Iraq Starts Operation to Liberate Tal Afar from ISIS

Iraqi Army fight against ISIS

Six weeks after Iraq’s second-largest city Mosul was declared liberated, the Iraqi PM announced that the battle to oust ISIS from Tal Afar, 60 kilometres west of Mosul, has been officially started, according to Arab media reports.

Iraq’s official military spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Rasoul told reporters on Friday that the fight will involve the Iraqi Army, counter-terrorism services (CTS), police and Hashd al-Shaabi popular forces (PMUs).

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) says thousands of pro-government fighters are going to participate in the operation to retake Tal Afar.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Lebanon-based Arabic-language al-Mayadeen television news network on Friday, Ahmed al-Asadi said 20,000 volunteer forces, commonly known by the Arabic name Hashd al-Sha’abi, will take part in the battle for Tal Afar.

“We have information about the presence of foreigners within ISIS ranks in Tal Afar, but we do not know their identity,” Asadi pointed out.

He noted that the operation to liberate Tal Afar will not take long, but rather several weeks.

Opposition Leader’s Hunger Strike Widely Covered in Iranian Papers

Karroubi, who has been under house arrest in the past six years for his role in the unrest following the 2009 presidential election in Iran, stopped eating and drinking on Wednesday morning and was taken to hospital on Thursday due to high blood pressure.

The 79-year-old reformist cleric reportedly declared he will not resume eating until intelligence agents are removed from his home, and a public trial is scheduled for him.

After an order by President Hassan Rouhani, Health Minister Hassan Qazizadeh Hashemi and a deputy intelligence minister met the opposition leader on Thursday and secured promises that convinced him to end the hunger strike.

Surprisingly, the issue was widely covered in the front pages of both conservative and reformist newspapers on Saturday.

The reformist daily Etemad covered the issue using the headline “Rouhani’s Special Order: Health, Intelligence Ministries Urged to Deal with Opposition Leader’s Hunger Strike”.

The government-run Iran newspaper referred to the end of Karroubi’s hunger strike after Rouhani’s orders.

The Hamdeli newspaper also reported the hope expressed by various religious and political figures about the end of the opposition leaders’ house arrest.

The reformist Seda-ye Eslahat newspaper quoted Seyyed Hadi Khamenei, the younger reformist brother of Iran’s Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, as saying that the end of the house arrest would increase the reputation of Iran’s Islamic Revolution.

The Setareh Sobh newspaper quoted the First Vice-Speaker of Iran’s Parliament Massoud Pezeshkian as saying that the continuation of the opposition leaders’ house arrest will not be in Iran’s interest.

It also referred to the Parliament’s Second Vice-Speaker Ali Motahari’s remarks, where he urged the country’s officials to prepare the grounds for Karroubi’s trial.

Pezeshkian’s remarks were also covered by Bahar, which used the headline “Issue of House Arrest Can Be Resolved through Interaction between Leaders.”

Bahar also dedicated its editorial to the issue of the opposition leaders’ house arrest, saying there is a legal solution to the problem.

Meanwhile, the conservative paper Javan criticized the fuss made about the hunger strike, and described it as a small one-day strike. It also released an editorial on the issue titled ‘Ending House Arrest: One Way, Two Results’, arguing that the end of house arrest will not mean the release of the two opposition figures; it rather will lead to their trial and a possible death penalty for them.

Javan advised reformists not to drag the Establishment into the execution of the two figures, and let them stay under the house arrest.

The other major conservative paper Kayhan also published Hossein Shariatmadari’s interview with Fars about Karroubi’s hunger strike. In this interview, Shariatmadari, the chief of Kayhan, described the strike as a plot hatched to fabricate documents for anti-Iran human rights sanctions imposed by the US.

He further described Karroubi as an individual with revolutionary backgrounds, and accused reformists of taking advantage of him to protect the other opposition leader Mir-Hossein Mousavi and the former president Seyyed Mohammad Khatami during the post-election ‘sedition’ in 2009.

Iranian Firm in Talks with KIA Motors for Car Parts Export

Artash Composite, a knowledge-based company producing resistance welding electrodes as one of the items used by auto makers, is trying to offer the product on international markets.

According to a Farsi report by ISNA, the move is in line with Iran’s plan to expand the market for its nano-products in the automobile manufacturing sector.

The company has been producing resistance welding electrodes since 2011, meeting a considerable part of the needs of auto giant Iran Khodro Company (IKCO).

Resistance welding electrode is the most frequently used item in auto manufacturing and home appliances industries. More than 95% of vehicles’ body parts are produced using

resistance welding electrodes.

Artash Composite is now holding talks with South Korea’s Kia Motors to supply the car maker with resistance welding electrodes, and has already sent 150 kilograms of the product to the Obara Corporation for testing.

Hashemi Rafsanjani Elected as Head of Tehran City Council

In an unofficial session on Saturday, all members-elect of the Iranian capital’s city council voted for the presidency of Hashemi Rafsanjani, who was the only candidate for the post.

Morteza Alviri and Ahmad Masjed-Jamei, two other senior members of the Council, earlier withdrew from running for the post in favour of Hashemi Rafsanjani.

Alviri later noted that his withdrawal was a move to increase the unity of the all-reformist Council.

The new City Council, which will start its work on August 23, earlier elected Mohammad-Ali Najafi, a senior reformist and former education and science minister, as the new mayor of Tehran, replacing the conservative Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf.

The top story today was the ISIS terrorist attack on Barcelona, Spain, which claimed at least 14 lives and wounded several others. The attack was strongly condemned by Iran’s foreign ministry.

Another top story was the anniversary of the 1953 US-backed coup in Iran, which led to the overthrow of democratically-elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh.

The hunger strike of Mahdi Karroubi, one of the two Iranian opposition leaders under house arrest, and President Hassan Rouhani’s order for addressing his demands also received great coverage.

Qatar Worried about Safety of Citizens in Saudi Arabia

Speaking in a visit to Norway, the Qatari FM noted that Saudi authorities had yet to respond to queries from the Qatari Ministry of Islamic Affairs regarding the security of Qatari citizens during Hajj.

“The level of tension between the two nations, the language and the tone of the Saudi media spreading hatred against Qatari people represents a great concern for us,” he told a news conference, as reported by Reuters.

“Those people crossing the border right now are under the responsibility of the Saudi authorities for their security and safety,” he said, adding that “more than 100” citizens had crossed since the border was reopened.

US Officials’ Anti-Iran Stances to Destablise Mideast: Envoy

In a Friday statement, Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations Gholamali Khoshroo stressed that the August 15 statement by US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley on Iran “is devoid of any shred of truth.”

Haley claimed Tuesday that Iran should not be allowed “to use the nuclear deal to hold the world hostage,” adding that the nuclear agreement with the P5+1 group of countries must not become “too big to fail.”

Here is the full statement made by Khoshroo:

The 15th August press statement by the US Ambassador to the UN on Iran is devoid of any shred of truth. The rhetoric and baseless accusations against Iran contained therein represent the latest examples of a series of provocative words, outright threats and irresponsible actions from some senior officials of the US administration in demonizing Iran and undermining the JCPOA inconsistent with the US commitments under paragraph 28 of the nuclear deal.

Instead of distorting the recent remarks of President Rouhani, the US Ambassador should heed the lessons of history and counsel some of the US administration officials to avoid repeating past mistakes. President Rouhani, in his remarks on 15 August, stressed that “Iran lives up to its JCPOA commitments and would proportionately respond to any violation of the JCPOA by other participants. Those who attempt to revert to language of sanction and threat, are prisoners of their past delusions, and by fearmongering and antagonizing they would only deprive themselves from the benefits of peace.”

The US blunders and military interventions in the Middle East during the last two decades have destabilized the region and fuelled violent extremism, terrorism and tensions. The hard-line and parochial positions adopted by certain senior US officials against Iran could further exacerbate instability in the region. Iran as a stabilizing force in the region is acting responsibly in eradicating Daesh (also known as ISIS) in Syria and Iraq and remains determined to seek a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Middle East free from extremism, terrorism, extra-regional interventions and weapons of mass destruction. Iran stands ready to continue cooperation with the regional States to achieve the shared goals and to address the existing regional challenges.

Trump Quick to Insult Islam, Hesitant to Condemn Racist Terror: Iran

“Quick to insult Islam but hesitant to condemn racist terror at home,” Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in a Saturday tweet.

Trump Quick to Insult Islam, Hesitant to Condemn Racist Terror: IranThe Iranian top diplomat was apparently referring to Trump’s anti-Islam remarks immediately after the ISIS attack on Barcelona, while he had for a couple of days refused to condemn the recent racist terrorism in Charlottesville, Virginia.

“Terror in name of race or religion is plain terror and represents neither,” Zarif went on to say in his Twitter message.

New Drug Law to Save Lives of Many Iranians on Death Row

New Drug Law to Save Lives of Many Iranians on Death Row

Earlier this week, the Iranian Parliament passed a bill to lift the death penalty for those carrying less than 50 kilograms of traditional drugs (opium, etc.) or 2 kilograms of chemical or industrial drugs (morphine, etc.). The bill still needs to be ratified by the Guardian Council to be signed into law.

In a Farsi interview with ICANA, Iranian parliamentarian Jalil Rahimi Jahanabadi referred to the legislation, saying that the main focus of the legal reforms made unanimously by the Iranian lawmakers is on dealing with the social plight of drug trafficking in the country.

He went on saying that the drug problem along with international sanctions as well as growing unemployment and other social issues have put Iran in a serious social trouble.

The Iranian lawmaker noted that the fight against drug trafficking in Iran has not yet yielded a tangible result over the past four decades, adding making some reforms in the related law seemed inevitable.

“Now with the reforms made, the drug traffickers are no longer immune to the punishments set in the law,” he noted.

Rahimi Jahanabadi also said the mentioned reforms have regulated death penalties for drug traffickers in the border areas which are suffering from unemployment and poverty.

The member of Iran’s parliament added that with the recent reforms, the leading drug traffickers and ringleaders will be given death penalty but those violators who have turned to the business due to poverty and unemployment would be given a life sentence.

His remarks came a few days after Hassan Norouzi, another lawmaker, declared that 5,300 Iranians are on death row for carrying illicit drugs. The new law may save the majority of these people.

Rahimi Jahanabadi further praised the reforms as one of the lasting achievements of the tenth parliament and said the idea of the reforms has been discussed in depth by the lawmakers as well as representatives of the judiciary and other related organizations.

“With the new reforms, more than 90 percent of the drug traffickers who had been sentenced to death would have the chance to return to life,” he said.

The lawmaker said the death penalty has its own social plight pushing the families of the violators to chaos in their social life, and the new reforms would provide them with a chance to find their appropriate way in life.

Rahimi Jahanabadi also noted that Iran is the only Islamic state in the region and the Iranians must avoid any measure which may tarnish its image.

“Unfortunately, fighting drug trafficking over the past years has not been effective enough, and has tarnished the image of our country in the region,” he added.

The member of the Judicial and Legal Commission of Iran’s Parliament went on saying that recent reforms also oblige the government to create jobs in the border region with the aim of eradicating poverty there.

“Meanwhile, the government should put more efforts into establishing a lasting development in the regions,” he said, adding that legal reform is just one part of fight against drug trafficking.

He also noted that the drug problem in Iran has been growing since the Islamic Revolution mainly due to the massive unrest in Afghanistan and opium production growth in the war-torn country.
