Mass anti-Bolsonaro rallies in Brazil, calling for impeachment

Protesters returned to the streets in major cities across Brazil on Saturday, calling for the impeachment of Bolsonaro amid worsening economic conditions, rising unemployment, and hunger in the Covid-wracked country.

Thousands of people gathered in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro — Brazil’s most populous cities — chanting, “Out Bolsonaro, out Bolsonaro” and carrying signs saying, “Bolsonaro Must Leave, Impeachment Now!”

In addition to calling out his mishandling of the Covid-19 pandemic, demonstrators also protested economic woes of ordinary Brazilians from surging inflation and high fuel prices.

In the capital, Brasilia, demonstrators marched to the front of the National Congress, carrying signs protesting the price of gas and food.

Basic food items and gasoline prices are on the rise in Brazil and more than 14 million people are unemployed, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

Meanwhile, Brazil continues to be hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic. Nearly 600,000 Brazilians have died from the virus — the highest death toll in the world after the United States.

Authorities have not released official figures but organizers said protests took place in more than 200 cities across the country, according to Reuters. Protesters also gathered in northern state capitals such as Recife and Belém, in peaceful demonstrations with no incidents reported.

The protests against Bolsonaro marked an attempt by the opposition to show unity, bringing together center-left parties, trade unions and social movements. It was in response to a rally of Bolsonaro supporters held last month.

Center-left politician and third runner-up in the last presidential elections, Ciro Gomes, participated in the Rio de Janeiro rally, as well as opposition leader, congressman Alessandro Molon. In Sao Paulo, second runner-up in 2018, Fernando Haddad, from former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s Workers Party attended.

In the latest poll from Brazil’s largest opinion polling group, the Datafolha Institute, Bolsonaro’s approval rating continues to decline. More than half of Brazilians — 53% — now consider Bolsonaro’s presidency to be bad or awful, the lowest approval rating for the President since he took office in 2019, according to the September 16 Datafolha poll.

Voting intentions for next year’s presidential election show that former president Lula could win in the first round, according to Datafolha.

All Qatari female candidates failed in election

The results of Qatar’s first legislative council election have been announced, with none of the 26 female candidates winning at the polls.

Qatari citizens voted on Saturday in the Gulf Arab state’s first legislative elections for two-thirds of the advisory Shura Council, a process that has stirred domestic debate about electoral inclusion and citizenship.

The Shura Council has legislative authority and approves general state policies and the budget but has no say in the setting of defence, security, economic and investment policy for the small but wealthy gas producer, which bans political parties.

Turnout for the election of 30 members of the 45-seat body was 63.5 percent, the interior ministry announced in a statement on Sunday. The emir will continue to appoint the remaining 15 Council members.

Results showed none of the women who were part of the polls was elected, disappointing candidates who had wanted to lend a voice for women and other Qataris in the country’s political process.

“To have all men is not the vision of Qatar,” said Aisha Hamam al-Jasim, 59, a nursing manager who ran in the capital Doha’s Markhiya district.

She urged Qatari women to start “voicing what they believe in” and vote for strong women candidates in the future.

Several female candidates had been seeking to improve the integration into Qatari society of children of Qatari mothers married to foreigners who, like in other Gulf states, cannot pass their Qatari nationality to their children.

Candidate Al-Maha Al-Majid, a 34-year-old industrial engineer, took part in the election to change mindsets.

“To convince the males [to vote for women], yes, we may have to put in work or extra effort… I’m willing to take this extra effort in order to be in and to convince this society that the women can do so,” she noted.

The elections stirred domestic debate about electoral inclusion and citizenship.

Tribal sensitivities were stirred after some members of a main tribe were ineligible to vote under a law restricting voting to Qataris whose family was present in the country before 1930.

The President made the remarks during a meeting with representatives of the West Bank provinces of Bethlehem and Hebron held at his office in Ramallah.

Israel’s rejection of the two-state solution will “force us to go for other options”, said Abbas to the representatives.

“We will ask for the implementation of the United Nations Security Council’s resolution passed in 1947, or go to the one democratic state on the land of historic Palestine in which the full political and civil rights of the Palestinians are gained,” he added.

The President urged the international community to help the Palestinians get their rights and press Israel to stop its ongoing abuses against the Palestinians.

“The time has come to implement the decisions of international legitimacy. [We’ve had enough] promises and delays by the parties of the international community concerning the ending of the occupation and the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state,” he stated.

The organization’s spokesman Mojtaba Khaledi said the injured suffered trauma due to fall from height.

This comes as Deputy for Fishing and Fishing Ports of the General Department of Fisheries of Sistan and Balouchestan Ataollah Raeisi also said five fishers are missing after two launches sank due to the storm.

Raisei explained that the incident took place after one of the launches was dispatched to tug the other to safety, after it faced a technical problem. He said they were caught in the storm and the two vessels hit a rock and sank.

“16 crew members of the launches plunged into the sea and unfortunately only 11 could make it to the coast and the other 5 are still missing, more than 10 hours after the incident,” he said, noting that search is underway for the missing.

The official added that the tropical storm has also inflicted extensive damage on the fishing ports and storage facilities in Sistan and Balouchestan’s coastal areas.

Tehran to Pursue Vienna Talks Seriously: Iran FM

In an interview with Iranian national TV, Hossein Amirabdollahian said Tehran is determined to pursue the talks.

“We have told other parties that we are serious and we are a man of our word,” he said, while noting that Iran will not tie its foreign policy and the country’s economy to the negotiations and the JCPOA.

“The government has an economic development plan which is moving fast forward,” he noted.

The foreign minister said there is consensus that talks should continue within the framework of the Vienna initiative, adding, “We want to continue the Vienna format.”

He said Iran is now finalizing the make-up of the negotiating team.

“The foreign ministry will pursue the talks, which will be held within the framework of the ministry’s Political Department,” the top diplomat added.

“We are serious in the talks and we will soon return to the negotiations,” he noted.

Amirabdollahian then touched upon the so-called “Plan B” put forward by the United States.

“There is a sort of threat within their comments because they are asking us when we will come to the negotiating table,” he said.

He then urged the US to release $10 billion worth of frozen Iranian oil revenues as a goodwill gesture to prompt Iran to return to the talks soon.

US Source of Destruction, Warmongering in Region: Iran Leader

Ayatollah Khamenei

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei added regional security can be ensured by the armed forces of regional countries.

He said regional armies should not allow foreign militaries to interfere or be present in the region for the sake of their own interests.

Ayatollah Khamenei further said events going on in some countries to the northwest of Iran should be handled to prevent the presence of any foreign forces there.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Leader described the Iranian Armed Forces as bulwark against threats posed by enemies both inside and outside the country.

“Today, organizations of the Armed Forces, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), Police and the Basij Force are, in the true sense of the word, a defense shield against the serious threats of enemies both inside and outside the country,” said Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

“Our Armed Forces take pride in being a bulwark and a robust fortress for the country and nation,” the Leader noted.

“The security of a country is fundamental infrastructure for all of its activities to make progress,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

U.S. COVID deaths reach 700k milestone

The United States has recorded over 700,000 deaths linked to COVID-19 on Friday, according to a count from data compiled by by Reuters.

In its analysis of public health data, the wire service reported that over the last week, the country had seen the average number of more than 2,000 COVID-19 deaths per day.

According to the latest health data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the country has recorded 10,333 deaths related to the coronavirus over the past seven days.

News of the grim milestone in the country comes as the nation has continued to see an average of over 100,000 new cases in the U.S. per day over the past week.

The number has been driven in large part by the highly contagious delta variant, which has been able to penetrate COVID-19 vaccinations and cause breakthrough infections.

The grim milestone also comes even as the U.S. has made the coronavirus vaccine widely available for Americans over the age of 12.

President Joe Biden last month announced a new rule to be carried out through the Labor Department mandating that all businesses with 100 or more employees require vaccination or frequent testing. The move was the latest by the administration to get Americans inoculated against the disease.

Among people aged 12 years and older in the U.S. overall, 76 percent are at least partially vaccinated and 65 percent are fully vaccinated, per CDC data.

Despite the decrease of COVID-19 cases in the nation, some hospitals are still being pushed to the brink of their capacity.

Analyst: Israel’s game plan in Azerbaijan Republic

“The Israelis, who found out that they could not advance the anti-Iranian diplomatic campaign in the nuclear case, are now seeking to thwart Iran’s policy of expanding relations with neighboring countries, a policy that has been formally announced by the new administration in Tehran,” Beheshtipour noted, in an exclusive interview with the Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA).

He said the Iranian Army’s recent military drills in the northwest sent a very clear message to Azeri President Ilham Aliyev who has been “instigated by Tel Aviv”.

Beheshtipour  added, however, that Iran can simultaneously put its military might on display, and deal with current problems through diplomatic channels.

“Let’s not forget that the trilateral meetings of the foreign ministers and presidents of Iran, Azerbaijan and Turkey in recent years have helped resolve many problems in relations,” Beheshtipour said.

The political and international relations expert said by devising new initiatives, Iran must not allow Israel and the United States to sow discord in the region to pave the way for another war.

Iran Demands Urgent UN Action to End Israeli Crimes against Palestinians

“Over the past seven decades, Palestinians have been subject to numerous crimes including mass killings, ethnic cleansing, change in the population composition [of occupied territories], systematic torture, arbitrary murders, detentions and all forms of war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity,” said Seyed Mohammad Sadati, the human rights counselor to the Iranian mission in Geneva.

He was addressing the 48th meeting of the Human Rights Council, during a discussion on the Zionist regime’s crimes against Palestinians.

The official touched on the plight of hundreds of Palestinian children in Israeli jails, saying kids are imprisoned on charges of simply hurling stones at Israeli soldiers.

Sadati said the inability of the international community to force the “Apartheid regime” to respect international law “doubles the heavy responsibility of human rights mechanisms of the UN to take urgent, decisive and effective action to end the crimes against Palestinians”.

The official noted that holding perpetrators of crimes against Palestinians to account should be part of the international push to end the “disaster”.

He added that the US, Europeans, Canada and others who provide Israel with financial, military and political support should also be held to account for encouraging the regime’s crimes and blocking justice.
