports

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo — the alleged architect of the so-called zero tolerance policy — will make the announcement on Monday, The Washington Post reported Sunday, citing two State Department officials.

The administration of President Donald Trump left a multi-lateral nuclear agreement with Iran last May. Afterwards, Washington re-imposed the sanctions that had been lifted under the accord.

Last November, the US enforced sanctions targeting the Islamic Republic’s banking and energy sector, however, it granted waivers from the bans to eight major importers of the Iranian oil, fearing market instability including China, India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, Italy and Greece.

Now, Pompeo is expected to declare that the State Department will not be exempting the importers of Iranian crude or condensates beyond May 2, which is the deadline for renewing the waivers.

A senior State Department official said Washington was going ahead with the decision “because the conditions to not grant any more SREs have now been met,” pointing to “significant reduction exceptions” — Washington’s term for the waivers.

‘Saudi, UAE offsetting Iran supply’

Officials cited by the daily claimed that this time around, market would avert disruptions as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) had given commitments to increase supply.

Despite the alleged assurances, benchmark Brent crude oil futures rose by as much as 3.2 percent to $74.30 a barrel, the highest since November 1, in early trading on Monday “in reaction to expectations of tightening supply,” Reuters reported. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures climbed as much as 2.9 percent to $65.87 a barrel, its highest since October 30.

Since his inauguration in 2016, Trump has been rallying the two countries, its closest allies in the Persian Gulf region, around an anti-Iran drive. Tehran has warned the region’s countries against falling for the US ploy, saying it threatens to further alienate regional countries and trigger more tensions.

Mastermind of ‘zero tolerance’

A senior official, meanwhile, referred to Pompeo as the person who “originated” the so-called policy of zero tolerance, noting, “He has executed this policy in tight coordination with the president every step of the way.”

Since Trump took office, the US has been leading more antagonistic policies towards Iran under the banner of “maximum pressure.” The US president claims the drive seeks to initiate negotiations leading to a “better” nuclear deal.

The US withdrawal from the historical 2015 accord, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), came despite marathon negotiations leading to the accord’s conclusion, which had been mediated by the European Union.

Both the departure and the reinstatement of sanctions came while the accord has been ratified in the form of a United Nations Security Council resolution.

All the other parties to the JCPOA, namely the UK, France, Russia, China, and Germany have strongly condemned the US actions over its unilateralism and violation of international law.

The US says its envisioned agreement would also be addressing Iran’s regional policies and missile activities. Tehran has strongly warned Washington against trying to interfere in its domestic and political affairs, and has vowed to resolutely pursue its missile program in line with its inalienable right to enhance its defensive prowess.

New Iranian Directors Make Unusual Films: American Critic

Young, a senior film critic at Hollywood Reporter, has long been acquainted with the Iranian cinema and watches Iranian films at various international festivals.

This year, she is among the special guests at the 37th International Fajr Film Festival, which is underway in Tehran.

What follows is a brief interview with Young:

Q: You have always been a supporter of the Iranian cinema. You watch Iranian films at various festivals. What do you think of the Iranian films you watched last year?

A: I think it was a great year. Young filmmakers from the new generation have emerged that I have not been acquainted with before. Your cinema is in a state of transformation. I think great filmmakers like Abbas Kiarostami have opened the way for young people, young filmmakers and new topics. Filmmakers do not repeat the same themes in their films. New young directors make films that are unusual and unconventional, and their works are a bit complicated. But I think they have more modern and up-to-date feelings and expressions.

Q: After Abbas Kiarostami’s death, how do you evaluate the Iranian cinema in recent years? Do you think the Iranian cinema has entered a new phase?

A: The Iranian cinema in its current state is attractive. There is no clear gap between the present and the past few years. In general, film industry has strong roots in Iran. In the new generation of Iranian cinema there is something that I have not seen in other countries.

Q: Who is your favourite actor from the new generation?

A: Navid Mohammadzadeh.

Q: There are a lot of anti-Trump comments in Hollywood, and Trump has many opponents. What do you think?

A: I can say that 90% of Hollywood is anti-Trump. I do not know why. I mean, the cinema is clearly an art form, and it brings all the artistic forms of people with different points of view together. There are people who have an independent outlook and are not looking for money. So there is no connection between these people and Trump.

Iran Celebrates Imam Mahdi’s Birthday Anniversary

The occasion is one of the most important ones among Shiite Muslims, who have a strong devotion to Imam Mahdi (PBUH).

Imam Mahdi (PBUH) was born on the 15th day of the month of Sha’ban on the lunar calendar around 1,200 years ago.

He is known as the Savior among Shiites, who believe he will reappear on earth as per divine decree, establishing peace and ridding the world of injustice, discrimination, and other instances of evil.

Imam Mahdi (PBUH)’s father, Imam Hassan al-Askari, would keep his birth and identity from the tyrants of the time, who had learned about the divine prophesy concerning Imam Mahdi. Their efforts and ill intention, however, failed to either come in the way of the Imam’s birth or harm him afterwards.

Shiite Muslims thus await the Imam’s reemergence, which is expected to transpire on a Friday, with enthusiasm.

To mark the Imam’s birthday, Iranians bedeck the streets, hang lights around villages, towns, and cities, attend festive events at mosques and religious centers, and distribute votive refreshments.

What follows are photos of the celebrations across Iran, including those of the people of Isfahan gifting flowers to foreign tourists on the occasion of Imam Mahdi’s birthday:

Iran Commemorates ‘Most Poetic Day of Year’

It is also the day when Allama Iqbal, the Persian-speaking poet of Pakistan, and Iranian contemporary poets Sohrab Sepehri and Malek o-Sho’ara Bahar passed away.

“April 21 is the Day of Saadi, and the demise anniversary of Sohrab Sepehri, Malek o-Sho’ara Bahar, and Allama Iqbal,” Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyyed Abbas Mousavi said in a Sunday tweet.

“It is the day of Persian-speaking poets, and the most poetic day of the year. May they rest in peace. #Sweet_Persian,”

Iran Commemorates ‘Most Poetic Day of Year’Saadi studied Islamic sciences, law, governance, history, Arabic literature and Islamic theology at the Nizamiyya University in Baghdad and set off for a three-decade journey to foreign lands after the Mongols invaded Iran in the 1220s.

Saadi is best-known for his books Bustan (The Orchard) and Golestan (The Rose Garden) as well as a number of masterly odes portraying human experiences.

Apart from Bustan and Golestan, Saadi also composed a book of love poems (ghazals), as well as a number of odes, quatrains and short pieces in both Persian and Arabic.

Families of Iranian Terror Victims Pen Letter to Pakistani PM

The Habilian Association made the plea in an open letter addressed to Prime Minister Khan on Saturday, on the eve of his planned visit to the Islamic Republic. The Pakistani premier is slated to arrive in Iran on a two-day visit, starting in the holy city of Mashhad.

The letter cited the martyrdom of scores of Iranian border guards at the hands of the terrorists over the past several years.

“Abusing the current situation and the lack of serious border control, terrorist groups enter Iran from time to time, perpetrating sabotage and [acts of] terror before freely returning to the other side,” it read. “These actions have been continually going on for several years, and, unfortunately, no serious action has been taken on the part of Islamabad to prevent them.”

The organization said that the continued captivity of some Iranian security forces at the hands of terrorists inside Pakistan was a testament to how the terror groups were acting freely.

Some 27 Iranian military officers were killed in the most recent terrorist attack in the southwestern Sistan and Baluchistan Province — which borders Pakistan — in February.

Last October, the terrorists kidnapped 12 Iranian forces on the common border, and are still keeping some of them. Another attack took place in April 2017, when 10 Iranian border guards were killed by terrorists.

The so-called Jaish ul-Adl terrorist group, which is based in Pakistan and has links to al-Qaeda, has claimed responsibility for those attacks.

Also on Saturday, Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi told reporters that Pakistan had taken steps to ensure stability along the Iranian border as part of a project dubbed “Border of Peace.”

He said the two countries had started setting up joint border centers while agreeing to synchronize border patrolling exercises and carry out heli-surveillance to prevent incidents like those in the past that have affected security in the region.

The Habilian Association also condoled with Pakistan over the deaths of 14 navy personnel in an attack in a remote area of the country’s southwest.

The association pointed to the fact that both Iran and Pakistan were among the countries losing the highest number of citizens to terrorism.

It said Islamabad needed to decisively confront terrorism if it sought to ensure its own development too.
