Edward Snowden: Don’t Fear Trump!

According to a report covered by IRNA, in an unexpectedly upbeat conversation, the American whistle-blower Edward Snowden told an audience at the Pathé Tuschinski theatre in Amsterdam via a live stream on Thursday that for those concerned about privacy, they should not worry too much about Trump, they are the ones who can make a change.

“This is a dark moment in our nation’s history, but it is not the end of history.”

The bigger question is “how do we defend the rights of everyone, everywhere, without regard to borders?”

“I try not to look at this as a question of a single election or a single president or even a single government, because we see these threats coming across borders,” Snowden said.

“If we want a better world, we can’t hope for an Obama, or fear a Trump. We should build it ourselves,” he said.

In other words, citizens should think about their own security and privacy rather than relying on a politician to make changes. He said that Americans need to think about how to “defend the rights of everyone, everywhere,” rather than defending against Trump in high office.

Snowden spoke remotely from Russia, where he has resided since first disclosing the NSA’s extensive surveillance activities in 2013.

Snowden, 33, is wanted in the United States to face trial on charges brought under the tough Espionage Act. But he said he was unconcerned about the possibility that Russian President Vladimir Putin could send him back once Trump is sworn in.

According to a report covered by Fars, Persian Gulf powers watched with alarm as US President Barack Obama forged a deal with its top regional foe over Iran’s nuclear program last year and warned it would embolden Tehran’s pursuit of regional hegemony.

Trump, who triumphed in the US election this week, has said he would dismantle the nuclear deal agreed last year, although he has made other contradictory statements on the accord. Iran denies ever having considered developing atomic weapons.

“I don’t think he should scrap it. It’s been worked on for many years and the general consensus in the world, not just the United States, is that it has achieved an objective, which is a 15-year hiatus in the program that Iran embarked on to develop nuclear weapons,” Prince Turki al-Faisal, a former Saudi intelligence chief and ex-ambassador to Washington and London said on Thursday.

“To scrap that willy-nilly as it were will have ramifications, and I don’t know if something else can be put in its place to guarantee that Iran will not go that route if the agreement is scrapped,” he said at a think-tank event in Washington.

Iran Proposes Nuclear Energy Cooperation with Hungary

In a meeting with Speaker of the National Assembly of Hungary Laszlo Kover in Tehran on Saturday, President Rouhani highlighted Iran’s progress in modern technologies, such as nanotechnology and biotechnology, proposing mutual cooperation in the nuclear industry.

The president also made a reference to the agreements that Iran has signed with a lot of foreign companies, including Europeans, in the post-JCPOA era, and invited Hungarian investors and enterprises to tap into the opportunities available in Iran.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is a nuclear agreement between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) that came into force in January.

He also called for efforts to carry out the bilateral accords that the two countries signed during Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s 2015 visit to Iran, urging closer interaction in the cultural and academic fields and in the tourism industry.

Iran Proposes Nuclear Energy Cooperation with Hungary

Kover, for his part, voiced Hungary’s readiness to promote economic ties with Iran, stressing the need for holding a joint commission meeting to accelerate enhancement of cooperation.

Highlighting the significant role of the parliaments in strengthening bilateral relations, the Hungarian speaker also called for collaboration in the banking sector, energy industry, and the fight against terrorism.

In November 2015, Hungary’s Prime Minister Orban paid a visit to Iran, leading a group of 120 economic activists, businessmen and officials from the European country’s banks.

The two countries inked eight documents on cooperation in various areas during the visit, which marked the first trip by a Hungarian prime minister to the Islamic Republic in 27 years.

China’s Defence Minister Due in Iran Sunday

The top Chinese military official is scheduled to arrive in Tehran tomorrow for a three-day visit at the invitation of his Iranian counterpart Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan.

Apart from meetings with Dehqan, the Chinese defence minister will also hold talks with senior Iranian political and military officials on bilateral, regional and international issues.

In September, China’s Ambassador to Iran Pang Sen had unveiled plans for reciprocal visits by delegations from the armed forces of Iran and China.

Tehran and Beijing have close diplomatic, economic, trade and energy ties, and in recent years have developed their military relations as well.

In May 2014, the Iranian defence minister paid an official visit to China to negotiate mutual visits and personnel training cooperation between the two countries.

Int’l Pahlavani Federation Appoints Iranian Wrestler as Its New President

The election ceremony was held on Friday evening on the sidelines of the first Pahlavani Wrestling World Championship in Minsk, Belarus.

During the meeting of International Pahlavani Wrestling Federation’s board of directors, Iran’s Alireza Heidari received the highest number of votes to be elected as the federation’s president.

As per the decision made by International Pahlavani Wrestling Federation’s board of directors, Tehran has been selected as the headquarters of the federation.

The first edition of Pahlavani Wrestling Championship has started in Minsk with athletes from 45 countries in attendance.

Pahlavani wrestlers from Iran, Russia, Belarus, Georgia, Azerbaijan Republic, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Bulgaria, Estonia, Moldova, Germany, the Netherlands, Greece, France, Pakistan, Indonesia, Lithuania, among others, are taking part in these games, as reported by IRNA and translated by IFP.

On May 3, 2016, the International Pahlavani Wrestling Federation started its operation as the governing body responsible for the organization of major international tournaments of the sport, Mehr reported.

The federation was established following the United World Wrestling’s green light as well as strenuous efforts made by the Islamic Republic of Iran Wrestling Federation (IRIWF) and a number of foreign federations in holding international Pahlavani wrestling tournaments in 2015 and 2016.

Pahlavani wrestling dates back to ancient Persia and is said it was practiced by mythological heroes in great battles.

Considered of high spiritual value, it combines martial arts and freestyle techniques, calisthenics, strength training and epic music.

Pahlavani wrestling is recognized by UNESCO as among the world’s longest-running forms of sport.

UN’s Syria Envoy in Iran for Talks

De Mistura arrived in the Iranian capital on Saturday. He had been invited by Hossein Jaberi Ansari, Iran’s deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs, whom he will meet on Saturday.

The UN official has traveled to Iran several times since his appointment as the UN’s envoy for Syria to hold talks with Iranian officials. He last visited Iran in April.

The emissary regularly travels to regional countries to help bring about convergence that could pave the way for the resolution of the Syrian conflict, which has, according to his estimates, killed some 400,000 people so far.

Earlier in the month, he had met with the European Union (EU)’s foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini in Brussels.

Mogherini, too, has previously visited Iran to address the regional situation.

The Syrian government has been fighting a foreign-sponsored militancy since 2011. The UN has been attempting to put an end to the fighting including by assigning special envoys for the Arab country. Such attempts, however, have so far been largely fruitless.

Late last month, de Mistura warned that ongoing attempts by Takfiri terrorists to break a government siege of the western part of the city of Aleppo could amount to war crimes. He voiced his shock at the indiscriminate use of heavy weapons by the militants during their onslaught on western Aleppo’s civilian suburbs.

Iran Should Not Be Afraid of Letting EU Open Office in Tehran: MP

Ali Motahari, the Vice-Speaker of Iranian Parliament, referred to the recent talks and controversies over the European Union’s decision to open an office in Tehran, saying such offices have been opened in other countries as well, and it is not limited to Iran.

“There are EU offices in many countries, and we can also have an office in Europe,” Motahari said, as reported by ILNA and translated by IFP.

He further pointed to the concerns in Iran about the opening of EU office, and said, “The main concern is about the possibility of their interference in Iran’s human rights conditions.

“The issue of human rights has two aspects: One is related to the Islamic rules, which is neither negotiable, nor understandable for them. The second aspect is related to common human affairs, which do not belong in a particular ideology.”

“In this aspect, Europeans might have criticisms of Iran’s human rights conditions, and I believe some of them are valid,” Motahari said, stressing that “we should accept the valid human rights criticisms.”

“We should also constantly observe the human rights conditions in Europe, because there are many cases of human rights violation in Europe as well. Therefore, the observation of human rights should be a mutual behaviour: As they observe us, we should also observe their behaviour and express our protests,” he noted.

“What matters here is that if there is a valid criticism, we should not resist and should accept it,” the Iranian lawmaker added.

Asked about the concerns that such an office would turn to ‘a den of espionage’, Motahari said, “We should wait and see how they will behave. We cannot judge before the opening of their office. If the opening of EU office in Tehran is aimed at interfering in Iran’s executive affairs, no country would accept that.”

However, he added, if their office is going to comment on human rights issues, Iran should do the same in dealing with European countries.

“A ruling system that has a good popular base should not be worried about the opening of such offices,” Motahari added.

He pointed to the upcoming human rights conditions between Iran and Europe, saying that Tehran has basic differences with the West in terms of human rights.

“Wherever we have differences in principles, it cannot be resolved. These cases include the death penalty, and generally the Sharia-based rulings,” he said.

“By the way, we are ready to discuss these issues and explain them to the other side, but that is unlikely to be acceptable to them.”

Ayatollah Mohammad Mahdi Hosseini Hamedani, the Leader’s representative in Alborz Province, referred to the recent US elections as one of the unique events in the contemporary history of the world.

“Many scandals were revealed during the debates and these remarks suffice to discourage those who long for having relationship and talks with this country,” he added.

“One of the candidates admitted that the US is dying, and this is completely true. We repeat the same slogan, death to America, every week,” Ayatollah Hosseini Hamedani noted.

“The entire world has understood that the US is not anymore the world power it used to be, and God has prepared the grounds for Americans to destroy themselves,” he added.

“Changes in the US should not have any impact on Iran, and those who seek to have relations with the US want Iran to be independent to Washington. They are opposed to Iran’s independence, and are trying to make us dependent once again,” the senior cleric went on to say.

Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami, the Friday Prayers Imam of Tehran, also warned the next US president against repeating his predecessors’ mistakes about Iran, saying Washington must avoid “playing with fire.”

He added that if the US president-elect Trump follows the same path as his predecessors, he would undoubtedly face the same fate.

“The American people are weary of adventurism of the country’s statesmen across the world,” the cleric said, as reported by Press TV.

He added that wherever the slightest turmoil breaks out, the US shows up and said the country’s taxpayers’ money is spent to murder people in Yemen, Syria and other countries.

Khatami said a country grappling with so many problems cannot end the plights of other nations and expressed hope that Trump would act wisely and steer clear of tensions with any country.

On the US presidential election, he added, the Islamic Republic pursued impartiality which was a “very prudent and reasonable policy.”

“The US policies have not changed,” Ayatollah Arafi said, noting that Americans cannot change their approaches towards Iraq, Syria, and Yemen.
