AEOI Chief Arrives in Belgium for Nuclear Talks

Ali Akbar Salehi

Heading a delegation, the AEOI chief left Tehran for Brussels, which also hosts the EU headquarters, on Monday at the invitation of the bloc’s Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Cañete and Belgian officials.

Salehi, who is a vice president and a senior member of the Iranian team negotiating with six global powers, plans to meet Cañete, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs Didier Reynders and a number of other EU and Belgian authorities.

The sides will discuss Iran’s cooperation with the EU and Belgium, particularly on the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

They are also likely to agree or sign documents for the expansion of cooperation.

Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council – the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China – plus Germany signed the nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), on July 14, 2015.

Under the JCPOA, which took effect in January, Iran undertook to put limitations on its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Tehran.

Since the JCPOA implementation, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has released regular reports confirming the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear activities and Tehran’s commitment to the agreement.

In April, IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano hailed Iran for respecting the nuclear accord, saying the Islamic Republic has even gone beyond its obligations.

Iran “is implementing not just its safeguards agreement with the Agency, but also its Additional Protocol” to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which allows for snap inspection of nuclear facilities, said Amano.

Political Dialogue Can Settle Mideast Issues: Rouhani

Rouhani

“Regional issues must be solved by regional countries and only through political dialogue and understanding,” Rouhani said in a phone conversation with Qatari Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, on Monday.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran will spare no effort in establishing and promoting such a process and everyone must make efforts in this area,” the Iranian president added.

He pointed to the spread of extremism, violence and terrorism in the region and expressed regret that “the region is not in a good state.”

“We are all duty-bound to save Muslims from [the threat] of terrorism and to make efforts to establish stability in the region and reinforce fraternity among Muslims,” the Iranian president pointed out.

Rouhani extended his congratulations to the Qatari emir on the auspicious occasion of Eid al-Adha (the Feast of Sacrifice).

The Qatari emir, for his part, said Tehran and Doha have always maintained cordial and deep-rooted relations and added that his country welcomes the expansion of ties with Iran in all fields.

He said Tehran and Doha must make use of their relations to solve complicated and difficult problems in the region and added that the Islamic Republic plays a leading role in regional developments which will also serve Qatar’s interests.

Thani stressed the importance of improving dialogue between Iran and the Persian Gulf littoral states, saying the existing problems must be settled by regional states and not foreign powers.

He added that interaction among countries in the region would undoubtedly serve the interests of regional people who are going through tough times in fighting terrorism.

The Qatari emir congratulated the Iranian president and nation on Eid al-Adha.

Iran Denies Reports of Ayatollah Khamenei’s Fatwa on Hajj, Karbala Pilgrimage

In a statement on Monday, Iran’s interests section in Cairo denied the stories about Ayatollah Khamenei’s fatwa on the performance of Hajj rituals by one million Iranians in Iraq’s holy Shiite sites, including the shrine of the third Shiite imam, Imam Hussein (AS), in the city of Karbala.

Reacting to a statement by Al-Azhar University and the media reports, the diplomatic mission dismissed the reports as “untrue, fabricated and defamatory”, saying such a decree has never been issued, either this year or in the past.

It came after Saudi-affiliated media outlets spread rumors that Iranian pilgrims, barred from Mecca amid escalating conflicts between Tehran and Riyadh, have come up with a “holy plan B” to substitute Karbala pilgrimage for Hajj.

139504291103317148165394The Iranian interests section explained that visiting the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) on the Day of Arafah is deemed a very honorable action by Muslims.

The diplomatic mission then highlighted Iran’s “technical and non-political” efforts to dispatch the nationals to this year’s hajj pilgrimage, denouncing the Riyadh regime for its political attitude towards Hajj, resorting to media hue and cry, trying to put the blame on Iran and shirking responsibility for the religious event.

The statement also referred to Saudi Arabia’s “incompetence, failure, and obstructionism” as the main reasons behind the absence of Iranian pilgrims in this year’s Hajj.

More than 460 Iranians were among some 7,000 pilgrims who died on September 24, 2015, in a crush of people in Mina, near Mecca, during last year’s Hajj pilgrimage.

139407051306186346182084The incident marked the worst ever tragedy during Hajj.

This year, Saudi Arabia barred all Iranians from making Hajj pilgrimage.

Tensions ran high between Tehran and Riyadh after Saudi Arabia’s execution of prominent Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, and a subsequent attack by outraged Iranian protesters on the Saudi embassy in Tehran, which resulted in the Arab country’s decision to sever its ties with the Islamic Republic.

President Rouhani to Visit Venezuela, Cuba, US

Parviz Esmaili, the deputy for communications and information at the president’s office, said on Monday that President Rouhani will leave for Venezuela on September 16 to attend the NAM summit, due to be held on Margarita Island.

Apart from meetings with a number of world leaders on the sidelines of the summit, President Rouhani will hand over Iran’s rotating presidency of the NAM to Venezuela, he added.

Moreover, Iranian officials in the president’s entourage will actively take part in a number of specialized gatherings at the summit, Esmaili noted.

At the conclusion of the Venezuela visit, President Rouhani will travel to Havana at the formal invitation of his Cuban counterpart Raul Castro.

During his stay in the Caribbean island nation, President Rouhani will meet with his Cuban counterpart and also Fidel Castro, while high-ranking delegations from the two countries are expected to hold negotiations and sign multiple cooperation agreements, Esmaili added.

President Rouhani will finally pay a two-day visit to New York to attend the 71st Regular Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

In addition to an address to the UNGA, the president is scheduled to hold several meetings with top foreign officials, religious leaders and political elites in New York, he explained.

Iran’s Potentials in Medicinal Plants and Diversity of Plant Species

According to a report by Khabar Online, as translated by IFP, Mohammad Hassan Osareh, the Secretary of the Centre for Medicinal Plants Technology Development, highlighted Iran’s position in the production of medicinal plants.

Osareh, who was addressing the closing ceremony of the 3rd National Festival and Exhibition of Medicinal Plants, Natural Products and Iranian Traditional Medicinal Plants, pointed to the presence of 8,000 plant species in Iran and noted, “230 of these species are used for perfumes, flavours, colours, health, and beauty products, herbal tea, fertilizers, and plant pesticides.”

“Iran gains $80m to $100m in revenue from the export of crude medicinal plants,” Osareh said.

Rose is one of the plants widely cultivated in Iran, he said, adding that rose oil is among the most precious essential oils, which is worth about $18,000 per litre.

“26,000 hectares of land are under cultivation of rose in Iran while Bulgaria, our rival country, has allocated only 2,000ha to the cultivation of this plant,” Osareh stressed.

According to him, Iran is a pioneer in cultivating saffron; however, the saffron cultivated in other countries is not comparable to that of Iran in terms of such organic compounds as Safranal.

Osareh went on to say that 94% of the world’s saffron is cultivated in Iran and added, “Iran earns $450m from the export of its saffron.”

The country has 11 of the 13 climate zones in the world, and thus enjoys such great diversity of medicinal plants, he noted.

Osareh highlighted the importance of technology in this industry and said, “Just like other countries, Iran can create a great amount of added value by integrating technology in plants.”

He pointed to the cultivation of olive, barberry, pomegranate, rose and saffron in Iran and stressed that “Iran is the only country that grows barberry in the world; hence, it has increased the area of land under cultivation for this crop from 12 hectares to 16.”

Iran Welcomes Ceasefire in Syria: Spokesman

bahram-ghasmei-696x464

Moscow and Washington agreed on Saturday a nationwide cessation of hostilities which will go into effect at sundown on September 12.

In reaction, Qassemi said that Iran always welcomes any ceasefire in Syria and the facilitation of all Syrian people’s access to humanitarian aid.

According to a report by the Foreign Ministry’s official website, as translated by IFP, Qassemi stressed that the ceasefire does not include such terrorist outfits as ISIS, Nusra Front, and newly-established groups derived from them.

He further urged that the ceasefire should not be used as an opportunity to regroup the terrorists and transfer fresh militants and new arms to the extremist groups.

“As the Syrian government has already noted, a lack of required guarantees on the commitment of Takfiri-terrorist groups to the ceasefire is the main reason for the failure of previous truce attempts.”

“Therefore, the continuation and sustainability of the ceasefire hinges on creating an inclusive mechanism for monitoring and controlling the borders in a bid to prevent the dispatch of fresh terrorists, arming, and financing the terrorists,” Qassemi noted.

During the ceasefire, he added, the humanitarian aid should be sent to all Syrian areas without any discrimination.

Qassemi went on to say that the aid should be dispatched particularly to the terrorist-held cities and towns, which have received less attention and been in adverse conditions for many years.

“The Islamic Republic has always emphasized that the cessation of war and a political solution are the sole ways to settle the Syrian crisis,” he said.

ISIS Suffers Severe Economic Blow

najm-al-jabouri

In an interview with IRNA, as translated by IFP, the Operations Commander of Nineveh Province Brigadier General Najm al-Jabouri announced that ISIS militants have suffered major setbacks, including losing control of more than half of the oil wells in the district of Qayyarah.

“This operation has dried up an enormous amount of oil revenues for ISIS, which was over $1m per month,” al-Jabour stressed.

He noted that the Iraqi forces have won back more than 60 oil wells from ISIS militants and added, “The terrorists used to make a fortune by extracting the wells.”

Qayyarah is home to one of the most important oil fields in northern Iraq. It had been occupied by the Takfiri [extremist] terrorist group ISIS over the past two years.
