New Party to Fulfil Needs of Iraqi Younger Generation: Ammar al-Hakim

Ammar al-Hakim announced on July 24 he is stepping down as the ISCI leader to establish a new party.

However, in an interview with the Mehr News Agency, he said the formation of the new party does not mean breaking relationship with the members of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq.

“Since 2009 and after the relative failure of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq in the political arena of the country, we came to the conclusion that the structure and approaches of the council need some sort of reform in order to restore its position according to the facts in the Iraqi society,” the Iraqi politician added.

“This approach has been discussed for a long time at the higher levels of the council, but for some reasons it was not accepted by some colleagues, and finally we decided to form a new party.”

Hakim also pointed out that the management of the new conditions in which the young generation of Iraq came into existence need to be reviewed.

“We are trying to take a fresh look at how to attract more of this generation,” he added.

“There is not going to be any negative competition between us and our friends from other groups, especially in the Supreme Council. I am the same Seyyed Ammar, but we should take into consideration that getting updated in the field of political action needs change in some approaches, especially in relation to the new generation of Iraqi society,” Hakim noted.

In response to a question on his probable trip to Saudi Arabia, the Iraqi cleric said that he is not planning a visit to Saudi Arabia at the moment.

“A Saudi mediator recently came to me with a message saying that if invited, will you meet with the Saudi heads of state? I said if their souvenir for me is that they will leave Bahrain and end massacre of the innocent Yemeni people, I will certainly accept their invitation. They turned down my request and for the time being, I am not planning a trip to Saudi Arabia.”

Qatar Detains Iranian Fishermen for 2nd Time in 2 Weeks

Fishing Boat

Mohammad Radmehr, the governor of Parsian town in Hormuzgan province, said two fishing boats departed the town on Monday for catching fish, but lost each other and unintentionally sailed out of the Iranian territorial waters.

According to a Farsi report by the Mehr News Agency, one of the fishing boats with three sailors on board, named Abdolmajid Rahmani, Mohammad Amin Bahri, and Aqil Irannejad, was seized by Qatar’s coast guards after they trespassed the Arab country’s waters, he added.

“The IRGC Navy and all relevant authorities are pursuing their release through legal measures,” Radmehr went on to say.

This is the second such incident in over two weeks. Earlier on July 19, three other Iranian fishermen were detained by Qatari coast guards in the Persian Gulf.

The detained people, from Assaluyeh port of Iran’s southern Bushehr province, were busy fishing in a boat near the oil rigs of Qatar, the Chief of Fishery Organization of Assaluyeh port, Abdolhossein Bahreini, said at the time.

The Iranian boat did not receive the required licence for fishing, and since it did not observe the marine border regulations, it was stopped and its crew were detained, Bahreini said.

Trump’s Signing of New Sanctions Attempt to Destroy JCPOA

Araghchi

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Abbas Araghchi made the announcement on Wednesday, shortly after Trump signed into law a bill by Congress that imposes new sanctions against Russia, Iran and North Korea.

Iran and the P5+1 group of countries — the US, the UK, France, Russia, and China plus Germany — inked the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in July 2015. It lifted nuclear related sanctions on Iran, which, in turn, put certain limits on its nuclear work.

The United Nations nuclear watchdog has invariably certified Iran’s commitment to its contractual obligations since January 2016, when the deal took effect. The US, however, has prevented the deal from fully yielding. Washington has refused to offer global financial institutions the guarantees that they would not be hit by American punitive measures for transactions with Iran.

“The US’ main goal for imposing the sanctions against Iran is to destroy the JCPOA and we will react very intelligently to these measures,” said Araghchi.

Noting that Trump’s move was predictable as Congress had almost unanimously voted for the new sanctions, Araghchi stressed that it showed the US believes the JCPOA has empowered Iran in the region.

“Based on this perspective, the general belief in Washington is that this situation must be reversed and Iran must be put under pressure,” he said, adding that the nuclear deal is a hindrance for such measures.

He noted that imposing fresh sanctions on Iran is an attempt to reduce Tehran’s benefits from the nuclear accord and to negatively affect its “successful implementation.”

The senior Iranian official also said that in a committee chaired by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani several decisions were made over reactions towards Washington’s provocative measures, which will be duly handed over to the Iranian Foreign Ministry and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

“On Monday, the committee for monitoring the implementation of the JCPOA had a meeting in which all aspects of the new measures were discussed and very intelligent responses were designed,” he added
