Fire in Korean Hospital Kills 37, Wounds 70 (+Video)

Initial reports indicate that around 200 patients were inside the building and the adjoining nursing home at the time of the fire, the cause of which remains unknown.

The blaze is thought to have started in the emergency room at Sejong Hospital.

If the reports are true, the fire would be one of the deadliest South Korea has suffered in recent years, with the death toll still expected to rise.

Firefighters said the victims appeared to have died from smoke inhalation. Three hospital medical staff – a doctor, nurse and nursing assistant – are among the victims, BBC reported.

Authorities have given varying death tolls, with police earlier saying 41 had died, but fire officials and hospital sources now say at least 37 are dead.

Miryang is about 270km (168 miles) south-east of the capital, Seoul.

Iran Urges Collective Cooperation to Tackle Regional Security Challenges

In an exclusive interview with Al-Alam TV on Thursday, Shamkhani called the JCPOA a comprehensive document which cannot be changed under any condition.

“The JCPOA meets the least demands of the Islamic Republic raised during our talks with the six powers,” he noted, as quoted in a Farsi report by the SNSC’s website.

Shamkhani also slammed the US for hampering the implementation of the JCPOA and said despite Iran’s full commitment to the nuclear deal, it has not yet benefited from the economic openness the deal was expected to bring.  

The Iranian official dismissed as flagrant and delusional the remarks by the US president who has called for revising the JCPOA.  

Shamkhani also described Iran’s defence capabilities as totally indigenous which have been built on the 8-year-old experience of the Sacred Defence (Iraq’s war on Iran) and the oppressed Iranian nation’s hapless efforts to meet its basic needs to defend itself against the aggressors.

He said the nation will press ahead strongly with its development plan within its pre-emptive measures against threats.

“Based on the national consensus among the officials of the Islamic Republic establishment, Iran will hold no negotiation with any other state over its missile and defence capabilities,” he pointed out.

Shamkhani also touched on the regional policy of Iran and its future strategies saying the measures of the Islamic Republic in the region don’t violate the resolutions passed by the United Nations Security Council.

“The US’ attempts to portray a false image of Iran’s stabilizing behaviours in the region are rooted in Washington and its allies’ failures in using terrorism as a tool to impose its will on the independent states of the region.”

Shamkhani then referred to the latest moves by the US diplomatic apparatus to make coalitions with the European and Arab countries against Iran and said, “Following the spread of Takfiri terrorism in Europe and the close encounter of European citizens with terrorist threats, it seems the European governments have realized the leading role of Iran in fight against terror and understood the US’ destructive policies in the region,” he concluded.

In a tweet published on Thursday, Zarif said, “No amount of ‘alternative facts’ by Trump and Co’s echo chamber, ‘vision of light’ spin by KSA, or credit-grabbing by the US for defeat of ISIS will change the facts that it was Iran, who helped the people of Iraq and Syria defeat ISIS, and it was the US and KSA who armed it.”

Saudi Minister of Foreign Affair Adel al-Jubeir on Wednesday accused Iran of destabilizing the Middle East through backing sectarian conflict and terror.

He told the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that Tehran is promoting a “vision of darkness” in the region.

“In the Middle East, we have two competing visions: We have a vision of light … and we have a vision of darkness,” Al-Jubeir told the forum.

Qassemi dismissed as baseless any report on the last-minute cancellation of the visit to Davos by the Iranian foreign minister, saying despite receiving an official invitation to attend the forum, Zarif preferred to stay in Tehran to oversee the implementation of some structural changes in the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

In a Farsi interview with the Fars News Agency, the spokesman also said Iranian foreign minister decided not to have any foreign trips these days due to the importance of implementing the fundamental changes in the ministry.

“Since Iranian foreign minister had held talks with a number of delegates attending Davos over the past few months, he decided to stay in Tehran and put his focus on the implementation of the structural changes in his ministry,” he noted.

Qassemi went on to say that the structural changes, initiated by Zarif, had been under discussion over the past years. “The changes were finalized after long hours of discussion among experts, specialists and high and mid-ranking officials at the ministry.”

The spokesman also cited the changes as the most fundamental ones in the structure of Iran’s Foreign Ministry and added the new changes have been implemented since January 21.

Earlier a report by Reuters claimed that Iranian foreign minister decided to cancel his visit to Davos at the last minute because US President Donald Trump was expected to deliver speech during the Annual World Economic Forum.

The four-day forum in the Swiss Alps began on January 23 with chief executives and world leaders in attendance. The main theme of the 48th edition of the annual World Economic Forum is ‘Creating a Shared Future in a Fractured World.’

Speaking in a Wednesday meeting with Alaeddin Boroujerdi, the Chairman of Iran’s Parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, in the Belgian capital city of Brussels, McAllister said, “We attach great importance to the ties with Iran.”

According to a Farsi report by IRNA, the European lawmaker also noted that he will travel to Tehran in the near future to continue the talks with Iranian officials.

McAllister noted that Europe strongly supports the nuclear deal with Iran as a reliable international treaty and should extend its cooperation with Tehran within this framework.

“These kinds of talks will create mutual understanding and boost joint cooperation in areas like human rights,” noted the European legislator.

Boroujerdi, for his part, highlighted that the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to take major steps and extend bilateral cooperation with the European Parliament within the framework of mutual respect and common interests.

The senior lawmaker, who has travelled to Brussels upon the official invitation of McAllister, went on to say that it is the time for Europe to decide based on its own interests paying no heed to the US.

He added that the repeated opposition of the European Union to the anti-JCPOA policies of Trump is a good sign of this policy.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is seriously opposed to [production of] weapons of mass destruction, especially the nuclear ones. Therefore, the only way to implement a policy of deterrence against enemies is to have missile capability which is not negotiable with any country,” underlined the Iranian MP.

Boroujerdi further pointed out that Iran and many other countries including the European Union member states have reached a consensus on fighting terrorism.

During the meeting, the two sides also exchanged views on the recent developments in the West Asia, and the ways to develop cooperation with the European Parliament.

Iran Allows No Interference in Its Internal Affairs: Commander

Deputy Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Brigadier General Massoud Jazayeri says Iran allows neither France nor any other state to meddle in its internal affairs.

“We strongly reject the idea of holding talks on our defence and missile programs as well the regional resistance against certain regional states whose dictatorship has been revealed on different occasions,” the general was quoted as saying in a Farsi report by Al-Alam news website.

“In line with pre-planned measures and goals, Iran’s Armed Forces have put further strengthening of the country’s defence capabilities on their agenda,” he said.

The Iranian senior military commander added that Iran will continue the development of its defence capabilities as a preemptive measure amid the enemies’ overt military threats against the Islamic Republic.

He made the remarks in reaction to the French foreign minister’s claims about talks between Iran and big powers over the Islamic Republic’s defence and missile capabilities.

Iran has time and again underlined that its missile program is for defensive purposes and not open to any negotiations.

They intervened after the plunge of the Iranian rial which has dropped to around 45,000 against the US dollar from 37,700 in mid-2017, Tasnim news agency reported on Wednesday.

It said Tehran prosecutor’s office had announced the arrest of several suspects while police had moved in to identify those behind the volatility in the exchange market.

“We are investigating those who impact the foreign exchange market and those who support them behind the scenes and today it has become clear who these individuals are,” the news agency quoted chief of the Iranian Police Criminal Investigation Department as saying.

Tasnim said free-market trading in the rial had almost ground to a halt in Tehran on Wednesday because of the tense security environment, with money changers ready to cut and run.

Some currency exchange shops in downtown Tehran around the Ferdowsi street stayed shut Wednesday after police closed down four centers over the last week and another on Tuesday.

Over the week, President Hassan Rouhani and Governor of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) Valiollah Seif have tried to soothe the market but those efforts have failed to arrest the rial’s slide.

A series of factors have contributed to the plunge to spin out of control where the CBI had been orchestrating a gradual depreciation of the rial since last year in order to ride out the inflation.

Ever since 2012 when the rial lost about two-thirds of its value against the dollar under former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, money exchange stores have mushroomed across major Iranian cities amid rising demand for foreign currencies.

On Monday, Seif warned that those speculating on the fall of the rial could burn their fingers because the rial was set to rebound in the coming months.

“Those who are investing their resources in foreign exchange will suffer losses in the end,” he was quoted as saying.

According to the International Monetary Fund, Iran’s foreign reserves are estimated at over $130 billion which are enough to check an uncontrolled slide of the rial.

President Rouhani said on Monday night that the recent turmoil in the currency market was due to temporary factors which would not last long.

Commercial bankers have linked the rial’s slide partly to seasonal demand for dollars, which rises around the end of the Persian year when many Iranians travel abroad.

Others say US President Donald Trump’s hostile rhetoric, including his recent threat to scrap a landmark nuclear deal with Iran, has played a role.

Range of Iran’s Missiles Determined by Threats: Military Official

Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan, an advisor to the Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution in defence affairs, said the country’s missile power is a key element of deterrence in the country, and the officials of the Islamic Republic have repeatedly stated this.

“This does not mean that we cannot produce missiles with higher ranges, but this is not our policy. We do not see a threat to increase the range of missiles,” Dehqan said in a Farsi interview with Mehr News Agency.

He added that the United States, Saudi Arabia, the Israeli regime and their regional allies are seeking to restrict Iran’s defence capability, and they are trying to have the EU along themselves in introducing Iran’s missile power as a threatening element.

“But they must know that the Islamic Republic of Iran’s defence policy is based on effective deterrence. Among the weapons and capabilities we have, the surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missile power is one of the country’s top priorities. We need to work on them as much as possible to confront possible threats because we do believe that attempts to defend our country and increasing our defence power is a legitimate right of ours.”

General Dehqan went on to say that every country must have the ability to defend itself, so that it can safeguard its identity, territory and establishment.

“If any country wants to threaten our country, we will stand against it using all our power,” he stressed.

He further maintained that “We do not need any endorsement from the United States and its allies to defend our country. Based on Iran’s historical experience, the defence capability guarantees our national security. All the world saw that during the 8 years of imposed war all the facilities and equipment were provided for Iraq, but Iran did not receive any facilities.”

Elsewhere in his remarks, the senior military official noted that the economic warfare and the Iranophobia project are being pursued by the enemies very seriously.

“They want to introduce Iran as a country that destabilizes the region and the world, and naturally our defensive power as a deterrent and security element is one of the issues that the West wants to curtail.”

Dehqan also mentioned that during the 8-year war and after that the West did not have any interaction with Iran in the technical, defence and military spheres.

“What we have achieved in the field of defence and security is the result of the efforts of our own scientists, engineers and experts. In other words, what we have gained in the defence and military sectors is the result of reliance on domestic capabilities and the efforts of our own specialists to reach a point that we would not need other countries, and in this way they cannot impose pressure on us,” concluded Dehqan.

5 Killed, Wounded in Iran Bitumen Storage Fire (+Video)

The incident happened on Wednesday afternoon at the bitumen Storage of Geransang Mehr Company, western Bandar Abbas.

According to Farsi report by the IRIB News Agency, an official at the fire department of Bandar Abbas has confirmed the number of casualties saying that the firefighters have managed to contain the fire and will extinguish it in a couple of hours.

A member of the board of directors of the bitumen society of Hormozgan province has said that the fire took place in one of the storage tanks of an affiliated company whose task is to heat bitumen carriers.
