Iran’s Anti-US Lawsuit Put in Motion

686bf0ae-aec6-46c0-8cf7-68dd68058d87

IRNA news agency quoted a statement by Iran’s Presidential Office as saying that the lawsuit concerned the US freezing of $2 billion worth of assets of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) and had been originally filed with the ICJ last June.

The statement said Iran recently presented to the Court a precise evaluation of the reparations owed by the US through more than 2,000 pages of documents.

The statement further added that presenting the documents, which had taken seven months to collect, was a necessary step for the start of the ICJ proceedings.

It also emphasized that Washington’s seizure of Iran’s assets was against the Treaty of Amity, Economic Relations, and Consular Rights which had been signed by the two countries in August 1955 – referred to as the 1955 Treaty – and was “still effective.”

Other assets that had been mentioned in the lawsuit were those which belonged to Iranian companies but which had been confiscated in the US by virtue of “baseless” rulings by American courts, the Presidential Office said.

The Iranian government accordingly urged the ICJ to urge the US to stop its violations of international obligations and make full reparations to Iran for the losses it incurred.

As per the statement, under ICJ rules, the US would have until September 1, 2017 to respond to Iran’s lawsuit.  The Court would accordingly invite both parties to hearings before issuing a final judgment.

The top story today was a US court ruling to suspend President Donald Trump’s visa ban on citizens of 7 Muslim-majority countries.

The fresh sanctions imposed by Trump’s administration on a number of Iranian individuals and companies, and Iran’s reaction to the move also received great coverage.

A number of newspapers also covered the remarks by an Iranian energy official about the revival of Iran’s controversial Crescent Deal with the United Arab Emirates. Iran is reportedly ready to export its natural gas to the Arab neighbouring country.

Eighth Wall Separating Americans and Mexicans

trump's wall
Cartoon by Ali Tajaddod
Mahmood Askarieh
Mahmood Askarieh – IFP Managing Editor and Owner

The Berlin Wall came down on November 9, 1989, marking the end of the Cold War era. Nevertheless, there are still other walls across the world separating humans because of their nationalities, religions or living standards. Politicians and military men have been the architects of these walls, whether those that have collapsed or the ones that still stand. Now, another wall is going to join the lot in order to separate Americans and Mexicans, a wall whose architect is neither a politician nor a general, but a capitalist! Perhaps that is why Donald Trump insists that neighbouring Mexico pay for the wall’s construction.

The Berlin Wall is now referred to as “The East Side Gallery” because hundreds of painters from across the globe have painted on it. The paintings all depict the association between the concept of the “wall” and dictatorship. Among the paintings on the wall there is one by an Iranian artist who emigrated to Germany years ago. He has hands-on experience of the Berlin Wall when it stood tall. He has also seen the wall collapse with his own eyes. On the remains of the wall he has created a work of art which portrays feelings of excitement, fear, hope and joy on people’s faces at the historic moment when the wall is broken open.

Kani Alavi, the painter, describes what he feels about US President Donald Trump’s executive orders which bar the nationals of seven countries from entering America and instruct the construction of a wall along the US-Mexico border.

“The US claims it is a democratic country and can even save the world with its policies. But then, it talks of building a wall. This is not in conformity with the country’s culture at all,” Alavi said in an interview with Deutsche Welle.

One of Alavi’s paintings has been showcased at the UN headquarters in New York. The painting delineates humans embracing each other from either side of the wall.

“When I think that now I’m not allowed to travel to the US and see the tableau I myself have painted, I ask myself why I painted it after all.”

Draw the line at the Middle East instead of building walls!

During his election campaign, Donald Trump pledged to prevent drug gangs and Mexicans from entering the US. When his remarks were met with strong popular objection, Trump said he meant those Mexicans who he regards as “criminals.” Now, bargaining is underway over who should bankroll the construction of the wall on the US-Mexico border. The row turned a phone conversation between Trump and his Mexican counterpart Enrique Peña Nieto into a war of words on January 27. The Mexican president has announced he will not even pay a single dollar for the realization of Trump’s election promises.

In the meantime, irrespective of whether Trump flew off the handle during his phone conversation with the Mexican president or whether any tension during the conversation is denied, the world experienced a key event which infuriated a considerable number of its inhabitants! And no one will ever deny this anger throughout the course of history. At a time when the world was proud of the collapse of all its arbitrary and geographical borders, and all humans around the globe, especially the elite and intellectuals, were taking pride in the fact that cultural differences have not only not divided nations and not led to crusades, but rather are a source of honour and dignity for the international community, a wall was built in the twinkling of an eye driving a wedge between the citizens of the US and those of seven other countries. The wall is one which is impossible to get over, even with the highest-flying planes!

The tragedy is that Donald Trump, the architect of the wall, has emerged from within a society and culture that claims to enjoy the world’s biggest democracy. Was the US presidential election rigged? How is ballot-stuffing possible in a well-organized system which serves as a “role model”? Is this the very same culture which is supposed to set an example to other nations?

At its apex of maturity, a so-called model of democracy and human rights bears a fruit like “Trump!”

Will such a system really have anything to offer? So far, hundreds of thousands of humans have lost their lives under the banner of “new order” and “democratization of the Middle East” projects. Thousands of towns, villages, schools, factories and the like have been destroyed. People in the Middle East, including those of these very seven countries, have been paying heavy prices for Washington’s unilateral wall building for years.

Of course, these walls have always been ridiculously short for the military as well as for White House warlords! I wish the US would draw a line at the wealth and resources of the regional countries. Lasting security together with global peace and tranquility is subject to US statesmen renouncing vanity and megalomania. In order to save nations and to ensure security and welfare for US citizens, the new guests of the White House should make this wise decision: They should forswear the “US feeling of self-styled mastership over the world” instead of building walls! The wall serves to block and separate people, no matter whether the wall is visible or not!

Iran’s 1979 Revolution Brought Us Gift of Freedom: Armenian Priest

Armenian Priest

Imam Khomeini managed to rise against the Pahlavi regime, defeat it and win freedom for the Iranian nation as well as the religious minorities in the country, said priest Masroup Ratoosian, currently serving in Grigor Lusavoritch Church in the Iranian capital of Tehran.

Independence and freedom were two of the most important achievements of the Islamic Revolution of Iran following the overthrow of the dictatorial and oppressive Pahlavi regime — that ruled the country from 1925-1979 — in 1979.

According to a Farsi report by Mizan, these two goals have always been pursued by all schools of thought.

During the Iranian nation’s battles and rallies against the Pahlavi regime, these two concepts were never exclusive to a certain group, party or school. All Iranians, regardless of what religion, attitude and way of thinking they had, strived for these two goals.

While the Pahlavi regime did its outmost to promote the unfounded and deviational thoughts and beliefs of the Baha’i cult in the Iranian society, monotheistic religions such as Islam, Christianity and Judaism as well as their followers were faced with a host of restrictions.

What follows is a brief account, narrated by Armenian priest Ratoosian, of the oppressions, restrictions and difficulties the Christian clergymen and non-Muslim people faced during the reign of Pahlavi regime in Iran:

“Every year, the day of the victory of the Islamic Revolution — this year, falling on February 10 — coincides with a sacred day in Christianity. It is either coincident with the Saint Sarkis (a Centurion in the Roman Empire reputed to possess the characteristics of piety, faith and valor) day or Saint Vardan (an Armenian military leader, a martyr and a saint of the Armenian Church) day. This year, it is concurrent with Saint Sarkis day.”

He noted that in 1979, the victory of the Islamic Revolution was coincident with Saint Vardan day.

Ratoosian said Imam Khomeini as well as the two Christian saints each fought with the oppressive regimes of their era and eventually, [all three] emerged victorious on the same day.

Referring to the role Iran’s Christian society played in the downfall of the Pahlavi regime, Ratoosian said, “At that time, I was doing my military service as a private at Lashgarak military base in Tehran. When Imam Khomeini issued the directive that soldiers were required to evacuate military bases and join the people on the streets, I also left the base and fought shoulder-to-shoulder with the zealous Iranian nation against the last king of Iran Mohammad-Reza Shah.

“Then — before the victory of the Islamic Revolution — the Pahlavi regime was promoting atheism and a number of people were drowning in sin. This situation was very agonizing for us Christians.”

During the Pahlavi reign, Christians were faced with a host of problems for holding their celebrations commemorating Saint Vardan’s valor, because he was known for repudiating the Persian religion and instigating an Armenian rebellion against the Sassanid (the last imperial dynasty in Persia before the rise of Islam) overlords, he recalled.

“The cruel regime neither liked him nor what he had done against the Sasanid Empire and, thus, imprisoned a number of Christian Armenians who wanted to hold the commemoration celebrations by hook or by crook. This is while, after the Islamic Revolution, Christians are permitted to hold their ceremonies conveniently.”

Commenting on the supports provided by the Islamic Republic of Iran and the country’s cultural institutes and organizations to facilitate the holding of the Armenians’ ceremonies, Atrin Babaeiance, who is responsible for the public relations of the Armenian Diocese of Tehran, said, “At present, we are provided with ample opportunities to hold our rituals. The related Iranian organizations prepare the grounds for us to freely and conveniently hold our rites as well as sport and cultural events.”

Assyrians, Zoroastrians and Jews, who are followers of other monotheistic religions, also enjoy a favourable condition in Iran, having their own temples and being permitted to carry out their religious, cultural and social activities with ease, he added.

Americans Won’t Tolerate Trump: UN Official

Farhan Haq

“American political apparatus and people won’t tolerate Trump and his unpredictable, hostile policies towards the domestic and foreign issues,” said Farhan Haq, the Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, in an exclusive interview with IRNA.

“During his first 10 days of presidency, Trump has shown his unreliable face to the people of the United States and the rest of the world.”

“American people, whether they have voted for Trump or not, expect their president to adopt coherent approaches toward problems,” he added.

However, he added, instead of encouraging the American society, Trump’s approaches make the majority of them worry about the future.

“Facing the challenge of domestic and international expectations, Trump will have to change his position; he would add to this anxiety otherwise, making the entire political apparatus, the Republican party included, confront him.”

The interviewer then referred to Trump not caring about domestic protests and strongly insisting on his positions, as well as his decision to change the US Homeland Security formation and appoint Steve Bannon, a racist politician, as a regular member of the decision-making committee, and asked Haq, “Don’t you consider such moves to be heavily damaging to the world before being confronted by the American political system?”

“I think this negligence won’t last long,” he answered. “The wave of domestic and international protests formed in Trump’s first hours of entrance to the White House will grow and urge him to revise his positions.”

He went on to say that as Trump has pointed to the improvement of the US economy and the consolidation of domestic security as his main objectives, he should inevitably keep his allies and satisfy them to be able to meet his commitments through ongoing economic exchanges and association with them.

Haq then commented that by abandoning the Trans-Pacific Partnership, Trump tightened the circle of the US trade in the world.

Trump’s decision [to abandon TPP] will give more room to China’s commercial manoeuvres, he added.

Trump and his advisors know that maintaining commercial relations with their allies is necessary for Washington’s competition with China, Haq noted.

“So they will have to care about their demands in other areas such as immigration.”

Asked about why António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, didn’t show any strong response to the ban on visa for Muslims and Iranians, Haq noted, “Guterres, who previously served as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, definitely considers it as a serious challenge.”

“His silence on this decision is due to a more in-depth analysis of the problem to strengthen his position against it.”

Spokesman Rejects UAE’s Claims on Iran’s Interference in Arab World

The Emirati official had better express his opinions with more realism and avoid repeating hackneyed and baseless claims, which have no result but the exacerbation of divergence among regional countries, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said on Saturday.

In a post on his Twitter account, Anwar Gargash claimed that Iran’s interference in the internal affairs of Arab countries had caused instability in the region and said Iran needed to cooperate with the Persian Gulf countries to hold dialogue based on transparent principles.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran, with the backing of its popular power, has well distinguished its interests and made all-out efforts to establish and maintain convergence, peace, stability and security in the region while regarding defense against hostile attitude and policies as a legitimate right of the Iranian nation,” Qassemi said.

He emphasized that Iran has always placed emphasis on the principles of dialogue, respect for sovereignty of countries and good neighborliness in the region and expressed its keenness to enjoy rational and balanced relations with all its neighboring states.

The Islamic Republic hopes that other regional countries would also understand the ongoing international circumstances and make more efforts to establish such relations, Qassemi said.

The Iranian spokesperson said the change of a policy of leveling accusations and unconstructive and useless claims about an undeniable truth regarding Iran’s effective and stabilizing role in the region would be among the first steps to strengthen cooperation and constructive interaction.

The allegations against Iran were leveled after the Emirati Foreign Ministry on Thursday summoned the Iranian chargé d’affaires in protest at what Abu Dhabi claims to be Tehran’s “provision of weapons” to Yemen’s Houthi Ansarullah fighters.

Abdul Rahim al-Awadi, the United Arab Emirates’ assistant minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation for legal affairs, handed the Iranian envoy a note of protest and said Iran’s provision of arms to the Houthis violated a number of United Nations Security Council resolutions, which prohibit such arms supplies.

The United Arab Emirates is a key Saudi ally in its deadly aggression against Yemen, which was launched in March 2015 in a bid to reinstall the ex-Yemeni government and crush the Houthi Ansarullah movement.

Iranian Administration Urged to Give US Citizens On-Arrival Visa

Sharif University

In a letter to President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, 72 professors from Iran’s prestigious Sharif University of Technology warned against the ramifications of the “discriminatory” travel ban on Iranian citizens by the administration of US President Donald Trump.

“Apart from the problems that the order has caused for the routine lives of our fellow countrymen in Iran and America, the propaganda aimed at justifying the measure will harm our cultural, religious and historical image as well as our national interests and it can bring about extremely detrimental impacts,” the letter read.

The top scholars called on the Iranian administration to “exercise restraint” and adopt a “proper and innovative” policy in an attempt to “nullify the harmful impacts” of Trump’s order.

The academics suggested that the Iranian administration issue two-week tourist visas for US citizens upon arrival at airports over the next 90 days, allowing them to “travel to Iran and closely experience the hospitality of the peace-seeking Iranians and Muslims.”

Such an initiative will highlight Iran’s “ethics-oriented policy” in the global arena and revive international support for the country, the letter pointed out.

In a move which sparked widespread censure, the new US president signed a sweeping executive order on January 27 to suspend refugee arrivals and ban citizens of Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen from traveling to the US.

On Sunday, the Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned the Swiss ambassador to Tehran, Giulio Haas, who represents the US interests in Tehran, to protest against the US president’s discriminatory decision.

The director general for the Americas at Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Mohammad Keshavarz-Zadeh, told the Swiss envoy that Trump’s executive order was issued under “fictitious, discriminatory and unacceptable” pretexts and ran counter to human rights conventions and a legal and consular treaty signed between Tehran and Washington in August 15, 1955.

Putin’s Envoy to Discuss Syrian Crisis with Iranian Officials in Tehran

Alexander Lavrentiev

Lavrentiev, who will arrive in Tehran on Sunday, is to sit down with Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani.

The Russian envoy will discuss ways to hold more negotiations on the promotion of political and security initiatives after the recent Syrian peace talks in the Kazakh capital of Astana.

He is scheduled to inform the SNSC secretary about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s stance on the ongoing regional issues and the need for bolstering multilateral cooperation in the fight against terrorism to put an end to the Syrian crisis.

Last month, Astana hosted the latest round of Syria peace talks, organized by Iran, Russia and Turkey.

The two-day intra-Syrian talks between Damascus and opposition groups concluded on January 24, with Tehran, Moscow and Ankara agreeing on the establishment of a trilateral mechanism to support the ceasefire in Syria and monitor possible violations.

The three countries also played intermediary roles at the talks, where the United Nations envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, was also present.

Syria has been fighting foreign-sponsored militancy over the past six years.

De Mistura estimated in August last year that more than 400,000 people had been killed in the Syrian crisis until then. The UN has stopped its official casualty count in Syria, citing its inability to verify the figures it receives from various sources.

21 Countries to Attend Tehran Int’l Tourism Exhibition

tourisme Expo

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Farhad Aminian said Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, China, Brazil, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, France, Greece, South Korea, Vietnam, Cyprus, India, Germany, Georgia, Cambodia, Maldives, Macedonia, Kazakhstan and Yemen are going to take part in the international event.

He said 65 companies from those countries will showcase their potentials in the tourism industry.

According to Aminian, the number of participating countries in last year’s edition of the exhibition was 12.

He said 381 domestic companies will also be present at the exhibit this year.

Aminian went on to say that a number of programs, including workshops, forums and seminars on different aspects of tourism will be held on the sidelines of the expo.

The Tehran International Permanent Fairground is scheduled to host the 10th Tehran International Tourism Exhibition on February 6-9.

The motto of the exhibit is “See Iran Differently”.

Iran has hammered out an investment package worth $25 billion to revitalize its tourism industry.

With a large number of attractive natural and historical sites, Iran is one of the most touristic countries in the world.

Visitor numbers have soared since Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany), reached a nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), on July 14, 2015 and started implementing it on January 16, 2016.

Back in October, Masoud Soltanifar, the then head of Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHHTO), said foreign tourist arrivals in the country has been more than double that of the global average since the implementation of the JCPOA.

New US Sanctions against Iran Violate Nuclear Deal: Iranian MPs

trump

Falahat pishehHeshmatollah Falahatpisheh, a member of Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, stressed that the US administration’s move is definitely a breach of nuclear deal.

“Based on the nuclear deal, imposing sanctions on Iran violates the deal,” he noted, referring to sanctions imposed on 25 Iranian individuals and entities by US President Donald Trump’s administration on Friday.

“Violation of JCPOA was started in Obama’s administration, and Trump is also continuing the same path under different pretexts,” he went on to say, according to a Farsi report by ICANA.

He further urged the Iranian Foreign Ministry to pursue the issue, and said, “Trump will definitely regret such moves in the future, and until that time, Iran should behave in a way that does not turn to a target for US radicalism.”

Alaeddin BoroujerdiAlaeddin Boroujerdi, the chairman of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, also said on Saturday that the US move is a breach of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

It has its roots in Washington’s anger over the defeats of terrorists that it supports in the Middle East region, the Iranian parliamentarian said.

The recent important developments in Syria and the historical defeat inflicted on terrorists in Aleppo, on the one hand, and the defeat of ISIS in Iraq’s Mosul, on the other hand, created a situation for the US that led to imposition of the new sanctions, Boroujerdi went on to say, as reported by Tasnim.

Washington added more Iranian individuals and entities to its anti-Iran sanction list on Friday. The US Treasury Department said it has published a list of 13 Iranian figures and 12 entities facing new sanctions.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the measure and vowed to take reciprocal action against American individuals and companies with a role in creating and supporting extremist groups in the region.

“In response to the new measure by the United States and as a reciprocal action, the Islamic Republic of Iran will impose legal restrictions on a number of American individuals and companies which have had a role in creating and supporting extremist terrorist groups in the region or assist in the killing and suppression of defenseless people in the region,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday evening.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the list of the targeted American figures and companies will be released later.
