Pakistan declares day of mourning after Iranian president’s death

Raisi and Sharif

“Pakistan will observe a day of mourning and the flag will fly at half mast as a mark of respect for President Raisi and his companions and in solidarity with Brotherly Iran,” Shehbaz posted on X, formerly Twitter.

“I along with the government and people of Pakistan extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to the Iranian nation on this terrible loss,” he added.

“The great Iranian nation will overcome this tragedy with customary courage.”

The Pakistani leader hosted Raisi in Islamabad for a three-day visit in April in a bid to mend ties between the neighbours after they traded deadly strikes earlier this year.

Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian have died in a helicopter crash on Sunday. A total of nine people, including a provincial governor, were on board when the aircraft went down in northern Iran’s East Azerbaijan province.

Putin hails Raisi as an ‘outstanding’ leader

“Raisi was an outstanding politician whose entire life was dedicated to serving his homeland,” Putin has stated.

“As a true friend of Russia, he made an invaluable personal contribution to the development of good-neighbourly relations between our countries,” he added.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has also expressed his condolences over the death of President Raisi and his counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian.

“[Moscow] is deeply saddened by the news of the tragic death of Raisi and the head of the Iranian Foreign Ministry in a helicopter crash,” Lavrov said in a statement, adding that Russia “sincerely condoles with the families and friends of the victims, as well as all the friendly people of Iran”.

“We will always remember these outstanding political figures as true patriots of the Islamic Republic who firmly defended the interests of their state and gave their lives in selfless service to their motherland.”

“In Russia, President of Iran Ebrahim Raisi and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran Hossein Amirabdollahian were known as true, reliable friends of our country. Their role in strengthening mutually beneficial Russian-Iranian cooperation and trustful partnership is invaluable,” Lavrov stressed.

Iranian Leader condoles president’s demise, announces five days of national mourning

Ayatollah Khamenei

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei’s message reads, “It was with great sadness and regret that I received the bitter news of the martyrdom-like demise of the Mujahid scholar, the popular, efficient and hardworking president and his entourage.”

The Leader announced five days of national mourning for the death of the Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and the Friday prayers leader of Tabriz Ayatollah Seyyed Mohammad Ali Ale-Hashem.

Invoking Article 131 of the Constitution, the Leader approved Vice President Mohammad Mokhber to serve as acting president and the head of the executive branch and make the preparations to elect a new president within a maximum of fifty days.

The Leader praised the ‘indefatigable’ president, recalling President Raisi was serving the nation and coming back from the inauguration of a dam in northwestern Iran when the tragic crash cut his life short.

UK says does not want ‘direct conflict with Russia’

On Tuesday, Shapps had said Britain has no problem with its weapons being used by Ukraine to strike the peninsula, which joined Russia in 2014 following a referendum. Most countries, however, do not recognize this territory as Russian. Earlier this month, British Foreign Secretary David Cameron also gave the green light to UK-made weapons being deployed to conduct attacks deep inside Russia.

The Russian Foreign Ministry responded by summoning the British ambassador and warning that Moscow reserves the right to retaliate against “any British military facilities and equipment on the territory of Ukraine and beyond”.

Speaking to the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg on Sunday, Shapps explained that the West does not shoot down incoming Russian missiles over Ukraine because “we don’t want to be in a direct conflict with Russia… we don’t intend to go and fight that war”.

In another interview with Sky News on Sunday, the defense secretary stated: “The United Kingdom has been very forward-leaning about the way that our weapons are used, including – and other countries didn’t initially do this but then followed our lead – in Crimea, which we see as an integral part of Ukraine.”

The official also suggested that the reason Germany has for months turned down Ukrainian requests for long-range Taurus missiles is out of concern that Kiev would use these over Crimea. Shapps added that he would like to see Berlin lift this self-imposed, supposed taboo.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused the “American and British handlers of the [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelensky regime” of “not only providing longer-range missiles and heavy weapons, but [also of] giving the green light for their use against Russia”.

“Once again, we would like to unequivocally warn Washington, London, Brussels and other Western capitals, as well as Kiev, which is under their control, that they are playing with fire. Russia will not leave such encroachments on its territory unanswered,” the spokeswoman stressed.

On Friday, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that there had been multiple instances in the past few days that had seen Western-supplied missiles and guided bombs intercepted by Russian air defenses.

Iranian cabinet assures nation running the country ‘will not be dented’ after president’s death

Iranian Government

In a statement released on Monday, after the wreckage of the helicopter carrying the president and his accompanying delegation in northwestern Iran was found, the cabinet members extended their condolences to the Iranian Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and the nation.

They praised President Raisi for his hard work since he assumed office in August 2021, and asserted that they will follow in the footsteps of the president in fulfilling the duties.

The statement reads, “The hard-working and tireless president of the Iranian nation, who only served the great people of Iran in the path of the country’s advancement and progress, stood by his promise and sacrificed his life for the nation.”

The demised Iranian president and his delegation, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, Tabriz Friday prayers leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mohammad Ali Ale-Hashem, Governor of East Azarbaijan Province Malek Rahmati, and top IRGC commander General Seyyed Mehdi Mousavi were all designated as “martyrs in the line of duty”.

The helicopter crashed in the forests after returning from an inauguration ceremony of a dam project on the Aras River on the Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan border.

Biden says Gaza war is ‘a humanitarian crisis’, calls for ‘immediate ceasefire’

“It’s a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, that’s why I’ve called for an immediate ceasefire,” Biden said to applause.

“I know it angers and frustrates many of you including in my family,” he added.

While Biden received applause and cheers, his speech also spurred some students to turn their backs to Biden as his backing of Israel in its war with Hamas riles college graduations across the country.

Biden was largely uninterrupted by protests that have shut down graduations elsewhere, although in addition to students who turned their chairs around to turn their backs to him, one graduate appeared to hold up a Palestinian flag briefly and an audience member stood and turned their back with their fist raised.

Israel continued its brutal offensive on the Gaza Strip despite a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate cease-fire in the enclave.

Nearly 35,400 Palestinians have since been killed, the vast majority of whom have been women and children, and over 79,300 others injured since last October following a Hamas attack.

More than seven months into the Israeli war, vast swathes of Gaza lay in ruins amid a crippling blockade of food, clean water, and medicine.

Israel is accused of “genocide” at the International Court of Justice, which has ordered Tel Aviv to ensure its forces do not commit acts of genocide and take measures to guarantee that humanitarian assistance is provided to civilians in Gaza.

Explainer: Who will run Iran after president’s demise?

The Iranian Constitution clearly states that, “In case of death, dismissal, resignation, absence, or illness lasting longer than two months of the president or when his term in office has ended and a new president has not been elected due to some impediments, or similar other circumstances, his first deputy shall assume, with the approval of the Leader, the powers and functions of the President.”

Therefore, Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will step up to be at the helm as acting president after Raisi’s death.

The Constitution also stipulates that a council, consisting of the speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, or parliament, Mohammad Baqre Qalibaf, head of the Judiciary Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejei, and the first deputy of the president Mokhber, is obliged to arrange for a new president to be elected within a maximum period of fifty days.

“In case of death of the first deputy to the president, or other matters which prevent him to perform his duties or when the President does not have a first deputy, the Leader shall appoint another person in his place,” the Constitution further notes.

Reports: Iranian president, delegation on board crashed helicopter all dead

Rescue teams found the wreckage of the helicopter after over 15 hours of search for the crash site in the adverse weather conditions in East Azarbaijan Province.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, Tabriz Friday prayers leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mohammad Ali Ale-Hashem, Governor of East Azarbaijan Province Malek Rahmati, top IRGC commander General Seyyed Mehdi Mousavi were accompanying President Raisi in the fateful flight.

According to initial reports and video images, the bodies were charred beyond recognition.

Official: Exact location of Iranian President’s helicopter crash identified

He said a signal was received from the helicopter and the mobile phone of one of the crew members at the accident site.

The local IRGC chief noted: “We are now deploying all military forces to the identified region and hope to deliver good news to the people soon.”

He also noted that 30% of the military forces are currently present in the region, indicating that this level of deployment is sufficient for the rescue operation.

Further updates are anticipated as the search progresses.

Meanwhile Turkey has dispatched a night vision helicopter, 32 rescuers and 6 vehicles to the location to help Iranian peers with the search operation.

Red Crescent: Likely crash site of Iranian president’s helicopter identified

After hours of searching, the teams have pinpointed a possible site, and the search continues with further updates expected soon.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi reported that all forces have been mobilized in response to the accident.

“Following the incident, various groups, including the IRGC forces, the army, the police, the Red Crescent, local volunteers, and villagers, have been actively searching for the crash site,” Vahidi stated.

The challenging terrain, steep and forested slopes, heavy rain, and limited visibility have hindered the rescue efforts.

“Unfortunately, the rescue forces have not yet reached the exact location due to these difficult conditions. However, there is a significant presence of rescue personnel in the area, and we remain hopeful that, with the prayers of the people, we will soon reach the accident site,” Vahidi added.
