Twin Car Blasts outside Benghazi Mosque Kill 33 (+Video)

The first explosion struck outside a mosque in the eastern city of Benghazi, in the central Al Salmani district, at around 8.20pm as worshippers were leaving evening prayers.

Around 10 to 15 minutes later, after security and health officials had arrived on the scene, a second more powerful blast was detonated from a Mercedes parked on the opposite side of the street.

The second blast also hit an ambulance and caused a higher number of casualties than the first, The Independent reported.

The victims include both military personnel and civilians, with health officials saying the death toll could rise because some of the wounded are in critical conditions.

Iran Calls for Formation of Anti-Terror Coalition with Iraq, Pakistan

Speaking to the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) on Monday night, Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi highlighted the US threats against the region and said Washington created the Daesh (ISIS or ISIL) terrorist group.

He added that Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and even Qatar provided financial and arms support for the terror group and Turkey and Jordan provided training for terrorists.

However, the commander said, the Daesh collapsed and the US faced failure in its plots to undermine the anti-Israeli Axis of Resistance.

He further emphasized that the US is seeking to fan the flames of conflicts in the West Asia region to serve its political, economic and military interests.

Major General Rahim Safavi said Iran plans to stand against the US-led coalition and terrorist groups in the region through forming a coalition with Pakistan and Iraq.

The self-proclaimed caliphate of Daesh collapsed in Syria and Iraq after Syrian forces and their allies managed to recapture Al-Bukamal, the terror group’s last stronghold.

In recent years, the Middle East region has been plagued with Takfiri terrorist groups like Daesh, which are believed to have been created and supported by the West and some regional Arab countries.

The terrorist groups, which claim to be Islamic but whose actions are anything but, have been committing heinous crimes not only against non-Muslims but mostly against Muslims in the region.

Iraq and Syria are among the countries gripped by terrorism.

Iran, a close ally of the two countries, has supported their legitimate governments in their campaign against foreign-backed militancy and terrorism.

Don’t Let Rude French FM Enter Iran: Conservative Daily

In an editorial piece on Tuesday, the conservative daily newspaper Kayhan wrote:

If Iranian officials feel the reason Iran has adopted a passive stance vis-à-vis Paris’ impudence and is offering unique and unilateral concessions to France is that Tehran is beholden to French authorities, well, they (Iranian officials) should either make it clear why the Islamic Republic is indebted to France, or stop rolling out the red carpet for Jean-Yves Le Drian, the rude French foreign minister, and not allow him to enter Iran.

In brazen comments, the French minister told Le Figaro that France has held talks with Iran on the issue of ballistic missiles as well as regional issues, but that Paris also would like to hold talks on Iran’s “destructive” military influence in the region as well as its financial support for Hezbollah and Yemeni Houthis, and “that’s why I’m going to Iran on March 5.”

He has also claimed that the Iran nuclear deal prevents Tehran from developing atomic weapons, something that, in his words, could have had catastrophic consequences for regional balance. The top French diplomat said giving assurances means there should be a framework for Iran’s ballistic missiles, and, as he said, this is the same thing required by UN Security Council Resolution 2231. He noted if Iran wants to return to the international community, it should cooperate on the issues just mentioned. Otherwise, the foreign minister claimed, Iran will, logically enough, always be suspected of developing nuclear weapons.

Earlier, too, he had talked about his upcoming trip to Iran with the same rude and insulting tone. He said in a meeting with his US counterpart Rex Tillerson that if Iran’s missiles prove to be dangerous, separate sanctions must be imposed on the country.

He claimed there are three issues as far as Iran is concerned: talks on nuclear issues, Tehran’s ballistic missiles and Iran’s desire for domination over the whole region!

The Iranian Foreign Ministry was expected to show a firm reaction to Le Drian’s rude remarks and France’s interference in Tehran’s policies, which is an example of seeking concessions in return for political and trade ties. However, the ministry, which had recently issued an inflammatory and strongly-worded statement against Iranians who are critical of the Iran nuclear deal, settled for denying the French foreign minister’s allegations and accusations against Tehran. The ministry also stressed that Iran has not had, and will not have negotiations with any country on its defense and missile programs.

By reviewing Paris’ positions against Iran, we can understand that France, Britain and Germany have entered into a full-scale deal with the US over the Iran nuclear deal.

“Public Discontent, Distrust among Root Causes of Iran Protests”

The report, which was prepared and sent to Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani based on his order, has quoted the following reasons as the root causes of the recent protests in Iran:

  • Public dissatisfaction and a decrease in people’s trust caused by the incompetence and failure of state bodies to improve the current situation of society
  • Wrong management of public opinion, increased demands and expectations, both in election campaigns and political rivalries, without taking into account the country’s resources, and an ensuing accumulation of unrealized expectations and public dissatisfaction
  • Continued activities of Iran’s foreign enemies, including the US and its regional mercenaries, as well as the counter-revolutionary groups (MKO)

ISNA in a Farsi report has quoted Deputy Interior Minister Hossein Zolfaqari as saying that the report is based on specialized data collection and valid information.

He said that the report has been compiled independently from personal perceptions and the interests of political currents.

“Basically, in describing and explaining such events, the interference of such orientations leads to miscalculations and ultimately does not have a positive outcome for the country.”

Zolfaqari added that the loyalty of the people to the Islamic Revolution and its goals and aspirations, as well as the importance of the stability and tranquility of the country besides the concerns of the people for the country’s security led to spontaneous reaction of the nation, and the enemies, who sought to create armed conflict in the country, failed in implementing their plots.

“59% of the protesters were high school students or graduates, 14% had bachelor’s degree and one percent were with higher qualifications while the education level of 16% of the protesters is not exactly known. Moreover, 84% of these protesters were under the age of 35 without any police record,” noted Zolfaqari.

Referring to the lack of adequate accountability of administrative procedures in the various departments and institutions that are responsible for current affairs of the people, and the problematic nature of unnecessary administrative bureaucracy, the deputy interior minister warned if such structural defects would not be resolved with effective measures, it cannot be expected to see the grievances decrease.

Earlier this month, Iran witnessed peaceful protests against the price hikes and the overall economic condition of the country. However, limited numbers of violent individuals, some of them armed, sought to turn the peaceful protests into street riots. Mindful of how the violent individuals sought to hijack the peaceful rallies, the original protesters soon heeded calls by authorities to leave the streets.

According to officials, some rioters used shotguns and pistols to attack police and fire at the crowds of protesters. While sporadic violence continued for several days and claimed the lives of at least 25 people.

“No Country Allowed to Interfere in Iran’s Missile Program”

Referring to the recent comments made by French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian about Iran’s missile program, Nobakht said there will be no negotiations with anyone over the country’s defence capabilities.

“Certain comments might have been made by a person at a meeting, but this is not a reason to say there has been negotiation in this regard,” he added in a Farsi interview with the YJC.

Le Drian accused Iran on Monday of not respecting part of a UN Security Council resolution that calls on Tehran to refrain from working on ballistic missiles.

“We will have the opportunity of underlining our firmness on Iran’s compliance with United Nations Resolution 2231, which limits access to ballistic capacity and which Iran does not respect,” Le Drian said upon his arrival at a European foreign ministers meeting in Brussels.

Iran has repeatedly said its missile program is purely defensive.

Le Drian on Sunday said he would travel to Iran in March and that France had begun talks with Tehran to discuss its missile program and regional activities.

However, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman on Monday dismissed the suggestion of talks on either issue.

Iran Army Test-Fires Qadir Cruise Missile in Ongoing Drills

Missile

On the second say of the massive war game, codenamed Muhammad Rasulullah-5 (Muhammad, the Messenger of God), the Army forces successfully fired a ‘Nasr’ cruise missile from an onshore mobile launcher to destroy a naval target.

The Navy is also going to use long-range cruise missiles in the drill.

In comments on Tuesday, spokesperson for the war game, Rear Admiral Lower Half Mahmoud Mousavi, hailed the Navy for perfect support for the ground and aerial forces in the drill, saying the Navy commandos exercised various offense and defense tactics on Monday.

Navy troops on board Azarakhsh and Shahab rocket-launching boats detonated the hypothetical enemy’s vessels and used Ra’ad assault vessels for minelaying operation, while the coastal artillery exercised coast defense tactics, he added.

The exercises on Monday were overseen by experienced military experts and Navy commanders to assess the weak and strong points, he noted.

The purpose of the war game is to strengthen coordination among the Ground Force, Air Force, Navy and the Air Defense, the commander added.

The war game covers vast areas south of Iran, mainly the coastline stretching to the southeastern Makran region, by the sea of Oman.

The Iranian armed forces hold routine military drills throughout the year.

Unemployment Rate Down, Economic Growth Rate Up in Iran

Unemployment Rate Down, Economic Growth Rate Up in Iran

Nobakht, who is also the head of Planning and Budget Organization of Iran, noted that the unemployment rate has dropped from 12.40 percent to 11.7 percent.

Taking oil revenues, Iran’s economic growth rate in the past ten months stands at 5.6%, but excluding the oil revenues it stands at 6 percent, he added in an address to the Iranian Parliament.

According to a Farsi report by ISNA, Nobakht said that during this period the economic indices have been positive, adding that the growth in construction sphere reached 3.2% for the first time in the last few years.

He further noted that the water, electricity and gas industry’s growth in the first six months of the past Iranian year (starting on March 21) was negative, but in the first six months of this year it reached 2.7 percent, which influenced the labour market.

“In the first six months of this Iranian year, 614,000 people entered the labour market compared to the first six months of last year, and for the first time, 795,000 people were recruited,” he concluded.

According to a report by Financial Tribune, the year 2017 has come to an end with Iran’s economy having witnessed a host of developments, most of which resulted from the removal of international nuclear-related sanctions against the country a year earlier.

The World Bank had estimated a 3.6% GDP growth at constant market prices and 3.5% at constant factor prices for the Iranian economy in 2017 while the International Monetary Fund and the United Nations put the economic growth in the past year at 3.5% and 5.3% respectively.

The latest report by the Statistical Centre of Iran shows the goods and services Consumer Price Index in the 12-month period ending Dec. 21, increased by 8% compared with last year’s corresponding period. SCI put urban and rural inflation in the same period at 7.8% and 9.2% respectively. This is while the Central Bank of Iran has put the inflation for the same month at 10%.
