Terrorists Kill 3 IRGC Forces in Northwest Iran

IRGC logo

The IRGC said in a statement that a vehicle carrying the forces of Hamzeh Sayyid al-Shohada Headquarters was attacked by the terrorists affiliated with the “global arrogance” in the northwestern province of West Azarbaijan on Tuesday evening.

The troops were taking part in a mission when the terrorists attacked their vehicle at the entrance of Piranshahr, the IRGC added, naming the martyrs as Hasel Ahmadi, Sattar Pirooti, and Omid Mollazadeh.

A manhunt is in progress to capture the fugitive assailants, the statement noted.

Last week, two local forces of the IRGC were killed in an exchange of fire with a team of terrorists in the same province.

In that clash, which took place in Chaldoran region, the security forces dismantled the terrorist cell and confiscated a remarkable amount of weapons, equipment, ammunition and communication systems from terrorists.

The IRGC is in charge of border security in Iran’s northwestern and southeastern regions.

Iran Says Good Measures Adopted to Release Zakzaky

Morteza Rahimi said Iran’s embassy in Nigeria have already made arrangements with Nigerian officials and held constructive talks with various sides in the African country to pave the way for the release of Sheikh Zakzaky.

“After arrangements made with the Nigerian government, a medical team was sent to examine health conditions of Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife in jail,” he said, saying that Tehran warmly welcomed the move.

“The medical team has reportedly submitted a report on his health conditions so as to be developed by his lawyers for giving to the court,” he added.

According to Rahimi, the lawyers and family members of Sheikh Zakzaky are anxiously waiting for his trial so that they can take further legal steps for his release and treatment outside the country.

“We hope the legal procedures will be over soon,” he said.

The Iranian ambassador finally thanked organizations in Iran which are seriously following up the fate of Sheikh Zakzaky.

Sheikh Zakzaky, who is in his mid-sixties, lost his left eyesight in a 2015 raid by security forces that left more than 300 of his followers and three of his sons dead.

During the raid, his wife also sustained serious wounds. Sheikh Zakzaky has been held in detention since December 2015 despite a high court ruling.

He was charged in April with murder, culpable homicide, unlawful assembly, disruption of public peace and other accusations. He has pleaded not guilty.

No Regional Security Unless Iran’s Interests Met: Putin’s Envoy

Alexander Lavrentiev made the remarks on Tuesday in a meeting with the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, Ali Shamkhani, in Tehran.

“As far as other parties fail to live up to their JCPOA pledges, we can’t expect Iran to remain committed unilaterally and without benefiting from its legal rights under the nuclear accord,” he said.

For his part, Shamkhani referred to the constructive and growing development of mutual ties between Iran and Russia as two friendly countries and strategic partners and said Iran praises the fair and resolute stances of Russia towards issues like the JCPOA, the US drone’s violation of Iran’s airspaces, Iran’s legal presence in Syria and the UK’s seizure of a tanker with Iranian oil.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed bilateral and regional issues.

Levrentiev is on an official visit to Iran at the direct order of the Russian president to brief Iranian officials on the latest trilateral meeting between Russian, American and Israeli security officials.

During the Tuesday talks, the two sides highlighted the sensitive and complicated situation of the region, and discussed a wide range of regional issues as well as the latest developments in Lebanon.

Iran to Take 3rd Nuclear Step in September, Zarif Warns EU

In a letter to EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini, Zarif underlined that Iran has already gone beyond the 3.67-percent level of uranium enrichment, set in the Iran nuclear deal.

Iran will live up to its JCPOA commitments only as far as the other sides particularly the US remain committed, he added.

Zarif also said if the remaining sides of the JCPOA don’t live up to their commitments within the next 60 days, Iran will take the third step of reducing its commitments as of September.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed that Iran has already increased its uranium enrichment level beyond 3.67 percent. The measure was adopted on Sunday after Iran took the second step of reducing its commitments in response to the passive approach of the remaining sides of the JCPOA.

The move has already sparked reactions from the US and the EU. The Europeans have expressed concerns over Iran’s move and called on the country to stick to its commitments.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Abbas Araqchi said the move was made in line with the JCPOA and its paragraph 36.

“We view the JCPOA as a significant document and want to preserve it but it goes without saying that our demands should be met and the commitments reduction comes due to the other sides’ failure to meet our demands,” he said.

Meanwhile, in a tweet on Sunday, Zarif said, “Iran is committed to the full implementation of the #JCPOA: as long as E3/EU implement THEIR economic commitments. So moving forward, Iran will comply with its commitments under the JCPOA in exactly the same manner as the EU/E3 have—and will—comply with theirs. Fair enough?”

After the US unilateral withdrawal from the deal back in May 2018, Iran waited for the compensatory measures of the remaining sides of the JCPOA but one year on, no tangible measures have been adopted by them so far.

Iran Not to Lose Any War on Ground: IRGC Chief

In an address to a meeting of military commanders in Iran’s northeastern city of Mashhad, Major General Salami said the IRGC has developed its capabilities in various fields.

Thanks to the presence of the IRGC Ground Force and other Iranian Armed Forces that protect the Islamic Revolution and the borders, Iran will never lose a war on the ground, he underlined.

Pointing to the diverse strategies the enemies employ to harm Iran, the general said the Islamic Republic is engaged in a full-fledged war with the enemy in multiple arenas.

The strength of enemies has been sapped and they cannot regain it, the IRGC chief said, stressing that Iran, conversely, has diversified its options and is refreshing its capabilities constantly.

“The IRGC Ground Force is a strategic force for the Islamic Republic of Iran’s establishment which has grown and made progress in all dimensions,” the commander concluded.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei has on various occasions reiterated the need for boosting Iran’s military capabilities and defense preparedness.

In November 2018, Ayatollah Khamenei said that Iran’s enhanced military preparedness would frighten the foes and be deterrent against the enemies, underlining, “The Islamic Republic does not intend to begin a war against anyone, but you (the Iranian military forces) should boost your capabilities in such a way that not only the enemy would be fearful and afraid of attacking Iran, but also thanks to the solidarity, might, and effective presence of the Armed Forces, the specter of threats against the Iranian nation would be swept away.”

Iran, Japan Hold Legal Consultations in Tokyo

Bilateral statutory consultations were held between Iranian and Japanese delegations led by director-generals for legal-international affairs at the two countries’ respective foreign ministries.

During the course of the talks, the two sides stressed both governments’ determination to further enhance reciprocal ties on all fronts. They said Tehran and Tokyo welcome the promotion of mutual cooperation as well as constructive and fruitful negotiations on key issues related to international law plus issues of mutual concern.

The legal delegations of both countries also exchanged views on ways of boosting mutual understanding and legal cooperation in regional and international circles.

The two sides also underscored the necessity of pressing ahead with statutory consultations between the two countries and agreed the second round of the consultations be held in Tehran next year.

‘EU Deprives Iran of Technology to Reduce Air Pollution’

Undated photo of air pollution in Tehran by Mohammad Babaei

Issa Kalantari made the comment in a meeting with French Ambassador to Tehran Philippe Thiebaud, criticizing the environmental restrictions imposed on Iran by European countries.

“The EU conforms to the sanctions more [strictly] than Trump does. The reason is that the environment was not on the list of US sanctions, but the EU even took environmental facilities from Iran,” said Kalantari, who is also a vice-president of Iran.

Due to the sanctions that Washington has slapped on Iran’s oil sales, said the vice-president, EU officials did not agree to share with Iran technologies that reduce air pollution during their trip to Tehran last week, which has led to an increase in ozone levels.

In their meeting, Kalantari and Thiebaud also discussed mutual cooperation. They also exchanged views on the general environmental situation in Iran, the Paris Agreement and ways of tackling climate change.

In the meeting, the Iranian official touched upon a climate change conference in Chile which is to be focused on the Paris Agreement.

Iran among First Victims of Climate Change

“Global determination is needed to tackle climate change,” Kalantari said.

“When the US and some CO2-producing countries stand on the sidelines, smaller countries cannot do anything,” he noted.

“Our country has lost 20% of its rainfall over the past 10 years due to climate change. In fact, rainfall has decreased and it has become hotter, which increases the need for water and that is why we are faced with water shortage,” he said.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is among the first victims of climate change,” said Kalantari.

He said sanctions can cause “water tension, food tension, spread of dust and air pollution.”

Kalantari added sanctions have stopped Iran’s environmental cooperation with other countries.

‘EU Deprives Iran of Technology to Reduce Air Pollution’“If French auto makers hadn’t stopped their cooperation [with Iran], we would have engines with the Euro-5 standard, and our fuel consumption would drop from 85 million litres per day to 60 million,” he said.

He said if sanctions were no in place, CO2 emissions in Iran would drop by 12 percent.

The top French ambassador, in turn, noted he agreed with what Kalantari said.

He also criticized Washington’s behaviour, saying, “We have deep divisions with the Americans.”

He condemned the United States’ withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal. He said France, Germany and the UK are gravely concerned over Iran sanctions, and added European companies cannot do anything special due to these sanctions.

At the end of the meeting, the two sides underlined the need to follow up on efforts to help settle national and global environmental issues.
