Lawrence Wilkerson, the chief of staff of former US Secretary of State Colin Powell, made the comment in an interview with the Al Mayadeen news network.

He said they wanted to see the fall of Syria and Assad, and their second objective was Iraq, but they failed, and now they have focused their attention on Iran.

Wilkerson said they believe the only way to engage with 75 million Iranians is to attack the country. However, he added, such a move will be a disaster 10 times worse than the war on Iraq.

According to Wilkerson, remarks by Bolton and others about containing Iran in Syria means that the Israelis and Americans will tell Assad through diplomatic channels that Iran and Hezbollah should leave Syria. Wilkerson said he believes they put pressure on Iran through Syria and that they are likely to succeed. He says Moscow will also be ready to send Iran some messages at the beginning. He said if Iran is a major power in Syria, it will not be in Moscow’s interest. However, he added, Putin knows the game of chess well enough. Wilkerson said he believes Tehran-Moscow relations are not cordial ones, but a relationship based on interests.

The chief of staff to the former secretary of state also weighed in on Trump’s policy vis-à-vis Iran. He said he was cognizant of what was going on in US Congress. Wilkerson said what worries him is that if US lawmakers move toward adopting a law on bringing about a regime change in Iran like what they did in 1998, it will be regarded as the official position of Washington. That is the same thing they did to Iraq, he added. According to Wilkerson, US legislators will finally pass such a law in eighteen months’ time.

In this interview, he weighed in on the reasons behind the US invasion of Iraq, saying the reason for the attack on Iraq was oil. He said Washington’s strategic objective was to make sure that the crude oil transferred via the Strait of Hormuz, i.e. a third of the world’s petroleum, kept being transferred at a steady rate and a good price.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Wilkerson referred to Washington-Moscow relations, saying the United States and Russia should sit down for talks.

He made the comment while referring to a meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Finland on July 16.

There is mutual respect between these religions in Iran, he noted, adding that Iranian Armenians attach significant respect to religious sites.

In an interview on the sidelines of the Armenians’ Badarak ceremony in Chaldoran, he said the Islamic Republic played a key role in preparing the ground for holding the annual gathering.

“Under the guidelines of the late founder of the Islamic Republic Imam Khomeini and the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Seyyed Ali Khamenei, there is no restriction on religious minorities for practicing their religions in Iran,” he said.

Thousands of Armenians from Iran and other nations including Armenia, Syria, Lebanon, the Netherlands, France, Austria, Germany and Canada took part in the three-day Badarak event which began on July 14.

Badarak ceremony is held to mark the martyrdom anniversary of Saint Thaddeus — one of the apostles of Jesus Christ (Peace Be upon Him).

During the ceremony, the worshippers perform religious practices, including sacrificing sheep, lighting candles, baptism of infants, etc.

Scores of Armenians, Assyrians and Catholics from Iran and other countries attend the annual event as part of their pilgrimage on the Day.

The ceremony is known as one of the largest religious ceremonies held by Armenians.

Qara Kelisa, also known as the St. Thaddeus Church, is one of the oldest and most notable surviving Christian monuments of Iran that has great significance for the country’s Armenian Orthodox community.

Armenians believe that Qara Kelisa is the world’s first church constructed in 68 CE by one of the apostles of Jesus, St. Thaddeus. According to Armenians, he had travelled to Armenia, the then part of the Persian Empire, to preach the teachings of Jesus Christ.

He further briefed the Lebanese side on Iran’s concise political and diplomatic attempts to find a political solution to the Syrian and Yemeni crises. Jaberi Ansari also underlined the importance of expansion of inter-regional contacts and cooperation.

President Rouhani Sends Message to Lebanese Counterpart

In a Monday meeting, the Iranian diplomat delivered President Hassan Rouhani’s message to Aoun as part of his tour of regional countries as the special envoy of the Iranian president.

“Iran attaches significant importance to expansion of ties and further cooperation with Lebanon and other regional states in all fields as well as finding a political solution to the regional crises,” he said.

The Lebanese president, for his part, said his country regards Israel’s possession of nuclear weapons as unacceptable, stressing that denuclearization of the whole region is among Lebanon’s principled policies.

He also referred to the negative fallouts of the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal on the regional stability and peace and said Lebanon supports the efforts by the Islamic Republic of Iran and the remaining sides of the JCPOA to save the multinational deal and Iran’s right to fully enjoy its political and economic benefits under the accord.

Preserving JCPOA a Success in Countering US’ Unilateralism

Later in the day, Jaberi Ansari also held talks with Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil.

During the talks, the Iranian diplomat said the Islamic Republic of Iran believes the success of its joint efforts with signatories to the JCPOA in order to preserve this multilateral international agreement and see Iran fully reap the benefits of the deal is a success for all countries in the region and in the world in countering the United States’ policy of unilateralism.

Jaberi Ansari further presented a report on Iran’s efforts within the framework of Astana talks to settle the political crisis in Syria. He also stressed that while major gains have been achieved in fighting terrorism, it is necessary to pay attention to the political and humanitarian dimensions of the Syria crisis.

He also said Iran and the other parties involved in the Astana talks will continue their constructive cooperation in the current stage to facilitate the process for the Syrian Constitutional Committee to begin work and speed up the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland.

Jaberi Ansari also touched upon the meetings he had with the Lebanese president and parliament speaker, and said he conveyed a message from Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to his Lebanese counterpart Michel Aoun.

Bassil, in turn, referred to the pressures put on the regional countries, including Iran and Lebanon, saying the pressures are aimed at “securing domination over us.”

Iran Files Suit against US for Violating 1955 Treaty of Amity

Qassemi made the comment while elaborating on the news announced by Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif regarding the lawsuit that Iran has lodged against the US.

“In order to make up for the United States’ re-imposition of illegal sanctions against our country, to reclaim the rights of the Iranian nation and to internationally sue the US for its violations, the Foreign Ministry, in coordination with the Presidential Office’s Centre for International Law Affairs and other relevant authorities, put on its agenda the filing of a complaint with the International Court of Justice against the US for breaching its international obligations, especially with regards to the Treaty of Amity, economic relations and consular rights in 1955,” he said.

“After receiving the viewpoints of Iranian and foreign international attorneys and legal advisors, the final lawsuit containing the Islamic Republic of Iran’s complaint over the [US’] violation of the Treaty of Amity was registered on July 16, 2018,” the spokesman noted.

“In this complaint, it is explained with evidence that the United States’ decision on May 8, 2018 to re-impose nuclear sanctions runs counter to the United States’ international obligations, especially articles 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, and the Treaty of Amity in 19655,” said Qassemi.

“The United States is obliged to stop these international breaches and compensate for all the damage inflicted,” he said.
