Asghar Faradi

Australian film website Inside Film wrote that “a three time APSA winner, Farhadi’s role as Jury President marks the fifth APSA ceremony of which he will be a part and the first time an Iranian filmmaker serves as President of the APSA International Jury. The renowned writer/director is one of the only filmmakers to receive APSA nominations for three different films across the seven-year history of the event and his films have received an impressive ten nominations in total.”

“APSA truly cherishes the ongoing relationship with filmmakers such as Asghar Farhadi, whose incredible body of work has grown alongside APSA. It is with great pleasure that we welcome Asghar Farhadi back to APSA and to Australia as the President of the International Jury. As an APSA nominee, award winner, film fund winner and Academy member, he is unparalleled in his association with and understanding of the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. We greatly look forward to announcing the remaining members of the jury who will join Mr Farhadi,” said Michael Hawkins, Chairman of the Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

Speaking from Tehran, Asghar Farhadi said ‘‘I am very proud of my long association with APSA and am very much looking forward to fulfilling the honourable role of President of the Jury for 2014. It is truly special to be able to celebrate the outstanding cinema of the Asia Pacific region, which produces half of the world’s film, and it will be both a pleasure and a challenge to determine the 2014 APSA winners with the International Jury in Brisbane in December.”

In 2010, Farhadi was one of four recipients of the inaugural MPA APSA Academy Film Fund for his film Jodaiye Nader Az Simin (A Separation), which went on to win the Golden Bear at the 2011 Berlinale, and both the 2012 Golden Globe® and 2012 Academy Award® for Best Foreign Language Film. A Separation won the 2011 APSA for Best Feature Film and was also nominated in the categories of Best Screenplay, Achievement in Directing, and Best Performance by an Actor for Peyman Maadi.

The 8th Asia Pacific Screen Awards presented by Treasury Casino & Hotel will be held in Brisbane, Australia on Thursday 11 December 2014 at Brisbane’s spectacular City Hall.

Iran can target enemy interests across globe: Cmdr.

A senior Iranian commander has warned that Iran is capable of targeting the enemy’s strategic interests across the globe in case of any act of aggression against the Islamic Republic.

“We can target the crucial interests of the enemy at any location in the world if it harbors any ill intention,” said Deputy Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Brigadier General Hossein Salami addressing worshippers at Tehran’s Friday prayers.

Iran’s air defense can destroy the enemy’s aircraft at any altitude and the country’s drones are equipped with state-of-the-art operational capability, he added.

“We have accumulated and built up so much power that even if all of the enemy’s options unfold at the same time, it will bring them (enemies) nothing but defeat and disappointment,” the general underlined.

The remarks come following US President Barack Obama’s recent aggressive statements against Tehran.

In a commencement address at the US Military Academy on Wednesday, Obama said there is an opportunity to resolve disputes over Iran’s nuclear energy program but reiterated that Washington reserves “all options” against Iran, alluding to military action.

The Iranian commander also called on the Iranian nuclear negotiators to steadfastly uphold the Iranian nation’s rights in the course of the ongoing talks with the P5+1.

Iran and the six world powers have been discussing ways to iron out differences and start drafting a final deal that would end the West’s dispute with Iran over the country’s nuclear energy program.

Deputy Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Brigadier General Masoud Jazayeri has also warned that any US act of aggression against Iran will sound the death knell for Israel and see war engulfing the United States.

The top Iranian commander compared Obama’s remarks to “unattainable childish dreams.”

Soltanifar said that Iran is to accelerate visa issuance for foreign tourists, especially for the religious ones, within the next two or three years.

He called for encouraging foreign tourists to visit religious cities, including Mashhad, Qom, Shiraz, Mashhad Ardehal and Shahr-e Rey.

He went on to say that nearly 2.1 million religious tourists visited Iran last year, 1.6 million of whom were from Iraq and 500,000 others came from the Persian Gulf countries.

“We are trying to increase this number to 5 million in the next few years,” the official added.

The official noted that religious tourism would lead to cultural exchanges, job creation and bringing in foreign exchange revenue.

Iran has taken part in several international tourism fairs such as the Caucasian international tourism fair in Georgia in 2011 and the 2012 Borsa International Tourism Exchange (BIT) in Italy to better introduce the country’s tourist attractions.

Supreme Leader Calls for Muslims’ Vigilance against Enemies’ Divisive Plots

Addressing several foreign ambassadors of Islamic countries to Tehran on Tuesday, Ayatollah Khamenei underscored that the bullying powers are seeking to sow discord among Muslims to cover up their own problems.

The Supreme leader further underscored that the hegemonic powers are trying to create Shiiteophobia and Iranophobia to safeguard the Zionist regime.

Iran has always attached crucial importance to paving the way for the enhancement of interaction and cooperation among Muslim nations in a bid to strengthen Muslim unity throughout the world.

In June 2013, Ayatollah Khamenei asked Muslim nations to grow united against the arrogant powers, warning that gaps in the Muslim community will create an opportunity for the Zionist regime to implement its plots against them.

“Unity and companionship among Muslims is an urgent obligation,” Ayatollah Khamenei said in Tehran at the time.

He pointed out that massacre, bloodshed, blind terrorism and its related catastrophes as well as the opportunities created for the occupying Zionist regime are all outcomes of division and difference in the Islamic Ummah.

“Today is the day of test for the Muslims and Islamic states, and Muslim nations should be completely vigilant,” the Iranian Supreme Leader cautioned.

Ayatollah Khamenei warned of the West’s campaign against Islam and the Muslim world, and said the western enemies are showing their hostility towards Muslims very openly, “thus, the Islamic Ummah should reinvigorate its intrinsic ability and power factors, and one of the most important factors in this regard is unity, integration and focus on commonalities”.

In relevant remarks earlier in 2013, Ayatollah Khamenei warned Muslim nations about the plots hatched by the enemies to sow discord in the Islamic community.

Addressing a group of Iranian officials and the foreign participants of the 26th International Islamic Unity Conference in Tehran in February, Ayatollah Khamenei felicitated birthday of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and stated that unity among the Islamic community was the main mission of the Holy Prophet.

The Leader pointed to the wave of the Islamic awakening in the Muslim World, and reiterated that the world arrogance targeted the Islamic Awakening movements and aims to divide the Muslims pitting them against each other.

“Therefore, the main duty of the elites in the Muslim world is to help expose the enemies’ plots and take serious efforts to materialize the motto of Islamic unity,” the Leader underlined.

President Rouhani: Iranian Hotels Heavy Tourist Traffic

“Many hotels in Shiraz, Isfahan, Yazd and Kashan have been reserved for the Iran tours of European firms until the end of (the Iranian months of) Aban and Azar (November and December 2014), which shows the growing trend of tourism in Iran,” Rouhani said, addressing the managers and deputies of Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization in Tehran on Monday.

He said that the number of tourist visits to Iran have tripled in the first two months of the current Iranian year (which started on March 21) compared with the same period last year.

Rouhani called for the further activities and investment of the private sector in Iran’s tourism industry.

In relevant remarks earlier this month, President Rouhani stressed his government’s support for investment in Iran’s economic sector by the country’s expatriates who are now living in different world countries.

“The government’s approach in the development of the tourism sector is based on preparing the bed for the presence of the private sector, and we welcome the presence of Iranian investors (who live) in or outside the country in this ground,” Rouhani told a meeting with the lawmakers of the Western Kohkilouyeh and Boyerahmad province.

He underlined that the government will grant the necessary facilities and aids to the private sector to help improve and boost the country’s air and land transiting capacity and hotel construction to attract more tourists.

President Rouhani also stressed the need for bringing back the Iranian elites from abroad and attracting even the elites of other countries to help Iran’s progress and advancement in different political, economic and cultural areas.

“We should attract the elites of other countries who like Iran, in addition to our own elites who are now residing in foreign countries,” Rouhani said, addressing a ceremony to honor the country’s top university professors, artists and elites.

The president noted that for the attraction of elites, other bodies like the parliament should also help the government to achieve its goals.

“In the countries that have made progress, their governments, parliaments, specialized bodies and private sectors have all been linked to each other,” he added.

He reiterated that attracting elites can help to the country’s advancement in political, economic and cultural spheres.

Alexander Novak, Russia’s Energy Minister, said the two countries have been negotiating to sign an agreement on a package of energy projects worth USD 10 billion.

He said the package of projects includes construction of hydroelectric power plants, participation of Russian firms in supplying equipment and renovating Iran’s power supply network, Interfax news agency reported.

Novak added that the next round of talks between Iran and Russia to finalize the deal will be held in Tehran in September.

He further noted that Tehran seeks to expand cooperation with Moscow in the field of nuclear power generation.

It was reported earlier this week that Russia plans to sign a contract with Iran this year to build two more nuclear reactors at its Bushehr power plant as part of a broader deal for constructing up to eight reactors in the country.

Iran Hopes for Restoration of Stability in Thailand

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham on Sunday expressed concern over the recent developments and the spread of turmoil in Thailand, and underlined the need for the restoration of peace and security in the country.

She referred to Thailand as the Islamic Republic of Iran’s friend, and expressed the hope that a government elected by people would soon be formed in the country.

Thailand has been the scene of a political crisis since the 2006 military coup that deposed the then prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Democratic development in Thailand has been interrupted by 19 actual or attempted coups since 1932.

In the latest coup, Thailand woke up to its first day under military leadership on Thursday since the country’s army chief took control of the government following months of deadly clashes.

General Prayuth Chan-ocha said the move was to allow the country to “return to normal quickly”.

The constitution is being suspended, and all cabinet ministers must report to the military, he said.

Source: Iran’s Zarif, EU’s Ashton to Review N. Talks in Turkey

An informed source at Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the two top nuclear negotiators are scheduled to hold a meeting in Istanbul, though it did not specify an exact date for the gathering.

“On the agenda of these (upcoming) talks will be a study of the trend in the progress of the (nuclear) negotiations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Group 5+1,” the source added.

Earlier on May 22, Al-Monitor website had quoted an unnamed diplomatic source as saying that Zarif and Ashton will meet in Istanbul on Monday or perhaps on Tuesday.

The meeting will take place some two weeks after senior diplomats representing Iran and the sextet of world powers (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) concluded the latest round of nuclear talks in Vienna.

Ashton coordinates diplomacy with Iran on behalf of the six nations (also known as the P5+1 or E3+3) in the marathon talks with the aim of hammering out a final nuclear deal, meant to end years of Western standoff over Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program.

The next round of high-profile negotiations between Iran and the sextet are slated for June 16 to 20, again in Austria’s Vienna.
