Araqchi Says Iran May Leave JCPOA in Coming Weeks

“I cannot say that the prospect of the continuation of negotiations with Europe is clear and can lead us to achieve a joint package for saving the JCPOA,” Araqchi was quoted as saying by the Persian-language website of euronews.

Iran’s patience has come to an end and it is probable that Iran will withdraw from the JCPOA in the coming weeks, he noted.

Tehran was negotiating with the other signatories “to see if they can provide us with a package which can give Iran the benefits of sanctions lifting”, the diplomat said.

“The next step is to find guarantees for that package,” he said, adding that Iran needed specifics on how that would happen by the end of May.

“I told the conference today that the JCPOA is in the intensive care unit because it has lost its balance as a result of US withdrawal from the deal,” Araqchi said, referring to a meeting between the remaining signatories of the JCPOA in Vienna on Thursday.

On May 8, the US president pulled his country out of the JCPOA, which was achieved in Vienna in 2015 after years of negotiations among Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

Following the US exit, Iran and the remaining parties launched talks to save the accord.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei has underlined that any decision to keep the JCPOA running without the US should be conditional on “practical guarantees” from the Europeans.

Iran Hails OPEC’s Decision to Stick to 2016 Agreement

Speaking to reporters in Vienna on Friday, Zanganeh said OPEC decided to stick to its earlier agreement reached back in November 2016 on oil production.

“As I said earlier, OPEC just decided to preserve its 2016 agreement. Today, we only agreed to return to 100 percent compliance with the 2016 deal,” he was quoted as saying in a report by Shana.

Zanganeh underlined that some OPEC members with oil production lower than the output agreed upon in 2016 can now increase their production.

“Today, we should wait and see how the decision is to be implemented.”

The Iranian minister refused to provide the reporters with official figures on production output of the member states and said “I don’t release the figure because only a few member states are allowed to produce further oil. The main achievement of today’s meeting was that we agreed in our meeting to return to our 100 percent compliance with the 2016 deal.”

He went on to say that the decision was made based on good-faith and constructive talks among the members states – including bilateral talks between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

The Islamic Republic regards as acceptable and reasonable the decision which is set to be implemented as of July 1, he added.

“As I expected, there were some member states which were not interested in making any anti-US statements or underlining the need for depoliticizing the oil market. I reiterated the issue earlier and predicted that certain states won’t say anything about the US policies. I knew that my words won’t be welcomed but I insisted on them before the meeting to have them registered,” he said.

OPEC and Russia decided in 2016 to cut their output to push prices up following a crash due to a global crude production glut.

Saudi Arabia has been pushing for a hike in oil output. The move put in jeopardy the fate of an 18-month-old supply-cut deal between OPEC members and allied countries credited with clearing a global oil glut and lifting crude prices. Many view the Saudi push as a bid to appease the US which is on course to re-impose sanctions on Tehran.

Since 2017, an OPEC agreement on production cuts has allowed oil prices to rise but there are fears that renewed American sanctions on Iran and a fall in output in crisis-hit Venezuela could disrupt supply.

US President Donald Trump has in recent days called for an increase in the OPEC output and a decrease in prices.

Iran Ready to Launch Joint Iranian-Syrian Bank

In a Thursday meeting with Syrian Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade Mohammad Samer al-Khalil in Tehran, Seif said “given the positive atmosphere in the wake of the Syrian government’s victories, hopefully the two countries’ banking relations will be further developed to rebuild Syria.”

Referring to the records of the talks on the establishment of a joint Iranian-Syrian bank, entitled “Alaman”, Seif noted that the process had stopped due to the conditions in Syria.

“This can be re-negotiated, and using previous studies we can quickly finalise the process and decide on this,” Asr-e Iran news website quoted Seif as saying.

“To have strong political relations, we must expand economic and banking relations. Accordingly, Iran welcomes the expansion of banking relations with the Syrian government.”

For his part, the Syrian Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade expressed satisfaction with the two countries’ banking and economic cooperation, stressing that the situation in Iran and Syria is similar in terms of cruel sanctions imposed by the world powers.

“The Syrian government has always carefully monitored Iran’s countermeasures against foreign economic threats and uses Iran’s experience to face sanctions,” underlined Samer al-Khalil.

Al-Khalil further touched upon the interest of economic officials and the Central Bank of Syria to expand bilateral banking relations with Iran.

He said at the recent meeting of the Syrian economic team, discussions were held on ways to cooperate more with Iranian banks, and as a first step a joint bank could be launched.

Al-Khalil also officially invited the Governor of the Central Bank of Iran to visit Syria to hold talks with Syrian officials.

“Collapse of Iran Deal to Do Irreparable Damage to World Community”

Salehi who was visiting Norway to attend the Oslo Forum made the remarks in his meeting with Norwegian Foreign Minister Ine Marie Eriksen Søreide in the European capital.

The Iranian official criticized the hasty decision by some European firms to leave Iran in the wake of the US unilateral withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal for fear of the US sanctions.

He said the US policies are doomed to failure and the possible collapse of the JCPOA will do an irreparable damage to the international community, a report by Fars News Agency said.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the head of the AEOI said Iran’s top leadership attaches significant respect to the dignity of the Iranian nation in its foreign policy and said remaining faithful to one’s international commitments is possible only within a bilateral mechanism.

He also underlined the importance of adopting confidence-building measures in bilateral relations and said this requires the commitment of all involved parties to fulfilling their pledges on time and completely.

He expressed hope that the European sides of the deal would come to realize the sensitivity of the current situation and fulfil their pledges within the expected timeframe.

The Iranian official then thanked Norway for its support for the Iran nuclear deal and efforts to further enhance the current bilateral relations between the two countries and underlined that the Europeans should offer their political and economic support for the Iranian nation so that they can enjoy their rights under the multinational deal.

For her part, the Norwegian foreign minister elaborated on her country’s stance towards the Iran nuclear deal in the wake of the US pullout of the multi-national deal and said in line with the EU, Norway strongly calls and will do its utmost for preserving the JCPOA and providing Iran with its legal rights under the deal.

Søreide also said her country’s support for the JCPOA is very serious and added the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal will have dire consequences for the stability and security of the Middle East region as well as the future of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

She said the US move will also tarnish the image of the International Atomic Energy Organization (IAEA).

The IAEA has announced in at least 11 reports that unlike what the US claims, the Islamic Republic has remained completely faithful to its pledges under the JCPOA.

The Norwegian foreign minister finally expressed hope that the JCPOA, if preserved, would pave the way for resolving all regional disputes.

Iranian Designer Talks of Her Collaboration with FIFA World Cup Google Doodle

Kheiriyeh was born in 1979 in Iran’s southern city of Khorramshahr in Khuzestan province. She was just 9 months when the war between Iran and Iraq forced her family to move to Tehran.

She started painting at the age of 16 when she enrolled at high school to study graphics, and is still a painter now that she is teaching at the University of Maryland.

In Iran, in addition to designing the famous animation characters of Shekarestan (a popular animation series in Iran), she has created many illustrations and received numerous international and domestic awards. But her name was heard after her collaboration with Google for FIFA 2018 World Cup.

Rashin graduated from the Al-Zahra University in Tehran with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in graphics, and moved to the United States in 2011 to take a 6-month course of painting and hand-printing at the New York University Institute of Fine Arts.

In an Interview with Jame’e No, she has talked about her career. “I’ve been drawing illustrations for books for 20 years. About 30 books of mine have been published in Iran. I have published the same number of books through international publications.”

“After my immigration, I have published 10 more. I have collaborated with numerous publishers in France, Italy, Japan, Korea, China, India, Brazil, Germany, Switzerland, etc. My first book after immigration was Two Parrots (a personal recount of the story of Rumi’s The Merchant and the Parrot). I wrote the story and did the illustrations.”

“I also drew the illustrations of the book Ramadan, published by famous Simon & Schuster Publications. The most recent book of mine is Saffron Ice Cream which was published by the publisher of Harry Potter series, Scholastic Co.”

Rashin Kheiriyeh is one of the 32 graphic designers that Google has received help from in designing the doodles of the national football teams attending the FIFA World Cup. These designs were unveiled last week with the start of the World Cup in Russia, and afterwards Rashin’s name was heard very much in the social media, especially among Persian speakers.

Deformed characters and exaggerated figures are a hallmark of Rashin’s designs that could also be seen in her work for Google.

“The deformity of the human and animal figure makes the work comic. My audiences are mostly children. I like children to laugh and rejoice by seeing my designs in story books. The simpler the layout, the more it remains in the minds of the children,” she noted.

Cooperation with Google

On her collaboration with Google she says, “A few months ago, I received an email from Google asking for cooperation for the World Cup. They said they should first sign a confidentiality contract. Then, they contacted me and said they wanted to work with 32 graphic artists and illustrators from 32 countries to design special logos for the teams at the FIFA 2018 World Cup. In their emails, they explained that we should show a combination of football and the culture of each country. They did not want the designs to be very traditional. I created a lot of draft designs and tried to use Islamic designs and flowers and birds that are well-known Iranian symbols. I also used Iranian symbols on the shirts of the characters and on the ball. I designed the football field in a village with cozy homes where women and children were cheering. I also added a Persian cat, which is my signature in my works.”

In response to a question about  women’s presence in her works she replied, “Basically, as I wanted to show Iranian women and their interest in football, I had to remove the stadium. Because women in Iran are not allowed to go to the stadiums. If I had shown them in the stadium, it would have been a bigger mistake. And if there was a stadium without women, it was not logical. As a result, I took the football field to an Iranian village so that women could be shown in it. Except for the players who should be male, the number of spectators is equal in terms of gender.”

Rashin believes that as her illustrations for the children’s books were well received at the international level and appreciated by the critics of the children’s books, Google has selected her. “They were looking for some artists who could showcase their traditional and modern culture,” she underlined.

“In fact, I am the only graphic artist that designed the logo using a paintbrush. The others had designed it digitally. I think that’s why they selected my work to be shown on their Instagram page.”

This Iranian artists further mentioned that her colleagues at Google welcomed the project and said if the Iranian national team can advance to the next stage, Google would ask her to submit a new design.

“I really hope to see Team Melli in the next stage. That’s because of the Iranian people and especially my dad. My dad is watching football every day. His craze for football is unbelievable. I dedicate this painting to my father.”

Iranians Think Europe, US Playing Good Cop/ Bad Cop: Araqchi

In an address to the second Iran-Europe Cooperation Conference in Brussels on Thursday, Araqchi urged the European sides of the JCPOA to make further efforts to gain the confidence of the Iranian nation.

“Iranians say the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal is part of a good cop/bad cop game played with Iran by the US and the EU (with Trump playing the bad cop),” he was quoted as saying by IRNA.

With the theme of New Horizon, the two-day conference which began on Thursday is mainly focused on exploring ways to counter the Iranophobia project after the US unilateral withdrawal from the nuclear deal back in May.

The participants of the conference also discuss bilateral cooperation in the areas of technology, energy, national resources and so on.

The first Iran-Europe cooperation conference was held in Vienna in 2015.

The conference provides the two sides with a chance to bring together high-level decision-making leaders and business executives from Iran and Europe to exchange views on various issues.

Araqchi and Iran’s Vice-President for Science and Technology Sorena Sattari are two keynote speakers from Iran in the conference. They are also set to hold talks with officials in Belgium and European Union.

The US decision to unilaterally pull out of the Iran nuclear deal has sparked harsh reactions from the remaining sides of the deal. Tehran has called on the European sides of the deal to guarantee that Iran can reap the full benefits of the deal or the country will leave the JCPOA soon.

Iran against Boost in OPEC Crude Oil Output: Minister

“At this juncture, we are against an increase in production, as there is no imbalance in the market,” Fars News Agency quoted Bijan Zanganeh as saying on Thursday in Vienna, where he is supposed to attend the 7th International Seminar of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.

The meeting will be held Friday and Saturday, when OPEC oil ministers are expected to discuss relaxing production cuts, first agreed nearly two years ago amid a global supply glut.

The alliance is facing pressure from outside to decease oil prices. Worried about the impact of gasoline prices on US mid-term Congress elections, the US administration is lobbying hard for a surge in production.

President Donald Trump has personally criticized the OPEC on his Twitter account, calling on the organization not to allow an increase in oil prices.

Referring to Trump’s calls, Zanganeh said it is the US who is to blame for the increase, not OPEC.

The minister said the recent increase in global oil prices results from political tensions, particularly those that erupted in the wake of a decision by Trump to walk out of the 2015 nuclear deal.

“OPEC is an international organization involving 14 members and does not take orders,” Zanganeh said, adding that the organization ought not to talk about an output increase in this meeting.

The US pulled out of the 2015 nuclear pact early March, pledging to impose “the highest level” of economic bans on the Islamic Republic.

The return of US sanctions could prompt international oil firms working with Iran to get out of the country, hurting the development of Iran’s oil and gas fields.

Notably, French energy giant Total has pulled out of Iran following the US decision.

17 Iranian Sailors Held by Somalia Return Home

In a Thursday statement, Qassemi said the Iranian sailors were released thanks to the hard efforts and arrangements made by the Iranian Foreign Ministry over the past months.

According to Qassemi, the sailors were on a fishing boat when they were arrested by Somalia forces for illegally trespassing into the African country’s water last year. Each of them was sentenced to two years in jail and paying a fine by a local court in Somalia.

“The sailors were flown to the Islamic Republic after being transported to Nairobi and delivered to Iran’s embassy in Kenya,” he said.

Qassemi said upon their arrival at Imam Khomeini International Airport in Tehran, the Iranian sailors were warmly welcomed by Hossein Panahi-Azar, the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, as well as a number of other officials.

Their release came about two weeks after four Iranian fishermen taken captive by pirates in international waters near Somalia were released by Iran’s intelligence forces. Iranian intelligence agents secured the fishermen’s release through a long process and despite tight security controls by the pirates.

The fishermen were all Sunni Muslims from the southeastern Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchestan. They had been held by pirates since 2015.

All papers today covered a meeting between the Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and members of the Iranian Parliament. The Leader’s call on the Parliament to pass domestic laws against money laundering and terrorism, instead of approving the country’s accession to FATF or CFT, made the headlines today.

The top story, however, was the brilliant performance of the Iranian national football team, which lost its second FIFA World Cup match against Spain 1-0. Several papers also highlighted the historic presence of women at Tehran’s Azadi Stadium who watched Iran-Spain match along with fellow male fans.

The US withdrawal from the UN Human Rights Council in support of the Israeli regime also received great coverage today.
