President Rouhani Hopes for Closer Iran-Malaysia Ties

Hassan Rouhani

In separate messages to Malaysian King Abdul Halim of Kedah and Prime Minister Najib Razak on Wednesday, President Rouhani felicitated the Malaysian national day and expressed the hope that bilateral relations between Tehran and Kuala Lumpur would develop in the future.

“It is my pleasure that relations between Iran and Malaysia have been growing in the atmosphere created after the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),” he said in his message to the Malaysian premier.

He further hoped that cooperation between the two friendly countries would be boosted more than ever in light of the “political will” of the Iranian and Malaysian officials.

Hari Merdeka is a national day of Malaysia, which marks the independence of the Federation of Malaya from British colonial rule in 1957, and is celebrated on 31 August each year.

The recent allegations about a scandal in Tehran Municipality remained a top story in many newspapers on Wednesday.

The deployment of S-300 missile defence system and the reactions to the move were also covered by Iranian media today.

The Turkish military invasion of Syrian territories as well as the operations to retake different cities and towns in Yemen, Iraq, and Syria also received good coverage.

Newspapers also covered the premiere of Asghar Farhadi’s latest film, the Salesman, in Iranian cinemas, which started on Wednesday morning and the tickets of the first three days were all sold out.

Iran’s Zarif to Attend UN General Assembly in September: Deputy FM

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for American and European Affairs Majid Takht Ravanchi on Wednesday said that according to schedule, the foreign minister will pay a trip to New York in coming days to participate in the UN General Assembly and hold talks with his counterparts from other countries.

As for President Hassan Rouhani’s possible trip to New York to attend the annual event, Takht Ravanchi said it has not been determined yet and will be decided on later.

The 71st Regular Session of the UN General Assembly will begin at the UN headquarters on Tuesday, September 13, 2016.

Takht Ravanchi further pointed to Zarif’s recent tour of Latin America and noted that members of a large economic delegation accompanying the top diplomat during his visits held talks with their counterparts from the Latin American countries on enhancement of cooperation.

He went on to describe the tour as fruitful.

Heading a 120-strong delegation of business people and economic officials, Zarif visited Cuba, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Chile, Bolivia and Venezuela in the recent tour.

His trip to Chile marked the first-ever visit to the South American nation by an Iranian foreign minister.

According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, the tour of Latin America was part of Tehran’s plans to boost non-oil exports.

Iranian Mobile Museum Moving from One Continent to Another

Iranian Mobile Museum

Sousan Nikzat, the curator of Ambassadors of Peace Mobile Museum, has shared her experiences of travelling to five African countries and running the mobile museum there.

Here is IFP’s translation of a report by ISNA about the Ambassadors of Peace Mobile Museum; a typical museum which has provided residents of five African countries with the opportunity to visit an international museum without leaving their countries.

Iranian Mobile Museum“We managed to obtain the permission for the establishment of the museum in 2008, and since I live in Mashhad [in northeast of Iran], we opened the museum there,” Nikzat said, adding that the innovative idea of a mobile museum came to her later.

Addressing the National Museum of Iran, she quoted the motto of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), which says, “If someone cannot go to the museum, we take the museum to them.”

Nikzat explained that the mobile museum started off by traveling within Iranian borders in an effort to embody the motto.

Iranian Mobile Museum 75

She referred to the sporadic success of the museum at different intervals and said, “Once the museum was in a stable condition, we developed the network of Fellow Travellers of Peace so that those who are solicitous about the children, peace and museum, irrespective of their cultural background, could have the chance to promulgate their messages of peace throughout the world by donating a suitcase of their indigenous cultural dolls to this museum.”

Nikzat, who is an ICOM member now, further gave details about her recent 40-day travel to five African countries, namely the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Niger, Guinea, and Nigeria.

“In each of these countries we set up our mobile museum with suitcases of Iranian dolls and asked the African children to join us in our workshops,” she noted, adding that the children would make their handmade dolls which were supposed to be the reminiscent of their tribes and culture.”

Nikzad stressed that the dolls were tagged with children’s names and added to the mobile museum treasury.

Iranian Mobile Museum 77“We paid a visit to the health clinics for African children to put into practice the concept of peace by donating food to the indigent children suffering from malnutrition,” Nikzad said.

“Through these trips, we tried to promote the idea of thinking beyond borders; we announced that, born black or white, equal are all the children living on earth.”

She pointed to the meetings held in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for further arrangements with other countries and said, “During the meetings, we inked a few Memorandums of Understanding with their museums. In a bid to show that Iran has always been an advocate of peace, we raised a suggestion, which was welcomed by Nigeria, to establish the museum of peace in that country and name a square there as Iranian Peace.”

According to her, the establishment of this museum would open up an opportunity, not only to promote culture, but also to launch educational centres for children and carry out desired projects.

She described the interaction with African countries as laudable and expressed hope for the maintenance of such cooperation, arguing that “we can use it to achieve our goal which is the dissemination of peace culture.”

Iranian Mobile Museum 74“Notwithstanding the abject condition of poverty-stricken Africa that deeply affects every passer-by, the empathy among children and their teachers in doll-making and painting workshops were noticeable,” Nikzat stressed.

She pointed to the exchange of Iranian dolls which were made out of spoons and forks with the dolls made by African and added, “We have plans to display the dolls that have been donated to our museum in early October.”

Iranian Cheetahs’ Population Declining Rapidly: ICS

Iranian-cheetah2

“The situation is very critical,” Morteza Islami said as cited by the Guardian on Tuesday.

“We have been monitoring the situation closely in the past five years and the population of female Asiatic cheetahs has significantly dropped.”

Tuesday was Iran’s national cheetah day, marking an event more than two decades ago when a cub named Marita survived an attack by a group of villagers in which his mother and two siblings were killed. Marita became a national symbol.

Iranian cheetahs are a subspecies of the fastest animal on earth and classified as critically endangered, with fewer than 40 believed to remain in Iran.

“In some of our other environmental areas we haven’t had any reports of female cheetahs for at least two years now, including in an area near the city of Yazd where only four male cheetahs survive,” Eslami said.

Two Asiatic cheetahs – a male, Koushki, and a female, Delbar – are held in captivity at Tehran’s Pardisan Park research centre. They have not yet successfully mated.

Eslami said the fate of Asiatic cheetahs was important because two other big cats, the Caspian tiger and Persian lion, had become extinct in Iran. The Caspian tiger is extinct worldwide; a small population of Persian lions remains in India.

Deceased Father of Boeing 747 Praises Iran’s Technical Capabilities

joe sutter

Joe Sutter, the father of Boeing 747 plane, died today, August 31, at the age of 95. Earlier in January 2015, he had written a letter to the Iran Air officials, which is now published by Mizan news agency.

In this letter, Sutter thanks Iran for ‘taking good care’ of the plane he developed a long time ago, and praises the country’s capabilities and beauty, which he experienced during his stay in Tehran.

Here’s the full text of Sutter’s letter:

January 13, 2015

To:

Mr. Farhad Parvaresh, Chairman and Managing Director, Iran Air

Mr. A. Mohammadi Rad, Deputy Managing Director, Engineering and Maintenance

Mr. Changiz Afshid, Director General, Aircraft Engineering

Dear Mr. Parvaresh, Mr. Rad and Mr. Afshid,

I cannot tell you how pleased I was to find out that Iran Air is still having great success in flying your 747SP and that you still have great pride in the airplane, as I still carry around a tremendous amount of pride in having led the development of an airplane that has lasted so long and has meant so much to so many. I and my team designed the first Boeing 747 to be a revolutionary aviation pioneer that would connect the world as the first wide body jumbo jet, and it was soon after named the “Queen of the Skies”. Since then it has gone through several iterations, including the fantastic 747SP that Iran Air still flies today, and the most current form of the 747-8, the Intercontinental, which is truly a marvel as well with its new wings, new engines, longer body and greater energy efficiencies.

I remember well my time with Iran Air back in the day when I and my team were working with General Hademi and the Iran Air team to get the new Iran Air 747SP off to a strong start. I was heavily involved with the initial contacts into Iran Air, and was part of the team that convinced your airline that the 747SP was the perfect fit for Iran Air, given the airplane’s particular capacity that would help Iran Air run its European and Transatlantic service and really establish Iran Air in the international air travel arena. I worked closely with your engineers, pilots and management, and I will always remember the relationships that I formed there. I still even remember the house that I stayed in during my visits to your gorgeous city, Tehran. You have such a beautiful country, full of fantastic history and with gracious people that became my good friends in working what I still remember as a big, cooperative Boeing/Iran Air effort.

I wish that I could have been on your November 23rd, 2014 special flight over Iran of the last operative 747SP in the world. I would have had great time with the German passengers that were on that flight. I would think that the German passengers on that flight would be most excited to fly on a 747SP since their own airline, Lufthansa, was the launch customer for the new 747-8 Intercontinental and have been enjoying much success with it.

Iran Air is still very special to me and my history with the 747. I congratulate you on your momentous flight and I thank you for taking such good care of my airplane over the years.

My Best Wishes,

Joe Sutter, Father of the 747

Iran Urges Turkey to Halt Military Action in Syria

Iran Blasts Saudi Airstrike on Civilians in Yemen

“Escalation of clashes in northern Syria will result in the killing of more innocent people and civilians,” Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said on Tuesday, reacting to Turkey’s move to launch a major military intervention in Syria by sending tanks and warplanes across the border in the so-called Euphrates Shield operation.

Ankara says the purpose of the military involvement is to dislodge Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group from Jarablus and to contain the expansion of Kurdish fighters in northern Syria.

Elsewhere in his comments, the Iranian spokesman said although the fight against terrorism should be a main principle in the foreign policy of peace-loving countries, it should not provide a pretext to justify the violation of another country’s territorial integrity, military operations without permission from that country’s central government or disrespect for its sovereignty.

In the war on terrorism, there is no place for the approaches that would undermine a central government’s political sovereignty and legitimacy, Qassemi added.

Mount Damavand

It has a special place in Persian mythology and folklore. This peak is located in the middle of the Alborz range. The mountain is located near the southern coast of the Caspian Sea, in Amol County, Mazandaran Province, 66 kilometres (41 miles) northeast of the city of Tehran.

Spokesman Reiterates Iran’s Sovereignty over Persian Gulf Islands

Bahram Qassemi

The three islands are part of Iran’s territory, Bahram Qassemi said on Tuesday, in reaction to the Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, who raised doubt about Iran’s sovereignty over the islands at a news conference in Bahrain’s Manama on Monday.

“Repetition of such improper stances has not and will not have any impact on the historical, geographical and legal facts,” the spokesman underscored.

Qassemi further recommended Aboul Gheit to gain a better knowledge of the realities in the Persian Gulf region by spending more time to study history and geography.

The islands of the Greater Tunb, the Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa have historically been part of Iran, proof of which can be found and corroborated by countless historical, legal, and geographical documents in Iran and other parts of the world.

Petition Signed against MP Who Punched Journalist in Face

Nader Ghazipour

After an open parliamentary session on Monday, August 29, Ghazipour was approached by a reporter who questioned his plans to create a Turkish-speaking legislative faction.

According to IFP’s translation of media reports, Ghazipour accused the reporter of being against the Islamic Republic and against the country’s rule of Faqih (jurisprudent), and even claimed that the journalist had insulted the Iranian Turkish-speaking population.

When the reporter refused to back down and continued to press him, Ghazipour physically attacked the reporter, punching him in the face a number of times.

He also seized his voice recorder and erased what Ehsan Badaghi, the Parliament reporter of Iran newspaper, had recorded.

Ghazipour is the same parliament member who previously said that Parliament is no place for “children, donkeys or women”. He had made those remarks amid the campaigns for February Parliament Elections in Iran, and there were talks of MPs’ refusal to approve his credentials; however, no one raised any objection and he became a lawmaker.

Now, after his recent attack on Badaghi, 500 journalists signed a petition, calling on the Parliament to prosecute the offending lawmaker, who claimed on Tuesday that he was just “joking”!
