Real Oil Price is over $70 per Barrel: Iranian MP

The spokesman for the Iranian Parliament’s Presiding Board, Behrouz Nemati, said the real oil price surpasses $70 per barrel, calling on the OPEC’s member states to agree on an effective strategy in their forthcoming ordinary meeting in the Austrian capital of Vienna on May 25 to achieve the price target by sustaining the balance between themselves in crude production.

According to a Farsi report by ICANA, Nemati said it is likely that OPEC members decide to extend the deal to freeze oil output for another couple of months.

“Currently, a balance has been attained between OPEC members in terms of crude production, which will help regulate the global oil market. This balance is required to be maintained in the future.”

The new atmosphere pervading the market requires the OPEC members to be committed to the oil output freeze deal and place adopting strategies to regulate the market on agenda, he stressed.

“Real oil price exceeds $70 per barrel. It does not stand at $50 or $55 per barrel.”

 

OPEC’s Leniency towards Some States

He noted that currently, a number of OPEC members’ oil production surpasses their output quota, adding the organization is, at present, showing leniency towards a number of its member states such as Iraq, which is struggling with a host of internal problems, allowing them to raise their output far above their production ceiling.

Nemati said OPEC’s influential members have a determining role in implementing and maintaining the new system.

“Given the talks held in previous OPEC meetings, the freezing trend would, most probably, continue in the future, which would help the oil market maintain its stability.”

 

Oil Freeze Commitments

Nemati stressed that Iran has been and will be committed to the recent agreement by the organization’s members on freezing oil output quota, adding OPEC member states will support any decision on extending the deal to freeze their output as they seek to regulate the oil market and prevent any probable drop in crude prices.

The dominance of the economic spirit in ensuring countries’ stability and fiscal sustainability, over the political spirit, can guarantee a bright future for the oil market.

Speaking in a ceremony in Isfahan, Iranian Minister of Science, Research and Technology Mohammad Farhadi declared thanks to the government’s support in the past 4 years, knowledge-based firms have managed to export $500 million worth of goods to other countries.

Rouhani’s administration has been one of the strong backers of knowledge-based companies as they are a valid source for promoting entrepreneurship and putting the army of jobless on the payroll, Financial Tribune reported.

Farhadi said, “39 technology parks and 3,000 science-based companies are now operating in Iran. Iran has 2,500 centres of higher education teaching science-based courses.”

He added that the administration is in the process of promoting ‘third generation universities.’

A third generation university is a global trend for the integration of universities and business; they are seen as a way for universities to have a source of income from research conducted on their campus. Courses in these educational institutions are responsive to modern demands, providing courses like computer gaming, programming and micro-science.

Renewable Energy Firms Can Use Tax Incentives in Iran

Mohammad Khazai, who also is head of the Organization for Investment, Economic and Technical Assistance, told ILNA that the 20-year guaranteed power output purchase by the government from the private companies is a major incentive to boost investments in renewables. Depending on the region that investors choose to set up renewable plants, they will be granted between five and 13 years of tax exemption, he said.

“Equipment imported to be used in the renewable sector are also duty-free if their quality and efficiency comply with the standards of the Ministry of Industry,” Khazai noted.

Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian recently said that investors in renewable projects who incorporate domestically-made equipment will be allowed to sell their electricity at rates that are 30% higher than normal tariffs. Khazai recalled that one of the administration’s main policies is to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and move toward clean and environmentally-friendly fuels as well as renewable energy.

A delegation visited Germany last week to discuss prospects for renewable collaboration.

Khazai underlined that over the past four years, 48 renewable projects, worth $3.6 billion, have been ratified by the government. Some projects have gone on stream and the rest are in the development phase. Data show that power production from renewables has experienced a three-fold rise since mid-2013.

“According to the sixth five year economic development plan (2017-22), 1% of the annual national budget must be allocated for incentives to encourage renewable investments,” he said.  Representatives of 195 countries including Iran negotiated a historic agreement in Paris last December to curb global emissions of greenhouse gases and limit the planet’s warming to under 2°C, preferably 1.5°C, by 2100.

Iran has pledged to increase the share of renewables in its power mix to 7,500 MW by 2030.  According to government data, installed power production capacity of renewables, including solar and wind, is approximately 240 MW, which accounts for just 0.3% of the country’s total electricity generation capacity.

Trump Administration Holds Talks with Iran over US Prisoners

Speaking in his weekly press conference on Monday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said the representatives of Trump administration recently raised the issue of one or two Iranian-American dual citizens held for certain reasons in Iran’s prisons.

The American side raised the issue on the sidelines of the JCPOA Joint Commission meeting recently held in the Austrian capital of Vienna, Qassemi added, according to a Farsi report by Etemad.

However, he noted, Iran has no talks with the US, and what exchanged in JCPOA Joint Commission meetings are nuclear-related and JCPOA-related issues and bilateral talks frequently held between Iran and other sides.

“We still do not have any instruction for holding talks with the US on issues other than the nuclear deal,” he added.

In the past, for humanitarian reasons, Iran and the US had contacts on the issue of certain prisoners and the Iranians held in the US, which led to positive results, Qassemi said.

Nevertheless, he stressed, that happened during the previous US administration.

Details of GEM TV Owner’s Murder in Istanbul

The owner of GEM TV, a group of Persian-language entertainment satellite channels headquartered in Dubai, the UAE, Saeid Karimian, along with his Kuwaiti-British partner, was shot in his car in Istanbul, Turkey, on Saturday evening (April 29) by individuals whose identities are unknown. They both died in hospital due to severe injuries.

According to a Farsi report by Tabnak news website, a Jeep SUV, with the plate number of HD 9999 34, had approached Karimian’s luxurious car at about 20:15 on Saturday and forced it to a halt by blocking its path, before, two men, whose faces were covered, got out of it and shot Karimian’s automobile. Karimian and his companion died en route to the hospital due to the severity of their injuries.

Despite reports by most Turkish sources, which said that Karimian’s companion was apparently his Kuwaiti-British partner, a report by CNN Türk rejected such claims, saying that the second slain individual has been an Iranian person. Thus, doubts still exist about the real identity of the second murdered man.

Following the incident, the assassins burned their car and vanished into thin air which shows that they had plans for their operation as well as detailed knowledge of the move and measures Istanbul’s police would make in such circumstances.

Operations are underway by the Istanbul police to identify and capture the murderers. It is alleged that Karimian had set up the satellite channel using unsustainable financial aid and had, later, channelled it into his personal projects, a move which had apparently led to the loss of the monetary resources and angered his creditors.

A number of the actors and actresses who have parted from the GEM Group, the owner and manager of the GEM Television, over the past 12 months, have confirmed that the group has been faced with a financial crisis over the past year and has had difficulty paying the remainder of their salaries. Among the possibilities is that the economic conflicts brought Karimian to reckoning. In case it is proved that Karimian’s murdered companion was his partner, this scenario will be more likely.

In addition, there are rumours about Karimian’s links with the terrorist Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO), and thus the whole incident might be an intra-organizational revenge by the MKO’s agents. However, Karimian had earlier denied having any contacts with the MKO.

Nevertheless, nothing is certain about the case and the incident. Further investigation into the dimensions of the incident is required to form a more accurate judgement about it.

 

Iran’s President Congratulates Weightlifters on Asian Title

In a message issued on Sunday, President Rouhani hailed the weightlifters’ success as another sign of the competence of the country’s youths and their ambition to “conquer the peaks of glory and build a better future”.

He further congratulated the Iranian nation and expressed gratitude to the champions and medalists as well as others who contributed to the victory.

The president further prayed to God, the Almighty, for continuation of the achievements of the weightlifting team and all other Iranian athletes.

Iran claimed the 2017 Asian Weightlifting Championship title on Saturday. The Iranian team went on podium in Asia after five years.

Sajjad Anoushiravani’s men won the championship with 562 points.

Iran took four medals in the competition, which was held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.

Saleh Cheraghi and Ayoub Mousavi won two silver medals in the 85kg and 94kg weight classes respectively.

Mohammadreza Barari won a gold medal in the 105kg class and Ali Hashemi seized a bronze in the class.

All Enemy Plots against Iran’s Revolution Failed: IRGC Commander

“Thank God, all the plots hatched against the Islamic Revolution by the enemies, on top of them the US, Israel and despicable and anti-Islam Saudi Arabia, have ended in failure,” Major General Jafari said in an address to a cultural ceremony on Sunday.

He further referred to the spread of the revolution’s discourse to other countries, saying, “Today, 38 years after the (victory of the 1979 Islamic) Revolution, we are witnessing resistance and the Islamic Awakening movement (in the region).”

The Islamic Awakening refers to the Islamic movement which started with the Tunisian revolution and led to the uprisings in other countries like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Yemen and Bahrain.

The commander went on to say that the spread of the Iranian nation’s spirit of resistance to other countries is the reason why the US and other countries have faced defeat in Syria, Iraq and Yemen.

Syria has been gripped by civil war fomented by foreign-backed terrorists since March 2011.

In recent years, Iraq has also been facing the threat of terrorism, mainly posed by the Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorist group believed to be backed by the US and its allies.

As for Yemen, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies have been carrying out deadly airstrikes on the Arabian Peninsula country since March 2015 in an attempt to restore power to the fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

Nearly 12,000 Yemenis, including women and children, have lost their lives in the deadly military campaign but the Saudi regime and its allies have failed to achieve their objective in Yemen.

Let’s Turn Persian Gulf into Sea of Amity: Iran’s Zarif

“Through cooperation with each other, the [Persian Gulf] regional countries can fulfill their interests and defend themselves against threats,” wrote Zarif in a note on the occasion of National Persian Gulf Day on Sunday. A portion of the text appeared on Zarif’s Instagram account later in the day.

Zarif noted that the Persian Gulf continues to suffer from “interference by big powers and their destructive role in the creation of wars and crises” in the region.

Iran, based on its strategic policies, calls for negotiations and joint cooperation with its neighboring countries in order to solve regional crises, added Zarif.

“We, the inhabitants of both sides of the Persian Gulf, can, despite the existence of some differences, turn this waterway into the sea of friendship,” Zarif stressed.

Iran designated April 30 as National Persian Gulf Day to highlight the fact that the waterway has been referred to by historians and ancient texts as “Persian” since the Achaemenid Empire was established in what is now modern day Iran.

While historical documents show that the waterway has always been referred to as the “Persian Gulf,” certain Arab states and their allies have recently mounted efforts to remove “Persian” from the name of the waterway.

National Persian Gulf Day also marks the anniversary of the dislodging of Portuguese military forces from the Strait of Hormuz in 1622, during the reign of Safavid king Shah Abbas I.

“Sometimes we hear and have heard in the past that certain individuals say, ‘when we came along and assumed responsibility, we managed to take away the shadow of war over the country,’” the Leader told a group of workers in Tehran Sunday.

“No. These statements are not right. It is the presence of the people that has removed the shadow of war, and not the authorities,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

“When you see that the impertinent and bull-necked enemies are refraining from taking any harsh action against the Islamic Republic, it is because of the presence of the people. They fear the people. They are literally afraid,” the Leader added.

Ayatollah Khamenei’s remarks came ahead of the presidential election in Iran on May 19 which is expected to be a close race.

The Leader said, “The beloved Iranian people should know that their presence in various arenas is determining. It is determining for national security; if the people come to the scene, the country will remain secure.”

“When the people are present at the scene, the enemy which seeks to confront the establishment has to beat retreat and forgo an encroachment,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

“When a gap is created between the nation and the establishment and the nation is not present at the scene, they (the enemies) can do whatever they want,” the Leader added.
