Tehran to Sue Washington over Violation of JCPOA

Laya Joneydi said the legal department of the government has called on the country’s macroeconomic departments to assess the damages caused by the JCPOA violations to take legal action against the US and remedy it.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has raised the issue of the US’ re-imposition of cruel sanctions despite an agreement before the International Court of Justice in The Hague and an interim order was issued in favour of Iran,” she told ICANA.

“According to the legal department of the government, Tehran is seeking compensation for damages; therefore, we are working to document all the damages and provide the conditions for compensation.”

US President Donald Trump withdrew from the nuclear accord in May 2018 and re-imposed the sanctions that had been lifted under the nuclear deal. He also ordered new sanctions. In May, he introduced a total ban on Iran’s oil exports.

On the first anniversary of the US withdrawal from the deal, Tehran started the reduction of its commitments based on Articles 26 and 36 of the JCPOA, and set a deadline for Europeans to make up for the US breaches.

Tehran says it cannot remain committed while the other parties fail to stick to their commitments under the agreement.

US Maximum Pressure on Iran Ends in Failure: VP

COVID-19 Punishes Those Who Sanctioned Iran’s Oil: First VP

In comments at the inauguration of a water supply project in Birjand on Monday, Jahangiri highlighted the failure of US attempts to maximize pressures on Iran by imposing cruel sanctions.

“The Americans thought that the pressures would push the country’s economy and the Islamic Republic’s establishment towards dissolution, but today, we announce proudly that the plot of Americans has ended in failure,” the vice president added, hailing the Iranian people and government’s endeavors.

He also noted that the administration would carry out major projects in various sectors, such as the oil industry, agriculture, energy, metal industry and mines, as well as road construction and urban development, in order to address the economic woes and improve the livelihood of people.

In remarks last week, Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei highlighted the defeat of the US policy of maximum pressure on Iran, saying the Americans had plans to bring Iran to its knees by maximizing the economic pressures, but they ran into trouble themselves.

“The (US policy of) maximum pressure has failed up to this moment, and I announce firmly that they (Americans) will fail in their attempt for such maximum pressure forever,” Ayatollah Khamenei underlined.

Zarif Objects to Turkish Military Action in Syria

In a telephone conversation on Monday night, Zarif and his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu discussed the latest developments in northeastern Syria.

In the phone call, Cavusoglu emphasized the need to respect Syria’s territorial integrity, saying Turkey’s operation in northern parts of Syria would be temporary.

In turn, Foreign Minister Zarif voiced opposition to military action and urged respect for Syria’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty.

The top Iranian diplomat also stressed the need for the fight against terrorism and for the establishment of stability and security in Syria, describing the Adana agreement as the best approach for Syria and Turkey and for addressing their concerns.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that Turkey’s Army was ready to launch operations against Kurdish fighters in Syria at any moment following the US announcement.

Iran Condemns US Congressional Bill on Hong Kong

In a statement on Monday, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Seyyed Abbas Mousavi denounced the “cheeky” bill the US Congress’ committee on foreign affairs has approved on democracy and human rights in Hong Kong.

“This was not the first move by the US’ regime and its Congress in such cases. The Islamic Republic of Iran deems such measures a clear example of interference in the internal affairs of the (other) countries and condemns it,” he deplored.

“The international law strongly prohibits meddling in the internal affairs of countries. Sadly, the repetition of such conduct by the US regime has turned into an instrument for destabilizing the countries,” Mousavi added.

“The right to protest is a right of citizens that could be exercised without any foreign meddling and within the framework of law and public order,” the spokesperson concluded.

China’s Foreign Ministry has already sent a note of protest to the US following approval of the congressional bill, urging the American lawmakers to immediately drop it.

The US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations approved the legislation on human rights and democracy in Hong Kong on September 25. The document will require that US president annually provide assessments on situation in Hong Kong to the Congress, as well as introduce sanctions against people the White House deems responsible for violating rights of activists in this special administrative region of China.

Arbaeen Pilgrimage Unaffected by Events in Iraq: Spokesman

In an interview with IRIB on Monday, Seyyed Abbas Mousavi said the Iraqi government and nation will weather the current situation and resolve their internal problems through unity and cooperation.

“The Iraqi government and nation have a rich history, are mature and grown-up, and have gone through many crises in this period, either under the American occupation or afterwards,” the Iranian spokesman added.

Hailing Iraqis for their success to deal with the previous crises with wisdom and consensus among the political and religious figures, Mousavi advised the opportunistic parties not to pin hopes on the recent unrest in Iraq.

“It is an internal issue of Iraq, and will be settled soon by the Iraqi government and nation and by all groups, all individuals, characters, religious figures and Marja’s and influential people inside Iraq itself,” he noted.

Mousavi further said this year’s Arbaeen processions and mourning ceremonies “will held more magnificently than the previous years”, regardless of the recent developments in Iraq.

The spokesman underlined that the Shiite Muslims from Iran, Iraq, and all parts of the world are going to join the mass gathering of lovers of Imam Hussein (PBUH) in this year’s Arbaeen season.

On Saturday, commander of the Iranian Police said the number of Iranian pilgrims traveling to Iraq for Arbaeen has risen by 80 percent compared to the previous year.

Arbaeen, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shiite Imam.

Russian Journalist Detained for Visa Violation: Iran

Speaking in a press conference on Monday, Rabiei said Yulia Yuzik’s case was undergoing a “quick review” by the Iranian authorities.

“Her case was a matter of visa violation and it was not related to espionage … Yuzik’s case is under quick review by Iranian authorities,” said Rabiei.

Iran had earlier announced that it would soon release the Russian journalist.

“Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov summoned Iranian Ambassador to Moscow Sanaei to the Russian Foreign Ministry on October 4 to demand clarification on the circumstances for the detention of Russian citizen Yuzik in Tehran. Sanaei confirmed that Yuzik had been detained by law enforcement agencies to give explanations on a number of issues, and will soon be released,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry had summoned the Iranian ambassador on Friday over Yuzik’s detention and the Kremlin said on Monday it hoped Yuzik would be released soon.

“We view negatively detentions of Russian journalists and consider them unacceptable. We hope that in the very near future she will be released and the Russian side will get the necessary explanations,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

In a brief phone conversation with her mother late on Thursday, Yuzik claimed security forces had broken into her hotel room and detained her on suspicion of having ties to Israeli intelligence services, her ex-husband Boris Voitsekhovsky said.

Voitsekhovsky said Yuzik did not hold joint Israeli citizenship or a visa for the regime and last visited Israel about 15 or 17 years ago to report on the Israeli army’s daily life for Russia’s “Komsomolskaya Pravda” newspaper.

‘Poisonous Propaganda’ Not to Split Iran, Iraq: Spokesman

Ali Rabiei told reporters in Tehran Monday that Iran stands in solidarity with Iraq in the wake of the ongoing unrest in the Arab country which prepares to host millions of Muslims for Arba’een processions.

“Over the past few days and while the Iraqi government and nation are preparing to host the world’s biggest cultural and religious event and the region is moving towards peace and stability, we have witnessed disturbing incidents during which some people have lost their lives,” Rabiei said.

The violence, which began last Tuesday, has so far killed more than 100 people and injured over 6,000 others.

Noting that Iran wants prosperity for every nation in the region, Rabiei called on all sides to exercise restraint.

He said violence is not the way and all parties involved in the current situation should help find a “democratic” solution to the issue.

“The Iraqi people should pursue their demands but at the same time keep an eye out for malevolent forces that look to exploit the protests and not let them to” achieve their goals, the spokesman said.

Rabiei also said the best way to overcome the current situation is to follow the religious leadership.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran, as always, expresses readiness to stand next to the Iraqi brothers and sisters and help them,” he said. “No ill-intended, fake propaganda can break the Iraqi and Iranian nations apart.”

Key border crossing reopened

On Monday, it was announced that the Khosravi border crossing between Iran and Iraq has been reopened and is ready to receive millions of pilgrims for the Arbaeen processions in the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala.

The crossing, which was reopened for the first time in years only weeks ago, was shuttered last week upon a request by Iraqi officials amid security concerns.

Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, coordinating deputy of the Islamic Republic of Iran Army, said all crossings to Iraq are fully secure and ready to accommodate pilgrims who are headed to Iraq to mark the 40th day after the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), the third Shia Imam.

He told reporters that Iran’s armed forces maintain the highest levels of readiness at the border and that pilgrims will be provided with all services as before.

Iran Develops Rust Remover Using Nanotechnology

The rust converter can be used to remove rust and corrosion in ship-building as well as oil, gas and petrochemical industries.

“Corrosion is very important in such industries as air industries, ship-building, and oil, gas and petrochemical industries, and if enough attention is not paid to it, it can cause irreparable damage and dangers from economic, energy consumption and environmental perspectives,” says the sales manager of a knowledge-based company which produces the rust-removing material using nanotechnology.

“In some industries, there are sensitive parts whose rust cannot be removed with conventional methods such as washing with acid and sandblasting (also known as abrasive blasting.)  So, we decided to produce a product called rust converter to solve this problem,” he noted.

He said the rust converter, which is resistant to humidity, forms a layer on the metal surface and makes it resistant to being rusted again. The product not only prevents the corrosion from increasing, but also changes rust to a water-proof layer of paint, making the metal several times more resistant to corrosion.

He says no preparation is required in order to use this coating, and that no special treatment is needed to be applied to the surface beforehand.

All you have to do is to remove the oil and patches of rust and corrosion from the surface with a brush or spatula, he says.
