Tabriz Home to World’s Biggest Roofed Bazaar

For centuries, the endless labyrinthine of architectural marvels combined with colorful charm of traditional goods and scent of oriental spices has allured visitors of the bazaar.

Located at the center of Tabriz, the complex was one of the most important international trade hubs between the 12th and 18th centuries and it still serves as the economic heart of northwestern Iran.

Many world explorers and writers throughout the history, including Marco Polo, Yaqut al-Hamawi and Jean Chardin, have lauded the glory of Tabriz Bazaar as a remarkable part of their adventures.

In 2010, the UNESCO declared Tabriz Bazaar as a World Heritage Site.

Historic Bazaar of Tabriz in Northwestern Iran

As it was located on the Silk Road, thousands of caravans from different Asian, African and European countries passed though Tabriz bazaar on a daily basis, making it one of the world’s most flourishing commercial hubs over centuries.

Tabriz bazaar saw its most glorious days in the 16th century, when Tabriz became the capital city of the Safavid kingdom, but the city lost status as a capital in the 17th century.

The bazaar, however, still remained flourishing. In 19th century, trade volume at Tabriz bazaar constituted over 25 percent of Iran’s business transactions, passing even higher than that of the capital city of Tehran.

The complex was not built at one phase and different parts were added to bazaar by different architects at several stages.

The bazaar reaches the historic Jameh Mosque of Tabriz to the west, the provincial governor palace to the east and Mehraneh River to the north.

The one-square-kilometer trade center consists of 5,500 stores selling the products of over 40 types of professions, 60 timchehs (sub-bazaars) and saras (small caravansaries), 30 mosques, 20 alleys and sub-bazaars, five baths, 12 schools and five museums.

Similar to many other Middle Eastern bazaars, Tabriz Bazaar was a key commercial center for religious minorities, with Armenians and Georgians owning a major part of businesses and conducting important transactions with European and Central Asian merchants.

The bazaar was destroyed as a result of several massive earthquakes, but it was reconstructed afterwards. In the latest case in 1780, the bazaar was completely destroyed by a huge earthquake and was rebuilt flowingly.

In 2,000, the Cultural Heritage Organization of Iran began a renovation project for the bazaar in cooperation with the shop owners. The project won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2013.

The masterfully-designed high vaults and domes of the structure decorated with intricate brickworks and tileworks have turned the complex into an outstanding masterpiece in oriental architecture.

The complex consists of several sub-bazaars or timchehs. The most important and luxurious part of Tabriz Bazaar is Amir Bazaar, also known as Timcheh Amir, where shop exclusively sell gold and jewelry. The section has the largest dome in the entire bazaar.

Another important section is Mozaffarieh Bazaar, also known as Timcheh Mozaffarieh, for sale of exquisite Persian carpets. The most beautiful architectural design in the complex belongs to this section.

Other sub-bazaars are dedicated for the sale of a variety of other handicrafts, foodstuff and household items.

The majority of timchehs and saras consist of three-floor buildings where the first floor is used as the warehouse, the second floor as the business office and third floor as the resting space.

Apart from its economic status, Tabriz Bazaar has also been a hub of key social and political developments in the Iranian history, including Iranian Constitutional Revolution in the beginning of the 20th century and Islamic Revolution in 1979.

It is also a center for holding important religious ceremonies, including Day of Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of third Shia leader Imam Hussein, when merchants cease trading 10 days in advance to hold different mourning ceremonies and assemblies at the venue.

The iconic complex still continues to wield influence over different cultural, social, economic and political arenas in Iran and it is considered as an outstanding example for coexistence of diverse cultures and a model for constructive interaction among different social strata.

Iran Gov’t under Fire for Inaction towards Netherlands’ Expulsion of Diplomats

Kayhan in a recent critical article that the two diplomats were ordered to leave the country after Amsterdam accused them of being involved in the murder of two anti-Iran individuals, namely Ahmad Nisi, a terrorist, and Ali Mo’tamed.

The newspaper takes a swipe at the Iranian government for issuing a statement in condemnation of the murder of Ahmad Nisi who, according to Kayhan, had the blood of many Iranians on his hands and was killed as a result of an internecine battle.

The Iranian ambassador was also summoned to the Netherlands’ General Intelligence and Security Service to be notified of Amsterdam’s decision to expel the two diplomats, writes Kayhan.

According to the daily, the Iranian ambassador did not show any reaction to the Netherlands’ statements and accusations. It said the ambassador expressed no official protest to Amsterdam’s accusing Iran of having committed the organized murders which had actually been the handiwork of terrorist groups, and simply asked the diplomats to leave the Netherlands because Amsterdam wanted them to.

Kayhan slams the Iranian government for not reciprocating the move. According to the paper, the Netherlands had given refuge to a terrorist, who had killed so many Iranians, but Iran remained silent without showing any proper reaction.

It is claimed that the Dutch government expelled the diplomats over the case of the murder of dissidents of the Iranian government.

Kayhan claimed that the Netherlands functions as an executive arm of the US and the Israeli regime in Iran, and is ramping up its activities in Iran by increasing the number of staff members at its embassy, designating a military attache (despite the lack of any military relations between Iran and the Netherlands), and seeking to provoke ethnic groups as well as anti-revolutionary currents inside Iran.

Tehran Rejects Pompeo’s “Ridiculous” Comments on Iranian Embassies’ Activities

In a Wednesday statement, Qassemi said accusations raised by Pompeo are part of the US’ targeted psychological wars against Iranian embassies in the world.

“The embassies of the Islamic Republic operate within the international conventions and based on reciprocal relations with the host countries and endeavour to expand Tehran’s friendly and bilateral relations with them,” he noted.

The spokesman also said levelling accusations against the Islamic Republic of Iran over its diplomatic activities is part of a new attempt by the US to sever Iran’s relations with other countries.

Qassemi said the contemporary history is replete with illegal measures and violations of the international law by the US embassies in the world.

The US embassies have been interfering in the internal affairs of the host countries and severing their foreign relations with the outside world, he added.

Pompeo makes the baseless accusations against Iran as there is strong evidence, provided by various sources, that the US embassies are engaged in espionage and destructive measures in different countries, he said, adding that hundreds of military and security personnel are operating under a diplomatic guise in these embassies.

Pompeo on Tuesday accused Iran of using its embassies to plot what he called terrorist attacks in Europe. He also warned Tehran that its actions have “a real high cost” after it threatened to disrupt Mideast oil supplies.

Pompeo’s comments came during a trip to the United Arab Emirates as senior US officials were wrapping up three days of talks in neighbouring Saudi Arabia on countering Iran and starving it of oil revenues.

“Just this past week there were Iranians arrested in Europe who were preparing to conduct a terror plot in Paris, France. We have seen this malign behaviour in Europe,” Pompeo said in an interview with Sky News Arabia.

Iran denies any involvement and says the allegations against its diplomats are intended to damage its relations with the European Union amid negotiations between Iran and the three European states over the future of the Iran nuclear deal following the unilateral withdrawal of the US from the multi-national treaty.

Velayati Says His Visit to Moscow Not Affected by Israeli PM’s Trip

Speaking to reporters upon his arrival in Moscow on Wednesday, Velayati pointed to Netanyahu’s upcoming visit to the Russian Federation and said, “He is an itinerant person who travels to somewhere in the world every day.”

“He makes baseless and illogical remarks and nobody cares about his words,” the Iranian official said.

“Therefore, his presence or absence in Russia has no effect on our strategic mission,” he added.

Velayati is in Moscow in a bid to submit messages from Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei and also President Hassan Rouhani to Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi.

Qassemi said the letters are aimed at “emphasizing the importance of expanded relations between Iran and Russia”.

Velayati will likely hold a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday.

Qassemi told the IRIB that Velayati will also pay a visit to China to convey messages from Ayatollah Khamenei and Rouhani to Chinese leaders.

He said that after the US’ withdrawal from Iran nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which was a strategic mistake made by the US president, the Islamic Republic of Iran decided to send special envoys to convey the messages of top Iranian leaders to other countries.

“In these messages, our country’s views and stances regarding the US’ selfish and illegal behavior are explained to other countries,” he said.

Interest in Football Rising in China Thanks to Big Players

Now, there are a lot of football stars in the elite of the Chinese Championships and world champions play even in the second division. For example, the coach of one of the teams is Fabio Cannavaro leading Alexandre Pato and Moraes Júnior. Due to involving such stars, the interest in football in such a big country is rising.

Moreover, other countries can even learn much from the Chinese practice, as there are strict requirements for the need for involving local players.

The website 777score.com traditionally presents the timely data on major football competitions. Now, a special attention is paid to China League 2, as the overall level of the league is quite higher. This concerns Asian football in general. The teams of this region haven’t recently been popular but now they can afford to hold friendly matches and compete with serious competitors. The Chinese Championship doesn’t react to alternates, as if the player would enter the Norway 3rd Division.

Literate Football Development and Popularization System

Local functionaries strive for creating conditions to let the team of the Celestial Kingdom be really competitive. For the last time, China took part in the World Championship in 2002, and after this, the team had almost no theoretical chances for success.

The officials strive for breaking such a trend by inviting experienced Europeans. However, this doesn’t always meet everybody’s expectations. For example, let’s remember Carlos Tevez who came to China for record salary in €20 million but played only several matches and started to complain to his agents about the local climate and missing his family. As a result, the parties have decided to terminate the contract but such approach didn’t make this league more popular with fans.

Time will show how serious Chinese investments will be and how noticeable the progress will be. Top-rated stars play here:

  •         Hulk;
  •         Witsel;
  •         Oscar.

Exactly thanks to them, it’s possible to enhance the overall level of the championship and improve the attitude to it.

Trump’s Tweet on Iranian Boats Provocative, Showing Desire for Warmongering

In his new tweet, Trump claimed that Iranian naval forces confronted US warships in the Persian Gulf 22 times in 2015, 36 times in 2016 and 14 times in 2017. He also claimed that the figure reached zero in 2018, i.e. during his presidency.

He had already claimed in an interview with Fox News that former US President Barack Obama had been lenient towards Iran, and that the strict approach adopted by the current US administration has made Iran back down.

He claimed the Iranians who would chant “Death to America” during the Obama administration are not saying that anymore during his presidency.

He also said Iranian boats have not been seen circling around American ships recently, saying they know that they will be shot out of water if they harass US warships.

The whole story begs the question of whether Trump is seeking to stir up the situation in the Persian Gulf and push out of US borders a domestic crisis caused by his election campaign offences. If he cannot take the crisis to the Korean Peninsula, he might as well take it to the Persian Gulf!

In his tweet, he says he has been able to hold back Iranian naval forces and keep them from approaching American warships in the Persian Gulf. The whole purpose of his tweet was to prove that “Obama was weak.”

Now we should wait and see if Trump’s power will help build a safer world, or eliminate the current level of peace and security for all people around the world for the years to come, a report by IRNA said.

People of which countries are used to living in peace more than Iranians? With Trump’s short-sighted policies all around, what future lies ahead for the better-off societies of the world?

It seems that if the war between oil tankers gets started, Trump’s methods of marketing US arms for the sheikhs in the Middle East region will not work anymore, neither will his methods of defrauding rulers of the Arab countries rimming this waterway which is vital in transferring oil. The sheikhs must be at their desks, not in shelters!

Recipe for Ghormeh Sabzi Stew

ghormeh-sabzi

Iranian dishes excel at making people who have never tried them fall in love at the first bite. The unique combination of spices and flavorings with a wide range of vegetables, herbs, fruit, grains, nuts, meat and most importantly rice only needs the wand of Iranian cuisine to perform magic and leave an explosion of unforgettable tastes in the mouth. Their delectable smell, delicious look and perfectly pleasant taste make it almost impossible to resist them. To share the gastronomic delights of Iran, IFP has decided to file a series of recipes for mouth-watering Iranian dishes.

ghorme-sabzi-2

Ingredients:

Serves 4-6

1. 750 grams – 1 kg cubed boneless lamb leg/beef

2. One cup red beans (100 grams) – It is advised that you soak them at least for half an hour.

3. 500 grams finely chopped parsley

4. 250 grams finely chopped wild leek

5. 100 grams finely chopped coriander

6. 100 grams finely chopped spinach

7. 50 grams finely chopped fenugreek

It is worth noting that there are no hard-and-fast instructions about the amount of herbs used in this dish. For instance, some prefer to go heavy on wild leak and use less parsley, so the amount of each herb used depends on your taste. More wild leek will add a sharp taste to the stew. Too much fenugreek will turn it bitter. Spinach plays the role of a thickener and won’t let the final stew be too watery. The amount of coriander should not outweigh other herbs. All herbs have to be finely chopped; otherwise the stew won’t look and taste nice at the end.

8. One-two large onions which are peeled and finely chopped

9. Three-four dried limes – they give the stew a special flavor. Try to buy them from Iranian grocery stores. Some recommend replacing them with other flavorings, but if you do, a special unique taste will be missing. They should be soaked in water for a few minutes and pierced with a fork. Avoid overusing limes, because they will give a bitter taste to your stew.

10. Verjuice [a highly acidic juice made by pressing unripe grapes] to taste

11. Salt, ground black pepper and turmeric to taste

12. Oil

13. Water

Directions:

Bags of frozen fried herbs to be used for this stew are a fixture of almost every Iranian housewife’s freezer because they can save time in cooking this all but time-consuming dish.

1. Fry all finely chopped herbs with a liberal amount of oil until they take on a nice dark color.

2. Fry onions with oil over a medium heat in a separate pot until they turn soft and golden brown, add turmeric and pepper to it. Salt can be added toward the end of cooking to stop meat from toughening and prolonging the cooking time.

3. Add the red beans to fried onions and sauté them for a few minutes. [In case you want to use canned beans, you should add them in the last 30 minutes.]

4. Add the meat cubes and sear them. [Some prefer the meat cubes in this dish to be large, if you don’t like it that way, you can cut them into small ones].

5. Now, add the fried herbs and fry them with other ingredients for a second time.

6. Add a liberal amount of water to the pot and bring it to the boil, then turn down the heat, keep the lid on the pot and and allow it to simmer gently for 2-3 hours [until the meat and beans are tender and well cooked]. Avoid adding too much water because you will later have difficulty getting rid of it when the ingredients are thoroughly cooked. At the end, your stew must not be watery or thin.

7. In the last one hour, pierced dried limes can be added. At the end, they should be fully soaked and soft. However, they should not have fallen apart.

8. Toward the end of the cooking you can add salt and verjuice to taste.

The stew, which should look thick and a bit oily at the end, is served with rice.

“US, Allies Seeking to Destroy Iran by Sowing Public Dissatisfaction”

US Push for Economic Collapse of Iran Has Gone Nowhere: VP

In a Tuesday address to the opening ceremony of a steel production project in the central city of Isfahan, Jahangiri underlined that the US is after mounting further pressure and imposing more sanctions on the Islamic Republic, adding Iran has no way but to bravely resist the pressure.

“We have had various deep differences with the US and its western allies on a number of issues over the past decades. One of the main sticking points on which we held talks with them was Iran’s nuclear program. We reached an agreement with the six powers over the issue and fulfilled our pledges under the deal but the US, instead, violated all its commitments and pulled out of the deal,” he was quoted as saying in a report by the government’s official website.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian vice-president said as announced by the US administration, the country’s Department of Treasury has turned into a room for waging economic war on Iran.

The main goal of the US administration is to inflict a serious blow on the Iranian economy and make people’s daily lives more difficult in a bid to sow dissatisfaction with the Islamic Establishment.

“The US is seeking to press ahead with own goals by creating public dissatisfaction in Iran,” he noted.

According to Jahangiri, the strategy which is jointly pursued by the US and its regional allies, Israel and Saudi Arabia, is to exert further pressure on Iran from various directions to achieve their goals.

He warned about the harsh situation that Iran will face in the future and said the states on which the Islamic Republic counted on appeared too weak against the US pressures.

Jahangiri also pointed to the US’ bid to halt Iran’s oil exports, as the country’s main source of revenue, and said, “This is a nonsense claim because to translate it into reality, the US needs to convince other states to accept the pressure without any resistance.”

He called for concerted attempts by all Iranian sectors against the US’ measures and said Iran should do its utmost to export the additional amount of its crude oil.

The Iranian vice-president said the US is also trying to cut Iran’s main industrial exports, which amounts to $45 billion including some major products like steel, copper and petrochemical products.

“Today, Iran’s industrial units should serve as the main players of Iran’s fight against the economic war. They have proved their capabilities over the past decades,” he said.

Jahangiri called on the industrial units to increase their production and exports compared with the previous years and foil the enemies’ plots to inflict a heavy economic blow on the Islamic Republic.

He then elaborated on the US’ future strategy to exert pressure on Iran and said the next step that the White House will take against Iran is to block ways through which Iran can receive the revenue of its exports.

“It will seek to block any channel through which Iran can receive the money of its exports. To this end, it will also mount pressure on the world’s banking system. But we have already found a way out of the upcoming problem. We have held talks with the European states as well as China and Russia to resolve the problem,” he said.

He then referred to the US’ measures to stop Iran’s imports and said Washington has already imposed sanctions on Iran’s shipping and to cope with the US pressure, all sectors of the Islamic Republic should remain steadfast in pressing ahead with their projects.

“In the past, they imposed sanctions on Iran to pressurize it into sitting for talks. We held talks with them over the nuclear issue but they are again imposing sanctions. It means that they are seeking to first destroy Iran and then collapse the Islamic Establishment. Unlike the Zionist regime, the US administration doesn’t say explicitly that it is after the destruction of Iran.”

He said each sanction can turn into an opportunity for Iran, adding Iran can reach self-sufficiency as a main strategy against the outside economic pressure.

“The domestic producers can take advantage of the current situation and sell their products at an appropriate price after promoting their quality.”

He then expressed regret that some people inside the country are after their own profits without caring about the hard fight of the Iranian nation against a big enemy like the US.

Jahangiri said the government will deal seriously with such people.

Iran’s Minister for Industry, Mine and trade Mohammad Shariatmadari then took the podium and said back in 2013, Iran produced 23 million tonnes of raw steel but the figure has already reached 34 million.

“Saudis Collected 3.5 Million Gold Coins from Iran Market”

The claim was made by Javad Karimi Qoddosui, a member of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission.

“Over the past two months, three million and five hundred gold coins were collected from the country and transferred to Iraq’s Sulaymaniyah,” said the MP, as reported by Fararu news website.

He further claimed that the Saudis have set up a base in Sulaymaniyah to launch an economic war against Iran.
“The Saudis commissioned 13 individuals to buy whatever gold coins and dollars available on the Tehran market,” said the legislator.

He claimed they were on a mission to buy all the gold coins and the greenback on the market, even at 20% higher than the going rate.

“The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) arrested three of them,” he added.

“People demand officials try and punish these individuals,” he said.

“Execute these individuals!” he said, addressing authorities.

Karimi Qoddusi, a conservative MP and critical of the administration of President Hassan Rouhani, is known for his fiery speeches against the Iran nuclear deal. Following Washington’s unilateral withdrawal from the JCPOA, he is now more critical of the Rouhani administration’s foreign policy.
