Extension of 20-Year Deal with Russia on Iran’s Agenda

Asked by reporters upon his arrival in Moscow on Tuesday about any plans to extend a cooperation agreement with Russia as March 2021 will mark the 20th anniversary of the deal between the two countries, Foreign Minister Zarif said, “Extension of the contract is on our agenda.”

“If the Russian friends are ready for another long-term contract, it could be discussed,” he noted.

“But the extension of the contract (with Russia) is definitely on our agenda,” Zarif added.

The top Iranian diplomat also said he has visited Moscow following the recent talks between Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

“The relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Russian Federation are strategic,” he stressed, noting, “In the current circumstances when major developments are taking place at the international level, it is necessary to hold such negotiations constantly between us and the Russian government, and also the other friends of ours, like the Chinese government.”

Foreign Minister Zarif finally noted that his trip would include talks on Tehran-Moscow bilateral relations, the regional issues, and the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Accompanied by Deputy Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araqchi, Zarif has travelled to Moscow for talks with the Russian officials, including his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.

Iran President Officially Welcomes Iraqi PM in Tehran

Following the welcoming ceremony held on Tuesday, the two leaders started their bilateral talks on further strengthening of mutual cooperation in various political, economic, and cultural areas.

The high-ranking Iranian and Iraqi delegations also discuss the most important regional and international issues.

In his first foreign trip since taking office, PM Al-Kadhimi is being accompanied by Iraqi ministers of foreign affairs, oil, electricity, finance, defence, health, and his national security advisor.

Upon arrival at Mehrabad Airport, the Iraqi prime minister was welcomed by Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian.

During his stay in Tehran, the Iraqi prime minister will also meet with Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf.

Iran Welcomes Iraq's Efforts to Mediate between Tehran, Riyadh

Speaking at a weekly press conference on Tuesday, Ali Rabiei said one of the government’s main priorities is to work in cooperation and expand relations with the neighbours in all fields.

He pointed to Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi’s ongoing trip to Tehran, expressing hope that the two sides would hold effectual dialogue with the purpose of deepening Tehran-Baghdad ties.

The Iraqi prime minister’s visit to Tehran is in line with the plans for the promotion of Iran-Iraq relations, the spokesman noted, adding that the main issues to be discussed in the meetings would include the fight against terrorism, the common environmental issues, and the border trade.

Rabiei further made it clear that Iran is willing to cooperate with every country that is determined to cooperate and has goodwill, including Russia.

Tehran welcomes any initiative with the purpose of promoting amity, but the US is an exception, he added.

The spokesman further pointed to the falling price of foreign currency in the Iranian market, saying the administration expects to increase the currency incomes with the gradual removal of the coronavirus-related restrictions.

The currency price is moving towards its real rate, he added.

Rabiei then called on people to keep observing the health protocols to tackle COVID-19, saying if 95 percent of people wear face masks, the positive results will outperform an economic shutdown.

Iran saw its daily death toll from the novel coronavirus rise to a new record on Tuesday with 229 lives lost.

At least 242,351 patients have recovered from the coronavirus infection so far or have been discharged from hospitals across Iran.

Record-High Number of Iranians Die of COVID-19 in 24 Hours

Health Ministry spokeswoman says the new fatalities raise the overall death toll to 14,634. In her press briefing on Tuesday, Sima-Sadat Lari also confirmed 2,625 new cases of COVID-19 infection, increasing the total number of infections to 278,827.

According to the spokeswoman, 242,351 patients have so far recovered from COVID-19, while 3,589 are still in severe conditions of the disease.

She said so far 2,201,958 COVID-19 tests have been taken across the country. Lari added that Khuzestan, Kerman, Ilam, West Azarbaijan, East Azarbaijan, Alborz, Golestan, Zanjan, Lorestan, Mazandaran, Fars, and Khorasan Razavi are considered as “red zones”.

Armenian Cemeteries of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari 3

17 Armenian cemeteries in the province have been registered in the National Heritage list of Iran; among them two cemeteries- those of Sirk and Ma’moureh villages- have more beautiful, specific features.

Although all Armenians from these villages have migrated to other parts of Iran and the world, some cemeteries have remained there from the time this minority lived in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari.

The cemetery of Sirk dates back to 200 years ago; and that of Ma’moureh is 110 years old. Special carvings and masonry on the tombstones, which are unparalleled handicrafts, have made unique memorials for Armenians who once lived there.
