Iran Says Holding Negotiation with Promise Breakers ‘Absurd’

Speaking at a meeting with the chairman and members of the parliament’s Economic Commission in Tehran on Wednesday, Shamkhani hailed the valuable achievements of Iran’s strategy of resistance, highlighting the ineffectiveness of US sanctions and its suggestions for “unconditional” talks with the Islamic Republic.

“Today, the enemy is well aware of its inability and failure to enforce its pressure-negotiation policy and (the fact that) there is no other way than to fully fulfill its obligations and to ensure the rights of the Iranian nation…,” he said.

The Iranian top security official further described negotiation with someone who does not comply with any of his obligations, as “absurdity and a sign of weakness and frustration”.

“Today, with the resistance of the Iranian people, our enemies have come to the conclusion that one cannot force the Iranian nation to accept humiliation…,” Shamkhani stated.

The remarks came against the backdrop of increased tensions between Iran and the US with Washington imposing new sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

The US has ratcheted up pressure on Iran since last year after unilaterally withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Since then, the administration of US President Donald Trump is trying to reduce Iran’s oil exports to “zero,” and has sent an aircraft carrier strike group, a bomber squad, an amphibious assault ship, and a Patriot missile battery to the Middle East to try to stack up pressure on Tehran.

Iranian officials, however, have dismissed such moves as psychological warfare, saying the country has its own ways of circumventing the American bans and selling crude oil.

Iran President Says Ready for ‘Just, Honest’ Negotiations

“We will never miss the chance of negotiation. I declare that as long as I’m responsible for the executive duties of the country, we are always ready for just and legal negotiations where the Iranian nation and its rights are fully respected, in order to solve the problems,” Rouhani said on Wednesday.

“But at the same time we are not ready to sit at the table of surrender under the name of negotiations. We fully understand what negotiation means, what surrender means,” he added.

“Surrender is not acceptable to us, to our nation, and to our Constitution. But we have always been, and we are now, ready for just and respectful negotiations that lead to a fair result.”

“We have talks and negotiations with European and non-European countries through letters and phone conversations. We haven’t reached a desirable point yet. They have offered to lift some of the sanctions in exchange for some actions on our part. We haven’t accepted them so far because they have not been balanced offers,” Rouhani went on to say.

His comments came amid growing tensions between Iran and the West, particularly after the IRGC’s recent shoot-down of an intrusive US drone in the Persian Gulf, and its seizure of a British-flagged oil tanker, which came a month after a similar move by the UK against an Iranian supertanker in Gibraltar.

In his Wednesday remarks, Rouhani said if the UK stops its illegal move to keep the Iranian tanker in Gibraltar, “they will receive an appropriate response from Iran.”

He also warned that the Strait of Hormuz is no place for joke or playing with international regulations.

Rouhani said the IRGC’s seizure of the UK oil tanker was a professional and precise move, and the world must be grateful to the IRGC for ensuring the security of the Persian Gulf.

Iran confiscated the UK oil tanker Stena Impero on Friday night for breaching international maritime regulations while passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

The tanker was transferred to the port of Iran’s southern city of Bandar Abbas for maritime casualty investigation.

In a statement on Wednesday, Mousavi said the “unacceptable” comments threaten international peace and security.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran stands by the resilient nation, the government, and the educated people of the brotherly and neighbouring country of Afghanistan,” Mousavi added.

Speaking in a joint press briefing at the White House with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan, Trump said the US military could quickly end a war in Afghanistan.

“If we wanted to fight a war in Afghanistan and win it, I could win that war in a week. I just don’t want to kill 10 million people,” he said.

Trump also referred to the use of the so-called “Mother of All Bombs” in Afghanistan in April 2017, which was the largest non-nuclear bomb ever detonated, and said using more would be an “easy solution”.

“They were going to make many of them. And I said, “No, we don’t have to. I don’t want to drop that. I don’t want to do that’,” Trump said.

“So many easy solutions. That’s actually the easy solution. And they’d come in and they’d say, ‘Let’s have peace.’ But you don’t have to do that.”

He further said although the process to initiate the Instrument in Support of Trade Exchange (INSTEX) has been a long one, it is considered a key political step to put the mechanism into operation.

Araqchi, in turn, elaborated on the latest situation of Iran’s nuclear issue and the trend of Tehran scaling back its commitments under the JCPOA.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has put on its agenda the scaling back of its obligations under the JCPOA in accordance with its rights stipulated in the agreement, and diplomatic channels remain open,” said Iran’s envoy.

He thanked efforts and initiatives by France, especially by Macron, and said he would submit President Rouhani’s message to his opposite number during his stay.

He further described security in the Persian Gulf as very important.

“Iran will try its utmost to ensure security in this region, especially in the Strait of Hormuz, and will not allow any disruption in the trend of shipping in this sensitive region,” said Araqchi.

He also referred to Washington’s economic war against Iranian people.

“By imposing its illegal and unjust sanctions, the United States has targeted all Iranian people.” said the Iranian emissary.

“Europe is expected to adopt a clear stance on opposing the United States’ policy of seeking to bring Iran’s oil sales to zero, which is part of the ‘maximum pressure’ strategy,” he noted.

He reiterated that Iran will continue to export its petroleum under any circumstances.

Iran Signs Deal to Establish Nanotechnology Lab in Bolivia

The document was signed by visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Bolivian counterpart Diego Pary.

The MoU is aimed at launching courses in the field of modern technologies, including nanotechnology, in Bolivia’s EMI university.

Under the agreement, Iran undertook to sign a deal on establishing Master’s degree and PhD degree programs as well as a specialized nanotechnology laboratory at EMI within the framework of the South-South Cooperation initiative.

Three Questions PM Johnson Should Answer on Iran

In a message on his Twitter account, Reza Nasri posed a couple of questions for new British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

“UK has seized an Iranian tanker invoking an EU law. This means UK apparently believes that EU laws -or EU “domestic” legislation- supplant international law, namely on the Freedom of navigation. What does Boris Johnson -a fervent Brexit campaigner- think of this argument?” he asked.

“In line with the argument invoked to seize Grace I, would UK government recognize Iran’s right to adopt a similar “domestic” legislation allowing its armed forces to regulate and physically impede the entry of certain goods to Saudi Arabia for the latter’s war crimes in Yemen?” the expert added.

“If not, on what ground would the UK Prime Minister NOT recognize such right for Iran?” concluded Nasri, who writes opinion pieces about international law, foreign policy, security, and the Iran nuclear deal.

The Geneva-based expert has posed the questions hours after Johnson was elected leader of the Conservative party to succeed Theresa May as the UK premier.

In a tweet on Tuesday, Foreign Minister of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif congratulated his former counterpart on winning the race to become the next UK prime minster, and denounced the outgoing British premier’s government for seizing Iran’s supertanker Grace 1 in the international waters off the coasts of Gibraltar.

“The May govt’s seizure of Iranian oil at behest of US is piracy, pure & simple,” Zarif said.

On July 4, the British Royal Marines seized Iran’s oil tanker Grace 1 in Gibraltar on charge of trying to take oil to Syria allegedly in violation of the EU sanctions.

Tehran has made it clear that the supertanker was not bound for Syria and its seizure has taken place at the behest of the US.

Two weeks later, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy captured British oil tanker “Stena Impero” for violating international maritime laws when crossing the high-traffic Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf on July 19.

The UK vessel had switched off its GPS locator, in contravention of international regulations, and was sailing into the Strait of Hormuz in a wrong traffic pattern.

The British tanker was entering the strait from the southern route which is an exit path, increasing the risk of an accident.

Analysts believe that Iran has exercised its legitimate right to act in retaliation for the UK act of piracy.
