Official: Gaza casualties surpass number of killed during 2014 conflict

Gaza War

“The number of casualties caused by the Israeli occupation forces during the past eight days of their brutal aggression exceeds the number of casualties during the 51-day war in 2014,” Ashraf al-Qidra said in a statement on Sunday.

“This confirms that the crimes committed against our people amount to ethnic cleansing,” he added..

Until now, 2014 had been the deadliest year on record in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with at least 2,251 Palestinians killed in Gaza during 50 days of war, according to data from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Following Hamas’ attack on Israel, the Gaza Strip has been hit by Israeli strikes, resulting in the deaths of 2,329 people, according to the latest figures issued by the Ministry of Health in Gaza on Sunday.

One Palestinian is being killed every five minutes in Gaza as Israeli air strikes pummel the besieged enclave non-stop for the ninth successive day, the health ministry announced.

More than 724 children and 458 women are among 2,239 Palestinians killed so far, with nearly 10,000 more wounded – all in less than nine days.

Gaza’s healthcare system is “taking its last breath amid Israeli massacres” and is due to totally collapse in a matter of hours, the health ministry has warned.

“The world will be horrified by what is about to happen in a couple hours,” a spokesperson for the health ministry told Al Jazeera.

“We call on the world to take immediate action to open a safe humanitarian corridor to bring aid to hospitals,” he stated.

If aid and fuel don’t enter in the next few hours, he added, then hospitals will collapse.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health has also urged residents in the Gaza Strip to go to any hospital in the besieged territory or a branch of the blood bank association to donate blood “immediately”.

Ukraine’s counteroffensive completely failed: Putin

Russia Ukraine War

In a short interview, released by the Rossiya 1 channel on Sunday, Putin was asked to comment on recent statements by some Ukrainian officials, who acknowledged that their operation was stalling and failing to meet Kiev’s schedule.

“As for the counteroffensive that is allegedly stalling – it has failed completely,” the Russian leader replied.

Moscow is aware that Kiev is “still preparing new active offensive operations. We see that. We know that. And we’re reacting to that appropriately,” he stressed.

“As for what’s happening now along the whole length of the contact line, it’s called active defense and our [Russian] forces are improving their positions almost everywhere in this area,” Putin continued.

“I want to thank the Armed Forces, the military leadership and, first of all, our fighters on the frontline for their courage,” the president added.

On Thursday, Kirill Budanov, the head of the Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate, told the Ukrainskaya Pravda newspaper that Kiev’s forces were not only behind schedule in the counteroffensive, but had completely “fallen out of it” after several things did not go as “smoothly” as the Ukrainian authorities had hoped.

When asked to comment on Budanov’s assessment by Ukraine’s Channel 24, Mikhail Podoliak, a senior adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky, said the counteroffensive was “six to nine months behind schedule.” Podoliak blamed Kiev’s Western backers, who, according to him, were too slow in providing Ukraine with the needed weapons.

Ukraine launched its much-hyped counteroffensive with the aim of cutting Russia’s land bridge to Crimea in the first days of summer. However, Kiev has so far only been able to report the capture of a handful of small villages located some distance from the main Russian defense lines. Putin said last week that Ukraine’s casualties since the start of the operation have amounted to “over 90,000 people,” 557 tanks and 1,900 armored vehicles.

Iran FM: If Israel attacks on Gaza does not stop, anything possible

Amirabdollahian Haniyeh

Hossein Amirabdollahian made the comments in a meeting with Ismail Haniyeh, the header of the political bureau of the Palestinian movement of Hamas in the Qatari capital, Doha, late Saturday.

He added the Islamic Republic of Iran will continue its attempts to halt Israeli war crimes.

Amirabdollahian said the Islamic republic will never renounce its principles and values in supporting the Palestinian nation.

The Iranian foreign minister noted that the issue of Palestine remains the most important issue of the Muslim world like before.

“Supporting Palestine is a religious, humanitarian and moral duty, and today, all Muslims, the faithful and freedom-loving people should stand by Palestine and its oppressed people more than ever,” he said.

Referring to the recent operation by the Palestinian groups against Israel, the top Iranian diplomat added, “Al-Aqsa Flood operation showed that Palestine is alive contrary to what some people wrongly believed, and that the trend of normalization of ties [with Israel] by some countries cannot sap the Palestinian nation’s iron will to seek the restoration of their natural, human and legal rights.”

Amirabdollahian further said, “The extent of Zionists’ war crimes against the people of Gaza is great because the blow they have received from the Palestinian nation has been unprecedented.”

Haniyeh, in turn, said the Zionist enemy has committed numerous crimes against the oppressed Palestinian nation for decades, and desecrated the Al-Aqsa Mosque on numerous occasions in recent months. And the Al-Aqsa Flood operation was a natural reaction to these acts and insults.

US sending second carrier strike group, fighter jets to eastern Mediterranean

Israeli Aircraft Carrier

The US warships are not intended to join the fighting in Gaza or take part in Israel’s operations, but the presence of two of the Navy’s most powerful vessels is designed to send a message of deterrence to “Iran and Iranian proxies” in the region.

The movements are “part of our effort to deter hostile actions against Israel or any efforts toward widening this war following Hamas’s attack on Israel,” Austin said in the statement.

The first carrier strike group, led by the USS Gerald R. Ford, arrived off the coast of Israel last week.

Now the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower strike group, which deployed from Norfolk, Virginia, on Friday, is headed to the eastern Mediterranean. The aircraft carrier was initially set to sail for the waters of US European Command.

It is unclear at this point how long the Ford will stay in the region once the Eisenhower carrier strike group arrives, one US defense official told CNN.

The Eisenhower, which is the flagship of the carrier strike group, will be joined by a guided-missile cruiser and two guided-missile destroyers, Austin’s statement added.

The Eisenhower can carry more than 60 aircraft, including F/A-18 fighter jets. The Ford can deploy more than 75 aircraft.

The Joe Biden administration made clear that the carrier, and its accompanying force, are not there to engage in combat activities on behalf of Israel.

“There is no intention or plan to put American troops on the ground in Israel,” said John Kirby, strategic communications coordinator for the National Security Council, on Thursday.

Kirby stressed that the purpose of the increased military presence in the region is to deter others from entering the conflict if they perceive weakness on the part of Israel.

“We take our national security interests very seriously in the region,” he added, noting that the purpose of the bolstered force posture was “to act as a deterrent for any other actor, including Hezbollah, that might think that widening this conflict is a good idea.”

In addition, the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, a rapid reaction force capable of conducting special operations, is making preparations in case it is ordered closer to Israel to bolster the US’ force posture there, multiple US officials tell CNN.

The unit, which is on board the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan, is comprised of more than 2,000 Marines and sailors and would be capable of supporting a large-scale evacuation. Among the mission essential tasks for a Marine Expeditionary Unit are evacuation operations and humanitarian assistance.

No such order has been given yet to the unit, the officials added.

Meanwhile, US Air Forces Central on Saturday announced the deployment of F-15E fighter jets and A-10 ground-attack jets to the region.

The movement of the warplanes from the 494th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron and 354th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron, respectively, “bolster the US posture and enhance air operations throughout the Middle East,” an Air Force statement announced. It did not give specific numbers of warplanes involved.

A US Central Command social media post said the A-10s will join another squadron of the aircraft already in the region. US Defense Secretary Austin’s statement said F-16 fighters have also been deployed to the region.

“By posturing advanced fighters and integrating with joint and coalition forces, we are strengthening our partnerships and reinforcing security in the region,” Lt. Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, 9th Air Force commander, said in a statement.

Defense officials have stated repeatedly in recent days that the Pentagon will be able to flow in additional forces and assets to the region quickly as needed, as Israel continues to fight a war against Hamas.

Israeli military says preparing for the next stages of the war

Israeli Army

The effort involves hundreds of thousands of drafted reservists and will encompass “a wide range of operational offensive plans,” the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement Saturday.

In addition to the “combined and coordinated strikes,” the Israeli Ground Forces and the military’s logistics leadership are preparing IDF troops for an “expanded arena of combat,” the statement added.

Relevant forces have received the equipment they need for combat in recent days, the military noted.

“IDF battalions and soldiers are deployed across the country and are increasing operational readiness for the next stages of the war, with an emphasis on significant ground operations,” the statement read.

Signs have been growing throughout the week that Israel is preparing for a potential ground invasion of Gaza — the densely populated enclave run by Hamas, the Palestinian group that carried out an attacks in Israel last week.

The Israeli military has now mobilized 300,000 reservists for what could be an unprecedented incursion into Gaza.

Also on Saturday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shared a video and images of his visit to the front line near the Gaza border, where he was visiting Israeli soldiers.

“With our fighters in the Gaza envelope, on the front line. We are all ready,” Netanyahu posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Saturday afternoon.

The Gaza envelope refers to the settlements, kibbutzim and areas of Israel within 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) of the border with Gaza.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health said over 2,300 civilians, including more than 700 children and 450 women, have been killed since the conflict broke out one week ago. The health ministry also added that more than 9,000 citizens have been injured in Gaza with varying degrees of injuries sustained.

Iran: Far-reaching consequences, if Israel doesn’t stop Gaza “war crimes”

Gaza War

“If the Israeli apartheid’s war crimes and genocide are not halted immediately, the situation could spiral out of control & ricochet far-reaching consequences,” Iran’s Mission to the UN said.

Earlier on Saturday, Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Amir Abdollahian voiced a similar remarks in a meeting with Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.

“The fact that the Zionist regime martyrs hundreds of Palestinians every day cannot be tolerated, and this war crime, as well as the human blockade of Gaza and the cutoff of water, food, and medicine, must be ended,” Abdollahian said, according to a readout of the meeting.

“If the Zionist regime’s crimes against the Palestinian people and citizens continue, no one can guarantee that the situation in the region will remain the same,” Abdollahian added.

Israel’s military has announced it is “preparing to expand the attack” in Gaza, hinting at a long-expected land incursion into the enclave.

In a statement, the military said it was planning a wide range of offensive operations, including “coordinated attack from the air, sea and land”.

“Various battalions and army forces are deployed throughout Israel in preparation for raising the level of readiness and in preparation for the next stages of the war, especially the large ground operation,” the military added.

Palestinians will never leave Gaza: Hamas chief

Gaza War

Haniyeh made the remarks during a speech on the recent developments in Gaza on Saturday.

“What Israel is doing is with the support of the US and Western countries based on the issue of double standards and lies. The US administration is giving everything it can, all the coverage for this killing,” he said, adding that resistance will not give up the fight for the rights of Palestinians despite the pressure from the West.

Haniyeh stated the Al-Aqsa Storm operation marked “the beginning of the disappearance of the occupation from our land” and that the Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip amounts to “war crimes.”

He further criticized the misinformation, with which the media machine amplifies the Israeli regime’s lies, emphasizing that “resistance fighters, unlike the enemy, do not target civilians, children, or elderly people.”

The top Hamas official hailed the protests across the world against the Israeli regime and in solidarity with the Palestinian people in Gaza and the resistance movement, calling for popular movements worldwide to continue their support for Palestine.

Haniyeh also stated Palestinians will not leave Gaza or the West Bank to migrate to Egypt, following the Israeli army’s order to evacuate Gaza.

“People of Gaza are deeply rooted in Gaza and they will not leave their homeland,” he stressed.

Israel launched the deadly strikes on the coastal area last Saturday after the Palestinian Hamas resistance movement waged a surprise attack, dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, against the occupying regime.

Hamas announced that its operation came in response to Israel’s violations at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East al-Quds and growing Israeli settler violence.

The Western governments, in particular the US, the UK, Germany, and France, have offered “steadfast support” to Israel amid the regime’s incessant bombing of the besieged Gaza Strip over the past few days.

Israeli raid on Syria’s Aleppo airport puts it out of service

Israel Fighter Jet

According to a Syrian military source, the Zionist regime’s new act of aggression targeted the airport “at approximately 11:35 p.m. (20:35 GMT) on Saturday”, the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported.

The source added that the attack came from the direction of the Mediterranean Sea, west of the coastal city of Latakia, leading to material damage and putting the airport out of service.

Israel had targeted the airport last time on Thursday, when it also struck the Damascus International Airport in the country’s capital.

The military source stated, “This new aggression confirms the criminal approach of the Israeli occupation entity, which is clearly embodied in its continuing crimes against the Palestinian people and the massacres it commits against innocent civilians, including women and children.”

The source was referring to the regime’s ongoing war on the Gaza Strip that has so far killed close to 2,300 Palestinians and injured nearly 10,000 others.

The Israeli aggression targeting Syria “is also clear evidence that this terrorist enemy does not respect international laws and norms, and by attacking civilian airports, it proves that it is the origin of terrorism and the greatest supporter of terrorist organizations in the region and Syria in particular”, the report concluded.

Israel has been attacking the positions of Syria’s military and its allies since 2011, when the country found itself in the grip of rampant foreign-backed violence and terrorism.

Tel Aviv’s attacks mostly target the positions of Syria’s allies that have been aiding the country in its uphill battle against foreign-sponsored terror groups.

Damascus has repeatedly complained to the United Nations over the Israeli assaults, urging the world body’s Security Council to take action against Tel Aviv’s crimes. Its demands, however, have fallen on deaf ears.

Iranian film director Dariush Mehrjui and his wife found stabbed to death

Dariush Mehrjoei

Hossein Fazeli, a judiciary official, stated that Mehrjhi and his wife, Vahideh Mohammadifar, were discovered dead with knife wounds in their necks.

Fazeli said the director’s daughter, Mona Mehrjui, found the bodies when she went to visit her father Saturday night at the home in a suburb about 30 kilometers (19 miles) west of the capital, Tehran.

The report added authorities were investigating and gave no speculation on a motive, though the wife had complained about a knife threat on social media in recent weeks.

Mehrjui , 83, was known as cofounder of Iran’s film new wave in the early 1970s that mainly focused on realism. He received many awards, including a Silver Hugo from the Chicago International Film Festival in 1998 and a Golden Seashell at the San Sebastián International Film Festival 1993.

Mehrjui studied in the cinema program at the University of California, Los Angeles in the early 1960s.

Biden says US can support both Israel and Ukraine: “We have capacity to do this and we have an obligation”

President Joe Biden said the US can provide support to Israel and Ukraine while still maintaining, “our overall international defense,” in an interview excerpt aired Sunday morning.

“We have the capacity to do this and we have an obligation to, we are the essential nation,” Biden said on CBS News, paraphrasing a famous quote from former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

“We’re the United States of America for God’s sake, the most powerful nation in the history — not in the world, in the history of the world. The history of the world. We can take care of both of these and still maintain our overall international defense,” Biden added, when asked if the US could take on both wars at the same time.

“And if we don’t, who does?” the president noted.

Pope Francis appeals for humanitarian corridors and release of hostages

Pope Francis called for the establishment of humanitarian corridors in Gaza and for the release of hostages taken by Hamas during an address at St. Peter’s Square on Sunday.

“I’m thinking of the many people who are suffering, the young people and the elderly and I renew my appeal for the release of the prisoners,” the Pope said.

“And please respect the humanitarian situation in Gaza to guarantee humanitarian corridors to help and assist the entire population.”

Pope Francis stated he was following “with great sorrow the situation in Israel and Palestine.”

“Please may there be no more blood spilled — here or in any other place,” he continued, adding, “Wars are always a defeat.”

Netanyahu says Israel will ‘demolish Hamas in Gaza’

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has convened Israel’s expanded emergency cabinet for the first time.

He said that the national unity on display, sent a message at home and abroad as the country gears up to “demolish Hamas” in Gaza.

The meeting, held in military headquarters in Tel Aviv, began with ministers standing for a moment’s silence in memory of some 1,300 Israelis killed in Hamas’ unprecedented attacks.

Sirens wail in Tel Aviv: Report

Israeli media reported sirens wailing in Tel Aviv and surrounding areas.

Hamas’s armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, has announced it fired rockets at the city in response to the killing of civilians.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

There are 50,000 pregnant women in Gaza who are facing a “nightmare: UNFPA

Gaza’s 50,000 pregnant women are facing a “nightmare” situation with the enclave’s healthcare system on the brink of collapse, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) representative for the state of Palestine, Dominic Allen.

“The health care system itself in Gaza is critical. It’s under attack, on the brink of collapse and these pregnant women that we’re seriously concerned about have nowhere to go. They’re facing unthinkable challenges,” Allen said in an interview with CNN on Sunday.

Allen added that about 5,000 of the 50,000 pregnant women are expected to give birth in the coming month, and some of them could face complications.

“Imagine going through that process in those final stages and your last trimester before giving birth, with possible complications, without clothing, without hygiene, support, and not sure about what the next day, next hour, next minute will bring for themselves and for their unborn child,” Allen said.

Stories coming out of hospitals have been “harrowing,” Allen stated.

One midwife at a maternity hospital in Gaza told Allen that since the beginning of the conflict, some midwives have been unable to even reach the maternity ward to provide assistance due to the unsafe environment.

“Humanitarian aid and supplies to Gaza must be allowed through. There must be a humanitarian corridor opened, and humanitarian law abided by. The pregnant women must therefore get access to those lifesaving health services,” Allen added.

Israel seals off Lebanon border

The Israeli army announced it has decided to isolate an area up to four kilometres (2 miles) from the northern border with Lebanon, making it off-limits to public access.

It said that “entering the area is strictly prohibited”.

The move comes after Hezbollah claimed responsibility for firing a missile at an Israeli northern border village, Shtula, killing and injuring several.

World Food Programme running out of supplies in Gaza and is struggling to bring food to the enclave

The World Food Programme (WFP) is running out of reserve stock inside Gaza and is so far unable to get more food into the enclave, according to Corinne Fleischer, a regional director with the United Nations humanitarian organization.

Fleischer said the WFP has enough supplies to feed 1.3 million people for two weeks piled up on the border, ready to go, but that the group cannot yet safely enter Gaza.

“We’re talking to all parties to be able to move in. Unfortunately, we have not received that okay yet. We need to be able to cross the border, we need to have safe supply corridors to go to the shelters to distribute the food,” Fleischer told CNN in an interview from Cairo on Sunday.

“(We) are running out of time … people are really getting hungry.”

The WFP has so far provided 520,000 people in Gaza with canned food, bread and cash.

The group is expected to reach another each 224,000 people on Sunday “despite the absolute chaos and our staff being themselves in shelters with no food, no mattresses, no water and no bathrooms, no electricity,” Fleischer added.

Israeli medics say at least one killed, three injured in attack on Lebanese border

At least one person was killed and three wounded in an Israeli village close to the border with Lebanon, Israel’s national emergency medical service has announced.

The service did not mention the exact location of the attack, but noted the casualties were brought to a medical center in Naharyya, a town about 30 minutes drive from Shtula.

US will evacuate Americans in Israel by sea

The United States government will evacuate its nationals from Israel to Cyprus by sea, the US Embassy in Israel said.

Only US nationals and their immediate family members will be eligible for passage. The ship will depart Haifa, a city in northern Israel, on Monday. The journey is expected to take about 10 to 12 hours.

US citizens and their families will be responsible for arranging their own travel to Haifa and their own accommodations and onward travel from Cyprus, according to the embassy announcement.

Israeli army says it attacked targets in Lebanon

The Israeli army has announced it struck targets in Lebanon in response to an attack towards Shtula, a border town.

The Israeli army radio has also reported the attack in Shtula caused at least four casualties.

IDF killed Hamas commander overnight: Spokesman

An Israel Defense Forces spokesperson told CNN that it had killed another Hamas commander, Billal al-Qedra, who allegedly led the attacks on the Nirim kibbutz near the border.

“This just goes to exemplify that we have the intelligence in order to take out Hamas’ leadership … all the way down to the terrorists that breached, penetrated and butchered our babies in their bedrooms. So, the operation is ongoing,” Lt. Col. Peter Lerner said.

The Israeli Air Force also put out a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Sunday about the commander’s death, claiming IDF and Israel Securities Authority (ISA) “killed the Nukhba commander of the forces in southern Khan Yunis, who was responsible for the Kibbutz Nirim massacre.”

Hamas has not yet commented.

The IDF continues to urge civilians to evacuate to the south of Gaza, Lerner said, to enable the Israeli military to target Hamas.

Hamas has “physically prevented people from moving” and “booby-trapped some of the roads in anticipation” of the move, he claimed.

In preparation for the next stage of conflict, Lerner stated the IDF has recruited “several hundreds of thousands of soldiers and reservists,” with many of them in southern Israel and on the border with Gaza.

“The IDF is targeting the institutions of Hamas because they have subordinated the entire government system to build support, fund, finance and instruct and execute their terrorist activities. So effectively, what we’re doing is dismantling the entire system to begin with,” Lerner added.

Lerner said he “hopes” that the war between Israel and Hamas does not become a larger regional conflict, but he said he recognizes that “hope is not a method.”

“I would caution Hezbollah, look very closely how we are dismantling Hamas. They need to be very, very cautious with regard to Iran,” Lerner continued.

‘Life here does not feel normal’: No safe place in Gaza: Refugee council adviser

Life is a struggle for all Palestinians in Gaza as they face potential blackouts and an “inability for people to get basic necessities,” the communications adviser of the Norwegian Refugee Council told CNN in an interview from Jerusalem Sunday morning.

Shaina Low said that a colleague of hers who had just fled to the south of Gaza is experiencing a shortage of food and difficulty finding other basic needs like water. She added her colleague also had airstrikes near him, despite relocating to the south.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have been advising civilians to evacuate to southern Gaza as military activities continue in the region.

“There is no safe place in Gaza. Some people were killed while trying to make that journey to the south, and others are still facing bombardments, even once they’re relocated to the south,” Low said.

Life in Gaza had previously been challenging, Low added, but the conflict has only made things worse.

“Even before this war, Gaza was facing a humanitarian crisis, [with] the poverty rate over 50% [and] a third of the residents living in extreme poverty,” Low continued.

Some members of Low’s team in her humanitarian organization have evacuated, while others have chosen to stay behind because “they have nowhere to go in the south,” Low said, adding, “They’re worried because there’s a lack of facilities able to accommodate a mass influx of people. Others are having trouble even finding transportation because the size of their families is so large.”

With the lack of resources and diminishing fuel, Low said her team is facing increased difficulty operating.

Low added her neighborhood, which was previously “bustling,” has been “eerily quiet” this past week.

“Now what I hear besides this eerily quietness is often just the sound of warplanes going overhead, heading towards Gaza or surveilling the area. Life here does not feel normal. It feels that people are anticipating the worst.”

Palestinian Water Authority warns Gaza very low on supplies

The Palestinian Water Authority has warned that water supplies in Gaza are running very low because of the destruction of generating capacity.

It said Saturday that before the conflict began, 262,000 cubic meters of water were being drawn from wells daily. Now that figure is 14,000 cubic meters, and there is an urgent need for fuel to provide more water, it said.

The shortages are throughout Gaza, according to the water authority.

There is an urgent need for 14,000 liters of fuel per day, which would provide around 130,000 cubic meters of water, it added.

The United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said Saturday that most people in Gaza now had no access to water.

“As a last resort, people are consuming brackish water from agricultural wells, triggering serious concerns about the spread of waterborne diseases,” it noted.

Blinken says meeting with Saudi Crown Prince was ‘very productive’

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said his meeting in Riyadh with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was “very productive”.

The top American diplomat was answering a shouted question from a Reuters reporter as he returned to the hotel the US delegation was staying at.

A US official stated his meeting with the Kingdom’s de-facto ruler lasted a little under an hour.

Blinken’s meeting came as part of his trip to the Middle East, where he is working with regional allies to prevent the war between Israel and Hamas from spiralling into a bigger conflict, and to help secure the release of hostages kidnapped by the group.

US announces deployment of fighter jets to the Middle East

US Air Forces Central on Saturday announced the deployment of F-15E fighter jets and A-10 ground-attack jets to the Middle East region.

The movement of the warplanes from the 494th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron and 354th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron, respectively, “bolster the US posture and enhance air operations throughout the Middle East,” an Air Force statement read.

It did not specify the number of warplanes involved.

A US Central Command social media post said the A-10s will join another squadron of the aircraft already in the region.

“By posturing advanced fighters and integrating with joint and coalition forces, we are strengthening our partnerships and reinforcing security in the region,” Lt. Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, 9th Air Force commander, stated in a statement.
