Iran about to Unveil Homegrown Type of Nuclear Fuel Rod

Speaking to IRIB News on Sunday, Ali Akbar Salehi said the new type of fuel, which will be unveiled soon, would boost productivity of the reactor.

“We have made such a great progress in the nuclear science that we can develop new types of fuel, instead of reverse engineering and using the design of others,” he said.

Salehi said the design of the new type of nuclear fuel was a major challenge in developing reactors, which means Iran has overcome technical hurdles and is now closer to building its own reactors.

The TRR is a light-water reactor developed by the US and given to Iran in 1967, along with weapon-grade uranium fuel.

After the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iran was unable to supply the required fuel from abroad, so the reactor was modified to use fuel enriched below 20%, which could be bought from Argentina.

In 2012, Iran announced that for the first time it was loading domestically made rods into the reactor, after foreign producers refused to sell it to Tehran.

Iran’s Parliamentary Delegation in Syria for Talks

The delegation, headed by Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, the chairman of National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, is to meet high-ranking Syrian officials during the trip.

Tehran lent a helping hand to Damascus since the early month of the seven-year conflict in Syria, sending advisors to assist the anti-terror drive in the country.

Iran is currently exploring opportunities to contribute to the economic reconstruction of Syria.

Poland Film Week in Tehran Called Off in Protest at Anti-Iran Meeting

“Iran has warmly hosted various nations and ethnic groups in their hard times, particularly the Polish people,” said Hossein Entezami, the director of the Cinema Organization, referring to Iran’s hosting of Polish refugees during the World War ll.

Poland Film Week in Tehran Called Off in Protest at Anti-Iran Meeting“To protect the dignity of Iran and Iranians, the Polish film week will be postponed until Warsaw shows appropriate behaviour,” he said, referring to a cultural event which used to be held in Iran annually in late January and early February.

Last year, the film week was co-organizer by the cinematheque of Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art and the Poland’s Embassy in Tehran

The US State Department announced Friday that it will host a global conference in Poland on February 13-14 to discuss the Middle East, and Iran in particular.

Poland claims the conference would not target Iran, but Iranian officials believe it is part of the US pressure campaign against the country.

‘Anti-Iran Summit in Poland Shows US Frustration with Previous Plots’

Hemmati

In a post on his Instagram account on Sunday, Abdolnasser Hemmati said the US has started a new round of psychological war against the Iranian nation, pointing to the US bid to hold an anti-Iran meeting in Poland next month and a separate warning Washington would not renew exemptions from anti-Iran oil sanctions.

Hemmati said the latest oil threat comes following futile US efforts to convince countries to cut down to zero their purchase of Iran’s oil, which forced the country to grudgingly issue oil exemptions for eight countries.

The CBI governor said the latest moves are designed to weaken Iran’s currency, and the central bank will do its best to counter them.

Hemmati said Iran has started supplying currency from India, South Korea and China and it has also moved to broaden trade with Turkey, Iraq and other neighbours.

These measures, along with the CBI’s significant currency reserves, will allow it to control the currency market, he said.

Iran’s national currency had plunged in recent months, reaching to a maximum of around 200,000 against each dollar in the free market.

However, the currency market has been stabilized in recent weeks, with the national currency going up to around 100,000 for each dollar. The rate currently stands at 114,000.

The US State Department said in a statement on January 11 that it will host a global conference in Poland on February 13-14 to discuss the Middle East, and Iran in particular.

US State Secretary Mike Pompeo, who is currently on a tour of the Middle East, has announced the US is redoubling efforts to put pressure on Iran.

Iran Summons Polish Charge d’affaires over Warsaw Conference

In a Sunday statement, the Ministry said it has summoned the Polish diplomat, Wojciech Unolt, to voice protest at a so-called conference on Middle East peace and security that the United States is going to co-organize with Poland in Warsaw on February 13 and 14.

During the meeting, the director of the Iranian foreign ministry’s First Department for Eastern Europe affairs expressed the strong protest of the Islamic Republic to the Polish diplomat over his country’s cooperation with the US in holding such a conference.

“This is a hostile US move against the Islamic Republic of Iran, and Poland is expected to refrain from keeping the US company in holding such a conference.”

For his part, Poland’s charge d’affaires offered explanations on the conference and underlined that the summit is not anti-Iran.

He said the official stance of Poland is different from those expressed recently by the US officials.

In turn, the Iranian official described the explanations as insufficient and underlined the need for compensatory actions on the Polish side.

The Iranian diplomat then added if the actions are not carried out, the Islamic Republic will have no way but to adopt retaliatory measures.

The polish charge d’affaires highlighted the historical ties between the two states, and said he would convey the message of the Islamic Republic to officials in Warsaw.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo earlier said that Washington will jointly host a global summit focused on Iran and the Middle East next month in Poland. Pompeo added the gathering would “focus on Middle East stability and peace, freedom and security here in this region, and that includes an important element of making sure that Iran is not a destabilizing influence”.

Since its unilateral withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal last year, the US has been increasing pressure on Tehran and vowed to increase it until Iran halts what US officials describe as its “malign activities” throughout the Mideast and elsewhere.

Number of Americans Visiting Iran on Rise

Vali Teymouri, the deputy head of Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHTO), said from mid-March to mid-November 2018, 1,656 American tourists visited Iran.

The figure, he said, shows a 27-percent growth compared with the similar period last year.

“A sum of 1,879 American tourists visited Iran from March 21 to November 21,” he said.

He described as significant the number of American tourists’ visiting Iran amid the current sanctions re-imposed by the US following its unilateral withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal and said despite the pressure imposed on the Islamic Republic over the past months, foreign visitors have become more interested in visiting Iran and getting closely familiar with the customs of the Iranian nation.

The official went on to say that based on negotiations made with the related officials, the process of issuing visa for American tourists will be facilitated further.

Elaborating on the role of devaluation of the Iranian national currency against the US dollar, Teymouri said the expenses and final costs are among the main issues shaping tourists’ decision about their destinations.

“It goes without saying that rial’s devaluation has had its impact on the arrival of foreign tourists in our country but we have adopted some appropriate measures to attract them which have been successful,” he said.

Teymouri then referred to the warm hospitality of Iranian nation as one of the main reasons for the growing number of foreign tourists visiting Iran and said through tourism, the Islamic Republic can introduce the true image of the Iranian nation to the world.

“Foreign tourists including those from America and Europe can share their experiences in Iran with others through social media and portray a good image of our culture,” he concluded.

Alvares Ski Resort; Largest of Its Kind in Iran

Alvares stands 3,200 meters above the sea level. It can attract skiers for about six to eight months of each year due to its cold temperature which prevents the snow from melting.

Alvares is the largest ski resort of the country capable of hosting ski players for longer times of each year compared with other resorts.

Iran FM to Visit Iraq Sunday

“Senior executives from dozens of state-run and private entrepreneurial companies will accompany the foreign minister in this trip,” Qassemi said Saturday.

During the important regional trip, Zarif will meet with high-ranking Iraqi officials and participate in joint trade conferences in several cities including Karbala and Sulaymaniyah, the spokesman said.

The top diplomat’s visit to the neighbouring country is of particular significance since it will be made shortly after the trip of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to Baghdad, which was aimed at convincing Iraqi officials to restrict their ties with Tehran.

Iran is Iraq’s largest trading partner, with annual trade between the two reaching up to $12 billion.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said late November Iran and Iraq could raise bilateral trade to $20 billion.

Historical Water Transfer System Unearthed in Central Iran

The system was dug out during archaeological excavations at the underground city of Nooshabad  located in Aran va Bidgol town in Isfahan province.

“The system which contains historical water structures was probably built during the two historical Ilkhanate and Safavid eras,” says Zahra Sarookhani, the head of the archaeological team.

She says archaeological excavations and relevant studies should be completed in order to establish whether the findings date back to the pre-Islamic era and whether the system was used for a special purpose.

The archeologist also said the fifth phase of archaeological excavations at Nooshabad is underway with the permission of the research centre of the Cultural Heritage Organization of Iran.

“As archaeological excavations continue in the near future, the water structures in Nooshabad city together with its museum site will turn into a water museum,” she said.

The archaeologist noted that the findings in Nooshabad suggest there used to be a special social system, which is of interest to experts on social studies as well as archaeologists.
