Iran Pays No Heed to Pompeo’s Words in His Last Days in Office: Spokesman

Iranian Government Spokesman Ali Rabiei said the White House has, so far, failed to accept this defeat due to their vanity and short-mindedness.

Rabiei made the comment in response to remarks by a reporter who quoted Pompeo as saying that the “maximum pressure” policy against Iran has been successful, and that all options remain on the table.

The spokesman also described Pompeo as “the worst secretary of state in the United States’ history.”

“Of course, if the ‘maximum pressure’ policy and unprecedented sanctions have been aimed at affecting our people’s livelihoods and impeding their access to medicines and food and creating troubles for Iranians across the world by cutting them off from the international financial network, or if they wanted to make our people believe that ruthless and merciless US leaders have been more successful, I should say that they succeeded in achieving those objectives,” he said.

Rabiei noted “this bankrupt US administration” should be reminded that it has no option left on the table and they have reached a deadend.

“The reality is that the days of these failed policies and those behind them are numbered, and we don’t care about their hollow rhetoric,” he noted.

Iran Leader’s Military Aide to Run for 2021 Presidential Election

The top general, a former defence minister, is an advisor to Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei for defence affairs.

Dehqan said on Tuesday he seeks to further empower society, reinforce infrastructure and upgrade the country and nation’s dignity on the world stage.

He said he does not specifically belong to either of the two major political camps in Iran, i.e., reformists and conservatives.

“Rather, I believe in the nature and origin of the Revolution, which was the manifestation of people’s demand,” he noted.

The general said gone are the days of political bickering and disputes in the country.

He urged political groups to work towards meeting people’s demands before seeking partisan demands.

Dehqan was born on March 3, 1957 in the Poodeh village in central Isfahan province. He holds a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in Metallurgy Engineering from the University of Tehran. He also completed his PhD program in Management at the same university.

He joined Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) in 1979. He served as the deputy commander of the IRGC Air Force from 1986 to 1990, and was the commander of the air force from 1990 to 1991.

General Dehqan served as Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the IRGC from 1992 to 1996. He also served as the deputy defence minister in the seventh administration, and vice president in the eighth and ninth administrations.

He was the defence chief in the eleventh administration. In a decree by Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei on August 20, 2017, General Dehqan was designated as his advisor for defence and logistics affairs.

Tehran, Dohan to Forge Closer Economic Cooperation

The two countries discussed closer collaboration on the economic front at the 7th Meeting of the Iran-Qatar Joint Economic Cooperation Commission held in the city of Isfahan in central Iran.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian said the meeting was held with a delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The session was scheduled to be held [some time] in the past months and to be attended by a large number of economic activists of both countries, but unfortunately, due to the outbreak of the virus and the restrictions imposed on travel and holding gatherings accordingly, the seventh meeting of the two countries’ joint economic cooperation commission was held on a limited scale,” said the minister.

“After the US, Britain and France, the Qatari government sent its commercial attaché to Iran, and today, Iran is the fourth country where Qatar has sent its commercial attaché to boost commercial ties, which means the two countries are seriously determined to promote their cooperation on different fronts,” he said.

The minister said Qatar has gone through difficult times recently, and at the same time, Iran has been facing an economic war launched by enemies, making mutual economic cooperation all the more significant.

He said the two sides can also work together in the areas of water, technical and engineering services, energy and transportation.

Iran Advises Europe Not to Sacrifice Its Independence for US

During the phone call, the two sides conferred on the latest international developments, regional issues, JCPOA-related issues, and bilateral and consular relations between Tehran and Stockholm.

Foreign Minister Zarif referred to the United States’ unlawful and unfair sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran, and criticized European countries for their failure to fulfill their commitments under the JCPOA.

He also advised the Swedish top diplomat not to sacrifice their independence and sovereignty for the bullying and cruel policies of the US.

Iran Says Tracking Infected Patients to Combat COVID-19

President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday that an increase in the number of tests will greatly help contain the disease.

“Increasing the number of tests to 100 thousand per day and tracking infected people and their relatives will be the most important step toward reducing fatalities, and I hope these measures will soon cut off the chain of infection,” he said.

The president further expressed gratitude to people and business owners for their cooperation to stem the spread of the disease.

“Despite sustaining economic and financial losses, business owners shut down their activities for the sake of people’s health during the time restrictions were enforced,” he said at a meeting of specialized committees of the National Coronavirus Headquarters.

In the meeting, the president instructed the committees to make every effort in order to keep the COVID-19 infection from surging again when restrictions end.

Elsewhere in his remarks, President Rouhani appreciated efforts to develop a vaccine for coronavirus and purchase vaccines from other countries.

“Incontrovertibly, given the scientific and technological capabilities in the country, Iran will be able to produce a vaccine in the country with reliance on its scientists,” he noted.

“Given that the necessary infrastructure has been provided, Iran will be able to mass-produce the vaccine in the country as well,” he said.

Iran Says to Continue Talks over Karabakh Conflict to Ensure Lasting Peace

Iranian Government Spokesman Ali Rabiei made the comment in response to a question about Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s upcoming visit to the Azerbaijan Republic and Russia for talks on the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute as well as issues of mutual interest.

“As announced before, Mr. Zarif’s travel schedule has changed as he had to take part in a session on the next year’s budget,” he said.

“But due to the friendly relationship that we have with both neighbouring countries, i.e., the Azerbaijan Republic and Armenia, we will continue consultations with all sides to make sure that first, the peace achieved will be fully observed by the warring sides, and second, this peace will be a prelude to a permanent and lasting settlement of differences in the Nagorno-Karabakh region and will delineate the future path to securing the interests of both countries and lead to collective and fair development in a peaceful atmosphere,” he said.

“We know that the lives and minds of people in the Nagorno-Karabakh region are harmed by violent incidents over the past few days,” the spokesman added.

“We hope all regional countries, in tandem with diplomatic efforts to stabilize peace, will try their best to cure these wounds and ease the sufferings of people ravaged by war,” he said.

US’ Responsible Withdrawal from Afghanistan Positive Step towards Peace: Zarif

Addressing the 2020 Geneva virtual conference on Afghanistan, Zarif said the military approach to building peace has failed, and the presence of foreign troops has been a lingering problem.

“A responsible exit of foreign troops from Afghanistan—with a smooth and effective assumption of their duties by the Afghan security forces—will be a positive step toward a sustainable peace,” he noted.

He said Iran has always supported intra-Afghan talks, owned and led by Afghans themselves, including the Taliban, which preserves the post-2001 achievements: the democratic Constitution, the right of the people to self-determination through elections, the rights of religious and ethnic minorities, the rights of women; and combating terrorism.

What follows is the full text of Foreign Minister Zarif’s speech:

Distinguished Friends,

It is a tragedy of epic proportions that twenty years after the conference in Bonn, we are still talking about war in Afghanistan. For over 40 years, Afghans have endured bloodshed, perpetrated primarily from the outside.

The military approach to building peace has failed, and the presence of foreign troops has been a lingering problem. A responsible exit of foreign troops from Afghanistan—with a smooth and effective assumption of their duties by the Afghan security forces—will be a positive step toward a sustainable peace.

Iran has always supported intra-Afghan dialogue, owned and led by Afghans themselves, which should include the Taliban, and which preserves the post-2001 achievements: the democratic Constitution, the right of the people to self-determination through elections, the rights of religious and ethnic minorities, the rights of women; and combatting terrorism. The UN should be central in facilitating intra-Afghan dialogue, and Iran stands ready to cooperate.

Distinguished Friends,

We all know that poverty and unemployment are fertile grounds for extremism, terrorism, and drug trafficking. Peace will not be sustainable if Afghans have to struggle to simply survive.

For our part,

We host over 3 million Afghans, using our subsidized food, transport and health services, in spite of savage US economic war against our people.

470000 Afghan students attend our schools,

22000 Afghans are being trained by our universities.

We connect Afghanistan to the outside world through Chabahr, The Khaf-Herat railway is due to be inaugurated in the coming days.

Our power plants provide electricity for Afghan people.

And we can do far more in the field of energy.

But instead of facilitating, the US—through its economic terrorism targeting Iranians and Afghans alike—impedes such cooperation.

Also, international donors have a seriously flawed approach—exemplified in the order of speakers in this meeting putting the neighbors last.

The world must put the people of Afghanistan before other considerations.

Daily Rise in Iran’s COVID-19 Cases at All-Time High Despite Lockdown

In a press briefing on Tuesday, Sima-Sadat Lari said the virus has also killed 483 patients since Monday noon, increasing the overall death toll to 45,738.

She said so far 617,715 patients have recovered from the disease or been discharged from the hospital.

Lari went on to say that 5,824 patients are also in critical conditions caused by more severe infection.

The spokeswoman noted that 5,871,098 COVID-19 tests have been taken across the country so far.

She said the high-risk “red” zones include Tehran, Qom, Mazandaran, East Azarbaijan, Isfahan, Yazd, Ardabil, Khorasan Razavi, Khuzestan, Hamadan, West Azarbaijan, Bushehr, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, Alborz, Lorestan, Markazi, Ilam, South Khorasan, Kermanshah, North Khorasan, Semnan, Gilan, Zanjan, Qazvin, Kurdistan, and Kerman provinces.

The “orange” and “yellow” zones also include Golestan, Hormozgan, Fars, and Sistan and Baluchestan provinces, she added.

Iranians Happy to See Failure of US Maximum Pressure: Spokesman

Ali Rabiei

Speaking in a Tuesday press conference, Ali Rabiei said Iranians are happy to see the policy has been a non-starter.

“What made people happy was the failure of the ‘maximum pressure’ policy as well as the masterminds and advocates of that policy,” he said.

“Regardless of the outcome of the US presidential election, our people became pleased to see the ‘maximum pressure’ policy had failed. And Iranian people had every right [to be happy],” said the spokesman.

“Today, illegal sanctions against our nation are at their weakest and most ineffective point ever in the past three years. People and markets have clearly received the message that the sound of the wall of sanctions and the maximum pressure policy crashing down has echoed across the world,” he noted.

Rabiei said the outcome of the US presidential vote had no bearing on the failure of the “maximum pressure” policy.

“The reason behind the collapse of the wall of sanctions was not a change of administrations in the US; rather, the reason was definitely our people’s resistance against the United States’ bullying as well as weak, inhumane and coercive logic, which came to light for the international community, too,” he said.

“We do believe that even if Trump were elected President, the policy of sanctions would be doomed to failure, too.,” said the spokesman.
