Iran FM in Tajikistan for High-Level Talks

During the meeting, Zarif and Aslov discussed issues of mutual interest.

The Iranian top diplomat’s visit to Tajikistan is the first of its kind in the past couple of years. Relations between the two countries took a nosedive in late December 2015 on the issue of the Islamic Movement of Tajikistan. While the Islamic Renaissance Party of Tajikistan (IRPT) was considered by the Tajik government as a banned party, its leader Muhiddin Kabiri, who lives in exile, was invited to an international conference in Tehran, and this outraged the Central Asian state.

Iran FM in Tajikistan for High-Level TalksTajik authorities said despite the fact that Mohiddin Kabiri was accused of organizing riots in September 2015, Iran invited him to the International Conference of Islamic Unity while he was seated next to the head of Tajikistan’s state-backed Council of Islamic Ulema and other members of the official delegation from Tajikistan.

Meanwhile, informed sources say the tension between the two countries goes back to earlier times and is in connection with the assets of Babak Zanjani, the Iranian billionaire who is in jail and was earlier sentenced to death.

There has been no serious bilateral diplomatic engagements within the past two years, but Zarif’s visit to Dushanbe is believed to be a serious step to mend Iran-Tajikistan ties.

Zarif will later leave the Tajik capital for Uzbekistan, where he will hold talks with the country’s officials and attend the International Conference on Security and Sustainable Development in Central Asia.

In comments at the beginning of a religious course in Tehran on Monday, Ayatollah Khamenei hailed the pilgrimage to Karbala for commemoration of Arbaeen, the 40th day after the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), as the envy of all people.

“Thank God, millions of our people, Iraqis and others take this path,” Imam Khamenei said, describing the huge movement as a “magnificent symbol” of love for the Shiite imams.

The Arbaeen pilgrimage is among “very outstanding” events bestowed by God, the Leader added.

Each year, a huge crowd of Shiite Muslims attend the religious commemoration of Arbaeen.

Last year, around 20 million pilgrims from all over the world gathered in Karbala on Arbaeen.

Iran to Fully Support, Stand by Lebanon: President Rouhani

In a phone conversation with Lebanese President Michel Aoun on Tuesday, Rouhani said Tehran and Beirut had a “very friendly and growing” relationship.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has always called for the safeguarding of peace and stability in regional countries, including Lebanon,” he added.

The Lebanese people have always managed to settle their major problems through national unity, the Iranian president noted.

He expressed confidence that the Lebanese people would thwart the “new plot” against the country through their wisdom, in reference to the sudden resignation of Prime Minister Saad Hariri.

Rouhani emphasized that the Lebanese people would not allow others to turn their country into a battlefield for “the clash of foreign powers” and provide terrorists with a chance to return.

Hariri announced his resignation in a televised statement from Riyadh on Saturday, citing many reasons, including the security situation in Lebanon, for his sudden decision. He also said that he sensed a plot being hatched against his life.

Hariri accused Iran and Lebanon’s Hezbollah resistance movement of meddling in Arab countries’ affairs, an allegation the two have repeatedly denied.

The surprise announcement has sparked a new political crisis at home in Lebanon, fueling speculations that the premier had been forced by the Riyadh regime into stepping down.

The Lebanese president on October 31 stressed Iran’s significant role in the Middle East, saying the Islamic Republic was a regional power and part of the solution to the region’s woes.

The Saudi prince was killed on Sunday when the helicopter with several officials on board crashed near the kingdom’s southern border with war-torn Yemen.

Moqren, a known opponent of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was fleeing the country with a number of other princes when the chopper crashed, a report by the Middle East Eye says.

Meanwhile, the Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot has claimed that the chopper has been targeted by a Saudi fighter jet.

News of the crash comes as Riyadh pursues a sweeping purge of the kingdom’s upper ranks, with dozens of princes, ministers and a billionaire tycoon arrested as bin Salman tries to boost his grip on power.

When the purge was launched on Saturday, there was a ban on the movement of all private planes.

In a Tuesday phone conversation, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson talked about the case of  Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, an Iranian-British woman jailed in Iran.

Zarif stressed during the phone conversation that “dual nationality” is not accepted under the Iranian law, said Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi.

Zarif’s remarks come as Zaghari-Ratcliffe is referred to by Western media as a “British-Iranian national.”

Zarif also highlighted that the three branches of government in Iran work independently.

“Making decisions on this case falls within the remit of the Iranian Judiciary, and I, as a humanitarian gesture, will inform Iranian judicial authorities of your comments,” said the top Iranian diplomat.

The phone call came after Johnson retracted his comments Tuesday about Zaghari-Ratcliffe amid growing criticism from her husband and fellow lawmakers.

Johnson had told a British Parliament committee last week that she was simply teaching journalism in Iran.

His critics say Johnson’s remarks led to Zaghari-Ratcliffe being summoned to an unscheduled court hearing in Iran over the weekend, at which Johnson’s remarks, as the critics say, were cited as proof that she had engaged in “propaganda” against the Islamic Republic.

Zaghari-Ratcliffe is serving a five-year prison term in Iran after being convicted of spying.

Speaking at a meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus on Tuesday, Velayati offered his congratulations over the recent victories of the Syrian forces against foreign-backed terrorists east of the Arab country.

“The Syrian people have resisted (against terrorists) for about seven years and the resistance has been fruitful in terms of restoring security and political stability to Syria,” he said.

He further emphasized that the fates of Resistance Front countries are now tied together, adding that today, the enemies of the front are in their weakest possible position compared to the past.

Assad, for his part, underlined the importance of closer relations between Tehran and Damascus and expressed his gratitude to the Islamic Republic for its support for the Arab country.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.

According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.

In the meantime, Iran has remained a close ally of Syria and supports its legitimate government in the face of foreign-backed militancy.

Tehran insists that the Syrian nation is the only side that has the right to shape the future of its own country, rejecting foreign intervention with the use of force.

Commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Major General Mohammad-Ali Jafari has underlined the importance of popular forces in confronting the enemy, reports Fars News Agency.

“We were informed that the United States and the Zionist regime [of Israel] are making efforts to create insecurity in Pakistan like in other regional countries. Preventive measures and reliance on popular forces along with the Armed Forces and security troops can prevent the creation of insecurity in that country,” said the top commander in a meeting with Pakistani Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa.

“With 40 years of experience in confronting enemy threats, Iran stands ready to share with Pakistan its experience in the field of defence and popular resistance.

General Jafari also highlighted the role of popular forces in fighting terrorists in the region.

“When it was decided to use popular forces in the battlefield in Iraq and Syria like in the Holy Defence era (a term used to refer to the eight years of war launched by the former Iraqi regime against Iran in the 1980s), the organized presence of, and wholehearted defence by the people [fighting] along with the army turned the tables and brought about the defeat of Takfiris today,” the Iranian general said.

He also underscored that Iran and Pakistan will further deepen their relations in the future.

The top Pakistani general, in turn, praised the IRGC, saying, “The IRGC’s moves in aiding the Muslims nations in the region  has made me more interested in you.”

He then expressed his gratitude to the IRGC for expressing its preparedness to share its experience with Pakistan in the field of defence and mobilization of popular forces.

He said the enemies are seeking to drive a wedge between Tehran and Islamabad, and underlined that Pakistan is set to enhance its relations and cooperation with Iran despite all conspiracies and divisive measures by the enemy.

Despite all threats, the Pakistani general said, Iran enjoys a good status today.

He said Pakistan, too, has been under sanctions for years, but “the two nations have done well so far despite all problems.”

Arba’een, which marks the anniversary of fortieth day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions, is the time when millions of Shiite pilgrims gather in the city of Najaf and start their trek towards the city of Karbala on foot.

This year, before embarking on their walk, many pilgrims visited the house where Imam Khomeini used to live when he was in exile before the 1979 Revolution.

Saudi Arabia’s Anti-Iran Claims in Violation of UN Charter: Zarif

Speaking in a Tuesday phone conversation with Britain’s Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, Zarif lashed out at Saudi Arabia for its provocative moves in the region.

He also rejected the false and dangerous claims raised by Saudi officials, and stressed that such allegations are against international laws and the UN charter.

Zarif and Johnson also conferred on bilateral ties between Tehran and London as well as regional and international issues.

The Iranian top diplomat’s comments came after Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman accused Iran of “direct military aggression” which could be an “act of war.”

Saudi air defence forces intercepted a ballistic missile on Saturday fired toward the capital, Riyadh, from across the border in Yemen. The Kingdom’s officials are accusing Iran of supplying the missiles to Yemen’s Houthi fighters, while Iran denies such allegations.
