‘King Salman Pins Blame on Iran to Cover Up Riyadh Dark Record’

“Saudi Arabia desperately seeks to press charges against others in order to deflect attention from its long, dark record of extensively supporting terrorism, promoting extremist ideologies, sowing the seeds of discord and hatred, making destabilizing moves in the region and committing crimes during its aggression against Yemen in the past six years,” Majid Takht-Ravanchi noted.

“It has completely been proven that Saudi Arabia, as a source of instability in the region, was the main financial supporter of Saddam Hussein, the Iraqi dictator, during Iraq’s eight-year aggression against Iran during which he committed countless crimes, including using chemical weapons against Iranian and Iraqi citizens and cities,” he added.

“It has also become completely clear today that Saudi Wahhabi ideology was the main source of inspiration for the most dangerous terrorist groups such as the ISIS and al-Qaeda, and this country is seen as the key sponsor of these groups with its petrodollars,” he said.

“Another example of Saudi Arabia’s destabilizing move in the region is its merciless killings during its aggression against Yemen over the past six years, which have had no results other than the killing of women and children and the destruction of houses, mosques and hospitals and the targeting of mourning and wedding ceremonies alike,” he noted.

“These crimes against Yemeni children have been so heinous that the UN has put Saudi Arabia on top of the list of the world’s child-killing entities, though the name of the country was removed from the list later due to completely unprofessional reasons,” he said.

The ambassador said Riyadh, in an inhumane move, keeps using famine as a war tactic and also prevents fuel, food and medicines from being sent to Yemeni people.

Iran’s reaction came after the Saudi king, in his UN General Assembly speech, accused Iran of having struck Saudi oil facilities with missiles last year, a charge that Tehran vehemently denies.

The monarch claimed Iran keeps targeting Saudi Arabia with ballistic missiles and drones.
He said international pressure against Iran should increase in order to prevent Tehran from attaining what he called “weapons of mass destruction.”

Zarif made the remarks in a speech to a virtual ministerial meeting of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA).

What follows is the full text of Foreign Minister Zarif’s speech delivered on Thursday, September 24, 2020:

 

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

Mr. Chairman,

Allow me to begin by thanking you for convening this important CICA event, and to extend my best wishes to our new Executive Director.

Distinguished Colleagues,

To meet the special challenges of our time, we need to solidify our cooperation within the framework of CICA. We need to secure a pivotal role for the organization, to advance multilateralism, and to ensure inclusive collaboration. It is imperative for us to pool our resources to jointly tackle the enormous challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic.

First and foremost, we all need to embrace multilateralism and reject unilateralism in addressing a global challenge of this magnitude; one that has defied all geographical, political and socio-economic divisions.

As CICA members, we should strive to strengthen cooperation within the framework of our organization—in coordination with the UN and WHO—to ensure full, free and fair access to health services, medicine, and medical equipment for our peoples. We must also act to ensure that no one can arbitrarily challenge professional international organizations.

We must collectively emphasize the need for industrialized economies to assist developing countries in the transfer of medical technology and equipment. And we must urge international economic institutions—as well as wealthy countries—to provide other nations and relevant international and regional organizations with necessary financial assistance in their campaigns against the pandemic.

As inheritors of great Asian civilizations, we should always encourage a people-first approach, putting saving human lives and human dignity above all else, and reject any politicization of the pandemic.

We need to jointly confront the destructive impact of unilateral coercive measures on efforts to combat the pandemic. They are nothing but economic and medical terrorism, and we must refuse to comply with these unlawful measures in our collective endeavor to tackle this common affliction of humanity.

Dear Friends,

The only way to overcome common challenges that threaten the health and security of our nations is to work together to find common solutions that effectively and decisively address the sources of the threats.  My country stands ready to join our friends and neighbors in CICA and exchange knowledge and expertise in this collective mission.

We need humility and multilateral cooperation to grapple with a microscopic enemy that has brought major powers to their knee—without deference to their military might, economic wealth and propaganda machines.

Mahmoud Vaezi, the chief of staff of the Iranian president, said the US was trying to boost Trump’s election campaign by targeting Iran.

“The covert objective that they had and did not reveal was [that they wanted to use their anti-Iran move to reinforce their campaign for] the US election, given that Mr. Trump doesn’t have a good standing in the presidential race,” he said.

“He is seeking tools to change the atmosphere of the election [in his own favour]. It seems the United States’ move was not useful for him and was not effective even with regards to domestic presidential elections,” he added.

“So I think the international community and the UN Security Council rejected the US demand and once again expressed their support for the JCPOA and Resolution 2231,” he added.

The official underlined that the US should not have tried to mobilize countries against Iran as it was a foregone conclusion.

“Whatever the US did and whatever efforts it made over the past 32 or 33 days didn’t have any political or legal grounds. In my idea, if someone knows the ABCs of politics and economy, they won’t take such a gamble,” he added.

“From the very beginning, it was clear that the Americans would lose. Not only Iranian, but even US diplomats and legal experts have said time and again that they don’t know on what basis the Trump administration is referring to a deal that it has proudly withdrawn from,” Vaezi said.

He said UN Security Council members rejected Washington’s demand and they reiterated that the US request has no political and legal basis.

“I want to thank the international community, permanent members of the UN Security Council, the EU and European countries, especially our two friends China and Russia for adopting very straightforward and clear positions over the past month,” he added.

“It seems that everything is clear today. The trigger (snapback mechanism) that Mr. Trump and Mr. Pompeo were seeking and publicizing had no supporters and did not go into force,” said Vaezi.

“This should be an object lesson for the US government not to link [election] campaign issues with political issues,” he said.

“As the base and birthplace of the ideologies of Takifiri terrorist groups and the main financial and logistical supporter of terrorism in the region, Saudi Arabia has, for years, been pursuing a blame-game policy and seeking to distort realities in order to escape the realities and not to be held accountable for its crimes,” said the spokesman.

“The Saudi regime’s support for, and alignment with the US in its failed policy of ‘maximum pressure’ on Iran, its attempts to expand relations with the usurper Zionist regime of Israel, and paying billions of dollars of Saudi people’s money in ransom have not only failed to produce any results for Saudi Arabia, but also turned it into a humiliated creature among Arab countries,” he added.

“Saudi Arabia has become delirious due to back-to-back defeats it has suffered both on the ground and on the political front in Yemen, and Riyadh wants to shirk responsibility for the war crimes it has committed against Yemeni women and children,” the spokesman noted.

“In line with its responsible approach in the region, the Islamic Republic of Iran has, time and again, reminded the world of the Saudis’ miscalculations which have imposed a heavy price on the region, and keeps emphasizing its fundamental policy of boosting diplomatic and dialogue-oriented talks in the region and the promotion of relations with all neighbours,” he said.

In a statement on Wednesday, Saeed Khatibzadeh said Iran believes the politically-motivated behaviour and selective moves of the US and certain European governments have always dealt the heaviest blow to the principle of human rights.

He also described the approach, remarks, and moves of certain European countries as an instance of interference in Iran’s internal affairs, and said authorities at the relevant level have taken, and will continue to take, necessary measures in reaction to the move.

“It is quite surprising and unbelievable to us that these countries have not only refused to show any reaction to the blatant violation of the Iranian nation’s rights caused by the US’ inhumane policy of maximum pressure and its cruel and anti-human sanctions, but are also fanning its flames and practically joining it through their inaction,” he added.

His comments came after Guardian claimed France, Germany and the UK are summoning Iranian ambassadors in a coordinated diplomatic protest against Iran’s detention of dual nationals and its treatment of political prisoners.

Guardian says it has seen a letter handed to the Iranian ambassador to the UK, Hamid Baeidinejad, which claims “Iran’s policy of arbitrary detention” is seriously undermining its international standing.

The report says the Iranian envoy had been summoned by the Foreign Office on Tuesday to meet senior officials, and the Iranian ambassadors in Paris and Berlin are also being called in this week.

The letter claims British citizens, including dual nationals, are languishing in Iranian prisons, often under harsh conditions and without justification. It argues they have been arbitrarily detained and deserve to be reunited with their families.

Over 3,600 New Cases of COVID-19 Infection Identified in Iran

In a press briefing on Wednesday, Sima-Sadat Lari said the virus has killed 184 patients since Tuesday noon, increasing the overall death toll to 24,840.

So far, she added, 365,846 patients have recovered from the disease or been discharged from the hospital.

Lari said 3,869 patients are also in critical conditions caused by more severe infection.
The spokeswoman noted that 3,828,330 COVID-19 tests have been taken across the country so far.

She said the high-risk “red” zones include Tehran, Qom, Mazandaran, East Azarbaijan, Isfahan, Yazd, Khorasan Razavi, North Khorasan, Semnan, Gilan, Zanjan, Qazvin, and Kerman provinces.

The “orange” zones also include Lorestan, Ardabil, Golestan, Markazi, Alborz, Hormozgan, Ilam, Fars, Bushehr, West Azarbaijan, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, Kermanshah, South Khorasan, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, and Khuzestan provinces, she added.
