Leader Hails Coronavirus Screening Scheme in Iran

Ayatollah Khamenei on Sunday sent a letter to Iranian Health Minister Saeid Namaki to once again express gratitude to the minister, his colleagues and the entire health and medical system in Iran for their efforts to contain the coronavirus epidemic.

“The screening scheme is a great job,” the Leader said in the letter, noting that employing the assistance of the Basij forces and voluntary popular forces will greatly help the country get rid of the contagious disease.

“It is important not to let the pace of all-out efforts decrease,” Ayatollah Khamenei underlined.

The Leader had earlier advised the whole Iranian organizations to work in close cooperation with the Health Ministry in the fight against the novel coronavirus epidemic.

Iran’s death toll from the COVID-19 rose to 2,640 on Sunday, while the total number of infected cases exceeded 38,300.

Iran’s Health Ministry says about 60 million Iranians have been screened by health centres and 97.3 percent of them are happy with the results of the plan.

Iran Trying to Evacuate Students from Corona-Hit Italy

Mousavi

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyyed Abbas Mousavi announced on Sunday that considering the high intensity of coronavirus epidemic in Italy, tens of Iranian university students in the European nation want to return home.

Mousavi said the requests are being seriously considered by Tehran and Rome, and the necessary measures to bring those students back from Italy will be taken as soon as the necessary permission is obtained, given the emergency situation in that country.

The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be pursuing the issue through the Coronavirus Fight National Headquarters, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Embassy in Rome, and the government of Italy until the achievement of results, he added.

In Italy, 10,779 people have died since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. The European country has recorded the most deaths and confirmed nearly 97,500 cases.

Kal Namak River; Gorgeous Landscape in Tabas Desert

The salt of this river has no edible, traditional, or industrial uses, but it has given the area a beauty that can turn into a tourist attraction.

As you go from Tabas and approach Mohammadabad County, you step into a region beautified in a white dress of salt crystals. Arranged strikingly next to each other, the crystals draw the attention of nature-lovers.

In Persian, the word Kal refers to a valley or a path of water streams, and Namak means Salt.

The permanent Salt River of Tabas has built up a salt mine on the edge of the seasonal lake of Tabas.

The natural salt here was used by the old people before iodised and packaged salt was invented.

Extreme salt concentration in seasonal rivers and high evaporation in deserts are combined to create such a scene.

Formation of huge and little crystals of salt depends on the pace of evaporation. The slower the evaporation, the huger the crystals.

Whatever you witness in this region goes back to the fourth geologic period.
The best time to travel to this region is in cold seasons. The visitors must make sure to check weather conditions because they might not have a chance to visit the place if it’s showery.

The Salt River blows minds of every visitor.

It’s a unique experience which might not ever happen again.

COVID-19 Here to Stay as No Treatment Developed Yet: Iran President

Hassan Rouhani said the virus lingers on, but all should join hands to keep fighting the disease.

“The virus may stay there for another one or two years, but we should make the situation in the society tolerable for confronting the virus, which will weaken gradually,” he said at a Cabinet meeting Sunday.

The president noted there is consensus among authorities that the coronavirus cannot be expected to vanish in a short period of time.

“This virus has penetrated the society and is here to stay,” he said, and underlined efforts should be made to keep the outbreak from reaching a peak in a certain city or province and overwhelm the health system.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the president touched upon his consultations with experts and authorities about the COVID-19 epidemic.

“I asked them (experts and officials) where we stand in the coronavirus issue in Iran,” “Have we passed the peak, are we moving toward better conditions, or what?”
“Folks answered that we have passed the peak and have a downward trend in certain provinces,” Rouhani noted.

“But we cannot speak about some provinces with certainty,” President Rouhani quoted authorities as saying.

“Some said we have to wait until the end of the New Year holidays and then make a judgement,” he added.

Over 93,000 Iranian Inmates on Furlough amid COVID-19 Outbreak

In comments on Saturday, Asghar Jahangir said more than 93,000 inmates have gotten furlough.

Jahangir added that all inmates on leave will receive post-furlough care services.

In late February, Judiciary Chief Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi ordered the courts across the country to grant the eligible prisoners leave for the new Iranian year’s holidays until April 3, also as a precautionary measure to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus epidemic.

A few days ago, President Hassan Rouhani announced that the furloughs will be extended until end of the Iranian month of Farvardin, April 19.

Iran’s death toll from COVID-19 has increased to 2,517, with 139 new deaths confirmed only in the past 24 hours.

Iranian Scientist Denies Developing COVID-19 Drug

Soleimani said the reports quoting him as saying that the Corona medicine was developed and its initial test was positive is not true.

Soleimani, who is a hematology and stem cells researcher, explained that he and his research team are using mesenchymal stem cells to modify the immune response in corona patients.

“I emphasise that this is a research-therapeutic approach,” Soleimani told Mehr News Agency.

The research is being conducted with the support of the health ministry at Shariati and Masih Daneshvari hospitals, he said.
The results of the first phase of its clinical trial will be announced soon by the health ministry, added Soleimani.

In separate comments, the spokesman for Iran’s health ministry also asserted it is not a drug, but a stem cell therapy.

Kianoush Jahanpour underlined this method is a type of cell therapy that is still in the study phase.

“The results of the first phase of its clinical trial will be announced shortly, and the health ministry will announce the next steps,” he underscored.

Earlier, Fars News Agency has quoted Soleimani as claiming that he has developed the medicine for coronavirus.

Iranian University Claims Its Antiviral Drug Treats COVID-19 Patients

Chancellor of Abadan School of Medical Sciences Shokrollah Salmanzadeh says the study of the effect of an antiviral drug on critically ill patients with COVID-19 has shown success in treating these patients and decreasing the length of hospitalisation.

Sara Mobarak, Head of the Abadan Infectious Diseases Research Group, says since the outbreak of the coronavirus in the country, a research team decided to use drugs that help treat the patient’s clinical symptoms.

“After hospitalisation of patients with corona at Taleqani Hospital in Abadan, our research team decided to implement a regimen next to the nationwide standard regimen on patients after obtaining the necessary permits from the health ministry,” added the Vice Chancellor for Education at Abadan University of Medical Sciences.

The early results of this regimen were very promising in the early days, and we achieved very stunning results compared to the national protocol regimen in terms of mortality rate and hospitalisation days, she went on to say.

Comparing the two groups, the mortality rate in the second group decreased to zero and the days of hospitalisation reduced.

“What was very important was that the people in the intensive care unit, who received artificial respiration, returned to normal breathing after four days and were discharged from hospital.”

She noted that for one month the drug had stunning results on 60 patients with COVID-19.

“We hope that by using this regimen and incorporating it into national protocols, we can take a major step forward in reducing hospitalisation period and ultimately lowering the death rate,” underlined Mobarak.

During a two-week follow-up period after receiving this treatment, the patients improved and were discharged from hospital, stated Mobarak.
