Iran FM Holds Phone Talks with Syrian Counterpart

During the talks, the two sides conferred on the latest developments in bilateral strategic relations between Tehran and Damascus as well as other issues of mutual interest.

The telephonic conversation came a couple of days after Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad visited Tehran in his first public visit to Iran since the start of Syria’s war in 2011.

He held meetings with Iran’s Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and President Hassan Rouhani.

During the meetings, the Syrian president appreciated Tehran’s support for Syria during the war on the Arab country.

Zarif’s phone call with his Syrian counterpart came as the Iranian top diplomat had resigned Monday over being excluded from Rouhani’s meeting with Assad, but his resignation was rejected by the President on Wednesday.

In a Wednesday statement, Qassemi offered condolences to the bereaved families of the victims, and sympathized with the Egyptian nation and those affected by the incident.

At least 25 people were killed and 50 injured after a train smashed into a barrier at Cairo’s main train station, state television and witnesses have said.

Photographs on social media showed clouds of black smoke billowing from the building in central Cairo.

Footage also showed fire engulfing the train and a nearby platform and people rushing to help the injured.

Egypt’s National Railway Authority said in a statement the fire broke out after a train derailed and collided with a concrete barrier at the station, without giving further details.

Security sources told Reuters news agency that there was no indication the crash was deliberate.

In a Wednesday statement, Qassemi said the Islamic Republic of Iran calls on the two leading and influential states of the sensitive region of South Asia to take into account the complicated situation of the region, which seems vulnerable over growing instability, insecurity and foreign interferences.

Iran calls on India and Pakistan to show self-restraint and make optimal use of all diplomatic mechanisms in order to resolve their disputes peacefully and take required measures to put an end to the tension created, he said.

The statement came after Pakistan’s military said it had shot down two Indian Air Force aircraft inside its airspace in Kashmir and captured two pilots.

The military added Pakistan had no choice, but to respond to India’s attack on its territory. However, the Pakistani military said it does not want to heighten the crisis. Indian officials say Pakistani fighter jets violated airspace over Indian-controlled Kashmir, but were forced back.

The developments came a day after India conducted airstrikes against alleged militant positions in Pakistan. The air raid was followed by Indian shelling in Kashmir, which left four Pakistani civilians dead.

Tehran, Yerevan Sign Two MoUs to Boost Ties

The Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between the National Iranian Standards Organisation and the Ministry of Economic Development and Investments of the Republic of Armenia and the document of cooperation between the High Council of Free Trade, Industrial and Special Economic Zones of Iran and the Ministry of Economic Development and Investments of the Republic of Armenia were the two documents signed by the officials of two countries.

Following the signing ceremony, the Iranian president said at a joint press conference that Iran and Armenia are determined to continue to work together in all areas regardless of opposition from any third country.

Rouhani said there are ample opportunities for economic cooperation that the two neighbours need to take up. The president added that he discussed various topics with Pashinyan, including natural gas and electricity exports to Armenia.

“The facilitation of cooperation in road transit, the boost of bilateral agricultural relations, as well as the development of animal husbandry in Armenia were emphasised by the two parties,” Rouhani went on to say.

He further noted that there are very good relations between the two countries on political, cultural, tourism, scientific and academic issues, and the Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes development of relations in these fields.

For his part, Pashinyan expressed his country’s willingness to boost ties with the Islamic Republic. He said Armenia is ready to facilitate Iran’s natural gas export to other countries through its soil.

Pashinyan is heading a high-ranking political and economic delegation to Tehran.

Since Armenia’s borders with both Turkey and Azerbaijan have long been closed due to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Iran is one of the only two channels for landlocked Armenia to the outside world.

Armenia imports Iranian natural gas and other fuel. The volume of gas supplies should rise sharply after the ongoing construction of a third power transmission line connecting the two countries is completed this year.

Trade between Iran and neighbouring Armenia hit $364 million in 2018 which is a record high since Armenia became independent in 1991.

Pakistan Downs Indian Fighter Jet, Captures Pilot

The Pakistani military’s spokesman, Major General Asif Ghafoor, said in a Twitter message that two Indian Air Force planes had been targeted in the airspace over the Islamabad-administered side of Kashmir.

One aircraft went down on the Pakistani side, while the other crashed on the Indian side of Kashmir, the official added.

“One Indian pilot arrested by troops on ground while two in the area,” he said in the tweet, without elaborating.

In response to PAF strikes this morning as released by MoFA, IAF crossed LOC. PAF shot down two Indian aircrafts inside Pakistani airspace. One of the aircraft fell inside AJ&K while other fell inside IOK. One Indian pilot arrested by troops on ground while two in the area.

Reuters cited an Indian official as saying that New Delhi’s jets also intercepted at least three Pakistan warplanes and forced them back after they crossed into Indian territory on Wednesday.

The Pakistani jets intruded over the Bimber Gali- Noushera sector at the Line of Control, said the unnamed official.

The reported airspace intrusion prompted India to close at least four airports in the northern part of the country.

Citing an Indian government official, Reuters said the airports are at Pathankot, Leh, Srinagar and Jammu.

The main airport in Srinagar had been shut down for three hours, according to police.

Overnight, the two sides traded heavy fire along their border in the Kashmir region. Islamabad pledged to surprise India with its retaliatory strikes after India pounded a purported militant training camp on Pakistan soil on Tuesday morning.

Pakistan began shelling the India-controlled side of Kashmir from across the border — known as the Line of Control (LoC) — on Tuesday evening, a spokesman for the Indian defense forces said on Wednesday.

“The Indian Army retaliated for effect and our focused fire resulted in severe destruction to five posts and a number of casualties,” said the spokesman.

He said that five Indian troops suffered minor wounds in the shelling that ended on Wednesday morning.

“So far there are no (civilian) casualties but there is panic among people,” said Rahul Yadav, the deputy commissioner of the Poonch district. “We have an evacuation plan in place and if need arises we will evacuate people to safer areas.”

On the other side of the border, Pakistan’s local officials said at least four people had been killed and seven others wounded in the exchange of fire.

They did not clarify if the casualties were civilian or military.

Indian police also said they had killed two militants in a gunbattle on Wednesday

‘India not seeking further escalation’

Earlier, India said that it sought no “further escalation of the situation,” arguing that it had only conducted “pre-emptive” airstrikes against what it called a militant camp on in the Pakistani town of Balakot near Kashmir.

Indian military sources said some 300 militants were killed in the operation, a claim rejected by Islamabad as outright “lying.”

New Delhi said the targeted camp belonged to the so-called Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militant group, which had claimed responsibility for an attack on an Indian security convoy in Pulwama, in Indian-administered Kashmir, on February 14. That attack killed more than 40 Indian troops.

Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj said on Wednesday that the government in New Delhi carried out the air raids “in the light of the continuing refusal of Pakistan to acknowledge and act against terror groups on its territory.”

“India does not wish to see further escalation of this situation,” she said. “India will continue to act with responsibility and restraint.”

The Indian diplomat also said that “based on credible information … Jaish-e-Mohammed was planning other attacks in… (India).”

“The limited objective of that pre-emptive strike was to act decisively against the terrorist infrastructure of Jaish-e-Mohammed in order to pre-empt another terror attack in India,” Swaraj added.

Swaraj also stressed that “no military installations were targeted” in the raids, and that the target was selected to avoid civilian casualties.

Soon after the bomb attack on Indian security convoy in Pulwama, New Delhi said it “was being controlled from across” the frontier by Pakistan’s main spy agency, and JeM commanders.

Prime Minster Narendra Modi also warned that those behind the bombing “have to pay a heavy price.”

 ‘No body killed, no damage’

Pakistan, which keeps denying the allegations of having a hand in the mid-February bomb attack, disputed India’s account and dismissed its claim of heavy militant casualties as “self-serving, reckless and fictitious.”

“There is not even a single brick in the debris,” said Pakistani military spokesperson Major General Asif Ghafoor on Wednesday.

“If there was any infrastructure there, then there would be some debris. They say [hundreds of] people were killed – I say that if there were even 10 people, there would be some bodies there,” he added.

He invited foreign diplomats and media to visit the scene of the air raids to verify his country’s account.

Some witnesses in the area also gave their own versions of the incident, saying, “The payload was dropped near the forest in Batrasi, it is totally uninhabited.”

This is believed to be the first time India’s Air Force has crossed into Pakistan since 1971.

Soon after the attack on Pakistan soil, Prime Minister Imran Khan convened a meeting of the National Security Committee, which vowed to “respond at the time and place of its choosing” in a statement.

The prime minister also called a special meeting of the National Command Authority – Pakistan’s top nuclear decision-making body – on Wednesday.

‘Pakistan knows how to defend motherland’

In the meantime, President Arif Alvi said that Pakistan had no aggressive intention against any nation, but it knew how to defend the motherland from any kind of misadventure.

Addressing an international conference on “Media and Conflict,” on Tuesday, he said, “We know how to defend ourselves,” without mentioning the Indian strikes.

He accused India of pursuing “an irrational approach” toward Islamabad, saying that whenever any terror incident occurred in India, New Delhi blamed Pakistan.

FM Zarif Back to Work, Welcomes Armenian PM in Tehran

FM Zarif Back to Work, Welcomes Armenian PM in Tehran

On Monday, FM Zarif announced his resignation in a post on his Instagram page which brought on reactions from Iranian and foreign figures.

In a letter to Zarif, Rouhani said on Wednesday that he saw his resignation to be against the country’s interests. Rouhani quoted Iran’s leader to describe Zarif as trustworthy and valorous and the one who is at the forefront of resistance against the all-out pressure campaign launched by the United States. The Iranian president said the joy of the Islamic Republic’s enemies for Zarif’s resignation is the best evidence of his success.

Iran President Officially Rejects FM Zarif’s Resignation

After receiving this letter, Zarif attended the welcoming ceremony.

He also wrote on his Instagram page that “as a modest servant, I have never had any concern but elevating the foreign policy and the status of the foreign ministry.”

Zarif thanked people, officials and intellectuals for offering generous support for him in recent days.

He said he has been serving the nation for a long time and he has “no concern but the promotion of foreign policy and the credit of the Foreign Ministry as the [body] responsible for advancing foreign policy and the forefront of defending national interests and rights of the noble Iranian people in the international arena.”

The Iranian foreign minister expressed hope the foreign ministry would be able to “fulfill all its responsibilities within the Constitution, the country’s law and overall policies strongly and decisively.”

Here is the text of FM Zarif’s post:

Hello friends,

I am very grateful to the generous kindness and distinctive support of the dear and brave people of Iran, the elites and respectable officials throughout my occupation, especially during the past 30 hours.

Throughout my life I have been eager to serve this nation and its great people.

As the person who is in charge of advancing the country’s foreign policy and the one who is at the forefront of defending the national interests and the rights of the noble people of Iran, I have had no concerns but the elevation of foreign policy and the status of the foreign ministry in the international arena.

I hope that with the cooperation of all, and the guidance and supervision of the Leader and the President of the Islamic Republic, the foreign ministry can carry out all its duties within the framework of the constitution, the laws of the country, and the general policies of the establishment.

Iran President Officially Rejects FM Zarif’s Resignation

The full text of the president’s letter in which he turned down Zarif’s offer to step down follows.

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

Dr Zarif, the respected foreign minister

Hello and greetings,

I saw your resignation letter dated February 25, 2019.

I understand and approve of your concerns about maintaining the dignity and credibility of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Minister as the highest-ranking official in implementing the country’s foreign policy.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs handles foreign relations and lays the groundwork for ensuring security and national interests. Therefore, as I have instructed [government institutions] time and again, all state institutions should act in full coordination with this ministry when it comes to foreign relations.

I appreciate your relentless efforts during the period of time you have shouldered the heavy responsibility of leading the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the eleventh and twelfth administrations. Since I consider you to be “trustworthy, valiant, brave and modest” as the Supreme Leader has put it, and to be at the forefront of resistance against the United States’ extensive pressure, I deem your resignation to be against national interests and will not accept it.

I am well aware of the pressure exerted on the country’s diplomacy apparatus, government and even the president elected by people. We will remain committed to the allegiance we have pledged to God and the nation to the end, and I am confident that we will pass through this tough stage by God’s grace.

Only in the past few months, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has achieved considerable successes in countering US plots in New York, Vienna, Brussels, the Hague, Warsaw, Munich, etc., as well as notable political victories at the regional and international levels.

The happiness and joy of the sworn enemies of these people, such the Zionist regime [of Israel], over your resignation is the best testimony to the success of “Mohammad Javad Zarif” and all the more reason for you to continue your work as Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

I, the establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran, especially the Supreme Leader, trust you.

Continue on your path with power, bravery and prudence as God is with the faithful.

Hassan Rouhani

President of the Islamic Republic of Iran

General Soleimani Throws His Weight behind FM Zarif

Zarif had announced his resignation Monday night, after he was not invited to a meeting between Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, where General Soleimani was present.

In a statement carried by Sepah News on Wednesday, General Soleimani said evidence shows Zarif’s absence from the meeting was not intentional, and was just caused by a lack of coordination in the government.

General Soleimani said Zarif has taken great steps to advance national interests as the main person responsible for Iran’s foreign policy.

The general said Zarif is definitely the one in charge of Iran’s foreign policy, and is highly respected by top Iranian officials, including Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

“He has taken valuable measures at various levels to advance the country’s national interests and has made necessary participation in the path to fight sworn enemies of the Islamic Revolution and the Iranian nation,” he said.

General Soleimani said Zarif’s resignation has pleased adversaries of the Iranian nation, but they must know that it won’t hinder the trend of the resistance front’s brilliant victories, and the country will continue to safeguard its national interests.

Zarif’s Resignation Not Accepted by Rouhani: Foreign Ministry

Iran Appoints Female Ambassador to Denmark

In a Tuesday statement, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said as the Iranian President’s chief of staff said earlier today, the resignation has not been accepted.

Qassemi then slammed “certain circles” for attempting to reap political and factional gains from Zarif’s announcement, and described it as a totally unacceptable move.

Since taking office, FM Zarif has been doing his utmost to promote the authority, prestige and esteem of the Iranian foreign policy, Qassemi added.

“Therefore, any move to downgrade the priceless idea of strengthening and protecting our foreign policy to some emotional and excited behaviours and personalizing our country’s national and macro policies is unfair and runs counter to the sacred ideals of the Islamic revolution and our religious ethics as well as our national interests and preferences,” he said.

The spokesman then rejected as baseless reports by certain media outlets on possible mass resignation of a number of foreign ministry directors and ambassadors.

“As Mr Zarif said, the Foreign Ministry and all its directors and ambassadors will continue their sensitive jobs strongly and seriously to press ahead Iran’s foreign policy and meet our national interests as well as security needs,” he noted.

With all in his power and relying on his deep knowledge and long experience in diplomacy and international affairs, Mr Zarif has relentlessly attempted to promote the status of Iran’s foreign policy in bilateral, regional and international relations, Qassemi said.

It goes without saying that the wise and informed nation of Iran is well aware of his effective efforts and pay tribute to him, the spokesman added.

On Monday, Zarif said he was stepping down in an announcement posted on his Instagram account. Zarif has served as President Hassan Rouhani’s foreign minister since August 2013.
