Iran Reports Lowest Daily Rise in COVID-19 Deaths Since June 1

In a press briefing on Sunday, Health Ministry spokeswoman Sima-Sadat Lari reported 7,065 new cases of COVID-19 infection, raising the total number of cases to 1,466,435.

So far, Lari added, 1,253,554 patients have recovered from the disease or been discharged from the hospital.

Lari said 3,789 patients are also in critical conditions caused by more severe infection.
The spokeswoman noted that 9,667,260 COVID-19 tests have been taken across the country so far.

She said currently 36 cities are in the “orange” zone, 178 are in the “yellow” zone, and 234 are in the “blue” zone in terms of coronavirus outbreak.

The “orange” cities include Amol, Babol, Babolsar, Behshahr, Tonekabon, Juybar, Ramsar, Sari, Savadkuh, Qaemshahr, Mahmoud Abad, Neka, Noor and Nowshahr in Mazandaran province, Astaneh Ashrafieh, Bandar Anzali, Rasht, Rudbar, Some’eh Sara, Rudsar, and Lahijan in Gilan province, Ajabshir in East Azarbaijan province, Ardestan in Isfahan province, Esfarayen in North Khorasan province, Garmsar in Semnan province, Baft in Kerman province, Paveh in Kermanshah province, Bandar Gaz and Kordkuy in Golestan province, Bastak, Bandar Lengeh, and Qeshm in Hormozgan province, Bahar, Tuyserkan and Razan in Hamadan province, and Abarkuh in Yazd province.

Iran to Return to JCPOA Obligations Only If US Sanctions Lifted: Ayatollah Khamenei

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said Iran will not listen to words of drivel with regards to sanctions.

“As far as sanctions are concerned, first of all, no one in the Islamic Republic of Iran would listen to those talking nonsense whether in Europe or in the United States,” said the Leader in a Sunday meeting with Air Force commanders and personnel.

“Secondly, if we want to talk logically, the US and the three European countries which have violated all their JCPOA commitments are not entitled to set conditions as they have failed to make good on their obligations under the nuclear deal,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

“The party which has the right to set conditions is Iran because it has delivered on all its commitments,” he noted.

Ayatollah Khamenei said Iran, after verifying that sanctions have been lifted in practice, will return to its obligations.

“This is Iran’s definitive policy and the country’s officials have consensus on that and we will not drop this policy,” he stressed.

Present at the ceremony was President Hassan Rouhani, who said farmers have secured the country’s self-sufficiency and independence as well as people’s food security by making efforts day in day out.

“One of the honours of this administration is the implementation of major works in different agricultural areas,” he said.

The president added plans have been drawn up to reap more harvest from limited amount of land and water.

“4.3 million people are working in the agriculture today, which is very important for us,” he noted.

Iran Begins Clinical Trial of Its Second Homegrown COVID-19 Vaccine

Covo Pars is a vaccine which is administered both by injection and inhalation.

Local experts have used biotechnology to make the vaccine.

The vaccine has already been tested successfully on animals, including guinea pigs, hamsters and monkeys.

The Covo Pars vaccine has been developed by the Razi Institute, which is one of the most important medical research centres in the Middle East.
The clinical trial of Covo Pars was launched in a Sunday ceremony in Tehran attended by experts and officials.

Present at the event was Health Minister Saeed Namaki, who said the development of a coronavirus vaccine is a complex process.
He described the achievement as a source of national pride.

The minister added, it is not clear how effective the coronaries vaccines developed by different countries are, but that they are the only way available to help contain the disease.

Iran had earlier developed another COVID-19 vaccine called COVIRAN, which is going through the first human trial phase.

The volunteers who received the shot had no symptoms such as shock or fever after the injection.

Iran to Give ‘Decisive Response’ to Israel, Envoy Tells UN Chief

Majid Takht Ravanchi made the remarks in a letter to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and the current president of the UN Security Council.

“Recently, the Israeli regime has not only intensified its provocative and hawkish remarks against the Islamic Republic of Iran, but is also actively planning to carry out its hostile threats against Iran,” the Iranian envoy said in the letter.

He referred to the top Israeli military official’s January 26 “false” claims about Iran’s peaceful nuclear program as the latest case of such anti-Iran threats, and said, “In addition to their current plans against Iran, the Israeli military forces are also preparing operational plans to develop them for the next year, as such plans must be ‘on the table’.”

He described such threats as a “blatant violation of the Article 2 of the UN Charter”, and stressed that the international community must give an appropriate response given the “dark record of the regime in attacking regional countries”.

Takht Ravanchi warned about any Israeli military adventurism against Iran, adding, “We reserve our natural right to defense, and will give a decisive response to any threat or incorrect move by the Israeli regime.”

“It is perfectly clear that the Israeli regime must shoulder full responsibility for its unbridled and incorrect moves,” he warned, calling on the Security Council to confront Israel’s “destabilizing” policies and “hawkish” moves.

In late January, Israeli Army Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Aviv Kochavi warned the administration of US President Joe Biden against rejoining the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, adding that he had ordered his forces to step up preparations for possible offensive action against Iran.

“I instructed the army to prepare a number of operational plans in addition to the existing ones,” he said. “We are taking care of these plans and will develop them during the coming year. Those who decide on carrying them out, of course, are the political leaders. But these plans have to be on the table.”

In reaction to his remarks, Iranian military officials fired back by saying the regime will only speed up its annihilation if it makes even the slightest move.

Hossein Dehqan, a military advisor to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, downplayed the threats that the Tel Aviv regime issues against the Islamic Republic from time to time and said the Israelis “do not even dare to fire a bullet at dear Iran.”

He warned the regime, however, that Iran’s “doctrine is defensive but based on severe punishment for the aggressors. Do not rush for annihilation!”

Additionally, the spokesperson for the Iranian Armed Forces described Kochavi’s rhetoric as “nothing more than hallucinations.”

“If the Zionists make a foolish move or any mistake, even the slightest one, against Iran, they will face a reaction that will destroy Tel Aviv and hasten the end of their regime,” Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi told Iran’s Arabic-language Al Alam news network.

“An increase in the cash flow in society has attracted some middlemen to the auto market; of course, these people will make losses in the future,” he said.

He noted there are more than 2,000 in the country producing auto spare parts, adding over $3 billion has been invested in this industry.

Iran Says Will Press Saudi Arabia’s Hand If Extended

Mohammad Javad Zarif said Iran has always welcomed any such gestures.

“The Saudi foreign minister said recently that they have extended their hand to Iran,” said Zarif in an exclusive interview with Hamshahri newspaper.

“If they have extended their hand, we, too, have always extended our hand; then why don’t these two hands reach each other,” the foreign minister asked.

“The reason is that they want an intermediary between these two hands, and that is an iron fist by others which Saudi Arabia wants them to pound on Iran’s hand,” Zarif explained.

“But this dream will never come true, and this is not something new, either,” he stressed.

“They gave $75 billion to [Iraqi ex-ruler and dictator] Saddam Hussein to be used against Iran,” he said.

“Later, they turned to the US, and now they have turned to the Israelis,” Zarif added.

“Well, extend this hand and don’t look for a fake hand. The hand [you’re looking for] is artificial,” he said.

“Extend the hand of your own as our neighbour,” the foreign minister said.

“Iran has numerous proposals which you can use,” he said.

Iran Condemns Canada’s Human Rights Resolution

“Dropping support for, and refusing to sell weapons to the Saudi-led coalition can be a step towards correcting past mistakes if it is not a political gambit,” said Saeed Khatibzadeh on Saturday.

“Such a move alone will not resolve the Yemen issue, and it should be followed by the lifting of the air, sea and land blockade which has led to deaths of thousands Yemeni people due to a shortage of food and medicine,” he said.

“Saudi-led military attacks on Yemen by aggressor countries should stop, too,” he added.

He said the international community and some countries which are accessories to Saudi crimes against Yemeni people by providing arms should stop their support for Saudi Arabia as well and not allow this humanitarian disaster to go on.
“Unfortunately, Saudi Arabia became more vulnerable by launching a war on Yemen, and, by levelling unfounded accusations against other countries in line with the United States’ maximum pressure policy, seeks to absolve itself from [any blame for] the military aggression on Yemen and the killing of thousands of women and children,” the spokesman said.
“Meanwhile, we hope hawkish countries will come to realize their strategic mistake regarding the aggression on Yemen, and, by admitting to their mistake over the past six years, put an end to the war and blockade on Yemen and go for a peaceful solution,” Khatibzadeh said.
“Iran welcomes any efforts by the international community to back Yemen and cut off aggressors’ support, and believes its proposed four-item solution is still effective in solving the problem,” he added.

Iran's COVID-19 Cases Hit 345,000: Health Ministry

Spokesman for the National Coronavirus Headquarters Alireza Raisi said on Saturday the number of “orange” cities has doubled, though there are no “red” cities in the country at the moment.

Based on a national classification of cities in terms of the severity of and prevalence of the disease, “red” cities are the highest-risk ones followed by “orange” and “yellow” cities respectively.

He urged citizens to keep observing health protocols and avoid family and social gatherings to help contain the spread of the virus.

The official underlined that the first batch of COVID-19 vaccines has arrived in the country, adding vaccination begins soon based on priorities.

He said vaccination could ward off a fourth surge in the disease and help citizens have a happy New Year.

She also confirmed 6,983 new cases of COVID-19 infection in 24 hours, increasing the total number of cases to 1,459,370.

Lari said the virus has killed 76 patients since Friday noon, raising the overall death toll to 58,412.

So far, Lari added, 1,247,374 patients have recovered from the disease or been discharged from the hospital.

Lari said 3,802 patients are also in critical conditions caused by more severe infection.

The spokeswoman noted that 9,612,033 COVID-19 tests have been taken across the country so far.

Iran Planning to Replace POS Terminals with Smartphone Payment System

CBI Governor Abdolnasser Hemmati said the move is aimed at phasing out the use of bank and facilitating e-payments.

“This method of payment is compatible with valid international standards and makes it possible, in a very secure manner, for customers to put the data of their bank cards into their mobile phones and make payments without using POS machines,” he said.

“Using mobile phones to make payments while shopping can not only facilitate payment for users, but also help observe health protocols at a time of the coronavirus outbreak,” he added.
