US to unblock shipment of hundreds of bombs to Israel: Report

Gaza War

According to unnamed US and Israeli officials who spoke with the news site, the administration of US President Joe Biden is willing to send a batch of 500-pound (226kg) bombs that were put on hold in April. At the time, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin cited Israel’s failure to heed warnings that it “shouldn’t launch a major attack into Rafah without accounting for and protecting the civilians that are in that battle space”.

Axios suggested the unfreezing means the US is now less worried that Israel could use those bombs in Gaza, as it seeks to improve relations with its key Middle East ally, which had been strained since the start of the Israel-Hamas war last October. The bombs are reportedly due to be delivered in two weeks, after Israel’s operation in Rafah is over.

US and Israeli officials are still in talks on another part of the shipment that includes 1,800 2,000-pound (900kg) bombs, the report said. Axios also noted that negotiations on releasing arms to Israel were delayed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s public jabs at Washington on the matter.

On Friday, Reuters reported that since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, the US has provided Israel with a total of 14,000 of the 2,000-pound bombs, 6,500 500-pound bombs, 3,000 Hellfire missiles, and other munitions. Washington has also sent $6.5 billion in security assistance since October 7.

The hostilities between Israel and the Gaza-based armed group Hamas have so far claimed the lives of more than 37,000 Palestinians and 1,400 Israelis, while causing unprecedented destruction and a humanitarian crisis in the besieged enclave.

Eurostat says Turkey resumed oil imports from Iran after 4 years

Iran Oil Tanker

Eurostat data cited in a Sunday report by IRNA news agency found that Turkey had imported 576 metric tons (mt) of oil from Iran in March and another 485 mt in April.

Turkey’s last oil shipment from Iran had been reported in August 2020 when the country bowed to US pressure and stopped the imports.

The figures are yet another sign that more countries have stopped complying with US sanctions on Iran and are taking delivery of oil shipments from the country.

Eurostat figures showed that Bulgaria and Poland were the two EU members that had imported oil from Iran this year.

Bulgaria raised its oil imports from Iran in the quarter to March by 113% compared to the same period last year to 314 mt.

Poland’s oil imports from Iran, a first reported in the past two years, was a 19 mt shipment that took place in March.

Georgia, an EU candidate country, imported 544 mt of oil from Iran in the March quarter, down from 974 mt reported in the same quarter last year.

Reports suggest more European countries are willing to ignore US sanctions on Iran and import oil from country now that Tehran is selling record volumes of oil to Asian markets.

Iran’s oil exports reached more than 1.6 million barrels per day (bpd) in some months of this year and in 2023, up from records lows of 0.3 million bpd reported in 2019 when the US toughened its sanctions Tehran.

Syrian, Turkish officials to meet in Iraq for restoration of diplomatic relations after over a decade: Report

Syria

Al-Watan daily newspaper, citing informed sources who asked not to be named, reported that the upcoming meeting will be the first step on the path of a long process of negotiations that would result in political understandings.

The sources added that Ankara has called on Moscow and Baghdad to prepare the ground for Turkish diplomats to sit at the negotiating table with the Syrian side without any third party or members of the press present.

Al-Watan noted that the imitative for Turkey-Syria rapprochement, and restoration of their diplomatic ties has received broad support from Arab states, especially from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, as well as from Russia, China and Iran.

On Friday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated there is no reason for his country not to forge renewed ties with neighboring Syria.

“There is no reason not to establish (relations with Syria),” Erdogan told reporters after Friday prayers in Istanbul.

He emphasized that Ankara has no plans or goals to interfere in Syria’s internal affairs, adding, “Just as we once developed relations between Turkey and Syria, we will act together in the same way again.”

Turkey severed its relations with Syria in March 2012, a year after the Arab country found itself in the grip of rampant and deadly violence waged by foreign-backed militants, including those allegedly supported by Ankara.

The process of normalizing ties between Ankara and Damascus kicked off on December 28, 2022, when the Russian, Syrian and Turkish defense ministers met in Moscow, in what was the highest-level meeting between the two sides since the outbreak of the Syria conflict.

Since 2016, Turkey has conducted three major ground operations against US-backed militants based in northern Syria.

The Turkish government accuses the US-backed Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) militants of bearing ties with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militant group.

Syria considers the Turkish presence on its soil to be illegal, saying it reserves the right to defend its sovereignty against the occupying forces.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has tied rapprochement with Turkey to Ankara’s ending occupation of the northern parts of the Arab country and its support for militant groups wreaking havoc and fighting against the Damascus government.

“Bride of Iran’s lakes” in Khorasan Razavi province refills after year of drought

"Bride of Iran's lakes" in Khorasan Razavi province

Mahdi Allahpour added that thanks to increased rainfall and various execution measures, including the improvement of water transfer channels, the lake has been revived.

Bazangan Lake, considered a national treasure, is often referred to as the “Bride of Iran’s Lakes” due to its natural beauty.

Bazangan has a width of about 500 meters in the wide part, and its maximum depth is about 12 meters.

It is a warm home for migratory waterfowl and shorebirds from near and far lands that take refuge from the bitter cold of winter.

Terrorist elements arrested during Iran presidential vote, plots foiled

Iran presidential election

Majid Mirahmadi said their goal was to intimidate and frighten the public, preventing them from participating in the electoral process.

He added that the terrorists aimed to disrupt the peaceful conduct of the elections and instill fear among the citizens.

Referring to the comprehensive intelligence oversight of security agencies, Mirahmadi said several terrorist elements, who had been sent into the country and were fully prepared to carry out their nefarious attacks, were apprehended before the election began.

He said among their actions was a call for gatherings in 1,000 fields under the guise of supporting a particular candidate. These gatherings were, in fact, intended to celebrate a fabricated victory.

He said reports indicate that instances of vote-buying were minimal, adding the Friday presidential vote was the healthiest election ever held in Iran.

Gazans deprived of adequate shelter, food, medicine, clean water: UN

Gaza War

“Hundreds of thousands of people in #Gaza are deprived of adequate shelter, food, medicine & clean water,” said the agency on X.

It further noted that the number of crossings into the enclave “remains far too limited.”

“The ability to dispose of garbage & treat sewage is severely restricted. Trash continues piling up,” added UNRWA.

Later, in a separate statement, UN aid worker Louise Wateridge explained that people in Gaza “need everything”, adding: “These are very desperate times. […] The only answer to that is to provide more aid.”

Flouting a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate cease-fire, Israel has faced international condemnation amid its continued brutal offensive on Gaza since an Oct. 7, 2023 attack by Hamas.

More than 37,800 Palestinians have since been killed in Gaza, most of them women and children, and more than 86,900 others injured, according to local health authorities.

Over eight months into the Israeli war, vast tracts of Gaza lie in ruins amid a crippling blockade of food, clean water, and medicine.

Human rights organizations have warned that thousands of people in the besieged enclave are facing the risk of famine amid ongoing Israeli devastating onslaught.

North Korea warns west forging ‘Asian version of NATO’

US South Korea militaries

In a statement on Sunday cited by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Pyongyang “strongly denounced” what it called “reckless and provocative military muscle-flexing” by Washington, Tokyo and Seoul, referring specifically to the Freedom Edge military drills.

The exercise, which took place between June 27 and 29, was designed to “promote trilateral interoperability and protect freedom for peace and stability”, and featured a number of warships, including the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier, according to the US Navy.

The North Korean Foreign Ministry claimed the real goal of the US is “world domination” and encirclement of independent states. This policy “has already crossed the red-line and is bringing about a very negative change in the world security environment”, the statement reads.

According to Pyongyang, the Freedom Edge drill was an attempt to cement a military bloc comprising the US, Japan and South Korea, which has committed to “cope with any threat faced by one of the three”. This provision, North Korean officials have argued, is reminiscent of the NATO collective defense clause – which means that an attack on one member must be treated as an attack on all members.

”This means that the US-Japan-ROK [South Korea] relations have taken on the full-fledged appearance of Asian version [of] NATO,” the ministry stressed.

North Korea has long protested against US exercises near the Korean peninsula, seeing them as rehearsals for a possible invasion. Pyongyang has also conducted numerous artillery and missile tests in the area.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has stated the US-led military bloc has no plans to expand into Asia, but stressed that it must respond to the ever-changing security landscape in the region, as it could have serious repercussions far beyond. In 2021, the US, UK, and Australia established a security partnership called AUKUS which saw Washington and London commit to assisting Australia in acquiring nuclear-powered submarines.

Iran protests to Britain after anti-Tehran groups harass voters in the presidential election

Iran Presidential Election

Iran’s chargé d’affaires to London, Ali Matinfar, said on Sunday that the Iranian embassy had sent a message of protest to the UK Foreign Office after hostile elements harassed participants in the first round of the vote on Friday.

The message, he added, also stressed the need to protect the security of Iranians in the upcoming runoff election.

Matinfar further stated that he will pursue the issue in his meetings with British Foreign Office officials this week.

On June 28, thousands of Iranians residing in the UK cast their ballots in 10 polling stations set up in the cities of London, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle, Glasgow and Cardiff for Iran’s presidential election.

At the same time, several hostile elements demonstrated outside polling stations and cursed at voters. The UK police arrested six rioters.

However, the voting process continued without any pause and the voters expressed their strong opposition to moves by the rioters.

More than 24 million people cast their votes in Friday’s election to replace Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who lost his life in a helicopter crash on May 19.

None of the candidates secured the necessary votes to win the race. The top two vote-getters, Masoud Pezeshkian and Saeed Jalili, will advance to the runoff on July 5.

Israeli army officers frustrated over military performance in Gaza war: Report

Israeli Army

“There is something frustrating in all these operations. This is like a Sisyphus complex that pushes a rock to the top of the mountain and then it rolls back down,” Giora Eiland, a retired major general, told Israel’s Channel 13.

“Hamas’s ability to rise again is high. After our withdrawal from a neighborhood for several days or week, they (Hamas’s fighters) resume their activity in that area anew,” he added.

Former head of the army’s operations directorate Israel Ziv also criticized the performance of the Israeli army in Gaza.

“There is no one major victory and there is still no military decisiveness. Rafah will join the list of those areas, such as Shuja’iya and other neighborhoods, where the army had to enter once again to consolidate its achievements.”

“We thought that Rafah, as a lever of pressure, would lead to a deal to release the captives, but the military pressure we had planned did not bring about a deal, at least not yet,” Ziv told Israel’s Channel 12.

He pointed out that Israel is at a standstill in Gaza while there is a major escalation in the north that could lead to war, warning that Hezbollah’s missiles and projectiles pose a real threat to Israel and that the Iranians, the group’s ally, would not stand idly by.

Lieutenant colonel Ivri Elbaz, commander of the Israeli 12th Brigade, stated that dismantling Hamas’ military capabilities in the southern Gaza city of Rafah could take at least two more years.

Elbaz reportedly emphasized the complexity of the mission to eliminate the Hamas military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, describing it as challenging and requiring sustained military pressure over time.

He noted that Hamas conducts guerrilla warfare in Rafah through decentralized groups, which adds to the difficulty of the operations.

In mid-June, Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari said in an interview with Israel’s Channel 13 that “whoever thinks it is possible to destroy Hamas is mistaken”.

In late May, US intelligence sources told Politico only 30 to 35 percent of Hamas fighters have been killed after months of Israel’s military operations against the Palestinian group in the Gaza Strip.
According to Politico, the majority of fighters who were members of the Palestinian movement prior to the October 7 attack are still alive.
In addition, around 65 percent of Hamas’ tunnel infrastructure remains intact, Politico’s sources stated, and thousands of new members are said to have been recruited to the group in recent months.

Israel has been carrying out heavy bombardment across the Gaza Strip since early October 2023.

Nearly 37,800 Palestinians have been killed and nearly the entire population has been displaced. Almost 86,800 people have also been wounded, according to health officials.

The figures exclude tens of thousands of dead who are believed to be buried in the bombed-out ruins of homes, shops, shelters, and other buildings.

The military campaign has turned much of the enclave of 2.3 million people into ruins, leaving most civilians homeless and at risk of famine.

Arab League says removed Hezbollah from terrorist groups

Hezbollah Leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah

Hossam Zaki said on Saturday that the member states “agreed that the label of Hezbollah as a terrorist organization should no longer be employed”.

“In previous Arab League decisions, Hezbollah was designated as a terrorist organization, and this designation was reflected in the resolutions, leading to the severing of communication based on these decisions.”

In March 2016, the Arab League labeled Hezbollah as a “terrorist organization”, accusing the group of “promoting extremism and sectarianism,” and “meddling in the internal affairs of countries”.

The decision was met with objections from Lebanon and Iraq.

Hezbollah is one of the two main parties representing Shia Muslims —the single largest religious community – in Lebanon.

The powerful resistance movement has fought off two Israeli wars against Lebanon in 2000 and 2006. The group forced the regime to retreat in both conflicts.
