Iran, India Discuss Ways to Expand Economic Ties

During the talks held on the sidelines of the 73th Session of the UN General Assembly, the Indian external affairs minister highlighted the significance of economic ties with Tehran, and said her country views Iran not only as a good neighbour but also a good friend.

She also underlined that India will continue to buy oil from Iran despite US sanctions.

The two top diplomats also discussed ways to promote banking cooperation.

They also exchanged views on the development of Iran’s Chabahar Port as well as the two countries’ mutual and multilateral cooperation based on the port’s trade capacity.

Earlier, Zarif said in an interview that Iran expects Chabahar Port to become even larger with more capacity.

“We hope India and other investors would come to Chabahar and make investment for the expansion of the port facilities,” he told ANI.

The Chabahar port complex is expected to be developed as part of a new transportation corridor for land-locked Afghanistan. India and Iran signed an agreement worth $85 million to develop the port in south-eastern Iran.

Essay Writing Problems Young Adults from Iran Face Dealing with English Papers

Writing

To write such flawless essays, writers need to develop analytic and evaluation skills for the active defense of their position.

The problem comes in because English in Iran is taught as a foreign language. The curriculum for teaching the language is prepared in a basic manner with no focus on grammar rules, reading comprehension, translation, and vocabulary knowledge. There’s little attention paid to students’ speaking, listening, and mainly writing in actuality.

Importance of English for Persian Speakers

The English language is considered the International language by many people. Acquisition of the knowledge of English can guarantee better employment opportunities, higher education, and even a better life. The English language came into the Iranian curriculum for a variety of reasons.

These include:

  • Access to technological and scientific resources. Most of the technical and scientific publications are in English, and this calls for a high mastery of the language proficiency.
  • The information explosion and the digital Internet era make the understanding of English a necessity.
  • When it comes to cultural exchange among nations, the most common language used to facilitate these cultural exchanges is English. The mastery of the language is thus indispensable to satisfy the communicative needs.

Challenges Iranian Students Face When Learning English

When Iranian students delve into the study of the English language, they are likely to face some challenges starting from the entirely different writing system of the two dialects. These writing systems have different grammar rules, and thus a mix of the two boils down to confusion on the students’ part.

Let’s have a look at the common problems faced by the students in detail.

1- Difference in Alphabet

Well, Iranian students are accustomed to writing from right to left. When it comes to writing academic essays in English, it appears backward to them. On top of that, the Persian language has no uppercase and lowercase letters. Punctuation is also a problem with the students. Although they are taught punctuation in the schools, it is given little attention in the written language. When it comes to the use of punctuation, some places where the English language calls for a full-stop, the Persian language uses a coma.

It’s, therefore, very common to find the Iranian students mixing capital letters with small ones and providing minimal punctuation in their sentences.

2- Different Grammar

The grammar rules governing the two languages are different, thus, it is confusing for Iranian students.

Persian speakers often struggle with the present perfect tense and the verb “to be.” For instance, the verb “to be” is not as frequently used in Arabic as in English. This often leads to grammar errors such as ‘He there’, ‘He sad,’ ‘He coming’ etc.

The present perfect tense is also a well of confusion as the speakers tend to use the incorrect word order for nouns and adjectives. An example is, “I have seen him yesterday.”

3- Difference in Pronunciation

There’s a big difference in pronunciation between the Persian speakers and the English ones. For instance, ‘b’ is usually pronounced as ‘p’ and ‘Th’ is normally pronounced as ‘s’ or ‘z’. In the Persian language, the silent letters aren’t silent. For instance when pronouncing ‘Island’, the ‘s’ is not silent as there are no silent letters in the language.

Another difficulty Iranian students face is in the case of two consonant sounds in succession without a vowel sound in between. The students tend to add a small vowel sound before; for instance, ‘sEpoon’ instead of ‘spoon’.

4- The Difference in Expectations When Learning

Most of the Iranian students do not have the experience of a communicative learning environment. They may expect the teacher to devote a lot of time correcting their mistakes and may be reluctant to work in groups. The fear of working in groups is because they fear to pick up on others’ mistakes.

5- Cultural Differences

The classroom is a mix of people from various cultures, and this cultural explosion sometimes acts as an education barrier. In some places, in Iran for instance, it may be inappropriate for males and females to attend classes together. In other places, they may attend classes together but sit separately. In some places, however, they sit together and work boisterously in the desire to achieve a common goal.

6- Unfavorable Learning Environment

In other words, there’s no active role the English language plays outside the class, hence, the students don’t feel the immediate need to be well versed in the literature. Very few of the learners and teachers in Iran have contact with native English speakers. Another hurdle is that the Iranian people aren’t allowed to access satellite TV as a source of learning material as the TV programmes in the Western world are considered debasing to morality. Indian students compared to Iranian students were found to be much more conversant with the English language due to the easy access of audio-visuals.

Another challenge is when the students consider the English language as a set of separable skills and grammar rules to be memorized instead of an integration of skills and sub-skills.

One of the most significant problems in Iran concerning English is that the students still can’t express themselves after years of study in junior and high school. Knowing about the students’ problems is one thing and acting on them is another. Fostering communicative activities improve the written language.

The syllabuses should be aligned to meet all the requirements and needs of the students.

US Government Becoming More Isolated Everyday: Iran

Bahram Qassemi

In response to a report published at the summit regarding Iran’s measures and activities, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said the world and all independent states today are determined to show their will to respect international agreements, international law, and the responsibility of governments by implementing the nuclear accord.

In a statement on Wednesday, Qassemi said that the Islamic Republic of Iran, as a committed country on this path, has accompanied other states based on its routine policy despite the unfaithfulness of the evil-minded parties that have not fulfilled their international obligations so far.

“Relying on wisdom, logic and its civilized behaviour and policies, Tehran cooperated with them to safeguard its legitimate interests in the nuclear deal,” noted Qassemi.

He further mentioned that today, it is the US government which is becoming more and more isolated as a result of its bullying behaviours against other countries.

“The positions expressed by various countries at the United Nations General Assembly and even at the recent UN Security Council meeting showed that the US government is more than ever indifferent to the nations of the world.”

The Iranian official further noted that there is a fact in what the US Secretary of State said in his report. “That is the disappointment of US officials in realisation of their dream of isolating Iran in the global arena in recent months; the dreams that were inculcated in the US officials by the claims of some terrorist groups and anti-Iran centres.”

Qassemi also emphasised that there was nothing new in the allegations raised in the statements of the US Secretary of State against the Islamic Republic of Iran.

It was exactly the same things the United States has always been saying over the past 40 years with different word choices, he underlined.

“The important point that makes the Iranians proud of the Islamic Republic is that despite all these hostilities and conspiracies Iran has become more powerful and stable than before. It uses its full potential and resources to maintain the interests of the country and the Iranian nation.”

“The Islamic Republic would never let its authority and defence capabilities be overshadowed by the hostilities of countries like the United States. Tehran is sure that it will pass these tests successfully as well,” he added.

Not long after the rest of the world had openly laughed at his boss as he addressed the United Nations General Assembly, Pompeo spoke at the 2018 United Against Nuclear Iran summit in New York City saying that “the Iranian regime’s track record over the past 40 years has revealed that it is among the worst violators of the UN Charter and UN Security Council Resolutions, perhaps indeed the worst violator.”

Pompeo said in his report that he is “deeply disappointed” that the remaining countries of the nuclear deal plan to set up a special payments system with Iran to bypass US sanctions.

Though most world powers and the UN itself have affirmed Iran’s commitment to the 2015 nuclear accord, Trump left the deal in May, and his administration is struggling to gain international support for strict economic measures not supported by even traditional US allies in Europe.

Trump Faces Strong Opposition on Iran at UNSC Meeting

The UN Security Council meeting on the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction was held Wednesday, one day after trump attacked Iran at his General Assembly speech.

During the Wednesday session of the UNSC, Trump renewed old allegations against Iran and reiterated his harsh criticism of Iran.

“I ask all members of the Security Council to work with the United States to ensure the Iranian regime changes its behavior and never acquires a nuclear bomb,” he said.

“The Iranian regime exports violence, terror and turmoil,” he said, accusing Tehran of procuring materials to advance its ballistic missile programme.

“A regime with this track record must never be allowed to possess a nuclear weapon,” Trump said, as he justified his decision to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal, and to reimpose economic sanctions.

Trump also accused Iran and Russia of “enabling” “butchery” in Syria.

However he also thanked all three countries for pulling back from an offensive against militants in Idlib.

After Trump, French President Emanuel Macron said that a “serious crisis of confidence” has emerged after US President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal.

In his message before the UN Security Council, Macron said that while the 2015 deal is “imperfect”, it ensures that Iran would not be able to obtain nuclear weapons.

He added that since the deal was signed, the “pathways of the signatories of the JCPOA have diverged…but we still, all of us here, retain the same objective of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, and guaranteeing strict international control on the peaceful use of their nuclear programme”.

Bolivian leader Evo Morales launched a blistering critique of US policy toward Iran as well as Trump’s immigration policies that resulted in the separation of migrant children from their parents.

Bolivian President Evo Morales went further, linking Trump’s actions to a broader US history of intervention in countries such as Iran.

“In 1953, the United States financed, planned and implemented a coup d’etat against a democratically-elected government,” he said, referring to Iran. “After that, for many decades the United States supported an authoritarian government that allowed the profits from oil companies to line the pockets of transnational countries.”

“This situation endured until the revolution of 1979,” Morales added. “And now that Iran has retaken control of its own resources, it is once again the victim of a US siege.”

The session came a day after Trump anti-Iran remarks at General Assembly meeting. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani responded to Trump’s anti-Iran remarks, saying the US administration is violating the rules of international law by withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal that Iran reached with six world powers, including the US.

He also emphasized that the US is pushing other countries to violate the Iran deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and that it is threatening all countries and international organizations with punishment if they comply with Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed the JCPOA.

Iran Calls for Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons across World

In an address to a meeting in New York held to mark the International Day of the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, Zarif referred to the rivalry underway in the world to gain further new nuclear weapons and modernize such weapons and called for an end to the dangerous competition.

The Iranian top diplomat also stressed the need for total elimination of the inhumane weapons in the world.

He also called for global adherence to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), unconditional implementation of denuclearization commitments and creation of a world free from nuclear weapons.

“This is the right of the future generations to see these goals have been achieved by their ancestors and we should responsibly work to achieve them,” he concluded.

The International Day of the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons is held annually on September 26 by the United Nations to call for all states to get rid of nuclear weapons.

Some reports say at least 17,000 nuclear weapons are in the world today and over half of the world’s population live in countries that have nuclear weapons or are members of nuclear alliances.

Iran to Arrange Meeting with Argentina to Investigate AMIA Case

In a Wednesday statement, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi described Mauricio Macri’s comments as distortion of reality and said the Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns any act of terrorism wherever in the world and in any form it takes place.

“To this end, Iran has repeatedly condemned the attack on the Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina (AMIA) building and expressed its sympathy with the families of the victims of the explosion,” he noted.

To prove its good-faith in [helping the Argentine officials] unveiling the truth and dispensing the true justice in connection with AMIA explosion, Qassemi said, the Islamic Republic of Iran accepted an invitation by the Argentine president through the UN podium back in 2012 and the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding in January 2013 on the issue.

“However, the Argentine government is not prepared to implement the MoU it signed with Iran,” he added.

Qassemi stressed that the Islamic Republic of Iran is still prepared to establish constructive cooperation with Argentine officials on AMIA.

“To this end, Iran has set forth a new initiative to hold a meeting between the judiciary officials of two sides,” he concluded.

The statement comes in reaction to the Argentine president’s comments who in his address to the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly called on Iran to hold cooperation with Argentine’s judiciary centers in putting on trial those behind the AMIA bombing and another attack in the capital Buenos Aires which left over a hundred dead and many others injured back in 1992 and 1994.

Iran Calls for EU’s Practical Measures to Safeguard JCPOA

He made the remarks during a meeting with Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York.

During the talks, President Rouhani said Iran-Belgium relations are developing in a good direction and added the Iran nuclear deal can play a key role in strengthening mutual ties between the two sides.

Rouhani underlined that safeguarding the nuclear deal is a heavy joint responsibility on the shoulder of the signatories of the JCPOA and said the EU is now facing a sensitive test not only before Iran but also the whole world and everyone is waiting to see whether or not the Europeans will remain committed to their pledges under the deal.

Elsewhere in his remark, the Iranian president said that the US cannot achieve its goal by exerting pressure on the Islamic Republic and said preserving the JCPOA is an international responsibility and all states should play their role in the issue.

“As a key political and economic player in the world, the EU’s role in safeguarding the JCPOA is highly critical,” he noted.

The president then said Iran has remained faithful to all its commitments under the nuclear deal and the issue has been confirmed in several reports by the International Atomic Energy Organization.

“The Europeans’ political stance towards the JCPOA seems good but the Islamic Republic of Iran expects the bloc to take some practical measures to safeguard the deal,” he said.

For his part, the Belgian politician expressed his country’s strong resolve to strengthen its ties with Iran and said Belgium is after multilateralism and hopes all articles of the JCPOA is fully implemented.

He went on to say that despite the political and economic pressure by the US, the EU seeks to establish a new financial mechanism to strengthen its economic and trade ties with Iran.

Norway to Expand Ties with Iran despite US Pressure

The Iranian president also held talks with Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg. During the meeting, the Norwegian official expressed her country’s preparedness to expand ties with Iran and expressed hope that all states could use the JCPOA as base for further expansion of ties.

She expressed regret that the US violated the nuclear deal to meet its political goals.

“We are happy that Iran has remained faithful to its commitments under the nuclear deal,” she said, adding the EU is after measures to expand its ties with Iran despite the US pressure.

Rouhani, in turn, said the Islamic Republic of Iran will only remain in deals that meet its demands.

He once again slammed the US for its unilateral withdrawal from the nuclear deal and said the current problem created by the US is not restricted to the conflict between Tehran and Washington because the latter has already violated a multi-national treaty approved unanimously by the United Nations Security Council.

“The Resolution 2231 requires all states to safeguard the JCPOA. So, it is highly important for the whole world not to remain indifferent towards its violation,” he said.

President Rouhani once again underlined the EU’s role in safeguarding the JCPOA as a source of global peace and security.

He then referred to the devastating situation of people in Yemen and said the aggressors cannot fulfill their targets through airstrikes on the impoverished nation.

Rouhani also touched on the Syria’s crisis and elaborated on the cooperation among Iran, Turkey and Syria to press ahead with projects to restore peace to Syria.

“Our forces are closely monitoring the ceasefire between Syrian forces and the terrorist groups in the war-torn country. We made good decisions during our earlier meeting in Tehran to stop bloodshed in Syria’s Idlib province,” he said.

Rouhani, Macron Call for Joint Fight against Terror

In a Tuesday meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York, the two presidents exchanged views on bilateral interests and various regional and international issues.

The two presidents called for further mutual efforts to expand their ties in various trade, economic, financial exchanges and energy areas.

They stressed that there is no obstacle on the way of strengthening the two sides’ relations. The two presidents called for further efforts by Iranian and French officials to expand mutual ties, a report by the Iranian president’s website said.

Rouhani described the US unilateral pullout from the multinational deal between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries as illegal and a violation of the international law and highlighted the world community’s endeavour to preserve the nuclear deal following the US withdrawal.

He also expressed gratitude to the French nation and government for their sympathy with the Iranians over the recent terrorist attack on a military parade in southwestern city of Ahvaz and said terrorism is a great threat against the world community.

Rouhani then highlighted the importance of mutual cooperation in launching an all-out fight against terrorism in the region and the world.

For his part, the French president offered condolences over the death of 25 Iranians in Ahvaz terrorist attack.

He also stressed the importance of preserving the Iran nuclear deal following the US withdrawal and said France withholds no efforts to achieve the goal.

The French president also said France attaches importance to its relations with Iran as an influential regional state and its role in fight against terrorism.

He also noted that Iran and France should expand their cooperation in fight against terror and unilateralism in the world.
