Iran Says OPEC Agreement Deals Further Blow to US

OPEC Fund Earmarks $500,000 to Help Iran Fight COVID-19

In an address to a cabinet session on Sunday, Rouhani said the US once failed to press ahead with its meddlesome policies in the world after leading oil exporters reached consensus on creating a new balance in oil supply in the world.

“Despite its efforts, the US once again failed to press ahead with its meddlesome policies due to the resistance of the OPEC member states and their allies as well as the leading role played by Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh to make coordination among them, ” he added.

He made the remarks after Zanganeh briefed the cabinet ministers on the latest decision made during Friday meeting of the OPEC in Vienna.

OPEC finally managed to break an impasse over production cuts and agreed on a larger-than-expected cut with allies after two days of hard negotiations.

Despite the US pressures, the member states and their allies reached consensus on removing 1.2 million barrels a day from the market, with OPEC itself shouldering 800,000 barrels of the burden.

Iran emerged as a winner from the contentious talks, saying it’s secured an exemption from cuts as it suffers the effects of US sanctions.

Iran to Hold Handicrafts Exhibition in Iraq

The exhibition, to be attended by artists from various provinces is aimed at promoting Iranian arts and crafts in Iraq’s northern city of Soleymaniyeh.

The exhibition, organized by the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Department of Iran’s Kurdistan province, will be held from December 26 to January 5, according to a report by Mehr News Agency.

The exhibition is expected to put on display various Iranian handicrafts like carpet, rug, chess, pottery, local cloth, silversmith, traditional jewelry, knife and souvenirs from Yazd, Isfahan, Hamadan, Oroumiyeh, Shiraz, Kermanshah, Qom, Khorasan, Tabriz and many other cities and provinces.

Iran has already held several exhibitions in Iraq as part of plans to expand mutual ties in economic and trade.  The two sides agreed in February to set up a permanent exhibition in Iraq showcasing Iranian products.

‘90% of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgeries in Iran Successful’

Dr Farnad Imani, a disabled war veteran, has pushed up Iran’s ranking to the first place in the Middle East and the sixth spot in the world when it comes to the treatment of spinal cord injuries through minimally invasive surgeries.

Subspecialist Imani, 46, became 70% disabled during the eight-year war imposed by Iraq on Iran back in 1982 when he sustained injuries to his head and face.

He was only 14 years old at the time. He has undergone cosmetic surgeries for 17 times so far. Half of his face is prosthetic. His right eye is prosthetic and his left eye has been hit with shrapnel. Still, he remains so determined.

Dr Imani has devised a method to perform operations on patients’ spines without any need for anaesthesia or open surgery. In the past, it would be difficult to perform such surgeries, especially on old patients. Generally speaking, such operations would require between 3 to 5 hours as general anaesthesia needed to be administered and rather large incisions needed to be made. The patient needed to remain in hospital for around 3 to 4 days, and required absolute rest for more than one and a half months together with physiotherapy treatment.

However, in the non-invasive method, the patient is discharged from hospital after a few hours and bounces back after one week. Even during the operation, the patient is able to talk consciously and does not feel any pain.

Dr Imani recently performed an operation on the neck and spinal cord of a European official’s baby.

In the method he has devised, says Dr Imani, the extent of damage to tissues is much less, and the chances of success are much higher. The time that patients need to remain in hospital following the operation has reduced tremendously, and the complications during and after the surgery have reduced as well.

The operation used to cost between IRR 50 and 200 million, but it has dropped by 70 percent in the new method.

Iran Says Supports UN’s Mission to Resolve Yemen Crisis

bahram

Qassemi made the remarks in response to ISNA’s question about the claims made by some foreign media that Iran has offered to send a delegation to participate in the Yemeni negotiations in Stockholm.

“The Stockholm consultations are of a Yemeni-Yemeni nature. Since the beginning of the Yemen crisis, the Islamic Republic of Iran has stressed the need for intra-Yemeni talks free from any foreign intervention,” he said, stressing that Iran’s call for talks among Yemenis was particularly mentioned in the third part of the Iranian foreign minister’s four-point plan to end the crisis.

“Tehran has consistently expressed its full support for the UN’s mission to find an appropriate political solution as the only way to resolve the crisis,” Qassemi noted.

“Iran adopted and maintained the stance at a time when the United States gave the green light for the launch of a devastating and inhumane war on the Yemeni people by adopting a politically ambitious, completely biased, destructive and unbalanced policy,” he said.

“Washington, by offering various types of financial, arms and political support for the aggressors, has backed the continuation of one of the biggest humanitarian catastrophes, as acknowledged by international organisations,” he added.

“Iran hopes that the Yemeni parties, by adopting an independent and peaceful approach within the framework of national and Yemeni-Yemeni talks, will prevent rapacious and warmongering foreigners from interfering in and obstructing the negotiations in a bid to end the plight and sufferings of the oppressed Yemeni people,” he added.

Peace talks between the Yemeni government and Houthi fighters, coordinated by the UN, opened in Sweden on Thursday.

At these talks, UN Special Envoy Martin Griffiths expressed hope that serious progress towards peace can be made and that solutions can be found to specific problems that can reduce the suffering.

The talks held in Stockholm are expected to last for about a week, depending on the progress of consultations, according to Hanan Eldawadi, the chief public information officer at the UN Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen.

Over 1,700 Yellow Vest Protesters Arrested in France

Interior Ministry said a total of 1,723 protesters were arrested across France during the latest round of the protests in which demonstrators clashed with riot police.

The so-called Yellow Vest protests turned violent again on Saturday with police using tear gas and water cannon to disperse angry protesters in Paris and several other cities.

Police in Paris said 1,082 arrests were made on Saturday, up sharply from 412 in the previous round earlier this week in the city.

According to the interior ministry, about 136,000 people took part in Saturday’s protests, almost the same as the number of those who attended December 1 rallies. Clashes broke out in several cities, including Marseille, Bordeaux, Lyon and Toulouse. In Paris, demonstrators set fire to cars, burned barricades and smashed windows in pockets of violence.

As the authorities say, the protesters caused “much more damage” on Saturday compared with December 1 nationwide rallies.

During the rallies, protesters called on President Macron to resign. He is now expected to address the nation in the coming days.

On Sunday, French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe called for new dialogue with representatives of the yellow vest movement. He promised that the government will address concerns over rising living costs. He said the police managed to bring the situation under control. The authorities had previously warned that there would be zero tolerance towards violence.

Earlier this week, the French government canceled a planned rise in taxes on petrol and diesel in a bid to defuse the situation; however protests appear to have transformed into a broader anti-Macron rebellion.

India to Remain in Chabahar despite Suicide Attack: Iran

Asked about the impact of Chabahar terrorist attack on foreign investors, a deputy head of Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization said infrastructural projects are at full throttle despite the incident, and there is no security concern.

“The terrorist blast was nothing more than playing with firecrackers outside the police headquarters in Chabahar, and had no direct link to Shahid Beheshti port,” Hadi Haqshenas said.

According to the official, the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan has been the scene of similar terrorist attacks in the past. “This is not the first time that such an attack is carried out in the province. Over the past year, the province was targeted by armed groups but the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) foiled them.”

The Iranian official said a number of projects were inaugurated by top officials on Thursday in Chabahar, and the terrorist attack could not influence the inaugurations.

“Our main project was to inaugurate the first phase of Shahid Beheshti port in a ceremony attended by Iranian and Afghan presidents as well as the Indian prime minister. No incident happened during the ceremony and everyone witnessed the high security provided by the Iranian forces,” he noted.

The official once again downplayed the attack saying it inflicts no damage neither on the Chabahar port’s development nor its future and infrastructural projects because the project will keep going as fast as possible.

The Thursday suicide car blast killed a conscript and an officer, and wounded over 40 others including eight women and five children.

Chabahar in the south-eastern coasts of Iran is easily accessible from India’s western coast, and is being developed by Indian investors as a promising rival for Pakistan’s Gwadar.

Majid Majidi Wins Kerala Festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award

Majidi, who presides over the jury of the official competition of this year’s Kerala Festival, received his award on December 7.

In his films, Majidi has touched on many themes and genres and has won numerous international awards.

During his 25-year activity in filmmaking he made films such as Children of Heaven (1997), The Colour of Paradise (1999) and The Song of Sparrows (2008) which all won global acclaim.

The Children of Heaven was nominated to receive the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1998. Though it lost to the Italian film Life Is Beautiful by Roberto Benigni, Children of Heaven is the first Iranian film to have been nominated by the Academy.

The 23rd International Film Festival of Kerala was inaugurated on December 7 and will conclude on December 13.

At the opening ceremony, Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi’s latest work, Everybody Knows, was also screened.

The seven-day festival will feature 190 films from 65 countries.

The theme of the festival this year is “The Human Spirit: Films on Hope and Rebuilding”.  Six films will be screened under this particular category.

Iran Finally Appoints New Ambassador to China

According to Qassemi, Keshavarz Zadeh will head to Beijing within the coming days.

Keshavarz Zadeh is currently an assistant to Iranian foreign minister and also the Director General for the Americas at the foreign ministry. He has previously served as the Iranian ambassador to Venezuela and Uzbekistan.

Back in June, the foreign ministry introduced Abdolnasser Hemmati as the country’s new ambassador to Beijing, but the Iranian president later decided to pick him as the new governor of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) amid a serious economic crisis in the country.

After Hemmati, the foreign ministry’s delay in sending a new ambassador to China turned into a controversy in Iran, where some lawmakers criticised the ministry for failing to introduce the new envoy, especially given the significant role China plays in Iran’s foreign policy and international business.

They argued that the foreign ministry must think of introducing the next ambassador before the term of the incumbent envoy ends, especially in countries that are of great economic importance to Tehran.
