A Look at Iranian Newspaper Front Pages on July 10

Iran Newspaper front pages

Newspapers on Sunday widely covered the death of renowned Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami and the possible medical errors that led to his demise. Kiarostami is laid to rest today while the medical error issue is being seriously pursued by the Health Ministry.

The remarks by Atomic Energy Organization of Iran [AEOI] Chief Ali Akbar Salehi about a plot being hatched by the West against Iran’s nuclear program also received huge coverage. He had earlier talked about the US violation of its JCPOA commitments, but his remarks were criticized by President Hassan Rouhani, who said Salehi is neither the foreign ministry nor the Central Bank chief to raise such claims. This time, Salehi said he has been a university professor for 40 years, and even if some ‘dear guys’ may get angry over his remarks, he should talk about the plot being hatched against Iran and the US violation of its commitments as per the nuclear deal.

Newspapers also focused on the ongoing unrest in the US and the protest rallies held by the Black people there, and mostly used the headline ‘civil war’ to refer to the developments.

These issues, as well as several more, are covered in following headlines.

Iranian Diplomat Stresses Indisputable Link between Saudis, MKO Terrorists

Amir Abdollahian

“There’s no doubt about the extensive relations between the Saudi security service and the Munafiqeen (MKO members), particularly in recent years,” the Iranian diplomat said on Saturday.

He also noted that Saudi prince Turki al-Faisal’s speech at the anti-Iranian conference in France reveals that strong support for terrorism through financial and security measures has been always on Riyadh’s agenda.

Saudi Arabia’s “strategic mistake” in employing terrorism in regional developments would cause irreparable damage to both the Arab country and the whole region, he warned.

On Saturday, Turki al-Faisal, former Saudi intelligence chief and diplomat, attended a meeting of the MKO terrorists in Paris, reaffirming Riyadh’s commitment to supporting the anti-Iran group and vowing support for efforts to remove the Islamic Republic.

The MKO – listed as a terrorist organization by much of the international community – fled Iran in 1986 for Iraq and was given a camp by former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

They fought on the side of Saddam during the Iraqi imposed war on Iran (1980-88). They were also involved in the bloody repression of Shiite Muslims in southern Iraq in 1991 and the massacre of Iraqi Kurds.

The notorious group is also responsible for killing thousands of Iranian civilians and officials after the victory of the Islamic revolution in 1979.

More than 17,000 Iranians, many of them civilians, have been killed at the hands of the MKO in different acts of terrorism including bombings in public places, and targeted killings.

Iranian Film Director Kiarostami Laid to Rest

Abbas Kiarostami

A large crowd of mourners attended the funeral of Kiarostami, known as a sophisticated master of cinematic poetry.

Many Iranian cinematic figures and officials along with people from different walks of life took part in the funeral procession.

Kiarostami, the multi-award-winning director, whose 1997 film Taste of Cherry was awarded the Palme d’Or at the Cannes film festival, died at the age of 76 in Paris on July 4.

Many hail Kiarostami as Iran’s greatest filmmaker, whose searching, parable-like dramas of ordinary people and their problems reflected a poetic vision and a philosophical turn of mind.

The deceased had traveled to France to receive treatment for cancer after undergoing surgery in Tehran.

Based on his own will, Kiarostami’s body was buried in Lavasan, northeast of Tehran.

Transfer of Technology Knowhow, a Prerequisite to New Contracts: First VP

In a recent meeting with members of the Headquarters of Resistance Economy, Jahangiri highlighted the need for considering the transfer of technology knowhow in the country’s new contracts with foreign companies.

“As the Leader of Islamic Revolution has firmly emphasized, the transfer of technology knowhow is an essential for the country.”

He further pointed to a manual recently drafted on building links between technology and development of domestic capabilities in international contracts and important national plans. The manual had been outlined in the workgroup of Resistance Economy Headquarters.

“Executive entities should hand in their suggestions and comments to the secretariat of the Headquarters within 10 days,” Jahanigiri urged.

The meeting was also attended by the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, the Minister of Industries, Mines and Trade, the Minister of  Defence, the Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance, the Minister of Cooperatives, Labour and Social Welfare, the Minister of  Economic Affairs and Finance, the Minister of Energy, the Head of Management and Planning Organization, the Head of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization, Vice Presidents for Executive Affairs, Parliamentary Affairs, and Science and Technology, President’s Advisor for Economic Affairs, Governor of the Central Bank, and the Head of IRIB.

Iranians Make Donations in Golrizan out of Altruism

Iranians annually hold Golrizan ceremony in the Muslim holy month of Ramadan

Iran’s incarceration rate comprises a considerable amount of offenders who have committed crimes without intent.

Besides many other charitable ceremonies and gatherings, Iranians annually hold Golrizan ceremony in the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. It is a ceremony to raise funds for prisoners convicted of involuntary crimes.

“This year, 264 Golrizan ceremonies were held in the country,”Iran’s Prisoners Relief Organization reported.

Iran’s Prisoners Relief Organization was established in 1990 in a bid to raise funds for the release of inmates convicted of unintentional crimes. Since then, it has helped release 45,000 prisoners of Diyya [Blood money] and 51,000 prisoners with financial debts.

From the highest-ranking authorities to the most ordinary people contribute to Golrizan ceremonies across the country.

According to a report by Tasnim, Iran’s Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, donated 3000,000,000rials and Iranian President, Hassan Rouhani, gave 2,500,000,000rials to the release of needy prisoners in 2016. Iranian Judiciary Chief Sadeq Amoli Larijani and Iran’s head of Legislative Branch, Ali Larijani, each made donations amounted to 500,000,000rials to Golrizan.

Iranian Cities Donate Funds to Release Inmates of Unintentional Crimes

Mehr reported that in 2016, the Iranian city of Bijar, in Kordestan province, announced it has raised as much funds as 350mrials [over $10,000] in Golrizan charity appeal event for the release of 16 needy inmates of Bijar with unintentional crimes.

“Donations made by philanthropists in the city of Kermanshah amounted to 1,209,000,000rials[nearly $35,000]to pay Diyya to the victims or heirs of the victimsunintentionally harmed by prisoners. The donation is expected to help 8 inmates of Kermanshah be released,” Iran’s Prisoners Relief Organization reported.

In a charitable, humanitarian move, people of Kerman gathered together in 10 different Golrizan ceremonies in Ramadan to make as much donations as 10,260,000,000 rials [nearly $300,000].

Abbas Keshani, the executive director of Iran’s Prisoners Relief Organization pointed to the substantial number of Iranian prisoners released in 2015, and said, “Last year, 8,565 detainees of inadvertent crimes were released, among which278 were female criminals.”

Celebrities Contributions to Golrizan

Several athletes and artists, including ShahabHosseini who recently won an award at Cannes, as well as the Vice-President for Women Affairs,ShahindokhtMowlaverdi, took part in a major charity appeal event in Tehran.

During the event, held on the fourth night of Ramadan, the celebrities raised money for the release of the needy inmates who had committed crimes without intent.

Isfahan’s Mobarakeh Steel Company Contribute to Golrizan Ceremony

Isfahan’s Mobarakeh Steel Company together with several contractors and business partners donated 31bnrials[about $900,000] for releasing Iranian prisoners convicted of involuntary crimes at Golrizan celebration held during Ramadan.

These donations are just a few of many examples. Such traditions are very prevalent among Iranians. The charitable donations for prisoners of unintentional crimes are not limited to the holy month of Ramadan and at different religious occasions, people raise money to help needy inmates.

Attending MKO Terrorists’ Meeting Not ‘Unusual’ for Saudi Regime: Iranian Source

“It was not unusual for the father of the Taliban and Al-Qaeda and partner of the Zionists (Riyadh regime) to show its government’s frustration in a new example of political abomination and stupidity by participating in a meeting of bankrupt terrorist mercenaries (MKO),” the source told reporters in Tehran on Saturday.

The Saudis’ move to resort to the terrorists and support them proves the fact that as demonstrated in Iraq, Yemen and Syria, terrorists are their instruments for advancing their political objectives against Muslim countries in the region, the source added.

A number of Saudi officials and supporters of MKO, including Prince Turki bin Faisal Al Saud, attended the gathering of the terrorists in Paris on Saturday and made anti-Tehran remarks.

Two Iranian Cities Gain World Fame for Gems and Pottery

Iran Pottery

Bahman Namvar Motlaq said on Saturday, July 9, that the jury panel of the World Crafts Council – Asia Pacific Region (WCC-APR) visited Mashhad and Lalejin in April and presented their assessment to senior experts of the council.

He added that the designation of the two cities comes after the presidents of the four regions of Europe, Latin America, North America and Africa announced their final verdicts, the WCC-APR president Ghada Hijjawi-Qaddumi, Press TV reported.

Iranian Handicrafts-LalejinThe Iranian official noted that the global designation of Mashhad and Lalejin would have an important impact on developing the art of handicraft in the country and help improve its economy and culture.

The Iranian official said a commemoration ceremony would be held in the two cities in August.

Namvar Motlaq said the global recognition of Mashhad and Lalejin has helped Iran overtake India and China as its major rivals in having the most nominations for world cities as Isfahan and Tabriz had already won world cities of handicrafts and hand-woven carpets earlier in 2015.

Last year, WCC declared Isfahan and Tabriz as the world cities of handicraft and carpet weaving.

The designation of two more cities as the world crafts cities would have a great impact on the market of Iranian handicraft worldwide, he said.

Iran- Mashhad Gems“The handicrafts would be great representative of traditional culture of the region in international stage,” he added.

Precious gemstones like agates and turquoise are found in the northeastern city of Mashhad. The city is also well-known for intricately-designed silver jeweller studded with rubies and emeralds.

Meanwhile, the western city of Lalejin is one of Iran’s important centres for the production of pottery and ceramics, Tehran Times reported.

Conflicting Reports about Championship of Assad’s Daughter in Tehran Horse-Riding Race

Assad Doughter

Mashregh News quoted Mohammad Kazemian, the Secretary of Iran’s Horse-Riding Federation, as saying that the Syrian President’s daughter did participate in the competition and even claimed the title.

“Apart from political issues, I should say that she is a good rider and can be a role model for Iranian teenagers,” Kazemian said, hailing her high skill and good training in spite of her age.

“Syrians participated in the competition with great athletes. Assad’s daughter was a smart rider, and was highly-skilled in performing different moves. She rode very well and bravely.”

“Syrian embassy and other related organizations carried out the paperwork for her presence in Tehran, and we just cooperated with them in the athletic aspect,” he went on to say.

Assaad DoughterMashregh further referred to Zain al-Sham Bashar as the only daughter of the Syrian President, and described her as a skilled horse-rider, whose horse-riding photos and championships can be found in the Internet.

However, Fars published a statement by the Public Relations Department of Iran’s Horse-Riding Federation, which dismissed the media reports.

“Horse-riding federations of Georgia, Hong Kong, Syria, Lebanon, Chinese Taipei, Singapore, Thailand, and India introduced their athletes to Iran’s horse-riding federation based on official protocols, and their teenage and young riders took part in these competitions according to the rules and regulations,” the statement said.

“There were reports about the presence of Syrian President’s children in this competition. We categorically dismiss the claims, and stress that his children did not take part in the competition,” it added.

MP Criticizes Government’s Decision to Cut Defence Budget

Mojtaba Zonnouri

According to a report by ICANA, as translated by IFP, Mojtaba Zonnouri, a member of Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, described the government’s proposal to reduce the defence budget as an act of imprudence.

Zonnouri, who represents Qom province in the Parliament, pointed to the recent culminating threats hovering over the country, and said, “The government’s proposal for a cut in the country’s defence budget can have detrimental effects.”

“Under the current circumstances, I believe the country’s defence budget should not be reduced. Rather, we should reinforce and increase our military and defence budget.”

“The government’s bill will be definitely rejected in Majlis [Iran’s Parliament],” he went on to say.

Saudi Prince Raises Ante in Hostility with Iran by Attending Terrorist Gathering

Turki al-Faisal

Prince Turki al-Faisal’s appearance and his nearly 30-minute address to the gathering of the Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) in Paris on Saturday go in line with Riyadh’s long history of supporting Takfiri terrorists.

The MKO is the most hated terrorist group among the Iranians because of its dark history of assassinations and bombings and for siding with the former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in his eight-year war against Iran in the 1980s.

Faisal’s overt pronouncement of support for the terrorist group marks a turning point in Saudi Arabia’s hostility toward Iran and the kingdom’s lack of concern about the sensitivities of the Iranians.

Under the new Saudi rulers, Riyadh has adopted an aggressive policy toward Iran and its allies which are fighting a menacing Takfiri militancy in Iraq, Syria and elsewhere.

Takfirism, which is the trademark of many terrorist groups operating in the region, is largely influenced by Wahhabism, the radical ideology dominating Saudi Arabia and freely preached by Saudi clerics.

Under Faisal, Saudi intelligence created al-Qaeda in Afghanistan jointly with US and Pakistani spy agencies. He has acknowledged meeting al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and Taliban leader Mullah Omar.

In 2002, Prince Turki was named in a multibillion-dollar lawsuit by the families of September 11 victims. A court affidavit filed in 2015 claimed that convicted al-Qaeda plotter Zacarias Moussaoui served as a courier between bin Laden and Faisal.

Saudi Arabia is widely believed to have been providing funds and weapons to militants fighting to topple the Syrian and Iraqi governments.

Under the pretext of fighting Iranian influence, the kingdom has also been waging a destructive war on Yemen which has claimed thousands of innocent lives so far.

Faisal’s participation in the MKO gathering and his unequivocal proclamations of support for a group which is internationally listed as a terrorist organization takes the kingdom’s irresponsible policies and its insolent attitude toward diplomatic norms to a new height.

Reacting to the development, an official at the Iranian Foreign Ministry said the kingdom is using terrorists as “a tool to advance its objectives against Muslim countries.”

“It was not unlikely from the godfather of Taliban and al-Qaeda as well as the partner of the Zionists to show their desperation with a new instance of obscenity and political idiocy through participation at the gathering of bankrupt mercenary terrorists,” the official said.

“The desperation of the Saudis and their resort to registered terrorists in this showdown indicates that for them, as they have shown in Iraq, Syria and Yemen, terrorism and terrorists are a tool to advance their objectives against Muslim countries in the region,” he added.

In his speech, Faisal pledged to stand by the MKO in what he described as the terrorist outfit’s efforts against the Iranian establishment.

Faisal, who currently chairs the Board of the King Faisal Centre for Research and Islamic Studies, also made outrageous remarks against Iran’s revolutionary leaders.

He described MKO terrorists as a hope for “freeing Iran of oppression.”

The terrorist group, which has built a cult-like following, is known for brutal elimination of its own members over dissent. It also keeps tight tabs on social media where Internet and cell-phones are non-existent among its inner circles.

Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, has a dismal record for human rights abuses where dissent is not tolerated. Shia Muslims are a regular target of crackdown and discrimination and women’s rights in the kingdom are among the most restricted in the world.

In his speech, the Saudi prince referred to the notorious terror group’s current head Maryam Rajavi, who was in the audience, as “Mrs. Maryam Rajavi and your late husband Massoud Rajavi.”

The former MKO leader has made no public appearance since 2003, raising speculations that he might be dead even though the terrorist outfit does not confirm that.

The MKO has carried out numerous terrorist attacks against Iranian civilians and government officials over the past three decades. Out of the nearly 17,000 Iranians killed in terrorist attacks since the victory of Iran’s Islamic Revolution, about 12,000 have fallen victim to MKO’s acts of terror.

Washington and the European Union have removed the MKO from their list of terrorist organizations and the group currently enjoys freedom of movement and activity in the US and Europe, including regular meetings with American and European politicians.
