Iranian Province Attracts $36m in Foreign Investment

Reza Hosseini, the province’s General Manager for Economy and Finance, says as part of a large development plan to attract foreign investment, the officials in East Azarbaijan have managed to attract $36m in foreign investment during the first half of the current Iranian calendar (which started in March).

“The investments have been made mainly in car manufacturing, gold exploration projects, yarn and ADF productions,” he noted, according to a Farsi report by the Kayhan newspaper.

The official went on saying that the Economy and Finance Administration of East Azarbaijan made 120 investment surveys in the province including infrastructural and knowledge-based projects and agricultural and coal fields.

“The marketing process for provincial plans has been organized by Iran’s Foreign Ministry in cooperation with joint commercial councils and chambers of commerce. Then the plans have been offered to domestic and foreign investors,” he noted.

Hosseini added the local officials are in contact with over 70 domestic investors. “On the other hand, at least nine foreign delegations from Indonesia, Turkey, Germany and Poland have submitted their requests to invest in the province,” he noted.

Hosseini also said legal procedures are underway to issue certificate for an investment of at least $54 million to establish three small power plants with a capacity of producing 49mw electricity in the province.

“Meanwhile, arrangements are made to establish a wind and solar farm with an investment of $45m.”

Iran Gives 5 European States Ultimatum over Plane Purchase Contracts

Deputy Road Minister for International Affairs, Asghar Fakhrieh Kashan, said the European states must remain committed to their deals with Iran.

Under the contract signed between Iran and Airbus, the latter is required to prepare the ground for normal and safe flights in Iran; otherwise it has to announce an alternative company to fulfill the commitments, he noted in a Farsi interview with ISNA.

He went on saying the five European states of the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain are involved in the deal signed between Iran and Airbus.

“Each of these states has a share in the Iranian market. So, any violation of the deal will inflict an economic blow on them. We first finalised our deal with Boeing to put the European states under pressure to take entering Iran’s market more seriously,” he said.

The Iranian official said at present there is a serious competition between the US and these European states to take more shares in the Iranian market. “We are taking advantage of this competition,” he noted.

On the ultimatum set for the European states, he said “about one and a half months ago, I summoned the ambassadors of the 5 European states in Tehran and officially warned them about Iran’s decision to revise the deal if they wouldn’t take their commitments seriously. “

Fakhrieh Kashan said he has urged them to put pressure on the US to issue the required certificates to sell airplanes and their parts to Iran.

“Over the past few months, some countries like South Korea, Italy, Denmark and India have expressed their readiness to sign official agreements with Iran in this field,” he said, adding the European states know it well that they will lose an opportunity if they don’t take their commitments seriously.

The deputy minister also said there are some reports saying Iranian companies are seeking to take the most advantages of the current conditions to finalise deals with non-European companies.

He also dismissed as baseless any report saying that despite his claims, the US President, Donald Trump, is not in a position to nullify the deal between Iran and Boeing.

“Any decision to nullify the deal stands in stark contradiction to Trump’s own campaign promises to create jobs for the Americans,” he said, according to a Farsi report by the Shargh daily newspaper.

He also added that Iran has encouraged Boeing to follow up its legal right with the US administration to pave the way for its own presence in Iran. “Boeing can sign new deals with Iranian airliners including Aseman and Qeshm Air to expand its presence in Iran,” he noted.

Iran, Russia Having Best Relations Ever: Envoy

Iran, Russia Having Best Relations Ever: Envoy

Iran’s ambassador to Russia Mehdi Sanai has, in an interview with Persia Digest, elaborated on the latest developments in Tehran-Moscow relations. The highlights of the interview follow.

Iran and Russia are having their best relations ever at this point in time. This comes on the back of a proper understanding of the dangerous and complex situation in West Asia, a proper assessment of Iran’s growing power and influence, and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s strategic farsightedness.

The two countries are not only going through a brilliant era of trade, industrial and military relations, but are working together in the fight against terrorism in Iraq and Syria.

With Iranian President Hassan Rouhani taking office, Tehran-Moscow cooperation entered a new phase. The presidents of both countries have met 9 times in three and a half years, and held phone conversations several times. The political will of both countries’ leaders and the common ground they have on regional and international developments have brought the two sides closer together. Iran and Russia are two powerful neighbours in a region beset by numerous challenges, and cooperation between the two sides to ensure stability and peace will bring about synergy between the two countries.

Iran and Russia have common interests and threats. The need for stability in Afghanistan and Central Asia and the Caucasus makes Tehran and Moscow forge closer cooperation. Iran and Russia have set “fighting terrorism” as their common goal. Now, Syria has turned into a symbol of Tehran-Russia cooperation in the fight against terrorism. Iran and Russia have common interests or face common threats in different domains.

Another point is that Iran does not see its ties with Russia as a substitute to fill the void of relations with the West. We are not supposed to regard relations with a neighbor as a replacement for relations with other countries. Iran-Russia relations are taking shape based on the interests of both nations, and these relations will expand proportionate to the common ground between the two sides in terms of bilateral, regional and international approaches.

Iran Dismisses Israeli PM’s Claims about Buenos Aires Bombings

Iran Dismisses Israeli PM’s Claims about Buenos Aires Bombings

In a statement on Wednesday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said, “The Islamic Republic of Iran condemns the past years’ bombings in Buenos Aires, and rejects the accusations levelled against Iranian nationals in this regard.”

The Islamic Republic regards these accusations “as part of the Zionist regime’s anti-Iran plots and the mafia of power in Argentina who try to help the real perpetrators of the move escape punishment,” he added.

The Iranian spokesman also denounced the Israeli premier’s baseless and worthless claims about the Buenos Aires bombings and linking the Islamic Republic of Iran to the attacks.

He further called on the world to pay attention to the growing crimes of the Zionist regime of Israel, which violates human rights in the occupied territories of Palestine.

“We urge international bodies to take a decisive action to stop the slaughter of innocent people in the occupied Palestine, the violation of national sovereignty of Lebanon and Syria, the repeated aggressions on Islamic and Arab countries, and the state support for terrorism by this child-killing regime (Israel),” Qassemi added.

Iran Rejects Final Statement of Arab League Summit

Bahram Qassemi

In a statement on Wednesday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi rejected the Arab League summit’s final statement and the claims made by Kuwait and the UAE on the Iranian islands of Abu Musa, the Greater and Lesser Tunbs, saying such positions are rooted in political motives and lack of understanding of the historical realities.

Qassemi also dismissed the baseless allegations made by Kuwaiti representative on Iran and stated, “Given the tense atmosphere of the Arab League’s meeting yesterday, it seems that by repeating such unfounded charges they want to distract public opinion from the existing facts.”

“The statement issued (in this meeting) is a clear indication of interference in the internal affairs of other countries. Stressing the legal and legitimate measures in our territory, we strongly condemn such claims on the Iranian islands and vehemently reject them,” Qassemi added.

“Such imbalanced stances widen the gaps between regional countries, delaying the targeted regional collaborations, and will not have any other impact.”

“The principled policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran towards the Persian Gulf littoral states is to observe good neighbourliness, mutual respect and non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries, and paying attention to the historical and legal realities and current sensitive conditions of the region,” he added.

IAEA Inspection No Excuse for Accessing Iran’s Classified Data: Zarif

Based on the Additional Protocol, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and the framework of cooperation between Iran and the IAEA, the UN nuclear watchdog can only inspect Iranian sites built for nuclear activities, Zarif told reporters upon his arrival in Russia’s Sochi on Wednesday.

He made the comments when asked about IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano’s recent comments that his agency does not distinguish between civilian or military sites in its inspections and would ask Iran for access when necessary.

None of the IAEA inspections could be used as an excuse for access to Iran’s classified information, the top diplomat underscored.

He also noted that the UN nuclear agency has already verified there has been no undeclared nuclear activities in Iran.

As regards the purposes of his trip to Russia, Zarif pointed to coordination between Tehran and Moscow on regional developments, particularly Syria.

The cooperation among Iran, Russia and Turkey resulted in the improvement of the situation in Syria and prevented tensions to a great extent, Zarif went on to say.

He also stressed the need for closer coordination between Iran and Russia given the recent US stances toward the JCPOA, the nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

Iran to Send Doctors, Build Makeshift Hospital for Myanmar Muslims

Senior Iranian official Ebrabihm Rahimpour says a number of Iranian lawmakers have held a meeting, despite the parliament’s summer recess, to discuss the situation of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar and the measures that Iran is taking to reach out to the persecuted minority.

He said Tehran has prepared aid shipmentsfor the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.

“The first [aid] consignment will be shipped to the Arkan region on Friday. Talks have been held with the governments of Myanmar and Bangladesh in that regard, and we are waiting for flight permits,” said Rahimpour, the deputy Iranian foreign minister for Asia-Pacific affairs, after an extraordinary session attended by members of the parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission and Foreign Ministry officials.

“Moreover, some individuals will be dispatched to the area to assess the situation and see how to carry out relief operations better,” he added.

“A few doctors will also go there to take care of the [Rohingya] Muslims’ needs; we have also decided to build a makeshift hospital there,” he further said.

“We will see what the best routes are to send in goods. The Foreign Ministry will also study the matter from a legal and political perspective, and follow up the issue through the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.”

“By helping a Sunni religious minority in Myanmar, Iran is showing that it regards all Muslims around the world on an equal footing, and the Myanmar government should realize that it is treading the wrong path,” Rahimpour underlined.

He said around 100 tonnes of commodities are ready to be shipped, and added they will be sent in two 50-tonne batches if the whole consignment cannot be dispatched at one go.

“These supplies will be sent to the refugees on Myanmar-Bangladesh borders.”

He said the relief aid will be sent to Muslims inside Myanmar as well.

Iran Leader Calls for Expediency Council’s Revolutionary Attitude

Newly appointed chairman and members of Iran’s Expediency Council met with Ayatollah Khamenei, on Wednesday morning.

During the meeting, Ayatollah Khamenei said the Expediency Council is a legacy of the Islamic Revolution, founded based on Imam Khomeini’s ideas.

“The Expediency Council is a product of the Islamic Revolution and reminds us of Imam Khomeini. It plays an influential role in governing and managing the country,” the Leader added.

Ayatollah Khamenei demanded that the ideals and values of the Islamic Revolution of 1979 be applied to the council, further adding, “Imam Khomeini’s thoughts and the ideals of the Islamic Revolution must fully rule over the Expediency Discernment Council.”

“The Council should think and act [based on] revolutionary [ideals],” the Leader went on to say.

Ayatollah Khamenei described the three most important duties of the Expediency Council as, “discerning the expediency of the system, advisement on charting general policies for the country and offering solutions to problems the country deals with.”
