55 Million Start Voting in Turkey’s Landmark Referendum

Some 55 million Turkish voters are eligible to cast votes today following a divisive campaign that was launched in October 2016 when the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) announced its support to the ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) long-anticipated project of replacing the current government system with a presidential system with power concentrated in one hand.

The MHP’s support represented a U-turn from its previous views and came in the wake of the failed July 2016 coup attempt that pushed the nationalist party to endorse the AKP’s plan to ostensibly strengthen the Turkish state against such potential attempts in the future.

Parliament approved the amendments in late January with 339 votes from the AKP-MHP alliance while the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) and Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) stood against government system alteration, Hurriyet Daily reported.

If the package is approved, the president will be able to retain ties with the political party he or she belongs to.

As part of the changes, both the office of the prime minister and the cabinet will be abolished while the president will acquire all executive powers with the authority to issue decrees on the state’s structure as well as its functions.

The changes also grant authority to the president to issue decrees within the executive jurisdiction, declare a state of emergency and appoint public officials. But presidential decrees will not be permitted on issues concerning human rights or basic freedoms, or to override existing laws.

The president will be able to declare a state of emergency without necessary cabinet approval and to draft the budget, which is currently drawn up by parliament. The changes will allow the president to dissolve the parliament which will trigger the renewal of presidential and parliamentary elections simultaneously.

Iran Becomes Second Supplier of S. Korea’s Crude Oil: Report

According to customs data released in Seoul on Saturday, the world’s fifth-largest crude importer and one of Tehran’s biggest customers shipped in 5.68 million tonnes of Iranian crude in the first three months of 2017, or 463,234 bpd, up 92.4 percent from the 2.96 million tonnes imported during the same period a year ago.

Iran moved into place as the second biggest oil exporter to South Korea in the first quarter of 2017, from the fifth place a year before.

Imports from Iran’s closest rival Saudi Arabia in March were down 2.6% from 3.61 million a month ago, South Korea’s customs data showed.

For the first quarter of 2017, South Korea imported 36.94 million tonnes of crude, or 3.01 million bpd, up 4.6 percent from 35.32 million tonnes a year earlier, Reuters reported.

Iran’s Ministry of Petroleum said early this month that the country’s total exports of crude oil and condensate had surpassed 3 million barrels per day, a level not seen for at least the past six years.

Iran Needs No One’s Permission to Build Missiles: President

“We have repeatedly declared that strengthening the defensive prowess of Iran’s Armed Forces is only aimed at defending the country and will never be used against another country,” Rouhani said in a ceremony in Tehran on Saturday to unveil new domestically-manufactured defense achievements.

“[Striking] a regional balance and maintaining the defensive and deterrent power of a pivotal country like Iran, which has endangered big powers’ interests through its great [Islamic] Revolution and is conveying the message of justice and freedom to the world, are necessary,” he added.

He pointed to several crises in the Middle East and across the world and said, “In our region, we have witnessed different crimes and acts of aggression by regional countries and sometimes by big powers and the US.”

The Iranian president emphasized that the “powers’ intervention and the cancerous tumor of Israel” have always been a source of concern and insecurity in the Middle East.

Big powers have always sought to serve their own interests in the region, he said.

“Even if our region were completely secure and major powers were not present there, a country still needs deterrent power and the region requires balance,” Rouhani stated.

He warned of further problems if the regional balance was disturbed.

The Iranian chief executive further stressed the importance of remaining vigilant, maintaining preparedness and boosting national resistance.

The Iranian Defense Ministry on Saturday showcased its recent technological achievements, including a domestically-made jet, named Kowsar, designed for training purposes and other items.

A tactical drone, dubbed Mohajer-6, the Nasir anti-ship cruise missile, Fakur air-to-air missile and the Qaher F-313 fighter jet were also put on display.

Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan said the production of the Qaher F-313 and Kowsar jets was “a prelude to the production of heavy aircraft.”

He further announced plans to domestically manufacture heavy jet engines.

Iran’s defense gains, massive backing for diplomatic efforts: Zarif

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the Islamic Republic’s achievements in the defense sector provides “huge support” for the country’s dignified diplomatic endeavors.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad’s post on Instagram on April 15, 2017

Zarif made the comment on his official Instagram account on Saturday after paying a “three-hour visit” to the exhibition of Iran’s achievements in defense industries.

He said the Iranian Armed Forces and defense experts showed that “through exemplary self-belief in the face of foreign pressure and sanctions and by relying on national capabilities, might and know-how” can manufacture various types of defense equipment, “from advanced fighters to tanks and from the most advanced radars to the most effective air defense systems.”

They are also “strongly safeguarding the territorial integrity of beloved Iran,” the top Iranian diplomat added.

Iran has recently made major breakthroughs in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing important military equipment and hardware.

The Islamic Republic says its military power poses no threat to other countries and is merely based on the doctrine of deterrence.

The US and its allies claim that Iran’s missile tests violate UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed the July 2015 nuclear agreement reached between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries, the five permanent members of the council plus Germany.

The resolution calls upon Iran not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launches using such ballistic missile technology.

Iran has, however, repeatedly stressed that its missile program is not a violation of Resolution 2231, adding that its missiles are not manufactured for nuclear-delivery purposes.

Literally ‘Everyone’ in Iran Can Run for President! 0

Based on the figures by Iran’s Elections Headquarters, a record-high number of 1,636 figures, including 1,499 men and 137 women, from all walks of life ranging in age from 18 to 92 registered to compete in Iran’s upcoming presidential election, among which are weird, funny and interesting characters who have brought the registration process for the Iranian vote into social media spotlight.

According to a report by IFP, the registration of so many people to contest in Iran’s May 19 presidential elections, on the one hand, indicates the opportunity given to all Iranian people to make their dream come true and play the main role in governing their country, and on the other hand implies that the current electoral regulations are so deficient that allows every person, regardless of their qualifications, to register for such an important position.

Who Has Not Registered?

Virtually anybody has the right to sign up to run in Iran’s presidential vote. Nevertheless, in order to be qualified by the Guardian Council to stand for the office, as stipulated in Iran’s Constitution there are a number of formal restrictions: Potential candidates must not be under 18, they are required to be among the country’s “religious and political personalities,” hold Iranian citizenship and believe in the principles of the Islamic republic and the country’s official religion.

In addition to the prominent political figures who have signed up for the presidential competition and meet the criteria for the position, numerous individuals have signed up for the race who vividly and extraordinarily fail to be qualified for the post and fall short of the necessary standards. Their presence has, however, become a source of entertainment for those who follow news about the upcoming election and a main topic for domestic and foreign media.

Aside from the striking age difference between the youngest, 18, and the oldest, 92, applicant, a large number of other factors have added to the weirdness of the bewildering array of the individuals who have signed up for the contest.

Among these interesting presidential hopefuls are two young identical twins, Hassan and Hossein Seyyedkhani. Their striking facial similarity must be what they have counted on as their trump card. Their picture, posted on social media, shows them standing in front of the portal of the Ministry of Interior, raising each other’s hands as a sign of [perhaps] victory.

Speaking to media, Hassan said if elected, he would appoint his twin brother as foreign minister. Addressing the reporters, Hossein noted that he refrained from registering out of respect for his brother, who, he said, is his elder by two minutes.

Literally ‘Everyone’ in Iran Can Run for President! (24)

Although not surpassing the twins in weirdness, the 19-year-old teenager from Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province in Western Iran is not a character to be overlooked easily. After signing up for Iran’s 12th presidential race, he listed his main plans as creating jobs and rescuing people from hardship.

Literally ‘Everyone’ in Iran Can Run for President!Abol-Qassem Khaki is a factory guard in the central Iranian province of Yazd.  He says he plans to take a trip to the US and swim a race against the US President Donald Trump. Khaki added he also plans to provide ‘comfortable houses’ for young Iranians. He stressed that he had already prepared a list of the members of his cabinet, all of whom were his friends and neighbours!

Literally ‘Everyone’ in Iran Can Run for President! The other presidential candidate was the professor of public policy and international development at Rutgers University, Houshang Amirahmadi. He had once told an Iranian news agency that if elected, he would focus on creating a thriving national economy and more jobs for Iran’s young population. He had also registered to compete in the previous edition of Iran’s presidential election.

A man around 55, holding a bright pink handbag and being suited up, also showed up for registration! No doubt, he deserves to be included in the list of extraordinary applicants.

Literally ‘Everyone’ in Iran Can Run for President!Nasser Forqani Allah-Abadi also ran for the post. He has five wives and 18 children! He promised to legalize opium consumption and trade and to dissolve Law Enforcement Force of the Islamic Republic of Iran after coming into power as Iran’s president. He also urged Iranian ethnic groups and tribes to settle their disputes themselves. No doubt, he has already secured a large number of the addicts’ vote.

Literally ‘Everyone’ in Iran Can Run for President!Born in 1929, he is one of the oldest individuals to have signed up for Iran’s May election. We all hope that, in case of emerging victorious in the race, he manages to finish his term in office.

He is only 12 and, most probably, born in 2005. By registering for the election he appears to have booked a berth for 2025 election, when he reaches the age of majority. However, it does not seem that he has managed to sign up, as he lacks the minimum age condition.

What Do State Officials Say?

The lack of restricting criteria and regulations for registration to compete in the country’s most important and determining election, has not remained unnoticed by Iranian political statesmen and officials, with many sharply criticizing the shortcoming, calling for greater attention to the issue.

Commenting on the issue, Hossein-Ali Amiri, a member of the Central Executive Board of Iran’s upcoming presidential election, said, “Laws and regulations in this regard need to undergo a substantial revision. It is an inevitable move. The continuation of the current trend in registration for presidential election is quite costly and time-consuming.”

Referring to the same issue in an Instagram post, Secretary of Iran’s Expediency Council Mohsen Rezaei wrote: “It is scorning both the Iranian people and the country’s democracy that on the first day of the registration process, there comes an applicant claiming to be god, on the second day, another one calls himself a prophet, someone brings his child to sign up for the competition and foreign and domestic media publish photos and reports of these psychopaths as applicants for contesting in Iran’s presidential elections. The freedom in signing up for the election should not turn into a tool for broadcasting negative propaganda against Iranian people. The officials of the Ministry of Interior, the Guardian Council and media are required to prevent such [negative] advertisements to be displayed.”

Blasting the lack of sufficient criteria and preconditions that prevent incompetent individuals from signing up to run for the race, Iran’s Guardian Council Spokesman Abbas-Ali Kadkhodaei said, “Given the terms and conditions stipulated in the Principle 115 of the Constitution, many of those who have signed up will not qualify for competing in the election.”

He added no one should mistake the presidential election and its registration process for a festival.

“As stipulated in the Constitution, the presidency post, as the country’s second highest position, requires someone who has a broad managerial background.”

Kadkhodaei noted that the Guardian Council will begin reviewing the applicants’ qualification as of Sunday (April 16).

Women’s CandidacyWomen’s Candidacy

The number of the women applying to compete in Iran’s 12th presidential election has witnessed an increase compared to that of the previous edition.

This is while, all of the women applicants have been disqualified in the previous elections.

Commenting on women’s prohibition from racing in the previous editions of Iran’s presidential election, Shahindokht Molaverdi, Iran’s vice-president for women and family affairs, said all those women who were declared ineligible in the previous editions, did not meet the criteria to be appointed president.

“Their disqualification, however, had nothing to do with their gender.”

Commenting on the same issue after running for president, Azam Taleqani, the daughter of the late Iranian theologian, Muslim reformer, democracy advocate and senior Shiite cleric Ayatollah Mahmoud Taleqani, said, “I am here to determine what does ‘man of politics’ – a term used to call statesmen and politicians in Iran – mean.”

Being the first-ever Iranian woman candidate hopeful after the Islamic Revolution, she said the term ‘political statesman’ does not denote that solely men are allowed to be appointed to key and administrative positions in the country, adding the word should also include women.

She has earlier registered to compete in Iran’s presidential election twice, in 1997 and 2009.

Iran Leader Calls for Rapid Delivery of Aid to Flood-Hit People

“The urgent task of the relevant authorities is to assist affected people and reduce their pain,” Ayatollah Khamenei said in a message on Saturday, adding that the measures should be taken without delay.

The Leader also voice sympathy with bereaved families of victims.
Earlier in the day, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani had also issued an order for immediate emergency efforts to help victims of the flashfloods that have paralyzed parts of the country’s northwestern regions.

Rouhani-HassanIn telephone conversations with the governors of the provinces of West Azarbaijan, East Azarbaijan, Ardabil, and with Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian who has traveled to the areas affected by flooding, President Rouhani ordered all local organizations to mobilize efforts to provide aid and emergency relief for the flood-hit cities and villages.

The president also ordered the neighboring provinces to offer assistance if necessary, Tasnim reported.

Head of Iran’s Crisis Management Organization has confirmed the deaths of over 40 people in severe flooding triggered by torrential rains in four northwestern provinces of the country.
Esmaeel Najjar said the bodies of 40 people who died in the flash floods have been found.

Heavy rains started on Friday. The surging waters caused rivers to burst their banks and swept away cars and flooded houses in the provinces of East and West Azarbaijan, Kordestan, and Ardabil.

flood in tabrizNajjar said in Azar Shahr in East Azarbaijan 17 people in 7 cars went missing on Friday after their cars were carried away by floodwaters, adding that the bodies of all 17 have been found by rescue teams.

Eighteen villagers in Chenar, near the town of Ajabshir, East Azarbaijan, were also killed and two remain missing, he said.

According to the official, 12 houses were completely destroyed in the village, too.
In Kordestan, one person lost his life in the deluge in the city of Baneh and 4 were killed in landslides in the town of Saqqez, the official stated.

floodMeanwhile, search and rescue operations continue in the areas hit by the floods, and military and law enforcement forces have been asked to assist.

Shahin Fathi, of the Iranian Red Crescent Society’s Search and Rescue Department, said that the operations had provided assistance to as many as 1150 people in 33 cities and villages.
He said 133 people had been accommodated in temporary shelters, 15 transferred to safe areas, and six taken to medical centers to receive due services.

Persepolis Claims Iran Pro League Title for Third Time

In the match held in Yadeger-e Imam Stadium, Persepolis defeated the Tabriz based team 2-0.

Ali Alipour opened the scoring for Persepolis just seconds into the match.

Persepolis could have scored more goals in the first half but its strikers wasted their chances.

In the 69th minute, Alipour was brought down in the penalty area and Mehdi Taremi scored Persepolis’s second goal.

Persepolis won the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2001-02 season.

The Reds won the title for the second time in 2007-08 in a dramatic match in Tehran’s Azadi Stadium.

Sepahan is the most decorated team in IPL with five titles.

First VP, Tehran Mayor Register to Run for Iran’s Presidency

Qalibaf arrived at the Iranian Interior Ministry’s Election Office on Saturday and registered to run in the forthcoming election in May.

Addressing reporters after his registration, Qalibaf disputed as unrealistic incumbent President Hassan Rouhani’s claims about the current administration’s economic performance.

Qalibaf has formerly served as commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps’ Air Force from 1997 to 2000 and police chief from 2000 to 2005. He was also the managing director of Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Development Headquarters. He was also a candidate in both the 2005 and 2013 presidential elections.

Earlier in April, the national assembly of the Popular Front of the Islamic Revolution Forces named their five final candidates for the upcoming presidential poll through voting.

The shortlist included Hojjatoleslam Raeisi, who garnered 2,147 votes, followed by Alireza Zakani, a former lawmaker, with 1,546 votes, Mehrdad Bazrpash, also a former lawmaker, with 1,404 votes, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, who is the current mayor of Tehran, with 1,373 votes, and Parviz Fattah, the current head of the Imam Khomeini Relief Foundation, with 994 votes.

The five were elected from a total of ten candidates, who had been chosen in the first meeting of the assembly, which was held at the same venue on February 23.

The five-day registration process for the presidential election ended on Saturday.

At the end of the fifth and final day of the registration process, the head of the Interior Ministry’s Election Office, Ali Asghar Ahmadi, said that a total number of 1,636 individuals, including 137 women, had registered to run in the upcoming election.

Iran will simultaneously hold the 12th presidential election and the 5th City and Village Councils Elections on May 19.

The Guardian Council is scheduled to start vetting presidential hopefuls for their qualifications on Sunday.

The Guardian Council spokesman, Abbas Ali Kadkhodaei, told reporters on Saturday that many of the registered hopefuls would “certainly” be disqualified.

He added that the presidential post is a “very important” position and the country’s Constitution has very clearly set out the conditions for the assumption of the office.

Other high-profile figures signing up

First Vice President Es’haq Jahangiri also registered on Saturday to run in the upcoming presidential election.

Speaking to reporters after completing the registration process, Jahangiri said unity is needed to overcome challenges, citing unemployment as among the country’s main problems.

He said Iran needs to create one million job opportunities each year.

Jahangiri was the minister of industry, mine and trade from 1997 to 2005. Before that, he was the governor of the central province of Isfahan and also a member of the Parliament for two terms.

Mohammad Hashemi Rafsanjani, the brother of the late chairman of the Expediency Council, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, also on Saturday put his name down for the presidential contest.

Iran’s Defence Ministry Unveils Latest Achievements

The achievements were displayed during an exhibition at the Iranian Helicopter Support and Renewal Company (IHSRC) in Tehran on Saturday.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani paid a visit to the exhibition. During his visit, a number of defense achievements were unveiled, among them Iran’s first domestically-made training jet, named Kowsar.

A tactical drone dubbed Mohajer-6, the Nasir anti-ship cruise missile, and the Fakur air-to-air missile were also put on display.

Additionally, the Qaher F-313 fighter jet was tested for taxiing.

Twenty helicopters heavily retrofitted were also unveiled and handed over to the Armed Forces during the ceremony.

During the event, Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan said the production of the Qaher F-313 and Kowsar jets was “a prelude to the production of heavy aircraft.”

He further announced plans to domestically manufacture heavy jet engines.

VP Highlights Improvement of Iranian Start-ups after Nuclear Deal

Speaking at the 10th International Exhibition of Exchange, Bank and Insurance, VP for Science and Technology Sorena Sattari said some Iranian start-up companies have grown %1000.

Stressing that Iran needs a new culture for the field of technology, Sattari added, “Three years ago, when we started collaborating with the Post Company, I couldn’t predict the idea market in the stock market would improve so fast.”

“We are following the idea of creating something like Nasdaq Stock Market for insurance companies,” IRNA quoted him as saying on Saturday.

Sattari went on to say, “The fact that a 25-year-old owns a million-dollar company shows that new kinds of financial systems are arising in the country.”

International exchanges of the start-ups is the result of JCOPA, he noted, adding, “In the last year, we witnessed some new players in the country’s economy; the nation’s youth will break the old structures and today we witness the fall of the traditional markets.”

A Look at Iranian Newspaper Front Pages on April 15

Nearly one month to Iran’s presidential and local elections, the registration of candidates from different political camps to run for the country’s presidency is the top story in all newspapers.

Almost all newspapers covered the candidacy of the two main rivals at this year’s presidential election, namely the incumbent president Hassan Rouhani and the conservative cleric Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi.

The rumours of an imminent war in the Korean Peninsula between the United States and North Korea also received great coverage today.
