Zarif Rejects US Claim of Iran Arms Shipment to Yemen

Mohammad Javad Zarif

Mohammad Javad Zarif was reacting to comments by US Secretary of State John Kerry who accused Tehran on Thursday of transferring “missiles and other sophisticated weapons” to “rebels” in Yemen.

“By such statements, the US administration has implicated itself in the Saudi regime’s war crimes and inhumane and infanticidal atrocities against the innocent and oppressed Yemeni people. It should undoubtedly accept responsibility and be answerable for all the inhuman crimes,” Zarif said.

Kerry made the accusations during a visit to Saudi Arabia, which has been waging a brutal military campaign against Yemen for more than year.

The top US diplomat was in Jeddah where UN special envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed as well as representatives from Britain and Saudi Arabia’s Persian Gulf allies in the war had gathered to discuss the conflict.

“Mr. Kerry knows well better than anyone that the Saudi government has, over the past year and a half, been invariably and sternly frustrating all the efforts taken to bring about ceasefire in Yemen,” Zarif said.

In his remarks, Kerry said “the threat potentially posed by the shipment of missiles and other sophisticated weapons into Yemen from Iran extends well beyond Yemen and is not a threat just to Saudi Arabia and… the region.”

“It is a threat to the United States and it cannot continue,” he added.

Zarif also dismissed Kerry’s claims of Iranian threat to the region and the US, saying the Islamic Republic’s “military might poses no threat to any country and simply serves defensive purposes.”

“What threatens the region and the world today is the ideological, financial and political bases of Takfiri terrorism in the world, whose source and causes Mr. Kerry should know well.”

The Saudi military has been pounding Yemen since March 2015 to undermine Yemen’s Houthi Ansarullah movement and to restore power to the former president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, a staunch ally of Riyadh.

Nearly 10,000 people, most of them civilians, have been killed in Riyadh’s military aggression which lacks any international mandate.

The US maintains strong military ties with Riyadh, which had Washington approve a USD-1.29-billion rearming program for the kingdom last November.

“Without a doubt, the US administration would further discredit its policies in the region through its support and ignorance and inattention to the facts on the ground,” said Zarif.

“It is high time the US administration learned from its glaring past mistakes in Syria and Iraq and open its eyes to realities,” he added.

On Thursday, the UN human rights office said the Saudi military is using cluster bombs against residential areas in Yemen in violation of international law, blaming the Riyadh regime for most of the civilian casualties in its impoverished southern neighbor.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) criticized the United States in May for selling cluster munitions to Saudi Arabia, saying the kingdom had used various types of US-made cluster munitions in its war against Yemen despite evidence of mounting civilian casualties.

Iran to Allow Russian Jets Fly from Airbase Again, If Necessary: Shamkhani

Shamkhani

In a recent interview with the RT Arabic, Shamkhani pointed to an operation against terrorists in Syria, in which Russian bomber jets used Nojeh Airbase in Iran’s western province of Hamedan for flying to Syria, saying that the operation has ended for now.

The strategic relations between Iran and Russia have not ended, but the military operation was naturally limited and finished, he said.

As this case of military cooperation between Iran and Russia has been based on the developments in Syria, the resumption of such cooperation in the future also hinges on the developments in the Arab country.

Eelier on Monday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi had said that Russian military jets’ use of the airbase has ended for the time being.

Qassemi noted that Tehran and Moscow had agreed to publicize such cooperation after the aerial operations.

On Saturday, Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan said the Russian aircraft fly to the Iranian airbase to be either refueled or get reloaded, noting that they use the base for more effective operation against terrorist groups in Syria.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.

Meanwhile, Russia’s aerial support for the Syrian forces since September 2015 has given fresh impetus to the fight against the foreign-backed terrorists.

Iran has also remained a close ally of Syria and supports its legitimate government in the face of militancy.

Traditional Wedding Ceremony in Northeastern Iranian Tribe

Traditional Wedding Ceremony

The wedding ceremonies of Kurmanj nomads are always full of colours and happiness, and these are part of their intangible heritage.

Every November, because of the weather conditions, these nomads move from Maneh and Samalqan County in North Khorasan province to Maraveh Tappeh in Golestan province, both in northeastern Iran.

Here are IRNA’s photos of the traditional ceremonies of Kurmanj nomads:

The majority of newspapers on Thursday covered the remarks made by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in a meeting with President Hassan Rouhani and his cabinet members. Almost all reformist newspapers, and even a moderate one Ettela’at, dedicated their headline to the Leader’s comments against oppression and dogmatism in the field of culture, which seemed to be in reaction to the recent cancellation of concerts in Mashhad, northeastern Iran. However, conservative media covered the priorities outlined by the Leader for Rouhani’s government, particularly the advice on refraining from getting involved in electoral campaigns for next year’s presidential elections.

The papers also highlighted the green light given by the Parliament to the government for receiving a $5bn loan from Russia.

The 3 oil tankers missing in the time of ex-President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also received great criticisms, especially by reformist media outlets.

Turkey’s recent moves and operations inside the Syrian territory is also a top story today.

Iranian Forces on Constant Patrol in Persian Gulf: DM

General Dehghan

Speaking at a press conference in the central city of Isfahan on Thursday, August 25, the Minister underscored that the Iranian naval forces constantly monitor developments in the Persian Gulf and keep a close watch on the movements of foreign vessels to ensure maritime security.

Such control and naval patrols “naturally take place in Iran’s own territorial waters,” he stressed.

The Iranian forces warn any foreign vessel that enters the country’s waters and take action if the intrusion is deemed aggressive, Dehqan concluded, as reported by Tasnim and edited by IFP.

He made the comments after a US defence official said four vessels of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) have “harassed” a US warship on Tuesday near the Strait of Hormuz.

Reuters quoted the official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, as saying that two of the Iranian vessels came within 300 yards (275 meters) of the USS Nitze in an incident that was “unsafe and unprofessional”.

Back in January, the IRGC Navy captured 10 US Navy sailors inside Iran’s territorial waters in the Persian Gulf, but released them shortly afterwards following an apology and after technical and operational investigations indicated that the intrusion into Iranian territorial waters was “unintentional”.

In remarks in June, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei underlined that security of the Persian Gulf region comes within the purview of the regional countries alone, and dismissed the US claim of seeking security in the region.

“The Persian Gulf security relates to the countries of the region which have common interests, and not to the US. So, security of the Persian Gulf region should be provided by the countries of this region itself,” the Leader said.

Iran Extends Condolences to Italy over Deadly Quake

Iran Blasts Saudi Airstrike on Civilians in Yemen

Qassemi on Wednesday evening voiced Iran’s grief and offered its condolences to Italy over the quake.

He also wished a speedy recovery for its victims, as reported by Iranian media outlets.

The strong earthquake struck a mountainous stretch of central Italy early Wednesday, killing at least 247 people and trapping scores under debris.

The tremor, which had a preliminary magnitude of 6.2, struck at 3:36 a.m., about 6.5 miles southeast of the town of Norcia in the Umbria region, followed by about 200 aftershocks over the next several hours.

Towns in three regions -Umbria, Lazio and Marche- have been devastated by the quake.

Iran’s FM, Ecuador’s President Meet in Quito

Zarif and Ecuador’s President

In the meeting, held on Wednesday, the two officials explored avenues for expanding economic relations between Iran and Ecuador in oil and energy industry, banking services, shipping industry and agriculture.

They also discussed mutual cooperation at the regional and international levels.

Heading a 120-strong delegation of Iranian business people and economic officials, Zarif arrived in Ecuador on Wednesday in the third leg of his six-nation tour of Latin America, after visiting Cuba and Nicaragua.

Zarif and his entourage left Ecuador to Chile early Thursday, and are scheduled to visit Bolivia and Venezuela afterwards.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry has said the tour of Latin America signifies Tehran’s plans to boost non-oil exports.

Leader Lauds Iran’s Robust Security in A Volatile Region

Leader and Government

“Thank God and through the appreciated efforts and endeavors of the military and security forces, the country enjoys a strong security shield while regional countries are filled with incidents and insecurity,” Ayatollah Khamenei said in a meeting in Tehran with President Hassan Rouhani and his cabinet members on Wednesday.

The Leader then pointed to the components of the country’s exemplary security, saying that “people’s revolutionary and religious spirit” forms one of the defense barriers of the country that must never be undermined.

The “military and security structures” and “defense gear and equipment”make up other components of Iran’s security, Imam Khamenei noted, adding,“The enemy is concerned about the country’s defense and missile power and, therefore, boosting the defense power should be helped and supported.”

Elsewhere, the Leader referred to foreign policy, which is one of the priorities of President Rouhani’s administration, and said that the country’s diplomatic power should be distributed in the world in an appropriate and balanced way.

Ayatollah Khamenei underlined that Asia, Africa and Latin America should have their fair share in Iran’s foreign policy.

The Leader also highlighted the importance of using the diplomatic capacity for economic development.

Imam Khamenei further described “apparent behaviors” in the field of diplomacy as unreliable, saying that the experience of the United States’ lack of commitment to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)- a lasting nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers- taught the country‌ that it cannot trust the promises of any US administration and that it must not take a concrete step in return for their pledges.

While the JCPOA came into force in January, some Iranian officials complain about the US failure to fully implement the accord.

Back in March, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said Americans have yet to fulfill what they were supposed to do as per the nuclear deal.

Iran still has problems in its banking transactions or in restoring its frozen assets, because Western countries and those involved in such processes are afraid of Americans, the Leader said at the time, criticizing the US for its moves to prevent Iran from taking advantage of the sanctions removal.
