Iran Determined to Fight Cell Phone Smuggling: Minister

According to the minister, regulating the cell phone market in Iran has its own costs, adding the smugglers began to stigmatize anyone who enters the fray to make the market regulated.

In a video posted on his Instagram account, he said, “They can proceed with their stigmatization, but we won’t allow them to continue their smuggling.”

According to a Farsi repot by IRNA, Azari Jahromi also stressed smuggling of cell phone can erode the public’s trust in the government.

“We are determined to implement the plan of registering the cell phones imported into the country because most of these phones are smuggled.”

He went on to say smuggling of cell phones will also deprive Iranian users of appropriate after-sales services.

“The smuggling of cell phone has led to the violation of ownership rights as well.  Meanwhile, with such a huge amount of smuggled cell phones in the country, we cannot put pressure on the cell phone produces with over 40 percent of Iranian market’s share to offer the required software needed by the Iranian users because when they see their products are distrusted easily, they see no reason to accept our demands,” he noted.

Azari Jahromi also added smuggling of cell phones has caused his ministry to lose its full control over the market.

Earlier this year, a business official told Financial Tribune that each year 12.5 million cell phones are brought into Iran illegally, depriving government coffers $350 million in tax revenues.

Chairman of Iran’s Imports Federation, affiliated to Iran Chamber of Commerce, Hossein Qaravi said, “Our assessments show mobile phones smuggled into the country in a year are worth almost $2.5 billion.”

“Demand in the market is for nearly 14 million cellphones per year. According to official data, less than 10% of this number enters legally,” Qaravi said.

Iran’s total annual imports are in the region of $50 billion. It is highly disconcerting to see that smuggled cell phones account for a massive 5% of the nation’s total imports about which officials have talked too often but done nothing to stop or punish the smugglers

France Urges Saudi Arabia to Stop Funding Terrorist Groups

Macron and Bin Salamn

Saudi Arabia finances groups overseen by the Mecca-based Muslim World League, which for decades was charged with spreading the strict Wahhabi school of Islam around the world.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman recently claimed he is going to cleave to a more open and tolerant interpretation of Islam.

“He never did it publicly, but when I went to Riyadh (this month), he made a commitment, such that we could give him a list and he would cut the financing,” Macron said during an interview with France 24 television.

“I believe him, but I will follow up. Trust is built on results,” Macron added.

The head of the Muslim World League told Reuters last week that Bin Salman’s focus was aimed at annihilating extremist ideology.

“We must wipe out this extremist thinking through the work we do. We need to annihilate religious severity and extremism which is the entry point to terrorism,” Mohammed al-Issa said in an interview.

Water Resources Discovered under Earth’s Hottest Spot

Aghakouchak, an associate professor at the University of California, is one of the most renowned researchers and experts in hydrologic sciences and has managed key research projects in the field of hydrology, including drought.

Water Resources Discovered under Earth’s Hottest SpotThe results of his surveys have been published in well-known magazines.

In an interview with the Persian-language Khabar Online news agency, the researcher weighed in on a whole range of issues related to his expertise, including reports that he has discovered subterranean water resource in Iran’s Lut Desert.

Aghakouchak said he along with a research team had toured the desert several times to conduct research work.

He says they learned that underground water resources existed in some areas in Lut, but that, “We don’t know the volume and size of these desert water resources.”

He says the Lut Desert is one of the “exceptional” places in the world and has “special features.”

“From a hydrologic point of view, [the desert] has been identified as the hottest place on earth,” he says.

Highlighting that water consumption is on the rise in today’s world, the researchers said measures should be adopted to meet people’s need for water such as investing in new technologies and improving the consumption pattern.

Aghakouchak recently won the prestigious 2017 Hydrologic Sciences Early Career Award of the American Geophysical Union. He is the first Iranian who has won the prestigious award.

Without Iran’s Support, Baghdad Would Have Collapsed: Iraqi General

“Iranians stood by us as military advisors within a mechanism agreed with Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi. Today we have a comprehensive security establishment equipped with the required factors to achieve victories,” Al-Amiri said.

In an interview with Alforat TV Channel on Wednesday, Al-Amiri touched on the US Congress’ decision to put the names of some members of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units in its list of terrorists and said “we don’t care about the issue because what we are doing is just to defend the dignity of our country.”

He went on to say the Congress’ decision was made with the aim of protecting Israel’s interests in the region.

“The US Congressmen have closed their eyes to what is going on in Iraq. We call on the US military forces as well as its military advisors to leave our country as soon as possible,” he said, as quoted in a Farsi report by Tasnim.

He stressed fight against ISIS had been focused mainly on eradicating the Takfiri group. “We entered the war following a Fatwa (religious decree) by Iraq’s top Shiite cleric Seyyed Ali Sistani. If it had not been for the Fatwa and the following rise of the Iraqi nation, the Iraqi forces would not have the fighting spirit to counter the ISIS threats. The victory was achieved thanks to the Fatwa and the Iraqi public’s uprising.”

The Iraqi politician called the victory of PMU a victory for all Iraq, saying the popular forces will remain united based on the top cleric’s Fatwa.

The secretary general of Badr Organization also said the PMUs are not allowed to fight against the enemies outside Iraq. “Our presence in such wars depends on the agreement of the chief-commander of armed forces.”

He also referred to the fall of the ISIS in Iraq and said the end of military operations against the terrorists does not mean that the group no longer exists because there are still some inactive terror cells in Iraq that should be eliminated.

“Our mission after military action is to engage in intelligence activities to find the elements of ISIS and eliminate them wherever they are,” he added.

Al-Amiri stressed the Iraqi intelligence forces including PMUs are not legally allowed to take part in the elections. “The PMUs commanders can enter elections but only after resigning from their military posts otherwise they can only vote.”

Elsewhere in the interview, the Iraqi politician referred to the latest verdict of the Iraqi Federal Court to declare illegal the results of the recent secession referendum in the Kurdistan Region and said the ruling of the court is a good opportunity for beginning of talks between the central government in Baghdad and the Kurdistan Regional government but the KRG views the verdict negatively.

Al-Amiri also said the central government in Baghdad has not yet taken control of the border areas. “This has already hampered talks between Baghdad and the KRG because some of the main border crossings are still under the control of KRG and Baghdad is angry with it.”

“The federal government insists on nullifying KRG referendum results and expanding security in all border crossings. Meanwhile, Baghdad has not yet managed to take full control of Erbil and Sulaymaniyah airports. KRG rejects the presence of federal forces in the border crossings. We have prudently succeeded to expand security in Kirkuk without any bloodshed. Now we hope to restore security in the border crossings soon,” he concluded.

Iran Deeply Concerned over Sheikh Qassim’s Health

Iran Deeply Concerned over Sheikh Qassim’s Health

In a Wednesday statement, Qassemi referred to the latest reports on the deteriorating health condition of Sheikh Isa Qassim and held Manama regime responsible for the consequences of any delay in the top cleric’s treatment.

“By imposing severe limitations on Sheikh Qassim and keeping him under a long-time house arrest, the Bahraini regime has restricted the cleric’s access to medical services and trusted doctors,” he added.

Qassemi once again stressed that the Bahraini officials’ insistence on tightened security measures will make the situation in the kingdom more complicated.

He then called on the international organizations to step into the fray, remove the limitations imposed on the top cleric, and provide him with immediate and reliable medical services.

Security measures in Bahrain have been tightened against the top Shiite cleric, whose house is surrounded by security forces, according to media reports. An ambulance has been witnessed near the house, but the cleric is still home and the ambulance has left the area.

Sheikh Isa Qassim, the outlawed Wefaq’s spiritual leader, was stripped of his citizenship in June last year over accusations that he had used his position to serve foreign interests and promote sectarianism and violence. The cleric was handed a suspended one-year prison term and ordered to pay a fine.

The ruling against the prominent Shiite cleric sparked widespread protests and condemnations. Bahrain has been gripped by anti-regime protests on an almost daily basis ever since a popular uprising began in the country in February 2011.

Yemeni Ex-President Urges Egypt to Leave Saudi-led Coalition

ali abdullah saleh

“The equations in the region have changed,” Saleh said in remarks made on the anniversary of the country’s Independence Day.

“I want Cairo to leave this coalition,” he said, urging Arab member states of the Saudi-led coalition, particularly Egypt, to immediately withdraw from the coalition.

He further noted that there is no conflict between Yemenis and the Arab states of the Persian Gulf. “We will hold talks with our brothers in Saudi Arabia about the Yemen war and will end the conflict.”

However, he added, the problem is the Yemeni officials who escape from Sana’a to Aden and from Aden to Saudi Arabia.

“They will finally escape Saudi Arabia because it is impossible that they would return to their homeland,” he added, apparently alluding to fugitive ex-president of Yemen Mansour Hadi.

Iran Has No Military Presence in Yemen

He also dismissed media reports about Iran’s military presence in Yemen and its role in development of Yemeni missiles.

“A missile fired from Sana’a hit Riyadh and the enemy claimed that the missile was Iranian while Iran is not present in Yemen,” Saleh was quoted as saying by the Arabic website of Sputnik on Wednesday.

“I swear to God that I, myself, demanded Iran to enter a strategic coalition with us as we are entitled to form a coalition with them to protect ourselves and our dignity but I swear to God that Iran didn’t accept it and the media reports about it are completely baseless,” he added.

He once more called on Iran to join a coalition with Yemen to confront the Saudi-led coalition which has waged the devastating and bloody war against Yemen.

While Saudi Arabia and its allies claim that Iran is arming the Houthi Ansarullah movement in Yemen, UN observers say Riyadh lacks enough evidence to prove its claim.

UN observers have, in a confidential report parts of which have leaked out, stressed that the Saudi-led coalition which is launching attacks on Yemen and has imposed a blockade on the country is threatening peace, security and stability in Yemen.

Independent observers of the UN say the Saudi-led coalition has called for gathering documents regarding Riyadh’s claim that Iran has played a role in arming Yemeni Houthi fighters and warned that failure to do so will be tantamount to a violation of the UN Security Council resolution issued in February 2017.

The coalition announced on November 6 that it would block all land, sea and air crossing points in order to keep Iran from sending weapons to Yemen. A few days ago, however, it was forced to open Sana’a airport under strong international pressure.

Iran Condemns US for Killing Iranian-American Citizen

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed Bijan Ghaisar who had sustained injuries in the head after the US forces fired three bullets at him in Virginia about two weeks ago succumbed to death Monday night (November 27).

In a letter to the UN secretary general and Human Rights High commissioner, Iran’s High Council of Human Rights said the US government must provide a convincing response over Ghaisar’s death to the world’s public opinion, a Farsi report by Mehr News Agency said.

The Iranian rights body also urged the UN to take seriously such stark human rights violations. “Based on the international rights principles as well as globally accepted documents particularly the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, each person enjoys a natural right to live which must be protected by law.”

The council also called on the Swiss embassy in Tehran to announce Iran’s strong protest over the heinous killing of the Iranian national by the US forces to Washington.

Iran Foreign Ministry Seriously Pursuing the Issue

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman on Wednesday expressed deep regret over the heinous murder by the US police, saying the Islamic Republic is seriously pursuing the issue.

In a statement, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi strongly condemned the US police brutality, and expressed sympathy with the family of the young man.

“The Iranian foreign ministry is seriously investigating into the issue to protect the rights of Iranian citizens through the official channels available as soon as possible,” he added.

The family of Bijan Ghaisar, 25, said the accountant was unarmed.Bijan Ghaisar

Bijan Ghaisar was a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University and his family describes him as a “kind and gentle soul”. The family added in a statement “the reason for the murder of our son has yet to be determined, though no reasoning could possibly justify the actions of the one or more Park Police officers involved in this unthinkable act.”

Ghaisar was shot after police said that he was involved in a hit-and-run crash and then led police on a short chase into Fairfax County on the George Washington Memorial Parkway on Nov. 17.

“Entire US within Range of New North Korean Missile”

State television said Pyongyang had achieved its mission of becoming a nuclear state.

The Hwasong-15 missile, described as its “most powerful”, was launched in darkness early on Wednesday.

It landed in Japanese waters but flew higher than any other missile the North had previously tested.

The test, which defied international sanctions imposed over the North’s weapons programme, drew swift international condemnation, with the UN Security Council due to convene an emergency session.

South Korea responded by carrying out live-fire exercises, launching one of its own ballistic missiles.
