China’s Defence Minister Due in Iran Sunday

general-chang-wanquan

The top Chinese military official is scheduled to arrive in Tehran tomorrow for a three-day visit at the invitation of his Iranian counterpart Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan.

Apart from meetings with Dehqan, the Chinese defence minister will also hold talks with senior Iranian political and military officials on bilateral, regional and international issues.

In September, China’s Ambassador to Iran Pang Sen had unveiled plans for reciprocal visits by delegations from the armed forces of Iran and China.

Tehran and Beijing have close diplomatic, economic, trade and energy ties, and in recent years have developed their military relations as well.

In May 2014, the Iranian defence minister paid an official visit to China to negotiate mutual visits and personnel training cooperation between the two countries.

Int’l Pahlavani Federation Appoints Iranian Wrestler as Its New President

Alireza Heidari

The election ceremony was held on Friday evening on the sidelines of the first Pahlavani Wrestling World Championship in Minsk, Belarus.

During the meeting of International Pahlavani Wrestling Federation’s board of directors, Iran’s Alireza Heidari received the highest number of votes to be elected as the federation’s president.

As per the decision made by International Pahlavani Wrestling Federation’s board of directors, Tehran has been selected as the headquarters of the federation.

The first edition of Pahlavani Wrestling Championship has started in Minsk with athletes from 45 countries in attendance.

Pahlavani wrestlers from Iran, Russia, Belarus, Georgia, Azerbaijan Republic, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Bulgaria, Estonia, Moldova, Germany, the Netherlands, Greece, France, Pakistan, Indonesia, Lithuania, among others, are taking part in these games, as reported by IRNA and translated by IFP.

On May 3, 2016, the International Pahlavani Wrestling Federation started its operation as the governing body responsible for the organization of major international tournaments of the sport, Mehr reported.

The federation was established following the United World Wrestling’s green light as well as strenuous efforts made by the Islamic Republic of Iran Wrestling Federation (IRIWF) and a number of foreign federations in holding international Pahlavani wrestling tournaments in 2015 and 2016.

Pahlavani wrestling dates back to ancient Persia and is said it was practiced by mythological heroes in great battles.

Considered of high spiritual value, it combines martial arts and freestyle techniques, calisthenics, strength training and epic music.

Pahlavani wrestling is recognized by UNESCO as among the world’s longest-running forms of sport.

UN’s Syria Envoy in Iran for Talks

staffan-de-mistura

De Mistura arrived in the Iranian capital on Saturday. He had been invited by Hossein Jaberi Ansari, Iran’s deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs, whom he will meet on Saturday.

The UN official has traveled to Iran several times since his appointment as the UN’s envoy for Syria to hold talks with Iranian officials. He last visited Iran in April.

The emissary regularly travels to regional countries to help bring about convergence that could pave the way for the resolution of the Syrian conflict, which has, according to his estimates, killed some 400,000 people so far.

Earlier in the month, he had met with the European Union (EU)’s foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini in Brussels.

Mogherini, too, has previously visited Iran to address the regional situation.

The Syrian government has been fighting a foreign-sponsored militancy since 2011. The UN has been attempting to put an end to the fighting including by assigning special envoys for the Arab country. Such attempts, however, have so far been largely fruitless.

Late last month, de Mistura warned that ongoing attempts by Takfiri terrorists to break a government siege of the western part of the city of Aleppo could amount to war crimes. He voiced his shock at the indiscriminate use of heavy weapons by the militants during their onslaught on western Aleppo’s civilian suburbs.

Iran Should Not Be Afraid of Letting EU Open Office in Tehran: MP

Ali Motahari

Ali Motahari, the Vice-Speaker of Iranian Parliament, referred to the recent talks and controversies over the European Union’s decision to open an office in Tehran, saying such offices have been opened in other countries as well, and it is not limited to Iran.

“There are EU offices in many countries, and we can also have an office in Europe,” Motahari said, as reported by ILNA and translated by IFP.

He further pointed to the concerns in Iran about the opening of EU office, and said, “The main concern is about the possibility of their interference in Iran’s human rights conditions.

“The issue of human rights has two aspects: One is related to the Islamic rules, which is neither negotiable, nor understandable for them. The second aspect is related to common human affairs, which do not belong in a particular ideology.”

“In this aspect, Europeans might have criticisms of Iran’s human rights conditions, and I believe some of them are valid,” Motahari said, stressing that “we should accept the valid human rights criticisms.”

“We should also constantly observe the human rights conditions in Europe, because there are many cases of human rights violation in Europe as well. Therefore, the observation of human rights should be a mutual behaviour: As they observe us, we should also observe their behaviour and express our protests,” he noted.

“What matters here is that if there is a valid criticism, we should not resist and should accept it,” the Iranian lawmaker added.

Asked about the concerns that such an office would turn to ‘a den of espionage’, Motahari said, “We should wait and see how they will behave. We cannot judge before the opening of their office. If the opening of EU office in Tehran is aimed at interfering in Iran’s executive affairs, no country would accept that.”

However, he added, if their office is going to comment on human rights issues, Iran should do the same in dealing with European countries.

“A ruling system that has a good popular base should not be worried about the opening of such offices,” Motahari added.

He pointed to the upcoming human rights conditions between Iran and Europe, saying that Tehran has basic differences with the West in terms of human rights.

“Wherever we have differences in principles, it cannot be resolved. These cases include the death penalty, and generally the Sharia-based rulings,” he said.

“By the way, we are ready to discuss these issues and explain them to the other side, but that is unlikely to be acceptable to them.”

Senior Clerics in Iran Show Reactions to Trump’s Election

Ahmad Khatami

Ayatollah Mohammad Mahdi Hosseini Hamedani, the Leader’s representative in Alborz Province, referred to the recent US elections as one of the unique events in the contemporary history of the world.

Ayatollah Mohammad Mahdi Hosseini Hamedan“The situation in the US society … became so adverse that a deep social gap was made between elites and ordinary people, insomuch that they were convinced to vote for a licentious crazy man to get out of this black hole and reform their ruling system,” he said, as reported by Tasnim and translated by IFP.

He referred to the remarks made by Trump and Hillary Clinton during the US presidential debates, and said that they disgraced their country and destroyed the credit Americans claimed to have.

“Many scandals were revealed during the debates and these remarks suffice to discourage those who long for having relationship and talks with this country,” he added.

“One of the candidates admitted that the US is dying, and this is completely true. We repeat the same slogan, death to America, every week,” Ayatollah Hosseini Hamedani noted.

“The entire world has understood that the US is not anymore the world power it used to be, and God has prepared the grounds for Americans to destroy themselves,” he added.

The entire world has understood that the US is not anymore the world power it used to be

“Changes in the US should not have any impact on Iran, and those who seek to have relations with the US want Iran to be independent to Washington. They are opposed to Iran’s independence, and are trying to make us dependent once again,” the senior cleric went on to say.

Ahmad AlamolhodaAccording to a report by Tasnim, as translated by IFP, Ayatollah Seyyed Ahmad Alamolhoda, the Leader’s representative in holy city of Mashhad, said the new US president has an embarrassing background including a sexual assault on a 13-year-old girl, and this is a shame for a country that claims to be the world’s number one democracy.

Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami, the Friday Prayers Imam of Tehran, also warned the next US president against repeating his predecessors’ mistakes about Iran, saying Washington must avoid “playing with fire.”

Khatami“Iranians are a brave nation. Beware, toying with Iran is [like] playing with fire,” said Ayatollah Khatami during a sermon to worshipers at the weekly Friday Prayers in Tehran.
He added that if the US president-elect Trump follows the same path as his predecessors, he would undoubtedly face the same fate.

“The American people are weary of adventurism of the country’s statesmen across the world,” the cleric said, as reported by Press TV.

He added that wherever the slightest turmoil breaks out, the US shows up and said the country’s taxpayers’ money is spent to murder people in Yemen, Syria and other countries.

Khatami said a country grappling with so many problems cannot end the plights of other nations and expressed hope that Trump would act wisely and steer clear of tensions with any country.

On the US presidential election, he added, the Islamic Republic pursued impartiality which was a “very prudent and reasonable policy.”

A country grappling with so many problems [the US] cannot end the plights of other nations.

After the presidential election, Iran also adopted a wise stance because it does not “interfere in [the affairs of] any country and respects the countries’ nations and their votes,” Khatami said and noted that Tehran has been committed to this policy since the victory of the Islamic Revolution some 37 years ago.

alireza-arafiAyatollah Alireza Arafi, the Friday Prayers Imam of the holy city of Qom, said that Iran is a free and independent country whose ideas and causes are not at all dependent on the childish games and domestic conflicts in the US.

“Iran has never interfered in the internal affairs and conflicts of the US. We don’t care about the ones coming and going in this country,” he went on to say, as reported by Tasnim and translated by IFP.

“The US policies have not changed,” Ayatollah Arafi said, noting that Americans cannot change their approaches towards Iraq, Syria, and Yemen.

Ali RezaeeAli Rezaei, the Friday Prayers Imam in Birjand [eastern Iran], also referred to Trump as a racist and capitalist bully, and stressed that the American people will be harmed by the election of this man, as reported by ISNA, and translated by IFP.

Iran, Czech Republic Sign MoU

Iran-Czech Republic

Following a meeting to discuss bilateral ties and regional and international developments, Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Czech counterpart, Lubomir Zaoralek, signed the MoU on holding regular political consultations between the two countries.

They also held a joint press conference after the meeting.

Zarif arrived in Prague on Thursday night as part of a tour of Eastern Europe, which earlier took him to Romania and Slovakia.

On Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said that Tehran and Prague are going to upgrade diplomatic ties to the ambassador level.

He added that the charges d’affaires of the two countries have been proposed for the position of ambassador.

Iran Will Consider Other Options If JCPOA Not Honored: Zarif

Mohammad Javad Zarif

Speaking in a joint press conference with his Czech counterpart Lubomir Zaoralek in Prague on Friday, Zarif criticized the United States for “not fully implementing” its obligations under the nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries.

“Iran has been implementing its part of the bargain. Unfortunately, the United States, even during the current administration, has not fully implemented its part of the bargain but we believe that JCPOA is a reasonable agreement good for everybody,” he said.

“That’s our preference. It doesn’t mean that we do not have other options. Iran wants to remain committed to JCPOA provided that everybody else is prepared to do the same,” the Iranian foreign minister pointed out.

Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the United States, France, Britain, China and Russia – plus Germany started to implement the JCPOA on January 16.

Under the JCPOA, Iran undertook to put limitations on its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of nuclear-related bans imposed against Tehran.

Ever since the deal was struck, its opponents in US Congress have been threatening that a future US administration opposed to the agreement would scrap it.

During the election campaign in the US, now president-elect Donald Trump threatened that he would “tear up” the JCPOA or try to renegotiate its terms if elected president, Press TV reported.

However, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Wednesday that the nuclear agreement negotiated with Iran under the outgoing US administration is not a deal with a single country or a single government.

He added that the JCPOA has been reflected in a UN Security Council Resolution, and therefore, cannot be overturned on the back of one government’s decision.

US Republican presidential candidate Trump won more than the required 270 electoral votes in the 2016 presidential election on Wednesday, becoming the 45th president of the United States.

Trump’s Victory Not to Jeopardize Iran Deals

Mohammad-Reza Nematzadeh, Iran’s minister of industry, mine and trade, also told reporters that the election of Donald Trump as the new president of the United States will have no impact on its industrial deals that it has sealed with global corporations.

“The deals the country has signed over major industrial projects were independent from the nuclear deal that has come under repeated attacks by Trump in his campaign speeches,” he noted.

Nematzadeh said the foreign parties to Iran’s industrial contracts had in several occasions demanded to devise a mechanism to link their implementation on the fate of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

“However, we never accepted any preconditions [for signing the deals],” he said. “None of the contracts that we have signed contain any reference to the JCPOA and we will go ahead with them under any condition”.

Iran’s minister of industries further emphasized that the US under Trump cannot unilaterally cancel the nuclear deal with Iran that the administration of the outgoing president Barack Obama sealed with Tehran together with four other Security Council member states plus Germany – the so-called P5+1 – last year.

“The JCPOA does not involve only the US,” Nematzadeh said. “Other countries are also involved in it.  Therefore, it cannot be cancelled unilaterally. This was [the result of] an international decision that was adopted at the level of the United Nations”.

On the same front, Pedram Soltani, the deputy president of Iran’s Chamber of Commerce and one of the country’s top merchants, told the domestic media that the election to power of a “hostile president” in the US cannot stop Iran’s efforts to revive its trade ties with the world after the removal of multiple years of sanctions.

“Iran’s economy … is in a path to recover the trade ties that were significantly reduced over the past 10 years,” Soltani told ISNA.

“The election of a new president in the US who has a hostile approach toward the JCPOA cannot have any serious impact on our efforts toward recovery.”

Iran Deplores Terrorist Attack on German Consulate in Afghanistan

Afghanistan

At least six people were killed and more than 100, including three police officers, injured in a car bomb attack on the German consulate building in Afghanistan’s northern province of Balkh late on Thursday.

The attacker rammed his explosives-laden car into the wall of the consulate in the provincial capital city of Mazar-i-Sharif, located some 400 kilometers northwest of the capital Kabul.

He extended his condolences to the families of the victims of the horrific and terrorist crime and said the international community is duty-bound to prevent the spread of terrorism and counter savage acts by Takfiri groups.

Qassemi emphasized that the attack once again proved that “terrorism knows no nationality or location.”

Martin Schaefer, a spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry, said on Friday that a crisis task force had met late Thursday and again Friday to assess the situation after the assault.

The consulate staff had been moved to the headquarters of the German military on the edge of the city and were already able to continue its work there, the German official said.

The Taliban militant group claimed responsibility for the “revenge attack,” which it said was in response to US airstrikes that left 32 civilians dead in Kunduz Province earlier this month.

The Taliban militants were ousted from power following the 2001 US-led invasion of Afghanistan, but they have stepped up activities in recent months.

Afghanistan still witnesses insecurity despite the presence of thousands of foreign troops led by the United States.
