Iran registers hundreds of new Covid cases, 28 deaths

COVID in Iran

“A sum of 888 new patients infected with COVID-19 have been identified in the country based on confirmed diagnosis criteria during the past 24 hours,” the Iranian Health Ministry’s Public Relations Center said on Thursday, and added, “469 patients have been hospitalized during the same time span.”

It further announced that the total number of COVID-19 patients has increased to 7,602,409.

“Unfortunately, 28 patients have lost their lives in the past 24 hours, increasing the number of the dead to 145,747,” the ministry noted.

It expressed satisfaction that 7,350,713 coronavirus patients have recovered or been discharged from hospitals so far.

The center went on to say that 854 cases infected with COVID-19 are in critical conditions.

It added that 56,129,497 coronavirus diagnosis tests have so far been carried out across the country.

The health ministry public relations warned that 18 cities are red, 76 cities are orange, 227 cities are yellow, and 127 cities are blue.

Russia names mastermind of killing pro-Putin blogger

Yury Denisov

He came to Russia from Kiev via Latvia in February, provided the explosive device used in the murder, and left Russia in early April right after the crime, the agency said in a statement on Thursday.

According to the FSB, Denisov used an intermediary to deliver the bomb to Darya Trepova, the woman who brought it to the St. Petersburg cafe where Tatarsky was holding a talk on April 2. The bomb went off, killing the intended target and injuring dozens of other people. Denisov left Russia the next day, traveling through Armenia and Turkey, the FSB added.

Before the assassination was carried out, Denisov spent some time in the Moscow Region, where he was collecting intelligence on Tatarsky, the statement read. Russia is in the process of putting out an international arrest warrant on the suspect.

The FSB has released several images of the presumed organizer, including of him apparently passing customs control at the Russian border, his Ukrainian driver’s license, and a redacted contract for the purchase of a used car in Moscow.

The investigators have pinned the bombing on “Ukrainian special services and their agents, including fugitive members of the Russian opposition.” The statement specifically named several associates of jailed opposition figure Alexey Navalny as inspiring Denisov’s accomplice, Trepova, to carry out sabotage in Russia.

They allegedly “repeatedly made statements about the need for sabotage actions in Russia,” the FSB said. It added that Trepova was a supporter of Navalny’s ideas.

Tatarsky, whose real name was Maksim Fomin, was a former Donbass fighter and popular military blogger who advocated a decisive stance regarding the Russian military operation against Ukraine. His talk in St. Petersburg was hosted by a cafe that is connected with Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the private military organization Wagner Group. Kiev has denied any responsibility for the bombing.

Flooding kills one in western Iran; heavy rainfalls expected in many cities

Iran Flood

Seyd Nour Alimardari, a local emergency aid official, said a 50-year-old woman was reported to be missing as floods wreaked havoc on Mehran County in the western Iranian province.

Search teams later found her dead body, he added.

Flooding has inflicted material damage on many affected areas of the province, with more rainfalls forecast for the days to come.

Weather officials had earlier issued warnings for heavy downpours and consequent flooding not just in Ilam, but in many other parts of the country, including the capital, Tehran.

Tehran and other areas in its vicinity have received ‘orange alert’ for flooding, with people advised to avoid riversides.

US says captured Daesh operative in Syria operation

Pentagon

The April 8 raid led to the capture of Daesh attack facilitator Hudayfah al Yemeni and two of his associates, a seizure that “will disrupt the organization’s ability to plot and carry out operations,” US Central Command said in a statement.

No civilians were assessed as killed or injured in the operation, according to CENTCOM.

“Operations against ISIS are important for the security and stability of the region,” command spokesperson Col. Joe Buccino stated in the statement, adding, “ISIS remains a threat to the region and beyond — the group retains the capability to conduct operations in Iraq and Syria with a desire to strike beyond the Middle East, and its vile ideology remains a threat.”

American troops last apprehended an ISIS official in a helicopter raid in eastern Syria in February. That capture was of Batar, an ISIS Syria Province official.

That came days after four US troops and a combat dog were injured in a separate helicopter raid that killed senior ISIS leader Hamza al-Homsi.

Qatar, Bahrain agree to restore diplomatic ties

Qatar and Bahrain

Delegates from the two countries met on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council General Secretariat in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, the countries’ foreign ministries announced in separate statements.

Both sides met to “enhance the Gulf unity and integration according to the GCC Charter”, Qatar’s foreign ministry said in its statement.

Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Secretary-General Ahmed bin Hassan al-Hammadi met with Bahrain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Political Affairs Sheikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa to discuss resolving a feud that dates back to 2017.

That year, Bahrain, along with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, imposed a diplomatic blockade on Qatar over claims it was too close to Iran and backed hardline groups, allegations Doha has always firmly denied.

Back in January, Bahrain’s crown prince and the Qatari emir had a phone call to discuss their differences, in a move that foreshadowed thawing relations between the two.

The four Arab countries had banned Qatari planes and ships from using their airspace and waters, and cut trade links. In 2021, however, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt resumed these ties, although the UAE and Qatar have yet to open their respective embassies.

Bahrain’s dispute with Qatar centred mostly on the latter’s relationship with Iran and issues along their maritime border.

The restoration of ties comes amid a number of other efforts to resolve regional disputes, including between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Iran, China, Russia, Pakistan FMs discussed Afghanistan’s woes in Samarkand

Iran, China, Russia, Pakistan FMs discussed Afghanistan’s woes in Samarkand

Addressing reporters after the quadrilateral meeting, the top Iranian diplomat said he and his opposite numbers discussed the existing concerns and various issues grappling Afghanistan.

Among the topics discussed were spread of terrorism in Afghanistan, crises caused by the US sanctions in place against the country, tough living conditions of Afghan people, and the influx of Afghan refugees to Iran and other neighbors, he said.

Amirabdollahian also stressed the need for a fight against drug trafficking originating from Afghanistan and the responsibility of the ruling government of Taliban in that regard.

He also criticized the acting Taliban government for ridding the Afghan women and girls of the right to education and employment.

Amirabdollahian is in Samarkand to participate in the fourth meeting of the foreign ministers of Afghanistan’s neighboring countries, namely Iran, China, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Russia.

The meeting will focus on the problems of Afghanistan after the Taliban took power in August 2021 in the wake of the chaotic withdrawal of the US military, which wreaked havoc on the nation for more than two decades.

Leaked documents suggest US closely monitoring UN chief over “sympathy toward Russia”

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres

The report emerged as the Kremlin warned on Wednesday that the outlook for extending the deal beyond 18 May was “not so great” because Russia’s own such exports still faced obstacles.

“No deal can stand on one leg: It must stand on two legs,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated, adding, “In this regard, of course, judging by the state of play today, the outlook [for its extension] is not so great.”

The export deal was brokered by the UN and Turkey in July last year to help tackle a global food crisis that UN officials said had been worsened by the Ukraine conflict. Last month, Russia agreed to renew the deal for only about 60 days, half the minimum period.

The Pentagon documents, which appear to describe private conversations between the UN chief and his deputy, show that Guterres, was keen to preserve the deal, even if that meant accommodating Russian interests, the BBC reported. The US documents, seen by the broadcaster, reportedly say, “Guterres emphasised his efforts to improve Russia’s ability to export,” and that he would do this, “even if that involves sanctioned Russian entities or individuals”.

Guterres’ approach was “undermining broader efforts to hold Moscow accountable for its actions in Ukraine”, one document reportedly said.

Another document from February claims Guterres expressed “dismay” at a call by the EU Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, for Europe to produce more weapons and ammunition.

The US has been scrambling to identify how the Pentagon leaks originated, since their emergence on gaming forums. The documents are as yet unverified but the Pentagon has said this week that some of them “appear to contain sensitive and highly classified material”.

Washington is also busy attempting to patch up relations with key allies around the world, including Israel and South Korea, after the leaks suggested the extent to which the US is spying on its allies.

A senior UN official told the BBC that while he would not comment on the documents, the UN was “driven by the need to mitigate the impact of the war on the world’s poorest”, which “means doing what we can to drive down the price of food” and making fertiliser accessible.

To help persuade Russia to allow Ukraine to resume its Black Sea grain exports last year, a separate three-year agreement was also struck in July in which the United Nations agreed to help Russia with its food and fertiliser exports.

Peskov stated that this deal “has not worked and is not working so far”.

Last month, Russia agreed to renew the deal for about 60 days, only if several demands in relation to its own exports were met.

Those include allowing the Russian Agricultural Bank to return to the Swift payment system, allowing Russia to import agricultural machinery, the removal of insurance restrictions, port access for Russian ships and cargo, and an unblocking of the financial activities of Russian fertiliser companies.

Moscow also wants a pipeline that delivers Russian ammonia to a Ukrainian Black Sea port to be restarted.

When asked on Wednesday if any progress had been made on Russia’s demands, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said UN officials were “trying to doggedly move the process forward,” noting that Guterres had little power.

“The secretary general has no authority over Swift. He has no authority over member states that impose unilateral sanctions. He has no authority over insurance companies, shipping companies, he can’t tell them what to do,” he continued.

“We’re trying to herd a whole group of people,” added Dujarric.

Iraq, Oman mediating to restore Iran-Egypt ties: Report

Iran Egypt Flags

A diplomatic source in Cairo has stated that although Egypt welcomes this mediation, especially the Iraqi mediation, as Egypt and Iraq have special relations, Egypt is observing the developments in the region, Almaalomah News reported.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has announced that Tehran welcomes any positive development or progress that would strengthen the relations between Iran and Egypt.

The ministry denied imposing any restrictions on the travel of Egyptian citizens to Iran, and confirmed it welcomes Egyptians travelling to Iran.

Iran and Egypt cut diplomatic ties in 1980 after Cairo admitted the former Shah of Iran and recognized Israel.

Iran’s oil minister arrives Venezuela

Javad Owji

Owji arrived in Venezuela on a visit meant to strengthen energy ties, the South American country’s foreign ministry has announced.

The trip will include visits to the facilities of state oil company PDVSA, as well as meetings with Venezuelan authorities, the foreign ministry added in a statement.

Owji has already met with his Venezuelan counterpart Pedro Tellechea, who also heads PDVSA, a source at the firm told Reuters. He also plans to visit the El Palito refinery on Venezuela’s north-central coast, the source stated.

Tehran has strengthened ties with Caracas in recent years, providing crude and raw materials for Venezuela’s aging refining network, as well as overseeing a project to modernize the largest refining complex in the country.

Baking bread with perfect and healthy flour in Payam Dehkordi’s bakery

Reporter: “A new bakery has been launched here named Payam Dehkordi Bakery, and this gentleman is a famous actor and director.”

Reporter: “Hi, sir! How come you began to work as a baker?”

Payam Dehkordi: “Hello! To be honest, I have not worked for 5 or 6 months. For the time being, I thought about what to do for a living and this was what I liked. So I started working as a baker. I took a course, read a lot of books on that, and thought I should sell healthy bread to people. I chose the perfect flour with minimal yeast and lots of resting, no baking soda or sugar essence. This is what I did so people wouldn’t sour after eating this bread.”

Arefeh Lak, Dehkordi’s wife, is also an artist. She posted a video on Instagram with this caption: “Bread is our new job”.

Dehkordi’s record

Payam Dehkordi was born in 1977 in the city of Shahr-e-Kord. He earned a bachelor’s degree in dramatic literature from Arak’s Azad University and a master’s degree in theater from Tehran University.
