Iranian and Russian Presidents Welcome Syria Truce, Call for Further Anti-Terror Moves

Rouhani-Putin

In a telephone conversation on Saturday evening, the two presidents said the battle against terrorism and terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIL) and Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, formerly known as al-Nusra Front, must continue.

They also exchanged views about cooperation among Iran, Russia and Syria ahead of the peace talks due to be held in Astana, Kazakhstan, between the parties to the Syrian conflict.

“We welcome the ceasefire which was achieved in Syria as a result of cooperation among Iran, Russia and Syria, and we also regard as necessary further consultation and coordination among countries ahead of the Kazakhstan meeting,” Rouhani said.

The Iranian president also stressed the importance of sending more humanitarian aid to the Syrian people, particularly those living in militant-held cities.

“It is very important that we protect and safeguard this ceasefire after the recent victories,” he added.

The ceasefire agreement excludes the most brutal of terror outfits operating in Syria, namely Daesh and Jabhat Fateh al-Sham.

The truce was mediated by Russia and Turkey, which respectively represented the Syrian government and the anti-Damascus militants.

Ankara has stepped up its cooperation with Moscow recently, prompting speculation that Turkey might be moving away from the US, which is supporting Kurdish militants in Syria.

Russia and Turkey successfully brokered a similar accord earlier this month following the defeat of militants, which ended years of fighting in the strategic Syrian city of Aleppo and facilitated the evacuation of residents from the city.

The Russian president, for his part, said the ongoing ceasefire in Syria was the outcome of cooperation among all countries, particularly Iran and Russia, which seek to establish peace in the Arab state, Press TV reported.

The Russian president stressed the importance of protecting the recent achievements made in Syria and making further joint efforts to fight international terrorism.

He said Moscow is ready to cooperate with groups in Syria that seek to promote peace, stressing, “We will undoubtedly not allow terrorist groups like Daesh, al-Nusra Front and similar ones to be included in the ceasefire agreement.”

It was the fourth phone conversations between the Iranian and Russian presidents about the developments in Syria over the past month.

ISIS Plotting Chemical Attack on Britain: Minister

ISIS in Europe

Ben Wallace said ISIS had used chemical weapons in Syria and Iraq and intelligence chiefs believe it has an “aspiration” to use them on home soil.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, Wallace said security chiefs had recently carried out exercises to deal with what he called the country’s “worst fear”.

Ben Wallace, the minister responsible for national security, has warned of the threat from ‘traitors’.

Speaking after the US imposed sanctions on Russia for seeking to influence the presidential election result, Wallace warned that terrorist groups, Russian agents and cyber-conmen had all launched a concerted campaign to recruit “traitors” in government, the military and leading businesses.

Earlier in April, Mirror had also quoted EU and NATO security chiefs as saying that ISIS is plotting biological and nuclear attacks on Britain and Europe.

Experts believe the terror gang is constantly developing new ways of avoiding strict security measures to launch attacks such as bombs implanted in human bodies.

It is feared the group has even managed to obtain a stockpile of former Iraqi short range missiles such as surface to air rockets.

Iran Condemns Terrorist Attacks in Istanbul and Baghdad

Bahram Qassemi

According to a Farsi report by ISNA, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi condemned the recent acts of terrorism in Istanbul and Baghdad, and expressed sympathy with the Iraqi and Turkish nations and governments, and the bereaved families of the victims.

“Biased appeasement, instrumental use of violence and terrorism, and adopting double-standard policies against them have contributed to the continued existence of this global scourge, which has crossed all geographical, political, ethical, and religious borders,” Qassemi noted.

He went on to say that the only way to counter this phenomenon is the resolve, consensus, and unity of all countries against violence and terror.

He also expressed the hope that the New Christian Year would be devoid of terrorism and violence thanks to the vigilance and firm resolve of all governments and nations.

A gunman reportedly dressed in a Santa costume killed at least 39 people, including at least 16 foreigners, at a famous nightclub in Istanbul during New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Armed with a long-barrelled weapon, the attacker shot a police officer before storming the elite Reina club in the Ortakoy area of the city at about 1.45am.

Earlier on Saturday, two blasts had rocked the central part of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, killing at least 18 people, according to police.

The blasts hit a market in the Al-Sinek area in Baghdad, the second one after first responders had arrived to rescue the victims from the first explosion.

“Unfortunately (he) rained bullets in a very cruel and merciless way on innocent people who were there to celebrate New Year’s and have fun,” Istanbul Governor Vasip Sahin said, describing the carnage as a “terror attack”.

Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said the gunman was still at large. “The search for the terrorist continues… Our security forces have started the necessary operations. God willing he will be caught in a short period of time,” Telegraph reported.

Raising the death toll to 39, Mr Soylu said that of 21 victims who had been identified so far, 16 were foreigners and five were Turks. Another 69 people were being treated in hospital for their wounds.

Turkey has been hit by a string of attacks in recent months, blamed on Kurdish militants and ISIS terrorists.

On December 10, 44 people were killed in a double bombing in Istanbul after a football match hosted by top side Besiktas. That attack, which targeted a police bus, was claimed by the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK) seen as a radical offshoot of the PKK.

A week later, 14 Turkish soldiers were killed and dozens more wounded in a suicide car bombing blamed on Kurdish militants targeting off-duty conscripts also claimed by the TAK.

In June, 47 people were killed in a triple suicide bombing and gun attack at Istanbul’s Ataturk airport, with authorities blaming ISIS, Guardian reported.

Another 57 people, 34 of them children, were killed in August in a suicide attack by an ISIS-linked bomber at a Kurdish wedding in the southeastern city of Gaziantep.

Iran Warns against Efforts to Reinforce Terrorists during Syria Truce

“One must watch out that no opportunity will be created during the time of ceasefire for the terrorists’ reinforcement,” Rouhani said in a meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem and Major General Ali Mamlouk, the head of Syria’s National Security Bureau, in Tehran on Saturday.

The ceasefire, which took effect across Syria at midnight on Friday, excludes the most brutal of terror outfits operating in the Arab country, namely ISIS and Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, formerly known as al-Nusra Front.

The truce was mediated by Russia and Turkey, which respectively represented the Syrian government and the anti-Damascus militants.

Rouhani further hailed the great achievements made by the Syrian government, army and people in the fight against terrorists, particularly in the recently-liberated strategic city of Aleppo.

“The victory in Aleppo conveys this message to the terrorists that they will never be successful in the wrong path they have chosen [which is replete] with crime and bloodshed,” the Iranian president said.

He added that the liberation of Aleppo has prepared suitable grounds for field activities against terrorists and political measures meant to restore stability and security to Syria.

He expressed hope that future steps to solve the Syrian crisis and initiate peace talks would lead to the establishment of security for the Syrian people and the maintenance of the country’s territorial integrity.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has always stood by the Syrian nation in their resistance and at different political scenes, and will continue its support in the future,” Rouhani said, adding, “We are confident that the Syrian people will achieve a final victory and success.”

He further stressed the importance of reinforcing unity and coordination among Iran, Russia and Syria to help Damascus restore stability and sustainable security to the country.

The countrywide ceasefire in Syria came one week after the Syrian army announced its full control over Aleppo when the last remaining militants were evacuated along with civilians from the eastern sector of the city under a truce deal mediated by Ankara and Moscow.

Iran’s Support Pivotal in Syrians’ Fight against Terrorism

Muallem, for his part, said Iran’s full support for Syria has played and will play a leading role in the Arab state’s fight against terrorism.

He commended the support of Iran and Russia for the Syrian government and nation and called for more cooperation among the three countries in this regard.

The Syrian foreign minister also said Iran has an important position in the region and urged further enhanced ties with Tehran.

Muallem arrived in Tehran on Saturday for a day-long visit at the head of a high-ranking delegation. Earlier in the day, he held talks with senior Iranian officials, including Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani.

Syria Winner of Terrorist World War: Shamkhani

In his meeting with Muallem and Mamlouk, Shamkhani hailed great efforts made by the Syrian nation and government during years of fight against terrorist groups, saying Syria has emerged victorious in the terrorist world war against the country.

The senior Iranian official pointed to the ongoing nationwide ceasefire in Syria and said the country’s maintenance of its military power and its monitoring of all moves by the armed groups were the only way to ensure that the militants remained committed to the truce.

The ceasefire agreement excludes the most brutal of terror outfits operating in Syria, namely Daesh and Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, formerly known as al-Nusra Front.

Shamkhani further emphasized that any political path and negotiations which would weaken Syria’s legal government, give away parts of the country’s territory to terrorist groups or result in the foreign military occupation of the country “run counter to people’s interests and are a threat to regional countries and are doomed to failure.”

The SNSC secretary also said the liberation of Aleppo was a turning point in Syria’s political and military developments as well as the equations of power in the region.

“The war on Daesh [ISIS] and Jabhat al-Nusra (Jabhat Fateh al-Sham) terrorists will continue in Syria and the armed groups which are not following the terrorist front must make use of the ceasefire opportunity and return to the negotiating table with Syria’s legal government,” Shamkhani added.

He emphasized that a relentless fight against terrorism and intra-Syria talks would be the sole path to the restoration of peace and security to Syria.

The Iranian official said the liberation of Aleppo thwarted Western countries’ plot to partition the Middle East region and proved that coherence and coordination in the resistance front can lead to the victory against terrorists, Press TV reported.

The Syrian military announced on December 22 that it had gained full control of the northwestern city of Aleppo, having completely cleansed its eastern side of militants for the first time since 2012.

The victory came about despite support for the militants by the United States, Turkey, and some Arab countries in the Persian Gulf region.

‘Syria Will Never Allow Partition’

Muallem and Mamlouk said Syria would proceed with the relentless battle against terrorist groups and their sponsors.

They added that the Syrian government and nation would never allow their country’s division, the persistence of terrorists’ presence in Syria or any foreign military occupation.

New Year’s Congratulation in Trump’s Style

Trump New Year Tweet

In a post on his Twitter account, Trump congratulated ‘everyone’ on the New Christian Year, and used the expression ‘love’ at the end of the message!

However, his language was neither with love nor appropriate for a man of power, particularly one who is going to lad a country that claims to be a world superpower, and thinks the American culture needs no cultural interaction with other societies.

Have a thoughtful look at Trump’s New Year’s congratulation to reach the conclusion that George W. Bush was like a teacher of ethics and humility when compared with Trump:

“Happy News Year to all, including to my many enemies and those who have fought me and lost so badly they just don’t know what to do. Love!” Trump said in his message.

Syrian President’s Jacket Wins Admiration of Supporters

Syrian President’s Jacket

According to a Farsi report by Khorasan Newspaper, by wearing a jacket for the second time during his recent visit to the monastery of Saidnaya in Rif Dimashq Governorate, Syrian President al-Assad attracted the attention of his supporters.

“It is the same jacket he wore while visiting Jobar, Damascus, two years ago. Do you know any other president who wears a piece of cloth twice? Do you still ask us why we love Assad?” wrote Haidara, the son of Bahjat Suleiman, the former Syrian ambassador to Jordan, in his Twitter page.

Who Will Serve as Iran’s New Ambassador to Syria?

The empty position of Iranian ambassador to Syria has been hotly debated by conservatives in the Iranian Parliament, especially when a critical situation necessitated a more resolute Iranian embassy in Damascus.

Mehr news agency says Zarif has obtained President Rouhani’s consent to appoint Torkabadi as the new envoy to Damascus in a move to address such concerns.

Torkabadi served as Iran’s ambassador to Sudan (2010-14); he has also been Iran’s ambassador to Bahrain and Nigeria, and was for a time Iran’s chargé d’affaires in Kuwait. Back in Foreign Ministry, Torkabadi chaired the First Office of North and West Africa.

Iran’s embassy in Damascus had been run by a chargé d’affaires after Mohammad Reza Raouf Sheibani left the position who had begun service as part of a 5-year mission that ended in October 2016.
