Iran is home to 4,400 knowledge-based companies, 364 innovative firms and 80 innovation centres, making it one of the most influential countries in the world in the field of nanotechnology.

The existence of 45 sci-tech parks, 190 development centres, 80 innovation centres and 30 risk funds has turned Iran into a role model for other countries in the region and across the world.

Iran Says None of Oil Tankers Drowned in Sea of Oman

The Front Altair oil tanker, moving Ethanol from Qatar to Taiwan with the flag of Marshal Islands, caught fire at 8:05 local time, 25 miles from Iran’s Jask Port.

A second Panama-flagged tanker Kokuka Corageous, moving Methanol from Saudi Arabia to Singapore, also caught fire at 9:50, 30 miles from Jask.

It was earlier reported that the Front Altair had completely drowned, but now the director of Ports and Maritime Organization of Iran’s Hormozgan province denies that.

The fire in the Panama-flagged vessel has been fully extinguished, and after safety measures, its 21 crew members will return to the vessel, whose cargo is also unharmed.

The Marshal Island-flagged vessel, however, is still on fire, but it has not drowned, the official added.

“All its 23 crew members are now safe and sound in Iran’s Jask port,” he noted.

Shortly after the incident, the Iranian rescue vessel NAJI approached them and managed to rescue the crew members and transfer 44 crew members to Jask.

An informed source at the Iranian Armed Forces had earlier said after receiving call for emergency help from crew members of incident-hit vessels in Sea of Oman, several boats and choppers of Iranian Navy were dispatched to the scene along with rescue forces, and transferred some of the crew to Jask Port.

Neighbours Beware of Plots to Destabilize Region

Reacting to the incidents, Iranian Government Spokesman Ali Rabi’ee expressed Tehran’s deep concern and regret over the explosion of the two Japan-related oil tankers.

“All regional states must be careful not to be trapped by those who benefit from instability in region,” he noted.

“The Iranian government is ready for regional security cooperation to ensure safety in strategic waterways,” he added.

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif also reacted to the incidents, saying, “Reported attacks on Japan-related tankers occurred while PM Abe Shinzo was meeting with Ayatollah Khamenei for extensive and friendly talks.”

“Suspicious doesn’t begin to describe what likely transpired this morning,” he noted.

“Iran’s proposed Regional Dialogue Forum is imperative,” Zarif went on to say, referring to his earlier proposal to Arab countries in the region to establish a forum for discussing regional issues.

Such incidents are against regional and ultra-regional efforts to ease tensions and establish calm in the region,Seyyed Abbas Mousavi said in a Thursday tweet.

“Iran supports cooperation and dialogue in the region,” he added.

His comments came after two oil tankers, carrying Japan-related cargos, caught fire near the Iranian port city of Jask on Thursday morning right at the time when Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was meeting with Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

The Japanese premier was in Tehran to ease tensions between Iran and the US.

The Front Altair oil tanker, moving Ethanol from Qatar to Taiwan, caught fire at 8:05 local time, 25 miles from Iran’s Jask Port.

The second Panama-flagged tanker Kokuka Corageous, moving Methanol from Saudi Arabia to Singapore, caught fire at 9:50, 30 miles from Jask, according to an Iranian official.

Iranian Search and Rescue vessel NAJI later managed to rescue 44 crew members of the two oil tankers, transferring them to the Iranian Island of Jask.

An informed source at the Iranian Armed Forces said after receiving call for emergency help from crew members of incident-hit vessels in Sea of Oman, several boats and choppers of Iranian Navy were dispatched to the scene along with rescue forces, and transferred some of the crew to Jask Port.

Iran to Progress without Sitting for Talks with US: Leader to Abe

“On what you quoted from the US president, I have no answer to Trump’s message. I tell you my words, but I don’t send him any message, because I believe he does not even deserve an exchange of message.,” the Leader told Abe on Thursday.

“Iran’s problem with the US is not whether they seek regime change in Iran; even if it does, it is not capable of implementing it,” the Leader said.

“In the past forty years, US presidents have tried to destroy the Islamic Republic, but to no avail. He [Trump] would have done that if he could. He’s not lying when he says he does not seek regime change in Iran; indeed, he would have sought it if he could, but he can’t,” he added.

The Leader further pointed to Trump’s remarks about what he called Iran’s bid to develop nuclear weapons, and said, “Trump who talks about nuclear weapons has thousands of warheads in his [country’s] warehouses; he is not qualified to say whether another country should have nukes or not; but we are, because we are against nuclear weapons.”

The Leader questioned Trump’s claim that the US is ready for “honest” talks with Iran, saying, “We don’t believe his words at all. Honest talks are not initiated by a person like Trump; honesty is very rare among US officials.”

“We believe none of our problems would be resolved through negotiation with the US. The Americans have shown the utmost hostility they could towards us, and they’re continuing this path. No free nation would accept negotiation under pressure,” he added.

Celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s Birthday at Iranians’ Expense

The email sent by the British Embassy in Tehran called on the Iranian economic players and brands to take part in the birthday celebration after donating between 1000 and 2000 pounds for the celebration in return for enjoying a chance to promote their brands and products in a certain forum designed by the embassy.

British embassies across the world usually rely on British sponsors including figures and firms to provide the budget of the Queen’s birthday celebration but this year, the UK embassy in Tehran has decided to resort to the Iranian sponsors, a report by Fars news agency said.

Through the email, the British ambassador Robert Macaire uses a humiliating and colonial tone, saying that he cannot rely on the British taxpayers anymore for holding the annual ceremony in Tehran and “if the Iranians are interested in taking part in such a ceremony, they should pay the price themselves.”

The email doesn’t refer to the violation of commitments made by the British government under the Iran nuclear deal and the subsequent withdrawal of the British firms from Iran after the US sanctions. The British government has not only pulled out its state-run firms from Iran but also warned the private firms that it wouldn’t provide them with any support against the US punitive measures.

“There is no British firms in Iran anymore to serve as a sponsor for the Queen’s birthday. So, it has resorted to the Iranian sponsors to hold the annual ceremony,” the report said.

According to Fars news agency, there is not yet any precise estimation on the reactions of the Iranian economic players and brands but some reports say most of those who have received the email have already welcomed it. There are also other reports saying that a number of the recipients have strongly rejected the invitation sharing a copy of the invitation with Fars news agency.

The Queen’s Official Birthday is the selected day in some Commonwealth realms on which the birthday of the monarch is officially celebrated in those countries. So the birthday doesn’t necessarily correspond to the date of the monarch’s actual birth.

The date varies as adopted by each country and is generally set around the end of May or start of June, to coincide with a higher probability of fine weather in the Northern Hemisphere for outdoor ceremonies.

In Tehran, the ceremony has been slated for Thursday, June 13, at the British embassy complex in central Tehran.

Iran Leader, Japanese PM Abe Meet in Tehran

The meeting was held during Abe’s two-day visit to Tehran, which is the first of its kind since the 1979 Revolution of Iran.

The Japanese prime minister is visiting Tehran amid heightening tensions between Iran and the US.

Initial reports said that two explosions were heard aboard the tankers and distress calls were received by ports in both Oman and Pakistan.

Bloomberg reported that the oil tanker Front Altair was on fire, a UAE official at the port of Fujairah and a person with knowledge of the matter said vessel had loaded oil from the Abu Dhabi before setting off to sea.

According to Marine Traffic, the Front Altair vessel built in 2016 was operated by Norway and was on its way to Taiwan carrying the flag of Marshal Islands.

Taiwan’s CPC says the vessel was carrying 75,000 tonnes of Naphta for the company when it was hit on Thursday.

The other vessel was also identified as the Panama-flagged Kokuka Courageous.

The Kokuka Courageous was sailing from Qatar’s Ruwais to Singapore with a cargo of Methanol. It has been damaged as a result of the suspected attack, an official said, according to Bloomberg.

Master and crew of the vessel were rescued from a lifeboat by nearby vessel, Reuters said.

Media reports later said that the Front Altair has been completely drowned.

Four shipping and trade sources later announced that the two ships have been evacuated after the incident and the crew are now safe.

Iranian official news agency IRNA later quoted informed sources as saying that 44 sailors and crew members of the two oil tankers targeted in Sea of Oman have been rescued by Iran’s navy and are now on the Iranian Island of Jask.

It wasn’t immediately clear what the cause of the fire was. The “UK and its partners are currently investigating,” UK Maritime Trade Operations said on its website.

Benchmark Brent crude futures gained as much as 1.8% and were trading at $60.99 a barrel at 10:21 a.m. in Dubai.

The explosions came a few weeks after four other oil tankers were targeted off the port city of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates, in what Emirati officials described as a “sabotage” attack.

Iran, Serbia Discuss Closer Ties on All Fronts

In the Wednesday meeting, Sarmadi discussed bilateral issues as well as regional and international developments with Žarko Obradović, the chairman of the Serbian National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs Committee, as well as several other Serbian lawmakers accompanying him.

Obradović, who is also head of the Iran-Serbia Parliamentary Friendship Group, underlined Iran’s key status in West Asia as well as the promotion of bilateral relations in recent years.

He said Serbia is interested in boosting all-out ties with Iran on all political and parliamentary fronts. He also underscored the need to enhance mutual economic and trade cooperation.

He welcomed Tehran-Belgrade cooperation in international circles and invited Iran to take part in an Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting slated to be held in Serbia this autumn. He called on Iran to actively participate in the event.

The Iranian official, in turn, touched upon age-old relations as well as the expansion of political and parliamentary consultations between the two sides in recent years. He underscored the necessity of upgrading mutual cooperation in economic and commercial domains while expressing Tehran’s readiness to remove trade barriers and boost trade ties.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Sarmadi said the policy of unilateralism in international relations amounts to a serious threat on the international stage. He called on independent and freedom-seeking countries to further enhance their unity and solidarity to counter this dangerous policy, which has jeopardized international peace and security.
