Iran to Run Project to Utilize Deep Underground Water

Habibollah Dehmardeh said the project is being implemented following two years of research as well as technical and scientific studies using domestically-developed knowhow and facilities.

He said it is the first time Iran is running such a project, and added it is a historic project both in Iran and in the Middle East. “Only France and Russia had earlier implemented such a project.”

The legislator said the issue was brought to the fore in mid 2016 and discussed in a meeting attended by the vice president for science and technology.

“In order for the project to get off the ground, a cooperation agreement was signed between the Ministry of Energy and the Foundation for the Underprivileged under which they agreed to dig water wells,” said the lawmaker.

He noted that some Rls 250 billion has been set aside for the project.

Iran Ready to Help Afghanistan Advance Its Peace Process

The top Afghan official who is heading a delegation said his trip to Tehran is aimed at preparing the ground for an upcoming visit to Iran by Afghanistan’s new defence minister next April and to open a new chapter in mutual cooperation in the defence sector.

In the Wednesday meeting, the Afghan official appreciated Iran’s stances on the peace process in Afghanistan and stressed the importance of cooperation between the neighbouring countries to help peace efforts come to fruition.

He emphasized that friendship with Iran is very important to his country and will not be eclipsed by relations with any other country because Kabul regards its ties with Tehran as independent of any other relations.

Araqchi, in turn, praised the Afghan president’s prudence in opening a new chapter in defence cooperation between the two countries.

Given the commonalities and deep-rooted and brotherly bonds between the two nations, he said, peace, stability and security in both countries are interrelated.

He noted that Iran believes its relations with Afghanistan are not affected by ties with other countries. He referred to common threats facing the two nations, especially terrorism, and emphasized the necessity of closer bilateral cooperation in order to counter threats. He also expressed that partnership between the two sides will gradually lead to closer cooperation at higher levels.

Araqchi also highlighted Tehran’s readiness to help the Afghan government advance the peace process in the country.

Last week, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani called on the Taliban militant group to join peace talks “without preconditions,” even as he called on the outfit to accept the rule of law.

The president made the offer at the start of the second Kabul Process Conference attended by officials from around 25 countries in the capital, Kabul.

He said a framework for peace talks had to be created, with the Taliban recognized as a legitimate group.

“We are making this offer without preconditions in order to lead to a peace agreement,” Ghani said. “We will consider the Taliban’s view in the peace talks.”

Iran Rejects Allegations Raised in Saudi-Egyptian Statement

In a Wednesday statement, Qassemi rejected such accusations as baseless and unwarranted, saying that such moves amount to insistence on the destructive mistakes of the past.

Qassemi underlined that the Islamic Republic of Iran regards the rehashing of groundless accusations against it by certain regional countries as a reason for their failure to face the realities in the region and the world.

“It is regrettable that diplomatic and political meetings between the officials of certain countries in our region has, instead of leading to the settlement of problems and getting out of the long drawn-out current situation, turned into an arena for levelling unfounded accusations against other regional countries,” said Qassemi.

He said the repetition of imaginary charges and insistence on a mistake which has already been tested several times and proven futile will have no outcome other than a vicious circle of problems in the region.

At a time when the Middle East needs logic and realism, such moves will drag the region into long-running enmity, antagonizing others and making false threats, which will only lead to backwardness, divergence and abuse by enemies and ill-wishers, he added.

“The accusation that Iran is meddling in regional countries is condemned, in any form and by anybody, and the Islamic Republic of Iran has always prioritised its neighbours in its foreign policy, and has tried, in one way or another, to help resolve regional disputes and boost convergence and establish security and stability in the region,” he said.

Iran Allocates $100m for Production of Two Vaccines

According to Health Ministry Spokesman Iraj Harirchi says the withdrawal of the fund has been authorised by the Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

“The withdrawal of $100 million for [producing] these two vaccines has been finalized”, Harirchi said in a regular press briefing on Monday.

The fund will be spent on importing the know-how of the manufacturing process of pneumococcal and rotavirus vaccines, which prevent pneumonia and severe diarrhea, respectively, he added.

Harirchi said the Pasteur Institute has been tasked with producing the vaccines.

The Pasteur Institute is a leading regional facility in the development and manufacture of vaccines, a Farsi report by IRNA said.

The allocation of the fund was approved by the Iranian parliament in their latest open session on Saturday, when they reviewed the details of the fiscal year 2018-19 budget law.

Iran’s National Development Fund, the country’s foreign currency reserves, was founded in 2000.

Its objective was to save money for the next generations of Iranians and to make sure that the country’s economy survives when there is a plunge in the price of oil, Iran’s main source of income.

According to the Constitution, the authorisation of the withdrawal of funds from the NDF is part of the responsibilities of the Leader.

Iranian Anti-Corruption NGO Launches Petition Website

The website, daad.ir, will help improve transparency of the government’s actions, which in turn leads to reduced government corruption, bribery and other malfeasance, said Ahmad Tavakkoli, the founder of the non-governmental organization.

Iranians can submit their petitions requesting demands that could be a priority for a huge number of people, and start gathering signatures after they are published on the website.

After there are enough signatories, the wining petitions will be pursued by the Justice and Transparency Watch, the Persian-language Tasnim News Agency quoted Tavakkoli as saying.

In the opening ceremony held in Tehran on Tuesday, a petition was published requesting the government to implement an article of the sixth development plan (2016-2021) that says it should publicise the pay and benefits for government employees.

Iran Not Threat to Any Country: President Rouhani

Addressing a Wednesday cabinet meeting in Tehran, Rouhani noted that “Iran is a threat to no one. The Islamic Republic seeks stability and security in the whole region.”

However, he added, “it will defend its rights strongly.”

“Those who for 70 years have been fomenting chaos, war and destruction in the region and have committed genocide and caused the Sabra and Shatila [massacres], are not in a position to talk about Iran’s threat,” Rouhani said.

He was referring to the massacre of hundreds and perhaps thousands of civilians in the Palestinian refugee camps of Sabra and Shatila in southern Lebanon in 1982. Former Israeli premier Ariel Sharon, who at the time was Israel’s minister for military affairs, was commanding Israeli forces who had encircled the Sabra and Shatila camps while their allied forces were slaughtering the victims.

Rouhani’s comments came after Netanyahu described Iran as a danger and an aggressive empire in his address before the influential lobby group American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in Washington Tuesday, a day after talks with US President Donald Trump.

“Darkness is descending on our region. Iran is building an aggressive empire,” AFP quoted him as saying.

“The force behind so much of what is bad is this radical tyranny in Iran. I have a message for you today, it’s a very simple one: we must stop Iran, we will stop Iran,” Netanyahu claimed.

Rouhani further noted that regional governments need not to be wary of Iran’s power.

“History tells that no one should be wary of Iran’s weapons, missiles or its defensive power,” he said.

“During the years after the [1979] revolution, we never assaulted other countries, while there were opportunities we could take if we were after hegemonism”.

The president said Iran develops its military might for deterrence, not attacking other countries.

“We never bombarded our neighbours … and not only we didn’t displace people from their lands, but we embraced refugees from other countries”, Rouhani said, referring to Iran’s warm welcome of Kuwaitis and Iraqis fleeing the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990.

The war came shortly after the end of the Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988), during which Kuwait was a top sponsor of the former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

“Iran [seeks] stability and security in the whole region. We want all regional countries to be on the path of growth”, he said.

British PM Urged to Condemn Saudis’ Crimes ahead of Bin Salman’s Visit

The British opposition Labour Party leader said Tuesday that May should tell Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman that Britain would stop providing arms to Riyadh.

Bin Salman’s three-day visit will begin with a lunch with Queen Elizabeth on Wednesday.

His stay in the UK will include two audiences with the British Royal family, a briefing with national security officials, and a visit to the prime minister’s country residence.

“Theresa May should use this visit to announce the UK will no longer supply arms to Saudi Arabia while the devastating Saudi-led bombing of Yemen continues and make clear Britain’s strong opposition to widespread human and civil rights abuses in Saudi Arabia,” Corbyn said.

Saudi Arabia and its partners launched a war on Yemen in March 2015 to reinstall its former Riyadh-allied government. The military aggression has so far killed over 13,600 Yemenis.

The war is being led by bin Salman, also Saudi Arabia’s defense minister, with the help of the US and the UK.

May’s government has remained defiant in the face of growing pressure to stop arms exports to Saudi Arabia, defending the sales amid evidence of war crimes and civilian deaths in Yemen.

The UK has increased its weapons sales by around 500 percent since the onset of the Saudi invasion, according to a report by The Independent.

The UK has, so far, sold more than six billion pounds of arms to Saudi Arabia.

The weapons sold by Britain, which has also been providing logistical and arms support for the bombardment, include precision-guided bombs.

“Time and time again, UK ministers have turned a blind eye to Saudi Arabia’s atrocious human rights record – barely mentioning the country’s crackdown on peaceful opposition figures, or the alarming prevalence of torture, unfair trials and grisly executions,” Amnesty International UK’s Director, Kate Allen, has said.

US Using Dollar as Economic Weapon against Other Countries: Iran

Head of the Iranian Passive Defence Organization Brigadier General Gholam-Reza Jalali has touched upon the establishment of a headquarters for economic war at the US Treasury.
“In this headquarters, a strategy has been defined in different forms and based on sanctions, and they have tried to designate the dollar as the pivot of economic transaction. For example, when Mr. Kerry was speaking in favour of the approval of the JCPOA at the US Congress, he said if the US didn’t approve the JCPOA, its most important weapon, i.e. the dollar, would be eliminated,” said the official, according to a Farsi report by Tasnim.

He said now the US Treasury and State Departments have focused their attentions on controlling the financial system of other countries.

He said the Americans’ strong point in the economic war is the use of the greenback.

“The Federal Reserve has officially announced that it has turned the dollar into a weapon in the economic war, and controls it through SWIFT,” he said.

The official then noted that Iran will probably get involved in an economic war.

“When the issue came up, two viewpoints emerged about it. One view regarded the outbreak of an economic war as likely, and the other was an optimistic viewpoint that maintained such a thing wouldn’t happen,” said the official.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he said the emergence of crypto-currencies is a major change in the monetary and banking system.

“In this system, there will be money laundering, financial offences and tax evasion due to a lack of supervision,” he said.

“Security challenges are the most important issue which will surface with the expansion of the electronic monetary system, and cyberspace will turn into a heaven for hackers, and no state body will be able to compensate for the losses and harm caused by that,” he said.
