Armenia’s top security official holds discussions with Iranian envoy

The two sides reviewed security issues and stability in the region.

Grigoryan and Badakhshan Zohuri also exchanged views on the prospect of cooperation to solve new challenges in the region and economic relations between Armenia and Iran, especially the development of Armenian Province of Syunik, and stressed the importance of the Iranian port of Chabahar.

The Iranian ambassador stressed that Tehran is trying to strengthen its relations with Armenia at the highest level.

On Monday, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan sat down for talks with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian in Tehran.

Amirabdollahian told the Armenian foreign minister that Tehran will not allow terrorist forces and the Zionist regime to harm Iran’s good relations with its neighbors.

Mirzoyan said during the meeting that rapid international and regional developments have led senior officials of the two countries to meet frequently.

Meanwhile Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on Monday that the Islamic Republic is Armenia’s partner, and that Yerevan has never been and will never be involved in any plot against Iran.

US legal advisor resigns over Biden immigration policy

A prominent legal adviser to the Biden administration has issued a six-page memo accusing the United States government of breaking international law by expelling migrants without even considering their claims to asylum.

First invoked by the Trump administration, Title 42 was ostensibly intended to protect public health. An order issued by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in March 2020 cited COVID-19 as a reason to effectively close the border to migrants seeking refuge. It was harshly criticized at the time by public health experts outside the administration, who viewed it as a means of carrying out a long-standing policy goal of limiting immigration, using the pandemic as justification.

While the Biden administration’s critics falsely claim there are now “open borders”, Biden has continued enforcing the order – appealing a recent court decision that found it illegal – with exceptions made for unaccompanied children and many families. Last month, nearly 4,600 Haitians, the majority women and children, were expelled in a matter of days under the policy.

“Is this who we are?” That’s the question State Department legal adviser Harold Koh asks in the memo obtained and published by Politico on Monday.

A law professor at Yale University, Koh notes that the US is obliged, under international law, not to expel vulnerable people back to countries where they legitimately fear persecution.

From October 2020 through August 2021, US Border Patrol expelled people under Title 42 more than 938,000 times.

It is “particularly unjustifiable” in the case of Haiti, Koh writes, with the administration not even considering the asylum claims of Haitians it expels under Title 42 – despite itself acknowledging, in its granting of Temporary Protected Status for those already residing in the US, that Haiti has been rocked by political instability and natural disasters that make it unsafe place to which to return.

“Title 42 permits customs officers, with supervisor approval, to identify persons who should
be excepted from expulsion based on the totality of the circumstances, including consideration of
significant law enforcement, office and public safety, humanitarian and public health interests,” Koh said.

“But if Haiti is undeniably a humanitarian disaster area, the question should be: at this moment, why is this Administration returning Haitians at all?” he asked.

Politico reported that Koh is leaving his position as an adviser to the State Department and that his memo had “been circulating across the administration” over the weekend. Reached by Insider, he declined to comment on the potential repercussions for the White House continuing, in his view, to violate international law.

Koh previously advised the State Department during President Barack Obama’s administration, attracting controversy at the time over his argument that the US had a legal right to carry out extrajudicial executions, via drone strikes, in countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Yemen.

Iranian FM condoles with Oman over Cyclone tolls

Amirabdollahian announced Iran’s readiness to provide Oman with any assistance.

Cyclone Shaheen has killed over a dozen people in Oman and caused substantial material damage.

The Iranian foreign minister further referred to the excellent relations between the two countries and stressed the need to further expand bilateral cooperation and implement the joint projects.

Amirabdollahian also conveyed the warm greetings of Iran’s president to the Sultan of Oman.

The Omani Foreign Minister also thanked Amirabdollahian for his sympathy, saying the crisis is now over and that the Omani government is in control of the situation.

Badr al-Busaidi expressed satisfaction with the level and quality of the historical and extensive relations between Iran and Oman. He announced Muscat’s readiness to expand relations with Tehran as much as possible and expressed hope that the two top diplomats would meet at the earliest opportunity.

Badr al-Busaidi also conveyed the warm greetings of the Sultan of Oman to the high-ranking officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

UK military begins fuel delivery amid driver shortage

Military personnel have started delivering fuel to petrol stations for the first time in a bid to tackle the ongoing supply crisis caused by a shortage of heavy goods vehicle (HGV) drivers and panic buying.

About 200 military personnel, half of them tanker drivers, have hit the road under Operation Escalin, to deliver fuel to forecourts across the country.

The troops, who have been on standby since last week, are expected to “fill in any critical vacancies and help keep the country on the move” ahead of Christmas, the UK government announced on Friday.

While the government believes that the demand for fuel across the UK has stabilised, military personnel are concentrated in London and the South of England as the recovery rate has been “slightly slower”.

“We are working closely with industry to help increase fuel stocks and there are signs of improvement in average forecourt stocks across the UK with demand continuing to stabilise,” a government spokesperson was quoted as saying by Press Association (PA).

“Stocks in London and the South of England have been recovering at slightly slower rates than other parts of the UK, so we have begun deploying military personnel to boost supply in these areas,” the spokesperson added.

“More than half of those who have completed training to make fuel deliveries are being deployed to terminals serving London and the South-East of England, demonstrating that the sector is allocating drivers to areas most affected in this first phase from Monday,” the spokesperson noted.

The announcement for troop deployment came after Sir Keir Starmer warned that prime minister Boris Johnson’s failure to “get a grip” of the HGV driver shortage is threatening to ruin the festive season.

The move was welcomed by the Petrol Retailers Association (PRA), which represents independent retailers. PRA chairman Brian Madderson, however, stated that while the use of the military would be a “large help”, it would have a “limited impact” in hard-hit areas.

“This isn’t going to be the major panacea”, he added.

He said that while there had been an improvement in the north of England and Scotland, fuel shortages remain a “really big problem” in London and the southeast, stating, “If anything, it had got worse.”

In an interview with Sky News, he added that a survey done by his organisation on Saturday revealed that one in five has no fuel.

The government on Friday also announced a U-turn on its emergency visa scheme as it extended it by two months for nearly 5,000 foreign food haulage drivers. The visas were due to expire on 24 December but have now been extended until the end of February.

Johnson, who was attending the opening day of the Tory Party conference in Manchester on Sunday, repeatedly refused to rule out shortages in the wider economy in the run up to Christmas, even as he argued that the crisis was “abating” and that the military were being deployed as “precaution”.

The prime minister acknowledged that the country is going through a “period of adjustment” following Brexit, as it has cut off the supply of labour from the European Union.

Iranian delegation in Kabul, talking trade with Taliban

That’s according to the regional office of Tasnim News Agency. The report says the Iranian delegation held talks with Afghanistan’s ministers of Economy and Information and Culture, the governor of Herat and the Afghan Customs officials to resolve border and transit problems.

The talks were also aimed at paving the way for bilateral agreements on facilitating border traffic, transit of goods and fuel, border markets and issues of mutual interest.

In these meetings, the two sides agreed to closely review and resolve those problems and Afghanistan’s customs and trade issues as well as the problems of drivers in Iran and Afghanistan within the next 10 days.

They also agreed that Dogharun Customs provide the required services to Iranian and Afghan transit vehicles on a 24-hour basis in the next 10 days.

According to the agreements between the Iranian and Afghan officials, a delegation consisting of the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development of Afghanistan and the Governor of Herat, as well as representatives from Khorasan province and representatives of Iran’s Ministry of Roads and Transportation are scheduled to visit and rehabilitate the railway line at the border and reach a conclusion within the next few days.

Motamedian had previously said, “Khorasan Razavi province has a 300-kilometer border with Afghanistan, and more importantly, the Dogharun border crossing, where 60% of Iran-Afghanistan trade is conducted, is located on the border with Khorasan Razavi.”

Over a million vaccinated against Covid-19 in 24 hours in Iran

So far, 41,809,085 Iranians have received the first dose of the Covid vaccine while 16,950,755 people have been fully inoculated.

The vaccination of students aged between 12 and 18 will begin in Tehran on Tuesday. The Iranian Ministry of Education has called on parents to refer to vaccination centers and get their children inoculated.

Authorities have set up 100 vaccination places in Tehran. The Ministry of Education hopes to reopen schools in November given the vaccination process has gained steam.

Directors general of Tehran Education Departments are attending virtual briefing sessions on the vaccination of students.

Meanwhile, Iranian Health Ministry announced on Monday Covid-19 has killed 238 people in Iran in the past 24 hours. Covid deaths now stand at 121,347.

But fatalities, infections and hospitalizations are down compared with the worst of the fifth peak of the Coronavirus in Iran. The downward trend has continued for the past couple of weeks. Officials attribute this to the rising pace of the vaccination process across Iran.

Iran FM warns about ‘intolerable crisis’ in Caucasus

“Our region in the Caucasus is suffering from a critical situation and the presence of Zionists in parts of this region is our serious concern. We announce loudly that we will not allow some foreign interfering parties to affect Iran’s relations with its neighbors especially Armenia,” the top Iranian diplomat said in a joint press conference with his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan on Monday in Tehran.

Amirabdollahian stressed that regional crises must be resolved without foreign intervention.

Iran has in recent weeks insisted that the Republic of Azerbaijan must not allow Israeli elements to operate on its soil near Iranian borders.

Amirabdollahian also praised relations with Armenia, adding that the two sides have agreed to maintain their political, economic and tourism relations.

“Trade and operation of the Armenian transit route are among the topics of interest. In reviving the transit routes, we have drawn a project that will be implemented quickly,” the Iranian foreign minister said.

Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan are also at odds over the latter’s restrictions and new taxes on Iranian trucks carrying goods to Armenia.

On Monday, Alireza Sarlak won the silver medal after being defeated 5-3 by US wrestler Thomas Gillman in the 57kg category.

Amir Mohammad Yazdani also lost to his Russian rival Zhagir Shakiyev in the 65kg category to win another silver medal for Iran.

Khatibzadeh: ‘Foreign terrorists on Azeri soil near Iran’s border’

Saeed Khatibzadeh added that Iran’s relations with other countries are not against any other nation as the Islamic Republic’s foreign policy builds on an inclusive view.

The senior diplomat also spoke about the terrorist attack in Kabul. He said, “Terrorism is deplorable in any form. Iran has taken a firm stand on terrorist operations and has condemned them without exception. Afghanistan is tired of terrorism, violence and extremism, and we must all help a secure and stable Afghanistan.”

He also referred to the presence of foreign terrorists on Azerbaijani Republic’s soil near Iran’s border. Khatibzadeh said Iran has received tips about the issue and that it notified the Republic of Azerbaijan. He noted that Iran’s friends have told Tehran that other nations in the region face no threat.

Khatibzadeh added that Iran is still critical of Azerbaijani authorities over their mistreatment of Iranian truck drivers. He also said Baku should not allow the Zionist regime take action or make statements against Iran from inside Azeri soil.

On the Vienna talks, he said the current US administration is sticking by its predecessor’s failed policy of sanctions and this will block efforts to revive the Iran nuclear deal. Khatibzadeh said the US can show good will by unlocking frozen Iranian assets. He added that the nuclear deal has no alternative.

Elsewhere, he talked about the activity of anti-Iran terror groups in Iraq’s Kurdistan region.

Khatibzadeh, said the presence of terror groups in the area is against good neighborly ties with Iraq and international law. The spokesman noted that officials in the Kurdistan region have been notified of Iran’s warning and that those bases have to be dismantled.

Khatibazdeh in other comments turned to Iran talks with Saudi Arabia. He said negotiations are at their best and several rounds of talks have taken place in Baghdad. According to the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, the two sides are trying to start a lasting relationship within the framework of mutual consent. Khatibzadeh did not confirm reports that a delegation from Saudi Arabia visited Tehran to reopen the Saudi embassy.

The senior diplomat also spoke about the Iranian foreign minister’s visit to Beirut. He said Hossein Amirabdollahian’s visit to Lebanon will take place at the end of the week, adding that the formation of the government in Lebanon has been Iran’s long-standing wish.
