Ballack, who has recently joined Instagram, was welcomed by Ali Karimi who posted in Farsi and invited his numerous fans to follow the page of the German footballer.

German Football Legend Michael Ballack Thanks Iran’s Ali Karimi in FarsiIn an English comment under that post by Karimi, Ballack thanked his Iranian counterpart on the same day.

Later on Monday, Ballack decided to post another thank-you message on his Instagram page, this time in Farsi.

“Great memories at @FCbayern,” Ballack said in English as a caption under his photo with Ali Karimi.

“Thank you Ali. It was great that we played together in FC Bayern Munich,” he said in Farsi.

“And I thank Iranian people for their support. I wish we can meet once again.”

“It was a great honour that we [Ballack and Karimi] played together in Iran in 2004,” he said, referring to a friendly match between Iran and Germany in Tehran.

Iranian Female Story Tellers at Frankfurt Book Fair

The Institute of Contemporary Art Development and the Iranian Embassy’s cultural attaché in Germany, jointly organized a music and narration performance ‘Epic Twins: Rostam and Siegfried’ at the Iran pavilion in the 68th Frankfurt Book Fair.

The text research and performance was from Sara Abbaspour and Parisa Simin-Mehr who had two shows in both Persian and German every day at the event.

According to a report by Financial Tribune, the performance was also accompanied by classical Persian music. Nazli Bakhshayesh, Alan Foroughi and Parsa Ahmadzadeh played the harp, ney and tonbak.

Iranian story-telling tradition known as ‘Naghali’ is the narrating of important stories from Iranian fables, myths and epics mentioned in the most important books since ancient times. It is usually undertaken before a big cloth or canvas hung on the walls of tea or coffee houses, painted on which are the events of the story being told by the naghal.

Stories are mostly taken from the tales mentioned in the globally-acclaimed poet Ferdowsi’s epic book Shahnameh (Book of Kings) and the naghal plays the roles of different characters with special tone, feelings and expressions.

Rostam is the most celebrated legendary hero in Shahnameh and Iranian mythology. He is always represented as the mightiest of Iranian warriors and is best known for his mournful fight with his son, Sohrab, who was killed in the battle, and for his seven quests where he fought with a lion, a dragon and a demon among other creatures.

Siegfried, also called Sigurd, is a figure from the heroic literature of the ancient Germanic people. He appears in both German and Old Norse literature. A feature common to all versions is his outstanding strength and courage as like one story where he fights with a dragon.

Simin-Mehr has been working on the Shahnameh and professional storytelling (naqali) since 2000. She has narrated several stories from Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, Saadi’s Bustan, Nezami’s Khosrow and Shirin and other Persian classics across Iran and in Italy and Germany.

Abbaspour has also performed at several naghali sessions in Iran, Italy and France.

 

Other Programs

The Iran pavilion at the prestigious German annual event also hosted a variety of programs including the launching of books and sessions on different aspects of Persian literature.

A total of 41 Iranian publishers presented new titles in adults and children categories, Mehr News Agency reported.

Tehran Publishers and Booksellers Association, Islamic Revolution Publishers Forum, Sacred Defence Publishers Society, Women Publishers Cultural Society and the Iranian Association of Academic Publishers were among the participants.

Children’s author Farhad Hassanzadeh, novel writer Davoud Ghaffarzadegan, screenwriter, critic and journalist Naghmeh Samini and writer Saeed Ramezani were among the literary figures who held meetings at the Iran pavilion.

Early Human Shows Signs of Right-Handedness

As it stands, nearly 90 per cent of people favour their right hand to their left, while in apes it’s closer to a 50/50 split. But when in human evolution did we begin to favour one hand over the other?

According to a report by Science Focus, as covered by Fars, a new study led by the University of Kansas sheds some light on the question, discovering markings on the teeth of a Homo habilis upper-jaw fossil, which suggest evidence of right-handedness as far back as 1.8 million years ago.

Published online in the Journal of Human Evolution, the study analysed labial striations (cut marks) on the teeth of a Homo habilis fossil found in the Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania.

The striations discovered on the lip side of the frontal teeth were put under the scrutiny of a microscope to determine alignment and quantify angulation. The majority of the striations veered from left down to the right, suggesting that Homo habilis was right-handed.

The study suggests that the markings come from the usage of a stone tool, and that the early human in question used the tool with its right hand to cut food it was holding in its mouth, while pulling with the left hand.

Iran Ready for Reciprocal Steps in Mending Ties with Canada

Iran and Canada are moving ahead with expert negotiations, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said in his weekly press conference on Monday, expressing the hope that settlement of the outstanding issues would help the two countries resume consular services to the citizens.

“Considering the importance that the Canadian government attaches, and should attach, to Iran, and given the notable number of Iranians residing in Canada, Ottawa needs to take positive steps, and we will take positive steps reciprocally,” he added.

Iran says it was not the one that cut ties with Canada, and thus welcomes any move by the new Canadian administration to resume bilateral relations.

Former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper severed diplomatic relations with Iran in September 2012, citing, among other pretexts, what it described as “continued threats from Iran to Israel”.

The two countries now maintain interests sections in the embassies of third countries.

However, Canada’s incumbent Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has signaled willingness to reopen the country’s embassy in Iran.

Iran Cooperating with Iraq to Ensure Security for Pilgrims: Commander

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Brigadier General Qassem Rezaei underlined that the Iranian and Iraqi border police have recently held a meeting to coordinate efforts for controlling borders and establishing a sustainable security in the border areas.

He further emphasized that the two sides have reached some agreements on taking measures to ensure the security of pilgrims traveling to Iraq’s holy sites.

Back in August, a senior official at Iran’s Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization told Tasnim that the organization is fully prepared to dispatch more than two million pilgrims to Iraq’s holy cities during the upcoming Arbaeen ceremony in November.

“We are prepared to begin the dispatch of pilgrims attending Arbaeen ceremony on October 22,” he said at the time, adding that Iraq has also announced its readiness to host the Iranian pilgrims.

He further predicted that more than two million Iranians would go on pilgrimage to Iraq for Arbaeen this year.

Arbaeen, which is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS).

Each year, a huge crowd of Shiites flock to the Iraqi city of Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites.

Last year, around 20 million pilgrims from all over the world, including over 1.6 million Iranians, gathered in Karbala to attend the mourning ceremonies marking Arbaeen.

Iran’s Steel Production Surpasses 13mln Tons in 9 Months

Iran’s steel production in January-September 2016 stood at 13.21 million tons, indicating an 8 percent growth compared with the corresponding period last year, the latest report by the WSA shows.

Iran had produced 12.231 million tons of steel in the first 9 months of 2015.

According to the report, China is by far the world’s biggest steel producer with an output of 603.780 million tons in 9 months. The second and third places go to the US and Russia with less than 60 million tons in the same period.

The 66 countries in the WSA ranking have accounted for approximately 99% of total world crude steel production in 2015.

In 2015, the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) released a master plan to raise Iran’s annual capacity to produce steel by 11.6 million tons with the collaboration of a number of domestic and foreign companies.

Iran is the biggest steel producer in the Middle East.

Iran, EU to Hold Comprehensive Talks in December

Speaking at a press conference in Tehran on Monday, Bahram Qassemi said Iran will be represented at the level of deputy foreign ministers in the December negotiations.

“Various issues will be mooted in those negotiations, and human rights could be one of them,” he noted.

The Brussels talks will not necessary focus on the human rights issues, as “we will have a lot of other subjects that we will raise,” the spokesman added.

According to Qassemi, the Iranian team of negotiators in the upcoming talks will not include a certain human rights delegation, but will be comprised of “a specialized delegation” including experts in each of fields that are going to be discussed.

“Our relations with Europe are significant and age-old; we have a lot in common, and could have differences in issue about values or even regional issues,” he noted.

In August, Iran’s top judge Ayatollah Amoli Larijani proposed that the Islamic Republic and Europe can begin discussions about human rights, provided that Iran also has the chance to question the shortcomings of Europeans regarding human rights.

“I suggest that the (Judiciary’s) Human Rights Council, the Foreign Ministry and the Supreme National Security Council pave the way for talks with European countries (on human rights),” he said, adding that the US must be excluded from any such discussions because “Americans are only after deception.”

“We also have things to say about human rights in Europe. We have questions and views about Europe’s approach toward humans, Islamophobia in Europe, and France’s ban on hijab,” he stressed.

First KLM Flight Arrives in Iran after 3 Years

The first flight of the company in its new Iran service period landed in Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKIA) on Saturday evening, Press TV quoted Iran’s local media as saying.

The Amsterdam-based company had suspended its flights to Iran since April 2013 in what its officials said was a result of “economic reasons”.

KLM Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer René de Groot said that his company is set to establish four flights to Tehran each week.

He emphasized that his company is happy to resume flights to Iran, emphasizing that he hopes the sanctions against the Islamic Republic would never return.

“What we do is [that] we continue as long as we can,” de Groot told IRIB News Service. “Of course, we hope that the sanctions will not come back and we can grow even with more frequencies.”

KLM had in August announced that its Flight KL0433 will depart from Amsterdam to Tehran on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays as of late October 2016.

The flights will be operated with a Boeing 777-200 in a three-class configuration with 34 business seats, 40 seats in economy comfort and 242 seats in economy, it added.

Including the new flights to Tehran, KLM now offers 37 flights to nine destinations in the Middle East.

Several international airlines are resuming flights to Iran to tap into increasing opportunities in the country after the recent lifting of sanctions.

British Airways also resumed direct flights to Iranian capital Tehran from July. The airline now operates a six-time weekly service and will move to daily flights from winter 2016.

Iran, Deutsche Bank Resume Oil Partnership

Iran’s Deputy Petroleum Minister for International Affairs Amir-Hossein Zamaninia was quoted by domestic media as saying that the new phase of cooperation between Deutsche Bank and Iran had started last week after a halt of about 10 years.

Zamaninia added that Iran expects to see several other major European banks to follow suit and resume cooperation with the country over its oil-related financial transactions.

“Previously, merely certain small European banks were ready to cooperate with Iran over its oil-related transactions,” the official told Mehr News Agency. Still, a larger number of European banks – particularly major ones – are today approaching Iran, he added.

Zamaninia further emphasized that several important European banks are set to start providing services to Iran “within the next few days.”

Deutsche Bank officially suspended banking activities in Iran in 2006 especially in areas of crude or oil product sales.

In 2007, the Deutsche Bank’s spokesman Ronald Weichert confirmed that it was pulling out of Iran, a country where it derived just 0.1% of its revenue, “because it didn’t make business sense to stay.”

The decision was seen by the media at the time also as a reaction by the bank to concerns of falling afoul of US sanctions against Iran. This particularly became evident after it reportedly informed its clients shortly afterwards that it had stopped its Iran-related services “for fear of US sanctions.”
